WASHINGTON - President-elect Donald Trump said in an interview that aired on Dec 8 that he would act on his first day in office to pardon rioters involved in the Jan 6, 2021, Capitol attack , further building expectations for a broad granting of clemency. “I’m going to be acting very quickly, first day,” Trump said on NBC News’ “Meet the Press with Kristen Welker” when asked when he planned to pardon his supporters who were charged in the attack aimed at overturning his 2020 election defeat. Hopes among Jan 6 defendants and their supporters for broad-based clemency have been growing over the past week after President Joe Biden pardoned his son Hunter , marking a reversal from his pledge not to interfere with his son’s criminal cases. Mr Biden said Hunter deserved a pardon because he was the victim of political persecution, an argument Trump will likely use to justify mass pardons. Some Mr Biden critics said his decision would lessen the political cost for Trump. Prof Kimberly Wehle, a professor at the University of Baltimore School of Law, said she was worried broad amnesty for Jan 6 defendants would serve to wrongly incentivize the fomenting of unrest or even violence on behalf of a president. “The idea that he’s going to reward people for violating the law on his behalf in connection with an attempt to overthrow legitimate election results... that’s not precedented,” said Prof Wehle, author of a recent book on presidential pardon power. ‘Nasty system’ In what has been billed as America’s largest-ever criminal investigation, at least 1,572 defendants have been charged in the Jan 6 attack, with crimes ranging from unlawfully entering restricted grounds to seditious conspiracy and violent assault. Mr John Pierce, a lawyer who has represented dozens of Jan 6 defendants, urged Trump to issue a blanket pardon for all who were charged with participating in the riot. “I just don’t know how you do it otherwise,” he said, noting that it would be difficult to parse which conduct out of the scores of cases that have already worked their way through the legal system would merit a pardon. “I think you would see a lot of unhappy people in the January 6 community” if pardons were granted on a case-by-case basis, he said. NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stock indexes drifted lower Tuesday in the runup to the highlight of the week for the market, the latest update on inflation that’s coming on Wednesday. The S&P 500 dipped 0.3%, a day after pulling back from its latest all-time high . They’re the first back-to-back losses for the index in nearly a month, as momentum slows following a big rally that has it on track for one of its best years of the millennium . The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 154 points, or 0.3%, and the Nasdaq composite slipped 0.3%. Tech titan Oracle dragged on the market and sank 6.7% after reporting growth for the latest quarter that fell just short of analysts’ expectations. It was one of the heaviest weights on the S&P 500, even though CEO Safra Catz said the company saw record demand related to artificial-intelligence technology for its cloud infrastructure business, which trains generative AI models. AI has been a big source of growth that’s helped many companies’ stock prices skyrocket. Oracle’s stock had already leaped more than 80% for the year coming into Tuesday, which raised the bar of expectations for its profit report. In the bond market, Treasury yields ticked higher ahead of Wednesday’s report on the inflation that U.S. consumers are feeling. Economists expect it to show similar increases as the month before. "There are all types of concussions in terms of mild, moderate and severe and at the moment, the guidelines are a one-size-fits-all approach," Professor Levi said. "This allows us to do precision medicine, personalising treatment to the player." The data would inform the severity and longevity of concussion events, he said, and with an immediacy that local players have not had access to before. The Wildfires operations manager, Rich Ley, said that more than the medical advancement for his players, the testing offered a sense of comfort and reassurance that the club was not just looking out for the players' health during their careers but well after. "The players have families and careers outside of here that they have to care for as well," he said. "We're doing the right thing here." Beau McKenzie, the Wildfires flanker, had suffered a few knocks in his career, and he said he felt unable to understand anything. Another player, as he waited for his turn in the testing room, remembered coming to with someone standing over him after his concussion last year. "A lot of the time, you're a bit out of it," he said. "Someone is standing over you, checking on you, and depending on what it is, you feel a bit dazed. It can be as bad as slurring your words." The benefit of the local tech, Lake Macquarie Private emergency department director Mark Lee said, was its immediacy. A nurse could fit the device and take the reading and, in less than 10 minutes, had a report that could inform them of the next steps of diagnosis. "That is why it's so exciting," he said. Matt Gaetz said on Friday that he will not be returning to Congress after withdrawing his name from consideration to be attorney general under President-elect Donald Trump amid growing allegations of sexual misconduct. “I'm still going to be in the fight, but it's going to be from a new perch. I do not intend to join the 119th Congress,” Gaetz told conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, adding that he has “some other goals in life that I'm eager to pursue with my wife and my family”. The announcement comes a day after Gaetz, a Florida Republican, stepped aside from the Cabinet nomination process amid growing fallout from federal and House Ethics investigations that cast doubt on his ability to be confirmed as the nation's chief federal law enforcement officer. The 42-year-old has vehemently denied the allegations against him. Gaetz's nomination as attorney general had stunned many career lawyers inside the Justice Department, but reflected Trump's desire to place a loyalist in a department he has marked for retribution following the criminal cases against him. Hours after Gaetz withdrew, Trump nominated Pam Bondi, the former Florida attorney general, who would come to the job with years of legal work under her belt and that other trait Trump prizes above all: loyalty. It's unclear what's next for Gaetz, who is no longer a member of the House. He surprised colleagues by resigning from Congress the same day that Trump nominated him for attorney general. Some speculated he could still be sworn into office for another two-year term on January 3, given that he had just won reelection earlier this month. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Thursday that the federal government will remove the goods and services tax on a slew of items for two months, starting Dec. 14. But in provinces where the provincial and federal sales taxes are blended together into a harmonized sales tax, Canadians will get a larger break. The federal government also plans to send $250 cheques to Canadians who were working in 2023 and earned up to $150,000. That means Canadians who were not working in 2023, including those who were receiving social assistance or were in retirement, will not be sent a cheque in April.
