https://arab.news/7mnwp DOHA: Qatar’s prime minister said Saturday that momentum had returned to talks aimed at cementing a truce and hostage exchange deal in Gaza following the election of Donald Trump as US president. “We have sensed, after the election, that the momentum is coming back,” Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani told the Doha Forum for political dialogue. The Qatari prime minister explained that while there were “some differences” in the approach to an agreement by the outgoing and incoming US administrations, “we didn’t see or recognize any disagreement on the goal itself to end the war.” The Gulf emirate, along with the United States and Egypt, had been involved in months of unsuccessful negotiations for a Gaza truce and hostage release after 14 months of war. But in November, Doha announced it had put its mediation on hold, saying it would resume when Hamas and Israel showed “willingness and seriousness.” Sheikh Mohammed said there had been “a lot of encouragement from the incoming administration in order to achieve a deal, even before the president comes to the office,” adding this had affected the Qatari decision to get talks “back on track” over the last two weeks. “We hope to get things done as soon as possible. We hope that the willingness of the parties to engage in a good faith continues,” he said. The prime minister also brushed off the prospect of Qatar facing greater pressure over the status of its political bureau for Hamas, which the Gulf state has hosted since 2012 with the blessing of the United States. He called the office a “platform to convene between the different parties,” adding that Qatar was not “expected to enforce solutions” on the Palestinian militants. On Syria, Qatar’s prime minister said Syrian President Bashar Assad failed to engage with his people and address issues like the return of refugees during a period of calm in the country’s war. “Assad didn’t seize these opportunities to start engaging and restoring his relationship with his people, and we didn’t see any serious movement, whether it’s on the return of the refugees or on reconciling with his own people,” Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani said at the Doha Forum for political dialogue. Qatar — which gave early support to the opposition after Assad’s government crushed a peaceful uprising in 2011, leading to the civil war — remains a fierce critic of the Syrian leader but is calling for a negotiated end to the fighting. Sheikh Mohammed said the world had been “surprised” by the speed of a recent rapid advance by Islamist-led militants in Syria and cautioned that the situation might become “more and more dangerous,” threatening a return to a more intense level of civil war. Arnolfo Teves Jr. back in the country soon to face murder charges after the Court of Appeals in Timor-Leste granted the Philippine government’s extradition request for the second time. While acknowledging that Teves could still appeal the latest decision of the Timor-Leste appeals court, Justice Assistant Secretary Jose Dominic Clavano IV on Friday said this could be the last chance for the dismissed lawmaker to resort to that legal remedy. READ: Timor-Leste grants extradition request vs Teves for 2nd time According to Clavano, the DOJ is confident that the decision will no longer change since this is the second time the Timor-Leste government granted the Philippines’ extradition request since June. “In a way, we have seen the sentiment of the [Timor-Leste] justices, right? This is already the second instance, and their decision remains the same. That’s why we don’t, we do not expect that Timor-Leste’s decision will change,” he said. “They respected our laws in the decision. They used our own laws, and they also used international law in coming up with this very sound decision. So we are happy and we welcome this decision. This is something that we have been looking forward to and we will not stop until [Teves] faces the charges here in the Philippines,” Clavano added. Teves has been named as the alleged mastermind behind the slaying of Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo in Pamplona town on March 4, 2023. Nine others were also killed with Degamo when a group of armed men barged into the family compound where the governor was meeting with constituents. Teves is facing 10 counts of murder, 12 counts of frustrated murder and four counts of attempted murder in the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 51. He, however, had denied all allegations. Following an Interpol red notice in February, Teves was arrested on March 21 in Dili, Timor-Leste, while playing golf. In a decision on Dec. 2, the Timorese Court of Appeals, through a majority vote of two, granted the Philippines’ extradition request, citing the criminal charges filed against Teves. “It is clear from the extradition request that the State of the Philippines is seeking extradition for criminal proceedings on the grounds that the extraditee (Teves) is the mastermind of several murders, some of which were committed and others thwarted and attempted, and not on the grounds that the extraditee supported this or that presidential candidate and is or is not a political enemy,” the decision read. “The extradition request is not made for political purposes, but only to bring justice to the numerous victims of the multiple crimes of murder, frustrated murder and attempted murder mentioned above,” it added. Teves had also told the court that he feared for his life should he be sent back to the Philippines. But the appeals court said there was not enough evidence to support such claims, especially after the Philippine government assured in its request that it would abide by international and domestic laws against torture. “The witness Topacio said that the extraditee did not return to the Philippines because he was informed that there was political persecution against him, but he was not credible on this point since the Court was convinced that the extraditee did not return in order not to answer the criminal charges at issue in the present extradition proceedings,” the court said, referring to Ferdinand Topacio, one of Teves’ lawyers. In June, the Court of Appeals in Timor-Leste granted the Philippine government’s request to extradite Teves. Teves’ camp, however, filed a motion for reconsideration the following month, but it was denied in August. In September, Teves’ return was further delayed as his extradition case underwent “new proceedings.” The DOJ, in an earlier statement, said that Teves’ legal team had challenged the court’s extradition decision, citing concerns over the number of judges involved. “This is a clear afterthought, raised only after the proceedings concluded unfavorably for him,” the DOJ said. Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson has reportedly been arrested by the FBI on federal public corruption charges. Shortly after the arrest, U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy issued a statement about Anderson's alleged charges. “When her constituents elected Ms. Fernandes Anderson, she had a fundamental obligation to act with the utmost integrity,” Levy stated. “Public officials who line their pockets with taxpayer money erode the trust and confidence of the public and the officials who serve them.” Fernandes Anderson, 45, was reportedly arrested early Friday morning around 6:30 a.m. outside her home in Dorchester, CW affiliate WHDH-TV reported. According to an 11-page indictment , she is facing five counts of wire fraud and one count of theft concerning programs receiving federal funds. I’m thinking about the work.” When she was hounded by reporters asking about what federal investigators are looking for, or if she did anything wrong, Fernandes Anderson remained tight-lipped. “I can not comment on the case itself,” she said. “I can not comment on it at all.” According to the outlet, Fernandes Anderson was elected to the position in 2021. She is the first African immigrant and Muslim-American elected to the council. After being arrested, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu called on Fernandes Anderson to resign. “Like any member of the community, Councilor Fernandes Anderson has the right to a fair legal process,” Wu said in a statement. “But the serious nature of these charges undermine the public trust and will prevent her from effectively serving the city. The message here is to remain vigilant and proactive. Be aware that AI has its benefits and dangers, and both sides change almost daily. The goal of improving efficiencies in various outlets is worthy. Far too many people continue to exploit those growing efficiencies to create havoc and confusion. So be mindful of how you use AI and stay as informed as possible moving forward.
