HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- An arrest has been made months after a woman was found dead in a courtyard of an apartment complex in southwest Houston. The Houston Police Department said 30-year-old Daniel Vargas Cartagena was charged with capital murder in connection to 37-year-old Maria Flores' death. Cartagena was arrested on Friday by the Texas Department of Public Safety in Karnes County, Texas. Investigators said the deadly shooting happened on Sept. 4 in the 9400 block of Concourse Drive. When police officers entered the complex, they found Flores' body after she was shot multiple times in a walkway. HPD had shared on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, surveillance video of Flores and Cartagena walking together before the shooting. This, too. “I drove the hell out of it on the back nine,” he said. This week’s Hero World Challenge holds a somewhat unique spot on the current pro golf calendar, besides the fact that it’s played at paradisiacal Albany Golf Course in the Bahamas. While the Tiger Woods -hosted event isn’t exactly silly — $1 million is handed out to the winner of the 20-man tournament — it also isn’t Masters -serious, either, and that offers the opportunity to tinker. Scottie Scheffler is playing with a new claw putting grip (to great success, too, if the first couple of days are any indication). Akshay Bhatia is playing with a new driver. And Thomas is playing with a longer driver, from 447⁄8 inches to 46, the maximum length allowed under the rules . Why not, he and his caddie, Matt Minister, thought. “I mean, I’ve messed with a longer driver this offseason and I put it in play today just because with not much wind, I felt like it was a good opportunity,” Thomas said. “I can use it at home, but putting something in and playing it in competition, I think, is just different. “Didn’t go very well on the front, but again, they weren’t necessarily terrible drives. I kind of said that to Rev [Minister’s nickname] walking up nine — they all felt like pretty good swings; I was just barely kind of starting left of my window and just going left versus I like the ball falling right. And just with it being a little bit longer, I just kind of have to get the club out in front of me and get on top of it a little bit more.” So it takes work. It’s not for everybody, not even the pros. But there are pros to playing it . Think physics. A longer club means a longer swing arc, leading to more room to accelerate ahead of contact — and potentially more distance. Thomas said he thinks he’s getting 2 or 3 more mph in ball speed, and 15 extra yards. It could stick then, though understandably not everywhere. It’ll be an equation. Tighter courses equal shorter driver; open courses mean longer driver. “I want to be able to have that because I think there’s some courses that it’s a huge advantage,” Thomas said. “This isn’t necessarily one. You know, some of those drives that I hit in the — I don’t know if you want to call it sandy area, desert area, whatever the heck it is — you know, those aren’t bad tee shots a lot of places. The Spring Place Ruritan Club is celebrating more than seven decades of work in our community. An organization in which the entire family can be involved, Ruritan is dedicated to improving communities and building a better America through fellowship, goodwill and community service. The Spring Place club was organized in 1950 and has been an important part of education and community improvement ever since. In fact, four generations of area residents have now been in Ruritan and attend its monthly meetings. With more than 50 members, Spring Place is the largest and oldest Ruritan club in the Georgia/Alabama District of Ruritan National which is headquartered in Dublin, Virginia. The Spring Place club was recently honored at the District Convention held in Armuchee. Contributions to the Ruritan National Foundation were recognized and the club received four National Service Awards, including a bronze in Environment and Public Service, silver in the area of Social Development and a gold award for club activities promoting citizenship and patriotism. Spring Place was also recognized for participating in the Birthday Club program of the Ruritan National Foundation. The Spring Place club’s only fundraiser is an annual spring golf tournament. Money raised from the tournament is then put back into the community as the club donates to at least 25 community projects and causes each year. Among them are Community Christmas, Rescue Squad, schools, the Salvation Army Food Bank, Saturday Snacks, Next Step, Teen Maze, Flags Across Murray, the Murray County Fire Department and the Spring Place Cemetery. Ruritans co-sponsor the annual Spring Place Community Festival each August; present scholarships in memory and in honor of longtime Ruritan members and local educators G.I. Maddox, Carl L. Davis and Tim Howard each year; and have litter pickups and work days at the community spring. Ruritan meetings are the first Thursday of each month except July, usually at the Old Spring Place Methodist Church. A covered dish supper begins at 7 p.m. with a short business session following. Leaders for 2025 are President Tina Garland and Vice President Joe McDaniel. Regular annual dues are $50 per year while student memberships are $15. A project which uses birdsong as a key to unlocking the secrets of wildlife has been launched in a collaboration between the UK Agri-Tech Centre and Chirrup.ai. Chirrup.ai launched the technology to help make nature monitoring an affordable solution for measuring and managing biodiversity. The project, ‘ChirrupNano’, with funding from Innovate UK, uses birdsong to monitor wildlife previously unseen in nature reserves and back garden bird counts. Hayley Gerry, project manager at the UK Agri-Tech Centre, said: “The expanse of knowledge we can gain about biodiversity in an area using the bioacoustics of bird song is extremely impressive. “To enable sustainable farming, we need to encourage multi-species habitats to enrich the areas, which in turn makes the farming of livestock and arable products sustainable. “In order to do this we need to be able to measure the baseline of the current situation, and that is where this project comes in.” The project will be put to the test in the spring of 2025 across the UK.
