The Red Sea festival is just one sign of the industry's risePublished 5:00 pm Friday, December 13, 2024 by Thomas Howard Residents and visitors walking downtown will notice stars bearing the names of famous Mississippians embedded in the sidewalk. The Queen City has long been known for its recognition of the arts, and the stars are one of several projects paying homage to those whose efforts put the Magnolia State on the map. A number of events this past week, however, suggest significantly more stars will be needed in the near future. Events put on by both Meridian and Lauderdale County school districts highlighted the immense talent developing among our next generation of leaders and celebrated the effort students put into honing their craft. Email newsletter signup On Monday, Meridian High School students performed “Blue Christmas,” with both choir and band students participating in the concert. On Tuesday, Northwest Middle School held its annual Christmas concert, while at The Mississippi Arts + Entertainment Experience, Lauderdale County School District held its Holiday Showcase highlighting musical, artistic, dance and stage acting talent from students at each of the district’s four campuses. Thursday, MPSD’s youth choir helped set a festive mood as they opened for Mississippi trio Chapel Hart, which brought its Hartfelt Family Christmas Tour at the Temple Theater. The arts are a vital part of Meridian’s community, but even if that were not the case, arts education would remain a critical part of students’ education. According to the University of Florida, arts education is linked to improved academic outcomes, better mental health, increased engagement, reduced disciplinary actions and more. While many students will likely go on to pursue careers other than art, the skills developed by the arts, such as critical thinking and social skills, are highly valued among employers across the board. Thank you to the teachers, administrators, parents, volunteers, sponsoring businesses and all others who had a hand in making this week’s events come to fruition. Let’s continue to celebrate our young artists and the positive impact they have and will have on Meridian. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was limited with the right shoulder injury that sidelined him last week and there is growing concern about the long-term status of left tackle Trent Williams. Wednesday's practice was not the start to the NFL workweek head coach Kyle Shanahan had hoped after Purdy was unable to bounce back from a shoulder injury in Week 11. Brandon Allen started at Green Bay and the 49ers (5-6) lost 38-10 with the backup-turned-starter committing three turnovers. Williams was reportedly spotted in the locker room with a knee scooter and is experiencing pain walking. He played through an ankle injury against the Seattle Seahawks Nov. 17. Defensive end Nick Bosa (hip, oblique) also missed practice Wednesday, leaving the 49ers to spend the holiday plotting to play the Buffalo Bills (9-2) without the three Pro Bowlers again. "I don't know anyone who gets Thanksgiving off unless maybe you have a Monday night game. You just start a lot earlier and get the players out," Shanahan said. "We cram everything in so the players get out, tries to be home with the family by 5. I usually get home by 7 and they're all mad at me, then get back to red-zone (installation)." The 49ers are in danger of a three-game losing streak for the first time since Oct. 2021. Injuries have been a common thread since September when running back Christian McCaffrey was a surprise scratch with an Achilles injury for the opener. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk (ACL) is out for the season at a position dinged from top to bottom. Star linebacker Fred Warner also is ailing and said Wednesday that he fractured a bone in his ankle on Sept. 29 against the New England Patriots. The game against the Bills will mark his eighth straight game playing with the injury. "It's something I deal with every game," Warner said. "I get on that table before every game and get it shot up every single game just to be able to roll. But it's not an excuse. It's just what it is. That's the NFL. You're not going to be healthy. You've got to go out there, you've got to find ways to execute, to play at a high level and to win every single week." Shanahan wasn't interested in injury talk. He said the 49ers have not played well in the past two weeks, and puts part of his focus on getting more out of the running game with snow in the forecast on Sunday night. He's not in agreement with pundits who doubt McCaffrey's ability early into his return from injured reserve, with a per-carry average of 3.5 yards compared to 5.4 in 2023. "The speculation on Christian is a little unfair to him," Shanahan said. "Christian is playing very well. He's playing his ass off. To think a guy who misses the entire offseason is going to come back and be the exact same the day he comes back would be unfair to any player in the world." San Francisco opened the 21-day practice window for linebacker Dre Greenlaw, who tore his Achilles in the Super Bowl in February. His return date is unclear. --Field Level Media

We've bought all sorts of things to make her feet feel better, like heated socks, foot baths, compression devices for her legs and feet ... nothing worked. So we were skeptical when we bought the Miko foot massager, even though it kept coming up as one of the top foot massagers in our research. We've been pleasantly surprised (shocked actually) at how much our mom LOVES it. It has an automatic setting for 15 minutes, and she just keeps pushing the start button for hours at a time! The combination of a little heat, the rollers and the compression all work together to give her feet a nice massage . She keeps things on the high setting so she's able to feel it. The fair opened Friday afternoon with dozens of vendors selling hundreds of gifts suitable for all ages such as home-baked goods, toys, clothing items, crafts and more. The event included food trucks and raffles for goodie baskets, fishing rods, vacations to Las Vegas and more. The fair also highlighted several local vendors that have struggled over the past year with their sales. Though local businesses weren't the only ones who benefitted, as the event doubled as a toy drive for the AFL-CIO's Adopt-a-Family program. "There's a lot of people that need help at this time of year," said Nichole Faucett, the event organizer. "The Adopt-a-Family program is our cause that's dear to our heart. So we want to collect toys, we want to help them but we also want to help all the small businesses that have really been struggling this year and help them, you know, survive a little bit better." Those looking to donate to the Adopt-a-Family program should consider items for older kids and teenagers, such as clothing, makeup, technology and books. "We'll take anything, but it needs to be a new toy," she said. "The older kids get overlooked a little bit. And stocking stuffers, they're always needing some stocking stuffer items." The Shopping 4 a Cause fair continues Saturday, Dec. 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Interserv, located at 5400 King Hill Ave.As TikTok bill steams forward, online influencers put on their lobbying hats to visit Washington WASHINGTON (AP) — Lawmakers, meet your latest lobbyists: online influencers from TikTok. Haleluya Hadero, The Associated Press Dec 23, 2024 2:52 PM Dec 23, 2024 3:20 PM Share by Email Share on Facebook Share on X Share on LinkedIn Print Share via Text Message WASHINGTON (AP) — Lawmakers, meet your latest lobbyists: online influencers from TikTok. The platform is once again bringing influencers to Washington, this time to lobby members of Congress to reject a fast-moving bill that would force TikTok's Beijing-based parent company to sell or be banned in the United States. On Tuesday, some influencers began a two-day advocacy event in support of TikTok, which arranged their trip ahead of a House floor vote on the legislation on Wednesday. But unlike a similar lobbying event the company put together last March when talks of a TikTok ban reached a fever pitch, this year’s effort appeared more rushed as the company scrambles to counter the legislation, which advanced rapidly on Capitol Hill. Summer Lucille, a TikTok content creator with 1.4 million followers who is visiting Washington this week, said if TikTok is banned, she “don’t know what it will do” to her business, a plus-sized boutique in Charlotte, North Carolina. “It will be devastating,” Lucille said in an interview arranged by the platform. The legislation is drawing unusual support in Congress In an unusual showing of bipartisanship, a House panel unanimously approved the measure last week. President Joe Biden has said he will sign the legislation if lawmakers pass it. But it’s unclear what will happen in the Senate, where several bills aimed at banning TikTok have stalled. The legislation faces other roadblocks. Former president and current presidential candidate Donald Trump, who holds sway over both House and Senate Republicans, has voiced opposition to the bill, saying it would empower Meta-owned Facebook, which he continues to lambast over his 2020 election loss. The bill also faces pushback from some progressive lawmakers in the House as well as civil liberties groups who argue it infringes on the First Amendment. TikTok could be banned if ByteDance, the parent company, doesn’t sell its stakes in the platform and other applications it owns within six months of the bill’s enactment. The fight over the platform takes place as U.S.-China relations have shifted to that of strategic rivalry, especially in areas such as advanced technologies and data security, seen as essential to each country’s economic prowess and national security. The shift, which started during the Trump years and has continued under Biden, has placed restrictions on export of advanced technologies and outflow of U.S. monies to China, as well as access to the U.S. market by certain Chinese businesses. The Biden administration also has cited human rights concerns in blacklisting a number of Chinese companies accused of assisting the state surveillance campaign against ethnic minorities. TikTok isn’t short on lobbyists. Its Beijing-based parent company ByteDance has a strong lobbying apparatus in Washington that includes dozens of lobbyists from well-known consulting and legal firms as well as influential insiders, such as former members of Congress and ex-aides to powerful lawmakers, according to the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew will also be in Washington this week and plans to meet with lawmakers, according to a company spokesperson who said Chew’s visit was previously scheduled. Influencers descend on Washington But influencers, who have big followings on social media and can share personal stories of how the platform boosted their businesses — or simply gave them a voice — are still perhaps one of the most powerful tools the company has in its arsenal. A TikTok spokesperson said dozens of influencers will attend the two-day event, including some who came last year. The spokesperson did not immediately respond to questions about how many new people would be attending this year’s lobbying blitz. The company is briefing them ahead of meetings with their representatives and media interviews. Lucille, who runs the boutique in North Carolina, says has seen a substantial surge in revenue because of her TikTok page. The 34-year-old began making TikTok content focusing on plus-sized fashion in March 2022, more than a decade after she started her business. She quickly amassed thousands of followers after posting a nine-second video about her boutique. Because of her popularity on the platform, her business has more online exposure and customers, some of whom have visited from as far as Europe. She says she also routinely hears from followers who are finding support through her content about fashion and confidence. JT Laybourne, an influencer who also came to Washington, said he joined TikTok in early 2019 after getting some negative comments on videos he posted on Instagram while singing in the car with his children. Laybourne, who lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, said he was attracted to the short-form video platform because it was easy to create videos that contained music. Like Lucille, he quickly gained traction on the app. He says he also received more support from TikTok users, who reacted positively to content he produced on love and positivity. Laybourne says the community he built on the platform rallied around his family when he had to undergo heart surgery in 2020. Following the surgery, he said he used the platform to help raise $1 million for the American Heart Association in less than two years. His family now run an apparel company that gets most of its traffic from TikTok. “I will fight tooth-and-nail for this app,” he said. But whether the opposition the company is mounting through lobbyists or influencers will be enough to derail the bill is yet to be seen. On Tuesday, House lawmakers received a briefing on national security concerns regarding TikTok from the FBI, Justice Department and intelligence officials. ____ AP Journalist Didi Tang contributed to this report. ___ This story was originally published on March 12, 2024. Moscow : Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday, December 28, apologised to Azerbaijan’s President for the passenger plane crash that happened in Russian airspace in Kazakstan on December 25. What Putin described as a “tragic incident,” occurred after Russian air defence was used against Ukrainian drones. Flight J2-8243 became a ball of fire near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan, killing 38 onboard. The crash occurred after the plane diverted from southern Russia where Ukrainian drones were reported to be attacking several cities. “Vladimir Putin apologised for the tragic incident that occurred in Russian airspace and once again expressed his deep and sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured,” the Kremlin said in a statement. “At that time, Grozny, Mozdok and Vladikavkaz were being attacked by Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles, and Russian air defence systems repelled these attacks,” the Kremlin said. The call to the Azerbaijan President took place at Putin’s request, said Kremlin. The Embraer 190 aircraft, operated by Azerbaijan Airlines took off from Baku for Grozny in Russia’s Chechnya but was ‘denied landing due to fog’ in Grozny. The plane was then diverted far off over the Caspian Sea and crashed in Aktau, Kazakhstan resulting in the deaths of 38 out of the 67 people on board with 29 surviving. Footage from the crash site showed damage to the plane’s nose and shrapnel from the missiles, an observation pointed out by military and aviation experts in foreign media reports such as the Wall Street Journal, Euronews and AFP. NoneAdemola Lookman and Marco Carnesecchi admit Atalanta see as a ‘positive’ result on which to end 2024 before preparing for the Supercoppa Italiana. It was a tough match for La Dea, who saw Carnesecchi make several big saves in the first half, most notably a double parry on Taty Castellanos before the woodwork saved him on Matteo Guendouzi. Fisayo Dele-Bashiru sprung the offside trap on a Nicolò Rovella ball over the top to give Lazio the lead, but Marco Brescianini tapped in the generous Lookman roll across at the 88 minute to equalise. “It was a tough match, the first half was very difficult for us, but we fought and on another day might’ve won the game. We drew today, but we didn’t lose, so it’s positive,” Not only did he win the Europa League with a hat-trick in the Final, but Lookman also won the African Player of the Year for 2024. “The club had a fantastic 2024, so we want to continue doing the same thing and the new year will be even better.” The first Atalanta fixture of 2025 will be the in Riyadh on January 2, hoping for a very different result to the 4-0 defeat they suffered when last facing the Nerazzurri in September. “It is another big game, the Supercoppa is important for us. Inter are a strong team, we know that we have to fight and show our quality,” concluded Lookman. This result ends the run of 11 consecutive Atalanta victories, but it does keep them unbeaten in 13 rounds since the 3-2 loss to Como on September 24. It also ensures they remain top of the Serie A table at the end of 2024, as even if Napoli win tomorrow against Venezia, it will only join them in first place with a worse head-to-head record. “We have to congratulate Lazio on a great performance,” said Carnesecchi on Sky Sport Italia. “We did well to stay in there and not give up to the end, because we know that we will always create chances to score. “We’re glad to still be top of the table, but there’s a lot of work to be done.” Although he was not the first choice for all of 2024, Carnesecchi has now become the main goalkeeper for Atalanta. “You can see the results on the field, I am more balanced now, I feel good physically and that helps me too. We’re pleased, this was a fundamental point and now we can prepare for the Supercoppa.”Ukraine Supports Stabilizing Syria, Zelenskiy Says As He Again Warns Of Russia-North Korea Cooperation
