SEOUL: South Korea’s opposition said Tuesday it would hold back a decision to impeach acting president Han Duck-soo until later in the week. The opposition Democratic Party earlier said it would introduce an impeachment motion against Han on Tuesday to protest against the interim leader’s refusal to sign into law special bills to investigate his impeached predecessor. “We have decided to exercise patience, taking into account the sentiments of the people, and wait until the 26th (Thursday) to determine whether our demands are met,” floor leader Park Chan-dae said. The party originally set Christmas Eve as the deadline for Han to promulgate two special bills investigating suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol’s short-lived imposition of martial law, as well as graft allegations surrounding his wife, Kim Keon Hee. The conservative leader was stripped of his duties by parliament on December 14 following his brief declaration of martial law 11 days earlier, which plunged the country into its worst political crisis in decades. Yoon is now waiting for a decision by the Constitutional Court, which requires six votes in favor from its nine-member bench in order for the impeachment motion to be passed. Currently three seats are empty, and can be appointed. But Han, who stepped in to replace Yoon, rejected the opposition’s demand at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, insisting on bipartisan agreements for the two bills. Han’s stance “left us no other option but to interpret it as his intention to continue the insurrection by delaying proceedings”, Park told a press briefing earlier. Yoon is currently under investigation by a joint team comprising police, the defense ministry, and anti-corruption investigators. On Tuesday, Yoon Jong-kun, the Democratic Party spokesperson told reporters that the impeachment motion against Han had been “unanimously adopted” as the party’s official stance. The reasons for impeachment include not only rejecting the two bills but also “actively participating in and supporting the insurrection” and “attempting to exercise another form of power while the President’s authority had not yet formally ended after the insurrection”. The opposition says it needs only a simple majority in the 300-member parliament to impeach Han, as this is the threshold for a cabinet member. The ruling People Power Party, however, argues that a two-thirds majority is required since Han is currently serving as acting president. Kweon Seong-dong, leader of the ruling People Power Party, said The Democratic Party’s “coercive politics have reached their peak” adding that they are “constantly interfering with the legitimate exercise of the acting president’s authority”. “This behavior is no different from that of gangsters who threaten retaliation if money is not deposited,” said Kweon. — AFPHail Flutie: BC celebrates 40th anniversary of Miracle in Miami

Facebook Twitter WhatsApp SMS Email Print Copy article link Save LSU (6-4, 3-3 SEC) is set to play Vanderbilt (6-4, 3-3) in its penultimate game of the regular season. The Tigers are in the midst of a three-game skid, losing to Texas A&M, Alabama and Florida. The Tigers are unranked in AP Top 25 after climbing as high as No. 8 in the country thanks to a six game win-streak. The biggest culprit to their woes as of late has been their offensive struggles. Since leading the Aggies 17-7 at halftime a month ago, LSU can barely put points on the scoreboard. It has scored just 35 points over the past 10 quarters and has three touchdowns in 27 drives, averaging 4.6 yards per play. For LSU to avoid a fourth consecutive loss, it’ll need to limit turnovers, produce in the redzone and have an effective running attack. Follow along here for live updates and analysis from LSU's home game against Vanderbilt, which kicks off Saturday at 6:45 p.m. in Baton Rouge.
The Vancouver Canucks will likely be represented on a variety of teams at this year’s World Juniors. The annual tournament is closely followed by many hockey fans and a great chance for tomorrow’s stars to introduce themselves on a huge stage. The Canucks have three prospects who will likely be playing for their country. Tom Willander is one of the best prospects in the Canucks organization and should play a huge role for Sweden this year. He’s already been named to the team and is expected to hold down a spot in the top four. The right-handed blueliner is enjoying a solid sophomore season at Boston University. He’s seen as a steady contributor who can play in all situations. With the Canucks having a need on the right side of their defence group, the hope is that Willander can make the NHL in the next few years and help fill that gap. Sawyer Mynio has risen up the Canucks organization’s depth chart this season. He at training camp and has gotten off to a strong start with the Seattle Thunderbirds in the AHL. Mynio has already been invited to Team Canada’s training camp but hasn’t made the final roster yet. Many projections have him making the final team including that and . While Mynio is over a point-per-game so far this season with the Thunderbirds, he’s seen as a stopper who is tough to play against. Those types of players are crucial for short tournaments like the World Juniors and thus it’s likely he gets a spot. Basile Sansonnens, 18, is the third Canucks prospect who will likely be playing for Switzerland. He’s currently in his first full season in North America and has picked up a few assists so far. At 6-foot-4, he has the size that NHL teams covet and he’s seen as a defensive defenceman. Switzerland has not yet released its World Juniors rosters, but most expect Sansonnens to make the team.Prince Andrew breaks silence after royal linked to Chinese 'spy' banned from entering UK
Wole Osinupebi It’s the season of emigration in Nigeria. Young people and the not-so-young believe economic migration will solve the challenges they face living here. And indeed, there are challenges. What is usually not factored into the plans is the fact that wherever one goes has its own issues. And this varies from place to place. Unemployment and underemployment are rife in Nigeria. Electricity, potable water supply, transportation and security are of poor quality or non-existent. Even when one has a job, the pay is low and prospects for growth opaque. Going abroad therefore seems a viable option because it appears people are paid very well and all the comforts of life are accessible and in abundant supply. The first thing to note are the environmental challenges, culture and weather. Many Nigerians are stumped by racism, where you’re hated and treated badly simply because of the colour of your skin. It’s something most of us in this part of the world have no experience with. Of course, there’s racism in Nigeria. Nigerians are treated badly by fair (and not so fair) skinned immigrants in Nigeria, but usually take it in their stride. The bad behaviour is attributed to mental challenges with the perpetrator. This is probably why Nigerians don’t react badly to racist behaviour. However, in Europe and America, racism is not necessarily overt, but it’s there. So, expect it. Language is another cultural issue. It’s amazing to discover that English spoken in English speaking countries like the USA, Canada and the UK is not the English we speak. It takes some time before you begin to ‘hear’ them. Then, they have idioms and turns of phrase which are related again to culture. After culture is weather. Most of us are surprised at how cold it can get in the Northern hemisphere. Note that it get’s really cold in South Africa and East Africa too. But never like Europe and America. It never goes below 22degC in West Africa except perhaps in elevated places like Mambilla or Obudu in Nigeria. After leaving Nigeria, some of our people have had to come back because they couldn’t handle the cold. Cost of living is usually a surprise because it’s at a scale far higher than here. Transportation by bus and train in the UK is very expensive compared to Nigeria. A three hour train ride could cost over a 100 pounds if you don’t book well in advance. You will pay over a 1000 pounds for a tiny flat of 1.5 rooms. Electricity costs are not cheap and taxes cannot be dodged. If income does not exceed expenditure by some margin, life becomes intolerable. And it’s difficult to get a decent income when one is an undocumented immigrant. And then there are legal issues. Children cannot be reprimanded in a hard way, neither is corporal punishment acceptable, it is considered to be abuse. And it could become a matter for the government welfare department. Wives could request that their husbands leave the home under an accusation of potential violent behaviour. The police will enforce this request when invited. There are good reasons for these stipulations, but they are also open to manipulation, and in the hands of an immoral people, weaponized and used as part of the ammunition in marital disputes. Here in Nigeria the balance of power in marriage tilts to the advantage of men, across the Atlantic, this is reversed. Without considering this shift men continue in the way of their ancestors in the Northern Hemisphere with painful outcomes. On food. It is interesting to see Nigerians and other Africans trying to replicate food they ate at home in their new places of abode. When travelling back after some time at their native homes, bags are filled with food and condiments. This is because food is cultural, and habits extremely difficult to change. Since most Nigerian meals are full of spices and peppers, adjusting to bland food is tortuous. After going without home food for a while, it seems like one has not eaten for a long while. In effect there’s a psychological sensation of starvation even though it’s not real, mounting further pressure on mental health and the feeling of well-being. There are however advantages. The major benefits of living in the West and the developed world in general are the functioning infrastructure such as electricity, potable water, roads and then schools, healthcare and an atmosphere of security. There’s also a feeling that even if one has a relatively rough time, the children would do better. So, because of the perceived advantages, many will sell all their possessions, even borrow money in order to move to Europe/America. Depending on the visa requirements of the targeted country, intending emigrants arrange themselves to fit. It’s either you gain admission for a course that will allow you bring spouse and children, or get qualifications for an on-demand profession. Unfortunately, the target nations keep adjusting their requirements as the initial gentle trickle of immigration became a massive influx. The authorities in the targeted countries restrict the admission of certain skin colours, usually brown and black. Not because they no longer need those skills but for political reasons. And also, the increased pressure on accommodation and services. Provision for schoolrooms, houses and healthcare are usually planned 10-20yrs in advance in developed countries, and is based on projected population growth. An influx of immigrants with their children over a short period adjusts existing projections and budgets upwards. This also impacts politics and elections. Then, getting a job doesn’t come easily. You will need to find out what works in your new environment. Just as the immigration process requires careful study and application, the employment requirements also. Same applies for those who prefer self-employment. It may be a good idea to understand the process of getting transcripts from your school before you leave Nigeria. Be prepared to do volunteer work in your new country if paying jobs don’t come quickly. This is so you have some track record of work in your new environment in your resume. Some people get recruitment consultants to guide them especially to rework their resume. This may cost money. Do note that getting a decent job without proper immigration documents is a mirage. And there are immigration document scams. Once abroad, you will discover that there are crooks everywhere, and not only in Nigeria. And without documents you’re as vulnerable as a new born baby. On top of this the police does not care for you since they see you as a criminal too. Overall, emigration is not new to mankind. Men have been moving from place to place for a very long time. But it’s useful to note that each country is different and requires adjustments. Some changes are obvious and adjustments easy. Some are more complex and adjustments will have to be learnt. But learn you must, or you’ll be miserable. And of course, home remains home if abroad is not working. ANDERSON TOWNSHIP, Ohio (AP) — Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow's home was broken into during Monday Night Football in the latest home invasion of a pro athlete in the U.S., authorities said Tuesday. No one was injured in the break-in, but the home was ransacked, according to a report provided by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office. Deputies weren't immediately able to determine what items were stolen. A person who is employed by Burrow arrived at the Anderson Township home Monday night to find a shattered bedroom window and the home in disarray. The person called their mother, and then 911 was contacted, according to the report. Deputies reached out to neighbors in an attempt to piece together surveillance footage. “Our investigators are exploring every avenue,” public information officer Kyla Woods said. The homes of Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were broken into in October. In the NBA , Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis had his home broken into Nov. 2 and Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley Jr.'s home was burglarized on Sept. 15 while he was at a Minnesota Vikings game. Portis had offered a $40,000 reward for information. Both the NFL and NBA issued security alerts to players after those break-ins, urging them to take additional precautions to secure their homes. In league memos previously obtained by The Associated Press, the NFL said homes of professional athletes across multiple sports have become “increasingly targeted for burglaries by organized and skilled groups.” And the NBA revealed that the FBI has connected some burglaries to “transnational South American Theft Groups” that are “reportedly well-organized, sophisticated rings that incorporate advanced techniques and technologies, including pre-surveillance, drones, and signal jamming devices.” Some of the burglary groups have conducted extensive surveillance on targets, including attempted home deliveries and posing as grounds maintenance or joggers in the neighborhood, according to officials. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nflKane hat trick against Augsburg hides Bayern's concerning lack of goalsLeo Igwe Recently, I facilitated a critical thinking workshop at the Bay Wreath Schools in Lagos. The theme was critical thinking and teacher development. As the theme stated, the workshop was on teaching, about teaching, and for teachers. It highlighted the pedagogical value of critical and reflective inquiry. The workshop exposed teachers to critical mental habits and skills. It emphasized how critical thinking would enhance expertise in the learning and delivery of subjects in classrooms. I used the opportunity to discuss questionstorm as a method of teaching and learning. Questionstorm is a way that I operationalized critical thinking for primary and elementary schools. Questionstorm is the ability to interrogate all objects and materials. It is a habit of questioning ideas and experiences in all areas of human endeavor. Simply put, questionstorm is a question-driven inquiry. Children are naturally curious. They thirst for knowledge and understanding. Unfortunately, the school system kills children’s curiosity and dampens their interrogative appetite. The school system places much emphasis on rote learning and memorization. It makes the generation of answers not questions or problems the test of knowledge, and the determinant of intelligence. Teaching is largely a drudgery, a monotonous exercise, and a process of depositing knowledge on passive recipients, the students. Teaching entails dumping information on learners whose duty is to cram and reproduce during tests or examinations. This teaching praxis has been criticized and blamed for the poor performance of students post-school (college and university) and their inability to think independently, creatively, and innovatively. Other teaching methods have tried to address these gaps and limitations. There have been suggestions to make teaching and instruction more active, and more student/learner/child-centered. One such method is the Montessori method. The Montessori method discourages grades and tests as ways of measuring achievement or determining intelligence and excellence. It emphasizes hands-on learning and the development of real-world skills. While the Montessori method stresses the practical approach to learning it says very little about the authoritarian teacher-to-student approach that is the mainstay of teaching and learning in classrooms. Teaching follows a pattern that leaves students and learners in the margins and unable to question and contribute to the learning process. Teachers present what is to be learned such as a text, and then generate questions that students respond or address to demonstrate knowledge of what has been taught. The student’s or learner’s main job is to answer questions, to look for or find answers or solutions. The teacher’s work is to get students to look for, and provide answers, and reproduce what they have been taught or told. But students are answer-depots. Students are not memory banks or reserves. They are active minds and thinking agents. With questionstorm as a teaching method, the mode of instruction would change. Teaching becomes a cooperative endeavor that actively involves teachers and students. What is taught in the classroom is a collaborative note, not the teacher’s note, not a handout to students. Teachers present or generate texts or objects for learning, in response to intense questioning of the object or material by students, teachers provide information as required for that subject, topic, level, and time frame. No two instances of teaching – of the same topic or subject- are or should be the same because the input of students and teachers is not predetermined. This is because of an overlooked principle in teaching and learning, that I call the “uncertainty principle”. The uncertainty principle underlies questionstorm because knowledge is not fixed. Learning is a fluid process. All that is to be learned is uncertain, it is unknown and never determined. No teacher can say beforehand what is to be taught or learned because no one knows exactly the questions and answers or replies that would arise when a topic is presented or taught in a particular class. A topic or learning material elicits unique responses and exchanges that both teachers and students cannot exactly know or predict a priori, before the fact. Teaching is a shared task and responsibility. Class notes are fluid materials. They are not texts cast on educational stones and delivered by teachers to students to copy, cut, and paste as is often the case. Class notes are not written or produced by teachers for students but by teachers with students. Teachers’ notes are incomplete and insufficient. They account only for a part, not a whole of the learning process and material. Students’ input completes and complements the teaching material and learning process. Thus every class note is unique because it is a product of a specific collaborative endeavor, a product of particular teaching and learning agents and circumstances that cannot be repeated or replicated. Thus, as a teaching method, questionstorm is set to facilitate teacher development and improve the quality of instruction in schools. Questionstorm will help realize a paradigm shift in education and learning. I hope educators, teachers, and school managers will embrace this method of teaching and learning. The Detroit Lions will play without two high draft picks in rookie cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. while possibly getting back veteran Emmanuel Moseley against the host Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Arnold was downgraded Saturday from questionable to out because of a groin injury. He was limited at practice on Thursday and participated in a full practice on Friday. The Lions drafted Arnold with the 24th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Alabama. Arnold, 21, has started all 10 games and has 38 tackles and six passes defended. Rakestraw (hamstring) was placed on injured reserve after not practicing all week. He already had been ruled out for Sunday's game. Detroit picked Rakestraw in the second round (61st overall) out of Missouri. He has played in eight games and has six tackles. Rakestraw, 22, has played on 46 defensive snaps (8 percent) and 95 special teams snaps (42 percent). Moseley had full practice sessions all week and was activated from injured reserve on Saturday but was listed as questionable for Sunday. The 28-year-old is in his second season with Detroit and appeared in one game last season before going on IR in October 2023. He was placed on IR on Aug. 27 with a designation to return. Moseley played from 2018-22 for the San Francisco 49ers and had 162 tackles, four interceptions -- one returned for a touchdown -- and 33 passes defensed in 46 games (33 starts). Detroit elevated linebacker David Long on Saturday for game day. Long, 28, signed with the practice squad on Tuesday after the Miami Dolphins released him on Nov. 13. He had started six of eight games for the Dolphins this season and had 38 tackles. In other Lions news, the NFL fined wide receiver Jameson Williams $19,697 for unsportsmanlike conduct for making an obscene gesture during a touchdown celebration in last Sunday's 52-6 home win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, the NFL Network reported Saturday. Williams, 23, scored on a 65-yard pass from Jared Goff with 12:55 remaining in the third quarter. --Field Level Media
