Former Governor of Edo State and senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has scored the State Governor, Monday Okpebholo high on his first one month in office, saying that he has set a new record in the history of governance in the State. Senator Oshiomhole gave this assessment on Thursday while speaking to newsmen at his residence in Iyamho, Estako West LGA of Edo State. Expressing satisfaction with Governor Okpebholo’s pragmatic approach to governance, Oshiomhole expressed joy that Edo people can now experience true and practical governance after eight years of Obaseki’s ‘rhetoric and MOUs.’ Oshiomhole said: “We have in the history of Edo, for the first time, a Governor who started making appointments from the first day in office. No day, no minute, no seconds is lost. He has also made a number of profound decisions within these few days in office. “Everyone in Edo is a witness to the fact that the Governor from day one kicked the ground running, appointing people into critical positions so that those sectors do not lack. For example, Justice, Health and SUBEB, because the issue of basic education is very dear to his heart and you can not suspend it for a few minutes.” The former Governor also expressed joy at the effort of Governor Okpebholo to address infrastructural development, stressing that Edo people are already feeling the impact of his administration, as contractors have been mobilized back to sites, addressing critical areas to bring relief to Edo people. Oshiomhole said: “In addition, he has mobilized contractors back to the site, carrying out an appropriate survey to ensure that his commitment to infrastructure starts immediately. “People already know that there is a new Sheriff in town. He is stopping all the bad guys and stopping the bleeding that Edo was going through. It is not a secret that LG Councils were paying huge amounts of money to his predecessor (Godwin Obaseki), and he said “stop”, not while I was here. We want the money to be used to develop the localities.” Oshiomhole continued: “There are a lot of profound decisions he has taken, and as I keep saying, ‘minimum words, maximum wisdom’. What people need after eight years of rhetoric and MOUs is action. Things they can see, things that they can feel. He is already doing eye-mark projects; what people can see. “I think he has done extremely well. Those working with him, he brings them close. He has collective decision-making processes, not because he can not do without them, but because he believes that two good heads are better than one. I am very proud of him and I think the people are happy. That is what I get from outside. “I am satisfied that we are in safe hands. I can proudly say to Edo people that Edo is now back in safe hands, and that is the hands of Senator Monday Okpebholo.” Governor Okpebholo, in his remarks, said, “Edo people will witness more good things in 2025.” The Governor said that with a new budget and credible people already appointed, critical sectors of the economy will receive needed boosts in 2025.

Samsung is making it easier to turn off one of the Galaxy S24 Series' best features. In a move that will come as a welcome relief to some Galaxy S24-series owners, Samsung has made it easier than ever to disable one of its best exclusive display features. As recently discovered by Android Authority , Starting with Samsung’s One UI 7 release , expected next year, users will be able to deactivate “Super HDR” feature system-wide by flipping a new switch in the Advanced Features settings. Setting the Super HDR function to “off” will prevent any apps from displaying Super HDR content, not just the Samsung Gallery app, as was previously the case. Why Disable Super HDR? Sometimes, users may want to turn off Super HDR because they don’t want their screens to become uncomfortably bright when viewing specific images. This can often happen when they encounter the occasional Super HDR photo while scrolling through a feed of standard images, as the display has to shift into a higher brightness mode to display the brightest parts of the image properly. It’s an intrinsic part of how HDR displays work and can’t be helped by simply adjusting the brightness control. Super HDR is a relatively new feature that allows still photos to deliver the same improved brightness and contrast you’d typically expect from HDR video content. When Super HDR is enabled, pictures can use the full brightness capabilities of the smartphone’s display, dramatically improving image quality by increasing contrast between the brightest and darkest parts of the image. However, displaying Super HDR images can often make the whole display suddenly much brighter than expected, which some users find pretty jarring , especially when viewing content in a darkened room. Samsung already lets users turn off Super HDR in the Gallery app, but that control hasn’t been extended to other apps, such as Instagram or Google Photos until now. A Samsung community moderator explains the company's plans to implement an on/off switch for the ... [+] Super HDR function in Instagram (Translation from from Korean: Google). Samsung’s Android 15 Leak—Bad News For Nearly All Galaxy Owners Dark Web Facial ID Farm Warning—Hackers Build Identity Fraud Database In Whiplash Maneuver, Court Rules Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) Reporting Requirements Are On Hold A Good Reason Not To Disable Super HDR While no one deserves to be blinded by an uncomfortably bright screen, I urge Samsung owners to look at some HDR content before giving up on the feature entirely because Super HDR can make a massive difference in quality when used correctly. Instagram users, in particular, should look at the work of Greg Benz , who provides many comparisons of the same photo with HDR turned on and off. Turning HDR off with a one-time set-it-and-forget-it option means sacrificing much of the stunning picture quality your smartphone can deliver. For this reason, I hope Samsung finds a way to improve the Super HDR experience for everyone rather than simply making it easier to turn it off. Samsung One UI 7 is now in beta on the Galaxy S24 series, and users can install it through the Samsung Members app. The stable release is due to launch with the Galaxy S25 series early in 2025. Man Throws Liquid at Arvind Kejriwal During Padyatra in DelhiManmohan Singh's father may have believed his bookworm son would one day lead India, but the understated technocrat with the trademark blue turban, who died Thursday at the age of 92, never dreamed it would actually happen. Singh was pitchforked into leading the world's largest democracy in 2004 by the shock decision of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi to turn down the role after leading the party to an upset win over the ruling Hindu nationalists. He oversaw an economic boom in Asia's fourth-largest economy in his first term, although slowing growth in later years marred his second stint. Known as "Mr Clean", Singh nonetheless saw his image tarnished during his decade-long tenure when a series of corruption cases became public. As finance minister in the early 1990s, he was hailed at home and abroad for initiating big-bang reforms that opened India's inward-looking economy to the world. Known as a loyalist to the Gandhi political dynasty, Singh studied economics to find a way to eradicate poverty in the vast nation and never held elected office before becoming PM. But he deftly managed the rough and tumble of Indian politics -- even though many said Sonia Gandhi, the Italian-born widow of the assassinated Rajiv Gandhi, was the power behind the throne. Born in 1932 in the mud-house village of Gah in what is now Pakistan, Singh moved to the holy Sikh city of Amritsar as a teenager around the time the subcontinent was split at the end of British rule into mainly Hindu India and Muslim Pakistan. His father was a dry-fruit seller in Amritsar, and he had nine brothers and sisters. He was so determined to get an education he would study at night under streetlights because it was too noisy at home, his brother Surjit Singh told AFP in 2004. "Our father always used to say Manmohan will be the prime minister of India since he stuck out among the 10 children," said Singh. "He always had his nose in a book." Singh won scholarships to attend both Cambridge, where he obtained a first in economics, and Oxford, where he completed his PhD. He worked in a string of senior civil posts, served as a central bank governor and also held various jobs with global agencies such as the United Nations. Singh was tapped in 1991 by then Congress prime minister P.V. Narasimha Rao to reel India back from the worst financial crisis in its modern history -- currency reserves had sunk so low the country was on the brink of defaulting on foreign loans. Singh unleashed sweeping change that broke sharply with India's Soviet-style state-directed economy. In his first term he steered the economy through a period of nine-percent growth, lending the country the international clout it had long sought. He also sealed a landmark nuclear deal with the US that he said would help India meet its growing energy needs. But by 2008 there was growing disquiet among the ruling alliance's left-leaning parties about the pact, while high inflation -- notably food and fuel prices -- hit India's poor hard. Still, voters remained drawn to his calm, pragmatic persona, and in 2009 Congress steered its alliance to a second term. Singh vowed to step up financial reforms to drive economic growth, but he came under increasing fire from critics who said he had done nothing to stop a string of corruption scandals on his watch. Several months before the 2014 elections, Singh said he would retire after the polls, with Sonia Gandhi's son Rahul earmarked to take his place if Congress won. But Congress crashed to its worst-ever result at that time as the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Narendra Modi, won a landslide. More recently, an unflattering book by a former aide titled "The Accidental Prime Minister" portrayed him as timid and controlled by Sonia Gandhi. Singh -- who said historians would be kinder to him than contemporary detractors -- became a vocal critic of Modi's economic policies, and more recently warned about the risks that rising communal tensions posed to India's democracy.Washington Capitals (16-6-1, in the Metropolitan Division) vs. New Jersey Devils (16-8-2, in the Metropolitan Division) Newark, New Jersey; Saturday, 7 p.m. EST BETMGM SPORTSBOOK LINE: Devils -168, Capitals +142; over/under is 6 BOTTOM LINE: The New Jersey Devils host the Washington Capitals after the Capitals knocked off the New York Islanders 5-4 in overtime. OGDC boosts Pasakhi-5 well productionBy Kemberley Washington, CPA, Bankrate.com (TNS) As the end of the year approaches, now’s the time to start preparing for filing your 2024 tax return in 2025. When it comes to tax strategies, generally Dec. 31 is the deadline to make changes that might lower your tax bill. One major exception is the deadline for contributing to a Roth or traditional IRA : You have until April 15, 2025, to make a contribution to a Roth or traditional IRA for tax year 2024. If you qualify for deductible IRA contributions , then a contribution to your traditional IRA can reduce your taxable income for 2024. Here are tips and strategies to prepare now for the 2025 tax-filing deadline. If you had significant changes in your life in 2024 — maybe you got married or divorced, started your own business, or had to claim unemployment benefits — your taxes may be more complicated. As a result, you might need to hire a certified public accountant (CPA), enrolled agent (EA) or other tax professional to prepare and file your taxes. If you decide to hire someone, it’s best to start planning for that sooner rather than later. Waiting until the calendar flips to April could cost you. The average fee for a professional to prepare and file a simple Form 1040 tax return, with no itemized deductions, is about $220, according to a survey by the National Society of Accountants in 2020-2021, the most recent data available. But that amount rises quickly for more complex returns, and varies depending on where you live. For example, a Form 1040 with itemized deductions costs an average of $432 in states on the Pacific Coast, compared with $285 in New England. No matter where you live, prices usually rise as the tax deadline approaches, so it’s smart to start searching for a tax pro soon. If you’re uncomfortable doing your taxes on your own and can’t afford a CPA, enrolled agent or other tax pro, or to pay for tax software , there are free options to consider. The IRS currently offers three ways to prepare your taxes for free: •With the IRS Free File program, the IRS partners with for-profit tax-software companies that offer free tax-prep software to eligible taxpayers so they can file their federal tax returns for free. Some taxpayers may also qualify for a free state tax filing, depending on the software provider. In January, the IRS will announce the income limit to qualify for the program for the 2025 tax season (for filing 2024 tax returns). For the 2024 tax season (2023 tax returns), taxpayers’ adjusted gross income (AGI) couldn’t exceed $79,000. •The IRS also offers its Direct File program, a free tool that allows you to file your federal income tax return directly with the IRS at no cost. The program supports simple tax returns and is available only in certain states. Check to see if you qualify here. •Another free-filing option is the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. IRS-certified volunteers offer free basic tax preparation in person to people who earn less than $67,000 a year, are disabled or whose English is limited. The IRS has an online location tool for hundreds of free tax preparation sites in the U.S. (the locator tool is updated from February through April). Some VITA sites also offer online tax-prep assistance. Now is a good time to create an IRS online account. If you want to see your Form 1040 from last year, or you’re missing a prior year Form W-2 or mortgage interest statement, you can find your documents using this free tax tool. Another benefit of creating an IRS online account is that it allows you to quickly obtain your prior year’s tax information without sitting on the phone for hours with an IRS representative, says Carl Johnson, a certified public accountant in New Orleans. An IRS online account also lets you view your account balance and payment history for each year. You can also create a payment plan to settle your federal income tax debt within minutes. If you’re 73 years old and have enjoyed watching your 401(k) or IRA grow tax-free without touching it, remember that the IRS is going to want its share each year. That means you’ll have to make withdrawals — and pay income tax. If you turned 73 in 2024, plan to take your required minimum distribution (RMD) at the latest by April 1, 2025. Read this IRS bulletin for more information. The amount of your RMDs is based on your age and the year-end values of your retirement accounts. A Roth IRA has two big tax advantages over a traditional IRA : Qualified withdrawals are not considered income for federal (and usually state) tax purposes, and you don’t have to take distributions from a Roth every year once you reach age 73. Converting a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA may save you money in the long run. Just know that when you convert an IRA to a Roth, it’s considered taxable income, which will raise your tax bill for that year. Generally, it’s best to convert to a Roth IRA when you’re in a low-income year. As tax season approaches, many people start receiving phone calls, emails and texts from entities claiming to be the IRS. Be wary, and understand that these are scams. Typically, the IRS will mail you a notice before using any other method of communication to notify you concerning issues with your tax return. The IRS won’t reach out via social media or text messaging. Relatedly, the IRS warns taxpayers to be careful when choosing a tax preparer. Taking time to vet your tax preparer is crucial to protect yourself from tax scams and fraud. Before hiring a tax professional, search that person’s name in the IRS database of federal tax return preparers to avoid dishonest “professionals.” “Taxpayers should check the tax professional’s credentials,” Johnson says. Tax pros without credentials “may take questionable positions without any degree of scrutiny or fear of losing their access to the profession,” Johnson says. Taxpayers who don’t file a tax return and owe a tax bill, or who file but don’t pay their tax bill on time, risk severe penalties. The IRS can even seize assets if necessary. Respond quickly if the IRS has been sending you letters because it found an error on your return or claims you owe back taxes. Typically, the IRS will send you a notice if you have a balance due, changes were made to your tax return, or the agency needs additional information. “If you ignore a collection letter from the IRS, you may face wage garnishments, liens, bank levies, and other adverse action. And in some cases, the amount due may increase for failure to respond,” Johnson says. Keep in mind the IRS does offer installment plans and other payment plans. Make copies of your correspondence and use only the U.S. Postal Service, the postmark from which is your proof of timeliness when responding. But whatever you do, don’t ignore the IRS because this may cause more issues in the future. ©2024 Bankrate.com. After absorbing their worst defeat of the year , the San Jose Sharks will be looking for a response Saturday against the Florida Panthers. The Sharks reverted to some bad habits during their 8-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday, as they strayed from their identity and were generally outworked from start to finish. The seven-goal loss was the Sharks’ most lopsided of the season, unceremoniously ending a three-game winning streak. While the Sharks have been playing better hockey l ately, the loss in Tampa offered a blunt reminder that they can still get embarrassed when their details and competitive level are not where they need to be, particularly against playoff-caliber teams. “Break out pucks, defend hard, box out, you name it,” Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky told reporters when asked about the defense’s shortcomings. “What a defenseman’s responsibilities are, we could have done a lot better.” The forward group wasn’t let off the hook, either. “Didn’t pay a price,” Warsofsky said. “You watch (the Lightning), they’re blocking shots. (Mikey) Eyssimont), (Luke) Glendining (when it’s) 8-1. And that’s the price to pay to win games in this league and that’s what we’ve got to learn.” The Sharks have done a fairly good job this season of responding after blowout defeats. After an 8-3 road loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Oct. 18, they returned home and played a much more competitive game two days later against the Colorado Avalanche in a 4-1 loss. Two days after getting blown out 7-3 by the Vegas Golden Knights on Oct. 26, the Sharks erased a three-goal deficit in the final five minutes of the third period against the Utah Hockey Club and won 5-4 in overtime. Now the Sharks face the reigning Stanley Cup champion Panthers, who, before Friday, were the third-highest scoring team in the NHL at 3.78 goals per game. Florida entered Friday tied for first place in the Atlantic Division with the Toronto Maple Leafs. “I’m not deflated. It’s an 82-game season,” Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro said after Thursday’s loss. “We’ve got another game in a couple of days and another opportunity to play a really good hockey team and surprise them. So it’s not deflating, but it’s definitely not something that’s acceptable, so we’ve got to be better.” The Sharks have lost 10 straight games to the Panthers, with their last victory in South Florida coming on Dec.1, 2017. The Sharks might have to face the Panthers without rookie forward Will Smith, who did not practice Friday. Warsofsky told San Jose Hockey Now that Smith is day-to-day with an upper-body injury, although it remained unclear when the 19-year-old was injured. Against the Lightning, Smith played late into the third period and finished with 15:50 in ice time. Smith has 11 points in 23 games this season and has recently been playing on a line with Mikael Granlund and Klim Kostin. Regardless of who plays against the Panthers, the Sharks still need to prove that they can consistently produce a strong performance against quality opponents. “We’ll obviously take a look at everything and talk within the group and figure it out,” Sharks winger Luke Kunin said, “so it doesn’t happen again.” GOODROW RETURNS: Forward Barclay Goodrow, who has been on injured reserve since Nov. 28 with an upper-body ailment, skated Friday, per San Jose Hockey Now. Goodrow was injured by a high hit from Ridly Greig in the Sharks’ Nov. 27 game against the Ottawa Senators. He is questionable to play against the Panthers. TEDDY BEAR TOSS: The San Jose Barracuda are hosting its annual Teddy Bear Toss at Tech CU Arena on Saturday when it plays the Coachella Valley Firebirds at 6 p.m. Fans are urged to bring stuffed animals to the game and throw them on the ice after the Barracuda scores its first goal. The Barracuda will then distribute some of the stuffed animals to children at local Kaiser Permanente hospitals, as well as other kids who might not get a gift during this time of year. The AHL franchise is also joining forces with San Jose-based Working Partnerships USA, which, per the team, helps to tackle “the root causes of inequality and poverty by leading collaborative campaigns for quality jobs, healthy communities, equitable growth, and a vibrant democracy.” For Saturday’s game, the Barracuda will also wear specialty jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game, with part of the proceeds going to Working Partnerships. The team is also giving away Barracuda stockings to the first 1,500 fans in the building.
Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid has been ruled out for Friday's game against the Brooklyn Nets and Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Clippers, per ESPN's Shams Charania . Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports initially reported Embiid would miss Friday's game for left knee injury management. According to Charania, the 76ers revealed the veteran is dealing with swelling in his knee. The 2022-23 MVP missed the first six games of the season due to maintenance on his surgically repaired left knee. He was out for another three games due to a suspension for shoving a reporter in the locker room. Before the season tipped off, Embiid and the Sixers signaled that the team would be even more proactive in handling his workload in an effort to keep him healthy for the playoffs. The plan made sense in theory because Philadelphia needs the seven-time All-Star at his best in the postseason to have a realistic path to a championship. However, his absence early on pointed to one risk with the strategy. By the time Embiid made his debut on Nov. 12, the Sixers had dropped seven of their first nine games. It became eight out of 10 when Embiid wasn't enough to help Philly avoid a 111-99 defeat to the New York Knicks. The fact he's not playing back-to-backs then left the team short-handed in a 114-106 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers the following night. Signing Paul George was supposed to give the 76ers a bit of a buffer when Embiid is out of the lineup. However, George also missed the start of the year and is on a similar plan in terms of load management. How Philadelphia fares in the playoffs will be the ultimate barometer for how this year is judged. Maybe everything is clicking for the Sixers once April rolls around. For now, a lot of the excitement coming out of the summer has probably dissipated in the City of Brotherly Love.Breakthrough sunscreen protects and cools your skin simultaneously: All you want to knowAfter absorbing their worst defeat of the year , the San Jose Sharks will be looking for a response Saturday against the Florida Panthers.

Dr. Manmohan Singh , a renowned economist, technocrat, and India’s 14th Prime Minister, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. Known for his role in shaping India’s economic trajectory, Singh’s legacy is deeply etched in the history of modern India. In 1991, then-Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao appointed him Finance Minister. Together, they steered the country out of a balance-of-payments crisis and initiated liberalization policies that transformed India’s economy. Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, a village in present-day Pakistan’s Punjab province, Singh rose from humble beginnings. After completing his initial education in Pakistan, he earned a First-Class Honours degree in Economics from the University of Cambridge and a D.Phil. from Nuffield College, Oxford. Singh’s academic brilliance laid the foundation for an illustrious career as an economist. Before entering politics, Singh held several key positions, including Economic Advisor to the Government of India, Chief Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Finance, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, and Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. He also served as Secretary General of the South-South Commission and Chairman of the University Grants Commission, earning a reputation for integrity and competence. In 2004, when the Congress party was poised to form the government, Sonia Gandhi surprised many by nominating Singh as Prime Minister. He became India’s first Sikh Prime Minister, sworn in by then-President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Singh went on to lead the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for two terms, from 2004 to 2014. His first term was also marked by his unwavering commitment to the Indo-US civil nuclear deal , despite strong opposition from Left parties within his coalition. Singh stood firm, even at the risk of his government collapsing, ultimately securing a historic agreement that ended India’s nuclear isolation. However, Singh’s second term was overshadowed by allegations of corruption, including the 2G spectrum, Commonwealth Games, and coal block allocation scams. These scandals, coupled with a perceived policy paralysis, tarnished his government’s image. The rise of the anti-corruption movement led by Anna Hazare further dented the Congress party’s standing. Despite these challenges, Singh’s contributions as an economist and leader remain unparalleled. His tenure saw robust GDP growth averaging 8.5%, and his personal commitment to maintaining peaceful ties with Pakistan helped stabilize bilateral relations. Singh’s political career included serving as a Rajya Sabha member since 1991 and as Leader of the Opposition during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government from 1998 to 2004. Dr. Manmohan Singh’s journey—from a village in undivided India to the highest office of the world’s largest democracy—is a testament to his intellect, dedication, and vision.
