Chuck Woolery, the legendary host of the dating show “Love Connection,” has died at 83. The veteran television personality, who was the original host of “Wheel of Fortune,” died at his home in Texas Saturday after experiencing trouble breathing, TMZ reported . His friend, Mark Young, also confirmed the news, writing on X, “It is with a broken heart that I tell you that my dear brother @chuckwoolery has just passed away. Life will not be the same without him, RIP brother.” In 1983, Woolery kicked off his 11-year stint as the host of the famed dating show, “Love Connection,” where he became known for telling viewers before the commercial break, “We’ll be back in two minutes and two seconds.” Other notable television gigs included hosting the shows “Lingo,” “Greed” and “The Chuck Woolery Show.” Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes will have to pony up $14,069 after the NFL fined him for unsportsmanlike conduct. According to NBC Sports, the fine stems from a “violent” gesture Mahomes made last Sunday during a touchdown celebration in a game against the Buffalo Bills. The Bills would go on to win the game, ending the Chiefs’ winning streak. A video posted to X by sports reporter Tom Pelissero shows the moment in question. In the clip, Mahomes can be seen making finger guns with both hands and pointing towards the crowd. Mahomes has yet to comment on the fine. Unfortunately for the three-time Super Bowl champion, this isn’t his first fine for conduct on the field. He was previously fined $50,000 for yelling at a game official in 2023 during another game against the Bills. “I had outbursts on the sideline and everybody saw it on a big game, and so there’s going to be consequences to that,” ESPN reports Mahomes said at the time. Just days after Liam Payne’s funeral, Zayn Malik paid tribute to the late One Direction member at his concert in Leeds. X user @nandiscaya captured the tribute and posted the emotional video to X. In it, a large screen displays Payne’s name along with his birth and death year and a message that reads, “Love you bro.” Fans can be heard screaming as the song “Stardust” begins to play. Malik and his band clear the stage as the tune from his latest album is played and sung aloud by emotional concertgoers. Fans can be heard sobbing and breaking down in the audience. The 31-year-old musician first responded to Payne’s death in an Instagram post last month with a throwback photo of the two sleeping. The remaining four One Direction members paid their respects to Payne on Wednesday at his funeral service in Amersham. His burial came more than a month after he fatally fell from a hotel balcony in Argentina. In a statement posted to Truth Social, Trump writes that Rollins previously served on his 2016 Economic Advisory Council and was the director of the Domestic Policy Council during his first term. Rollins, an attorney, got a degree in agricultural development from Texas A&M University and currently runs the America First Policy Institute, a nonprofit aiming to implement Trump’s policies. Also, in his post, Trump says, “Brooke will spearhead the effort to protect American farmers, who are truly the backbone of our country.” In her new role, Rollins will be tasked with running the USDA, a department with 100,000 employees that farmers depend on. In an Instagram post, Rollins thanked Trump for her appointment. “It will be the honor of my life to fight for America’s farmers and our Nation’s agricultural communities,” she wrote. Salviv’s new oil spray unlocks the power of magnesium sourced from the Dead Sea—one of the saltiest seas in the world—to soothe pain. This magnesium is renowned worldwide for its potency and purity. Magnesium is a vital nutrient (and natural muscle relaxant) that many people often aren’t getting in their daily diets. A lack of magnesium can cause issues like cramps, stiffness, spasms, pain, and inflammation. While Salviv’s oil spray doesn’t add more magnesium to your diet, it harnesses its benefits for targeted relief. Using the spray couldn’t be easier: spray the oil wherever you’re feeling discomfort or tension and massage the magnesium solution gently into the skin and let it absorb. In addition to its muscle and joint relief, Salviv recommends this oil spray to improve sleep quality. A few sprays before bed can calm your nervous system, allowing you to enjoy deep, restorative sleep. Its compact size and ease of use makes the oil spray an excellent go-to solution for on-the-spot relief. If you buy something from this post, we may earn a small commission. President-elect Donald Trump ’s attorney general nominee was once accused of stealing a Louisiana family’s dog named Tank. In 2005, Tank’s then owners, Steve and Dorreen Couture, put the Saint Bernard in a Louisiana animal shelter to weather Hurricane Katrina . The pooch, however, made his way to Florida amid the storm’s chaos and was ultimately adopted by Bondi, the Tampa Bay Times reported . Tank was one of thousands of dogs separated from their owners during Katrina. In 2006, Tank’s original owners tracked him down in the the Tampa Bay area, but Bondi reportedly did not want to return the adopted animal. A 16-month legal battle ensued during which the Florida prosecutor claimed Tank had been “ severely neglected ‚” riddled with heartworms, and abused while in the care of the Coutures. The family denied Bondi’s allegations, suing Bondi and demanding she return Tank. The two sides settled privately, with the dog returning to the Coutures’ custody. Despite the Coutures alleging Bondi “stole” their dog, she claimed throughout her successful campaign for Florida attorney general in 2010 that she had received a “tremendous amount of support from people and animal rights activists” over the legal battle. Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic has a new coach who knows his game better than just about anyone else—his longtime rival Andy Murray. The Serbian announced that he was teaming up with his fellow one-time world No. 1 in a Saturday post on X, which featured a brief compilation of the pair’s countless on-court duels set to dramatic music. “We played each other since we were boys, 25 years of being rivals, of pushing each other beyond our limits,” Djokovic said in a voice-over for the video. “We had some of the most epic battles in our sport. They called us game-changers, risk-takers, history-makers. I thought our story may be over. Turns out it has one final chapter. It’s time for one of my toughest opponents to step into my corner.” Murray hung up his racket in August after playing at pro level for 19 years, winning two Olympic championships and three Grand Slams. “He never liked retirement anyway,” Djokovic wrote in the post’s caption in a reference to Murray’s own retirement post . In an X post , Khalid shared a rainbow emoji and wrote, “There y’all go. next topic please.” The message came after an aspiring singer named Hugo D. Almonte shared a photo of them together and claimed they broke up over a “lie that I broke into his house.” When social media users began to question Almonte’s relationship claims, Khalid came out and confirm that he is gay. However, he made no mention of Almonte or the allegations mentioned in his post. “I am! And that’s okay,” wrote Khalid, who is best-known for collaborations with singer Normani, Benny Blanco and Halsey. In another message, Khalid wrote, “I got outted and the world still continues to turn. Let’s get this straight (lmao) I am not ashamed of my sexuality! In reality it ain’t nobodies business! But I am okay with me 🖤 love yall.” As commentators came to Khalid’s defense and slammed Almonte’s efforts to out him, he added, “aight love y’all thank y’all I’m off this 🤞🏾.” Elon Musk’s former pal, philosopher Sam Harris, claimed the billionaire is in the throes of social media addiction, “snorting ketamine and tweeting at all hours of the day and night,” he added in the Friday episode of his The Bulwark podcast. Harris called Musk’s X behavior “palpably, visibly deranged” and said he signal boosts “lunatics.” Harris explained, “We’re seeing the total derangement of a personality based on social media addiction.” Harris also slammed Musk’s so-called “service to humanity by boosting to 200 million followers obvious lies and conspiracy theories.” In response to Harris, Musk replied to a clip from Harris’ show and said he “is just actually not that smart.” Last week, Musk also called Harris “an utter idiot” and “subtarded” in response to another clip. “I heard the other day I was trending on X because Elon had attacked me,” Harris said. “I’ve been off for two years and the guy still attacks me by name on the platform.” Musk slammed Harris again when he said on Nov. 4 that he would “vote for virtually any other human being over” President-elect Donald Trump. “Sam Harris is, ironically, irrationality personified,” Musk wrote . The Caviar Co . offers a wide range of roe and caviar species, breeds, and styles (e.g., some with more “pop” and others that are more of a dip or spread) at various price points. Roes start at just $10 an ounce, and caviar at $40 an ounce. Whether you’re new to caviar and looking for a solid, entry-level-friendly tasting kit or a seasoned caviar connoisseur, you really can’t go wrong with The Caviar Co .—especially when everything is almost half off. Democratic Denver Mayor Mike Johnston vowed to combat President-elect Donald Trump ’s proposed mass deportations and defunding of sanctuary cities. The former Colorado state senator said he would use local law enforcement and 50,000 city residents “stationed at the county line” to create a “Tiananmen Square moment,” on Thursday , referring to the infamous image of a Chinese student staring down a government tank during the 1989 uprising in China. “You’d have every one of those Highland moms who came out for the migrants. And you do not want to mess with them,” Johnston told the Denverite news site. Trump’s incoming “border czar” Tom Homan said he will crack down on immigration regardless of local resistance. Still, not only would city police not assist federal immigration enforcement, Johnston claimed that his state’s leadership is also unlikely to allow federal forces to mobilize in Colorado. Roughly 40,000 migrants have flocked to the Mile High City since December 2022. Johnston said he and the city are committed to protecting Denver’s undocumented residents, and protecting its status as a sanctuary city. “We’re not going to sell out those values to anyone,” he said. “We’re not going to be bullied into changing them.” Longtime Melania Trump aide Hayley Harrison has been promoted to be her chief of staff, the former first lady’s office announced on X on Friday. “Mrs. Harrison has maintained an integral role and exceptional leadership on the First Lady’s team over the past seven years,” read the statement. “She has a strong understanding of White House operations, and as Chief of Staff, Mrs. Harrison will oversee and manage the East Wing’s team while strategically liaising with other parts of government.” Harrison was named in President-elect Donald Trump ’s indictment for mishandling of classified documents case, reported ABC News in 2023. Named as Trump Aide 1 in the case, Harrison texted another Trump aide about moving the classified documents out of the business center at Mar-a-Lago to make more room for staff to work. “There is still a little room in the shower where his other stuff is,” Harrison allegedly wrote to another staffer. Special Counsel Jack Smith, who is prosecuting Trump on the classified documents case, is expected to wind down the investigation before Trump takes office. Melania’s former chief of staff, Stephanie Grisham, spoke at the Democratic National Convention in July and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president. This report is from today's CNBC Daily Open, our international markets newsletter. Rates to come down "gradually" U.S. Federal Reserve officials anticipate lowering interest rates "gradually" to "a more neutral stance," minutes of the Fed's November meeting showed. That's contingent on inflation continuing to "move down sustainably to 2 percent and the economy remaining near maximum employment" in line with Fed officials' expectations. Markets move past tariff threats Markets in the U.S. moved past President-elect Donald Trump's threat of more tariffs to scale new highs on Tuesday . The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at record highs. Europe's Stoxx 600 fell 0.57%, weighed down by auto stocks, which dropped 1.7% on news of the tariffs. Daimler Truck slumped 6%. Tariffs put the brakes on automakers Shares of General Motors and Stellantis slumped following Trump's announcement on Tuesday of a 25% tariff on goods imported from Canada and Mexico into the U.S. Goldman Sachs estimates those tariffs, in addition to the 10% on goods from China also proposed by Trump, will raise a measure of core inflation by nearly 1%. Ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah A permanent ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah is scheduled to begin Wednesday, announced U.S. President Joe Biden. The deal, which was brokered by France and the U.S., aims to complete the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon over the next 60 days. Israel and Hezbollah have been engaged in a protracted conflict . [PRO] Data might show annual inflation ticking up The personal consumption expenditures price index is the Fed's preferred measure of inflation. The index for October will be released on Wednesday – and economists are expecting the headline number to tick up on an annual basis. Even before Trump enters the White House, investors are already living in his world. That portends the influence Trump, as president, will have on the economy and markets. Upon Trump's election win, the so-called "Trump trade" has flourished , with risk assets in general on an upward trajectory. The market rally stalled for a while as investors digested the possible increase in inflation and drop in economic growth due to Trump's policies, but was jolted back to life after Trump picked Scott Bessent as his Treasury secretary. Most recently, Trump announced he would raise tariffs by an additional 10% on Chinese goods entering the U.S., and new tariffs of 25% on those from Mexico and Canada. Those three countries alone account for 43% of U.S. goods imports, wrote Goldman Sachs's chief economist Jan Hatzius. "The truth is that the drag from tariffs on growth is likely to outweigh tax cuts on the forecast horizon," said Gregory Daco, chief economist at EY-Parthenon. Automakers felt that sting most keenly because virtually all with a presence in the U.S. manufacture vehicles and parts in Mexico — 26% of auto imports into the U.S. are from Mexico, reported UBS. Shares of automakers GM , Stellantis and Ford Motor fell on reports of Trump's planned tariffs. That said, while individual stocks staggered, the broader market advanced. The S&P 500 rose 0.57% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.28%, with both indexes hitting fresh closing highs. The Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.63%. "Markets have become a lot more comfortable with the prospects of these tariffs being more bluster and more negotiating tactics than actual implementation," Jamie Cox, managing partner at Harris Financial, said. Posturing or not, it's likely Trump's proposed policies will sway the markets in the foreseeable future. — CNBC's Sarah Min, Alex Harring and Samantha Subin contributed to this report. If you’re a Hallmarkie, you know that Andrew Walker is one of the faces of the channel. And what a face it is. It’s like The CW used an AI lab to create a leading man made of the best parts of Glen Powell , Ryan Eggold , and a young Clint Eastwood . It’s insulting really, how he just walks around with that thing out in the open, making the rest of us normies look like something out of Middle Earth. Thankfully, Walker is one of the authentically good ones. Humble, engaging, totally Canadian, and a dang workhorse. The Montreal-born actor-producer has shot six movies for Hallmark this year, including Countdown to Christmas’s Jingle Bell Run and Three Wiser Men and a Boy ! On top of that, he’s also a husband, father of two sons, and an entrepreneur, having co-founded the SkinMason skincare line ... which is clearly working, since there are zero signs of fatigue on his matinee-idol mug. “Obviously I use skincare on a daily basis, and when I wrap from set, I’m always washing my face off,” he explains of the inspiration behind SkinMason. “I have used very abrasive products that have given me skin [issues], I’ve broken out, I’ve had rashes. I used to have these little alcohol wipes to take the rest of my makeup off.” During a dinner with his friend Dr. Hussein Kanji, a heart and lung surgeon who’s “always working with different types of products for [organ] detoxification and antioxidants,” the two agreed to partner on a product line. “He had an idea for a very simple yet effective skincare brand, ideally targeted to men to start with, because the women’s space is so massive...but women and men can use the same skincare,” Walker continues. “And I said I’d love to venture into this, first off, because my wife [Cassandra] always scolded me for using way too much of her expensive skincare products—I don’t know what to use! It’s like, there’s so many products out there.” Two years later, Walker and Kanji had the first two core products of the line, exfoliating wipes and a serum, which were soon followed by their new moisturizer. “We don’t even call it a moisturizer. It’s a bioactive cream.” Noting that Jean Carruthers, the co-innovator of Botox, has endorsed all of their products, Walker explains that their formula boasts retinoid, Vitamins C, and phospholipids that rebuild collagen. The SkinMason site is having a 40 percent off Black Friday sale and you can order each item individually or as a set, with a VIP subscription for regular refill orders at a 10 percent discount. Better yet, he laughs, “My wife has now turned on to using my products!” Speaking of his wife, how do the Walkers plan to spend the holidays? “With family,” he immediately offers. “We moved up to Vancouver for a year and it’s been amazing. It’s been quiet because we live next to a forest. So the holidays this year are just going to be family and trying to take a moment to put away the phones, put away technology, and just focus my time on my kids and my wife and each other.” Now that is a good look for everyone. The prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, has cancelled the PhD programme of former assistant commissioner of police, Mohd Mohsin Khan, for allegedly raping a 26-year-old IIT-K research scholar. The action against the 2013 PPS officer came on the basis of a recommendation from DGP headquarters. Director of IIT Kanpur Manindra Agarwal told PTI that the institution received a letter from the police department stating that the NOC (No Objection Certificate) issued for Khan to pursue the PhD programme had been cancelled. "Soon after getting the letter, the institute also terminated the PhD programme of Mohd Mohsin Khan, the then ACP Kanpur. The written communication has been made regarding termination," Agarwal said. With inputs from PTIKANSAS CITY, Mo. — Taylor Swift once raved about the sweet potato casserole served at a New York City restaurant and now that recipe pops up every now and again at Thanksgiving. The holidays encourage many of us to try new recipes. Social media right now is flooded with recipes for appetizers, side dishes and desserts. Anyone making from TikTok? While we might not get to share a Thanksgiving feast with Swift — is your name Blake Lively? — or other celebrities beloved by Kansas City, we can eat like them. So here’s the recipe for that casserole Swift loved so much, and favorite family side dish recipes from Donna Kelce and Eric Stonestreet. Enjoy. Travis Kelce's mother, Donna Kelce, seen here last year at her son's music festival, dined on a cheesesteak made by actor Bradley Cooper at QVC festivities in Las Vegas this week. (Emily Curiel/Kansas City Star/TNS) If we tried to guess Travis Kelce and his brother, Jason Kelce, have scarfed over the years, would it be in the hundreds? Thousands? Their mom has spoken often about the batches of holiday crescent rolls she has baked over the years. Based on the recipe that won the 1969 Pillsbury Bake-Off, , they’re now known as Mama Kelce’s Dinner Rolls. They blend the crescent roll pastry with marshmallows, cinnamon and sugar. We bet they didn’t last long enough in front of Travis and Jason for that debate. •1/4 cup granulated sugar •2 tablespoons Pillsbury Best all-purpose flour •1 teaspoon ground cinnamon •2 (8-ounce) cans refrigerated Pillsbury Original Crescent Rolls (8 Count) •16 large marshmallows •1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted •1/2 cup powdered sugar •1/2 teaspoon vanilla •2-3 teaspoons milk •1/4 cup chopped nuts Preheat oven to 375°F. Spray 16 medium muffin cups with nonstick baking spray. In a small bowl, mix the granulated sugar, flour and cinnamon. Separate the dough into 16 triangles. For each roll, dip 1 marshmallow into melted butter; roll in the sugar mixture. Place marshmallow on the shortest side of a triangle. Roll up, starting at shortest side and rolling to opposite point. Completely cover the marshmallow with the dough; firmly pinch edges to seal. Dip 1 end in remaining butter; place butter side down in muffin cup. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. When done, remove from the oven and let the puffs cool in the pan for 1 minute. Remove rolls from muffin cups; place on cooling racks set over waxed paper. In a small bowl, mix the powdered sugar, vanilla and enough milk for desired drizzling consistency. Drizzle glaze over warm rolls. Sprinkle with nuts. Serve warm. This recipe serves eight. •1 pound Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved •1 pound butternut squash, peeled and cut into bite-size cubes •1 tablespoon olive oil •1/2 teaspoon garlic powder •1/2 teaspoon thyme leaves •1/2 teaspoon salt •1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper •5 slices bacon, chopped •1 shallot, finely chopped •1/2 cup dried cranberries •1/4 cup balsamic vinegar •1 teaspoon whole grain mustard •1/2 cup chopped pecans, toasted (optional) •1/3 cup crumbled blue cheese, (optional) 1. Preheat oven to 475°F. Spray large shallow baking pan with no stick cooking spray; set aside. Place Brussels sprouts and squash in large bowl. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with garlic powder, thyme, salt and pepper; toss to coat evenly. Spread in single layer on prepared pan. 2. Roast 16 to 18 minutes or until tender and lightly browned, stirring halfway through cooking. 3. Meanwhile, cook bacon in medium skillet on medium heat about 6 minutes or until crispy. Remove using slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain. Add shallot to same skillet; cook and stir 2 minutes until softened and lightly browned. Stir in cranberries, vinegar and mustard until well blended. Transfer mixture to small bowl; set aside. 4. Arrange roasted Brussels sprouts and squash on serving platter. (Tammy Ljungblad/Kansas City Star/TNS) Swift gushed about the sweet potato casserole served at Del Frisco’s Grille in New York City, a dish crowned with a crunchy candied pecan and oatmeal crumble. “I’ve never enjoyed anything with the word casserole in it ever before, but it’s basically sweet potatoes with this brown sugary crust,” she told InStyle. The media rushed to find the recipe, which Parade has . “Similar to T. Swift herself, we think this recipe is a mastermind, especially if you’ve been asked to bring the sweet potato side dish to this year’s Thanksgiving feast. It seriously begs the question: who needs pumpkin pie?” the magazine writes. •4 lbs sweet potatoes •1⁄3 cup oats •12 oz unsalted butter, divided •1⁄2 cup packed brown sugar •1⁄2 cup toasted pecans •1⁄2 cup granulated sugar •1 tsp kosher salt •2 tsp vanilla extract •4 large eggs, beaten Preheat oven to 375°F. 1. NoneFiring tranquiliser darts on the female tiger that is on the prowl in West Bengal’s Jangalmahal region has failed to capture Zeenat . On Saturday, the tigress was located in Bankura district, the third district of southern Bengal since it strayed to West Bengal after running away from Similipal National Park in neighbouring Odisha on December 10. The three-year-old stray wild cat has been changing her location every few days and has kept the West Bengal Forest department on the edge ever since she entered the State from Jharkhand on December 19. Multiple attempts to catch Zeenat have failed as she has reportedly killed over three domestic goats and their carcasses were found in the nearby jungles. She was first spotted in Jhargram district, and then travelled to Bandwan area of Purulia district on Thursday. She moved to Purulia’s Dangardi forests in Manbazar for only a day. She was in Purulia’s Bandwan for over five days. Now, she is in the Ranibandh area of Bankura according to Forest department officials from Saturday. Speaking to The Hindu , Debal Roy, Chief Wildlife Warden, said: “We made an attempt to tranquilise her at 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 28, but that failed. Our teams are in constant watch. We are trying our best and setting up cages in multiple locations. We are using both active and passive methods to get a hold of her.” Mr. Roy also mentioned that there have been no reports of any locals being injured or attacked by the tigress to date even as the big cat remains on the move across three districts of southern Bengal. Officials have set up fencing across multiple locations to avoid any conflict. The Forest department has also found multiple paw prints of Zeenat in Purulia and Bankura’s forests. According to Forest officials, they now have three teams on constant watch in Bankura’s Ranibandh area, where the tigress was last sited. They are using radio trackers to track her movements at the moment. They are employing modern technology, such as drones with thermal imaging, night vision devices, monitoring teams, and even using goats as bait to manage the situation and either capture the tigress or guide her back along the path she entered. But she has managed to escape all the traps till now, causing panic among locals as these are small patches of forests that have human settlements in multiple pockets of the district. Forest department officials are continuously urging locals in the area to avoid venturing into the forests and to remain indoors to ensure safety. Zeenat was relocated to Similipal from Maharashtra’s Tadoba to bolster Odisha’s tiger population. Subscribe now for unlimited access . Login or signup to continue reading Amel Mouhtadi, who goes by the moniker 'Angel Amy' according to her YouTube account, read out an apology letter when she was sentenced over the September 30 blaze at Wollongong Local Court earlier this month. "I'm deeply sorry for my actions, I think about this all the time," Mouhtadi, 43, said through tears. "I went from being a victim to a perpetrator of domestic violence. I'm being sorry not because I want a lighter sentence ... I'm sorry because there is no room for domestic violence in our society. "I don't know how things got so messed up." Mouhtadi went on to reveal she had been assaulted and bashed with tins of tuna while in jail. "I've been hot-watered, I've been bashed in the cells," she said. "You might think women are easier but they get you five to one and once you're down they stomp on you ... They bash you in the head with tuna tins." Tendered court documents state Mouhtadi had not lived at the Illawarra unit she bought with her wife since July due to an apprehended violence order banning the boxer from going near or contacting her. However Mouhtadi breached the order after making threats in a phone call about 11pm on September 30 that prompted her wife to flee the home. "I'm going to come back to the house and f---ing burn it down," Mouhtadi said. CCTV captured Mouhtadi at the unit wearing hi-vis about 1am the next morning, with the offender sending a video to her wife showing her letting a small dachshund out of a dog crate. Mouhtadi sent another video of herself traipsing through the bedrooms while saying: "I've poured petrol on the bed, I've poured petrol everywhere ... I'm going to hand myself in afterwards." Footage showed her using a jerry can to tip fuel onto the furniture and the landing of a stairwell, before she ignited it. Mouhtadi fled the unit, which was closely connected to three others, and could be heard for several minutes yelling: "There's a fire, get out now!" The offender continued texting her wife, referring to her as a "f---ing dog" and threatening "I'm coming for your head". She sent a final text at 1.48am stating: "It's burnt now." Emergency crews responded to the blaze as black smoke emitted from the property. The fire was extinguished with $135,000 in damage sustained to all upstairs rooms. Mouhtadi was arrested after she handed herself in to Lake Illawarra police station. She told police she had been diagnosed with autism and borderline personality disorder, before making full admissions to her offending. "I, Amel Mouhtadi, burnt that f---ing house down," she said. Magistrate Claire Girotto labelled Mouhtadi's reaction to being abandoned as "extreme" and ordered her to seek treatment for her diagnoses. Mouhtadi said "I don't care if you slap with me with 20 years jail" but the magistrate told the offender her jurisdictional limit in the local court was two years, which is what she sentenced her to. Amid a fresh wave of violence, Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum has sent her security chief and thousands of troops to stem a bloody escalation of drug cartel crime in Sinaloa state, signaling a shift in security strategy in the Latin American nation. On the campaign trail, Sheinbaum had promised to largely continue the security policy of her mentor and predecessor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, which prioritized addressing the root social causes of crime rather than attacking the cartels - an approach nicknamed "hugs not bullets" after a catchphrase of the former president. But initial signs from her first months in office suggest a more aggressive approach with the most substantial deployment in at least six years of military and naval troops, as well as special forces and heavy weaponry to Sinaloa since an intra-cartel war broke out in September. High-profile arrests and large drug seizures have followed, including a record bust of over a ton of fentanyl. That more front-footed strategy could align well with President-elect Donald Trump, who has called on Mexico to do more to stop the flow of drugs, and migrants, to the U.S. But it also risks further inflaming violence and homicides, as a more confrontational position has done in the past in a country where cartels are heavily armed with military-grade weapons. Sheinbaum's office did not reply to a request for comment. "There is a change without a doubt ... we are seeing signs that the strategy of hugs and not bullets is on the way out," said Vicente Sanchez, a security expert and member of Mexico's National System of Investigators, a government agency that works to improve the quality of Mexican research. Security experts said they believe the new strategy is partly a response to Trump's threat to impose 25 percent tariffs on products from Mexico if the country does not curb drug trafficking and the illegal crossing of migrants into the United States. Some have also taken it as an indirect admission that Lopez Obrador's less confrontational strategy did not work, with many experts saying it helped organized crime groups entrench power in vast swaths of the country. The U.S. ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, publicly criticized the approach, saying it had "failed" and "Mexico is not safe." MILITARY TO THE STREETS Some security experts have drawn comparisons between the operations in Sinaloa and the military war waged on the cartels by then-President Felipe Calderon in 2006. That triggered a spiral of violence to which many analysts trace the continued high homicide rates Mexico. The United Nations has repeatedly criticized the use of the armed forces in the fight against crime in Mexico, arguing that it encourages human rights violations. The Mexican government denies that security in the country has been militarized or that human rights abuses are common. Key to Sheinbaum's crime-fighting strategy is her new security chief Omar Garcia Harfuch, an experienced policeman who worked for the president while she was mayor of Mexico City. Sheinbaum sent Garcia Harfuch to Sinaloa to oversee operations. "We know how difficult it is to pacify the country," he said last week after an investigator from his ministry was killed in Sinaloa. The confrontation between rival groups in Sinaloa, which intensified on Sept. 9, has so far killed some 650 people, with more reported missing. In an attempt to contain the conflict, the local security chief was replaced by a military officer over the weekend. In the same week, at least three soldiers were killed by land mines laid by organized crime in two separate locations in the western state of Michoacan. For some experts there is a danger if Sheinbaum seeks to replicate her strategy in Sinaloa across the country. "Each one (criminal group) has its own personality, its own mark, and we have to find the part that hurts them," said Tomas Guevara, an expert on security issues in Sinaloa.
