The Fiji men’s rugby sevens head coach, Osea Kolinisau, is not going to rest despite winning the Dubai Sevens tournament yesterday morning (Fiji time). The Fijians beat Spain 19-5 in the Cup final to end their 22-HSBC SVNS tournament losing streak. “It been a long time coming,” Kolinisau told World Rugby. “I’m so happy that we’ve got the monkey off our back now.” The 39-year-old said from now he wants consistency. Kolinisau highlighted that now he wants Fiji to challenge and win more titles this season. “We’ve worked really hard this last six months. We were disappointed at the Olympics. I told the boys hard work pays off and it paid off here.” An added bonus to Fiji’s win was when utility back Filipe Sauturaga was named Player of the Final. Debutant Kavekini Tanivanuakula said it has been a learning experience. “I’m thankful to God for his guidance as I’ve reached a good place in terms of my rugby career,” the Suva soldier said. “I’ve come to learn a lot of things, which improved my game. I’m thankful to the coaches and team-mates for giving in their time and effort.” Tanivanuakula said it was dream come true for him to win the tournament in his debut. “My favourite moment of this Dubai tournament is when I held the trophy. I hope to improve the way I play in the next tournament in Cape Town, South Africa.” Tanivanuakula said the standard set by the coach and senior players was a different level. “I thank my family and friends for their support and well wishes,” he added. Newcomer George Bose acknowledged divine intervention in their win. The last time Fiji won the Dubai tournament was in 2016. “I had observed the change in the (sevens) game as the other teams have showed class and experience,” he said. “Our bond on the field was the strength behind the win in the final.” Bose said they had to improve their defence going into the final day of the competition. “We hope to further improve our defence in the Cape Town tournament. “To be in the national sevens team is a different level and we should change our mindset when we are at this level. “If we don’t change our mindset it could result a drop in standard for the national sevens team. “At this moment we want to progress further.” Feedback: ioane.asioli@fijisun.com.fj

Column: Trump’s FBI pick Kash Patel, in his own wordsEmployers should prepare for sickest month of the year, says HR software firm Employers should be clear about sick day policies and encourage flu vaccinations, says BrightHR Adam Campbell Dec 12, 2024 12:04 PM Share by Email Share on Facebook Share on X Share on LinkedIn Print Share via Text Message For 2023-24, a Statistics Canada survey revealed only 42 per cent of respondents received a flu vaccination, one per cent less than last year Photo by Kelly Sikkema on Unsplash Listen to this article 00:02:44 Employers should have clear sick-day policies and encourage vaccinations to prevent impacts to productivity and bottom lines, according to human resources software company BrightHR. The company, which monitors more than 7,000 companies and 65,000 employees in Canada, revealed in a Nov. 22 release that 34 per cent of all sickness absences from the flu or colds typically occur between November and January. December is the third “sickest” month of the year, followed by November in second and January in first. Industries heavily reliant on temporary contractors or shift work could be impacted the most by absences this year, BrightHR chief international growth and marketing officer Thea Watson told BIV . She said sectors like education, retail and hospitality could be left with fewer people to do their jobs, which can increase burnout for other employees. For flu-related absences, November and December 2023 tied in second place with the most sick days – each at 131 per cent above last year’s monthly average, according to data from BrightHR. A spokeswoman for BrightHR did not provide BIV with this year's data by publication time. However, Watson says employers can take action and minimize impacts. “One of the first things they [companies] can do is ensure that they're communicating their policies,” she said. This includes being clear about sick days and remote work policies. Flu absences have continued to become more frequent across the country, said Watson, adding this has significant effects on worker productivity and business costs. “It takes anywhere from two to five minutes to process any sick leave,” she said. “You could be spending thousands [of dollars] on just processing sick leave ... depending on your business size.” BrightHR CEO Alan Price said in the release encouraging employers to stay home if they’re feeling unwell could prevent losing other workers to sickness. However, encouragement should also be given for flu vaccinations. Flu vaccinations for adults 18 and older have slightly decreased over the past year, from 43 per cent in 2022-23 to 42 per cent in 2023-24, according to Statistics Canada’s vaccination coverage survey . Among respondents, the most common reason for not getting the flu shot was thinking the vaccine was not needed (31 per cent), with 15 per cent stating they encountered difficulties scheduling an appointment. A contestant on The Price is Right won a car prize that was 32 years in the making. After losing out on a Chevrolet when he appeared in March of 1992 with Bob Barker , Brian came back with a vengeance on Thursday (December 11) and won himself a brand new Toyota in a glorious game show moment. The big win began with host Drew Carey calling Brian up from the audience. He instantly noticed the contestant’s shirt, which showed a younger version of him standing alongside the late host. “I love that shirt. Is that you and Bob Barker?” Carey asked. Holiday spending hacks: How to unwrap savings without sacrificing festive cheerCU Buffs seniors proud of legacy left behind and the standard set for future successCINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Bengals have found all manner of ways to lose close games this season. Sunday's 44-38 loss to AFC North rival Pittsburgh can be blamed on a defense that missed tackles and allowed 520 yards of offense, and three turnovers by Joe Burrow. It's become a familiar story in this disappointing season. Cincinnati (4-8) keeps scoring lots of points but can't close out games. Seven of the Bengals’ eight losses this year have been by one score. Burrow has stopped talking about the possibility of going on a run and making the playoffs. He'd just like to win another game or two. “Playoffs are the furthest thing from my mind,” the fifth-year quarterback said. “You never know what can happen, so I’ll keep putting one foot in front of the other and try to be the best player I can be for the rest of the season, week in and week out.” The Bengals allowed Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson to throw for a season-high 414 yards and three touchdowns. After Wilson threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown, the Steelers (9-3) scored on seven of their last nine possessions. They didn't punt until early in the fourth quarter. Burrow lost two fumbles and threw an interception. “We haven’t done enough to earn the win,” coach Zac Taylor said. “It’s a simple as that. It’s nobody else’s fault but our own. We haven’t earned it.” What’s working Turnovers aside, Burrow had another strong game, finishing with 28 for 38 for 309 yards with three touchdowns. Burrow is having a great season statistically, and he hasn't hidden his disappointment and frustration about Cincinnati's narrow losses. ... WR Ja'Marr Chase had a touchdown catch to bring his league-leading total to 13. What needs help The defense missed tackles and couldn't hold off the Steelers, even with Burrow keeping the game close. It didn’t help that LB Logan Wilson (knee) and DT Sheldon Rankins (illness) had to sit out. The Bengals have allowed 34 or more points six times, including in four of the past five games. Cincinnati became the first NFL team to lose four games in a season in which it scored 33 points or more. Stock up RB Chase Brown has been dependable as the featured back since Zack Moss went down with a neck injury. He rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown against the Steelers. He also had three catches for 30 yards. The second-year back has 677 yards rushing and six TDs. “He’s really coming along, improving his game every single week,” Burrow said. “Pass game, run game, running hard, understanding his protection responsibilities. He’s a guy that practices hard, plays hard, and a guy you can count on.” Stock down The Bengals' coaching staff. Something has got to give. There was no excuse for the defense to play this badly after a bye week. The unit gave up 500-plus yards for the second time this season. Injuries None were reported in the game. Key number 30.3 — The average points per game by the Bengals against teams with a .500 or better record this season. They are 0-7 in those games. Next steps The Bengals will try to regroup before facing the Dallas Cowboys (5-7) next Monday night. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL Mitch Stacy, The Associated Press

Efforts to develop Western Canada as an exporter of low-carbon ammonia to the Asia-Pacific region could run into similar challenges faced by the region’s LNG projects, which raises concerns about potential permitting, construction, transportation and cost hurdles, market sources said. Canada is developing several projects on both coasts to export hydrogen and derivatives like ammonia, which are viewed as potential low-carbon fuel supplies to Europe and Asia. Like its efforts with LNG and other energy-rich nations, Canada is leveraging hydrogen investment tax credits to advance these projects, aiming to finalize low-carbon trade flows. While the growing global LNG market presents an opportunity to displace coal consumption, supporters of low-carbon ammonia see it as an even cleaner alternative for its ability to facilitate overseas shipments of hydrogen, which emits no carbon when burned. A US-based renewable-derived ammonia developer told S&P Global Commodity Insights that while “hydrogen lacks this flexibility, ammonia offers it by integrating into existing systems. The focus on ammonia reflects pragmatism, given uncertainty over the establishment of hydrogen pipeline networks.” Alberta-based Hydrogen Canada Corp. plans to use abundant, low-cost natural gas as a business case to build and operate a 1 million mt/year carbon capture storage-derived “blue” ammonia facility and export infrastructure to serve Asian markets, targeting South Korea and Japan, it said on its website. Global chemicals company Linde is also planning a blue hydrogen facility in Alberta, Canada, expected to be completed by 2028, which will produce gas-fed hydrogen combined with CCS. This project has a long-term agreement to supply its clean hydrogen to Dow’s Fort Saskatchewan ethylene cracker and derivatives site Path2Zero. “A significant challenge is the domestic rail transportation from the Edmonton region to Prince Rupert,” a representative with the Canadian government told Commodity Insights. “Current Transport Canada regulations prohibit long-haul ammonia trains, and both industry and provincial governments in Alberta and British Columbia are working to address this issue.” On Canada’s West Coast, rail and insurance costs are significant challenges for ammonia export projects, said a low-carbon ammonia developer. Unless this ammonia rail liability/insurance discussion gets resolved, West Coast Canadian projects cannot physically deliver ammonia to South Korea, the Canadian government representative added. LNG Canada and Coastal GasLink faced similar challenges with respect to regulatory barriers, a Canada-based low-carbon hydrogen developer added. “Prince Rupert [Trigon Terminal] can handle ammonia. Again, the key issue is delivering the ammonia to the port from the production site,” the government representative said. Challenges previously encountered with LNG are now emerging as ammonia projects have begun to request environmental approvals, bid in auctions, and attempt to secure attractive offtakers. Canadian and global investors have faced difficulties in launching LNG projects on Canada’s West Coast, with several major LNG export projects having been canceled, stopped in court, or abandoned because of climate change disputes, pipeline issues, regulatory hurdles, and environmental concerns. “Regulatory constraints and access to First Nation land were also significant hurdles. To date, we’ve only had three Western Canada projects reach final investment decisions,” said Ross Wyeno, Commodity Insights’ director of global LNG analytics. While these project challenges are offset by a lower expected feedgas price and shorter distance to the Asia-Pacific markets, Wyeno added, “The Western Canadian LNG export projects are among the more expensive projects in the world due to the high cost of the long-haul pipelines required to feed the plant and the remote locations, which are difficult to build in and have limited access to labor.” Canadian projects on the West Coast and some projects in the Midwest US view this cost as competitive because of affordable feedstock natural gas, its economical shipping route to Asian markets, and saving it from passage through the Panama Canal. Platts assessed blue ammonia premium in the US Gulf Coast at $27.75/mt Nov 21, with an outright blue ammonia price at $527.50/mt, considering the premium and the US Gulf FOB assessment of $500/mt. The FOB US Gulf low-carbon ammonia price was assessed at $500/mt, considering a maximum carbon intensity of 0.87 kg CO2eq/kg ammonia under a well-to-gate boundary. Market participants have said projects on Canada’s West Coast are competitive with those on the US Gulf Coast, as they benefit from a shorter route to Asia and avoid the Panama Canal. Blue hydrogen and ammonia pricing from western Canada are largely influenced by rail insurance costs, the government representative said, adding, “While discussions are ongoing, the current domestic political climate, particularly with the upcoming Canada’s federal election, may impact the pace of progress.” Source:Dwayne Haskins’ widow, Kalabrya Haskins , filed court documents Wednesday to voluntarily dismiss the lawsuit she filed against 14 entities following the late NFL quarterback’s death in 2022, according to USA Today Sports . Haskins, who played for Washington and Pittsburgh, was struck and killed by a dump truck while walking across a highway outside Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on April 9, 2022. He was 24 years old. Kalabrya — who became the personal representative of Haskins’ estate after his death — reached settlements with those involved, and the wrongful death case in Florida is now closed, her attorney, Rick Ellsley , said Thursday. “All of the settlements that were obtained have now been paid and so now the wrongful death case has been closed,” Ellsley wrote in a text message to USA Today Sports Thursday morning, adding the financial terms of the settlements were “substantial.” Her attorney did not divulge any specific amounts. The latest development came more than a year after Kalabrya reached a partial settlement against the driver, the owner and the broker of the dump truck that struck and killed Haskins. After that, Kalabrya settled with a number of other defendants. There were three active defendants at the time Kalabrya filed to dismiss the wrongful death lawsuit on Wednesday. Kalabrya filed her initial lawsuit in Broward County, Florida, on April 10, 2023. In it, Kalabrya alleged Haskins — a former first-round draft pick — was drugged, blackmailed and robbed before he was struck and killed by a dump truck while attempting to cross a highway. In a 911 call on the morning of Haskins’ death, Kalabrya said the quarterback was “stuck” on the side of a Florida highway and “had to go walk and get gas.” Kalabrya, who was not with Haskins at the time of his death, explained to the dispatcher that her husband “was stranded by himself and he was walking,” and that he would call her back after he had finished putting gas in his vehicle. A toxicology report stated Haskins was legally drunk , with medical examiner reports indicating he was triple the Florida legal limit of .08 to drive. Haskins also tested positive for ketamine and norketamine, drugs used by medical professionals as anesthetics, but can also be used recreationally. In a separate filing earlier this week, Kalabrya’s attorneys disputed claims made in a separate lawsuit filed by Haskins’ parents, Dwayne Haskins Sr., his wife, Tamara, and their daughter, Tamia, alleging Kalabrya harassed them in the aftermath of the quarterback’s death, according to USA Today Sports. In their filing, Haskins’ family alleged that Kalabrya harassed them when they used his name, image and likeness on social media and challenged a non-profit foundation that they made in the quarterback’s name. Kalabrya, who played basketball at Michigan State, is the sister of free agent WNBA guard Kysre Gondrezick. A former Rose Bowl MVP and Heisman Trophy finalist at Ohio State, Haskins was selected by Washington with the No. 15 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He was a member of the Steelers at the time of his passing.

Aleksander Barkov, Sam Bennett, Aaron Ekblad, Evan Rodrigues and Adam Boqvist also scored for Florida, which won 6-3 at Carolina on Friday. The Panthers have won three straight — that streak following a stretch of six losses in seven games for the Stanley Cup champions. It was Knight’s fourth career shutout, his first since Nov. 9, 2022 — also at home against Carolina. Spencer Martin made 23 saves on 28 shots for the Hurricanes, who have dropped four of their last six games (2-3-1). It was Martin’s fourth consecutive start for Carolina. Takeaways Hurricanes: This was the first time all season that the Hurricanes failed to get a point in the game immediately following a loss. Carolina was 4-0-1 after a defeat entering Saturday. Panthers: A big day for Samoskevich — his alma mater Michigan beat Ohio State in football on Saturday, that game ending just before the Florida-Carolina game started. The Panthers are 5-0-0 when he scores this season. Sam Reinhart had each of the four most recent Florida goals at 19:59, before Samoskevich got his Saturday. high-stakes political battle is brewing in the Latur Rural assembly constituency in central Maharashtra. When the counting of votes will commence on November 23, the political experts predict a tight contest between between Congress MLA Dheeraj Deshmukh, son of former Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, and BJP MLC Ramesh Karad. The BJP has intensified its efforts to challenge the Congress's hold on Latur Rural. Karad, who had previously hoped for a BJP ticket in 2019, was disappointed when the seat was allotted to Shiv Sena under a seat-sharing arrangement. In the 2019 elections, Dheeraj Deshmukh secured a comfortable victory, winning by a margin of 1,35,006 votes. The Shiv Sena candidate, Sachin Deshmukh, ran a low-key campaign, which allowed Dheeraj to consolidate his position. The NOTA (None of the Above) option garnered 27,500 votes, highlighting voter dissatisfaction during that election. The political contest has been further energized by the presence of candidates from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA). MNS candidate Santosh Nagargoje is focusing on rural voters, particularly in areas where he has reportedly gained support from local communities. VBA's Dr. Vijay Ajnikar, meanwhile, is conducting corner meetings to engage with voters and make his case. Though both candidates are drawing attention, political observers expect the main fight to be between Deshmukh and Karad. The Latur Rural constituency, which covers Renapur tehsil, most of Latur tehsil, and parts of Ausa, has been a Congress bastion for over a decade. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Congress secured leads in both Latur City and Latur Rural, further solidifying its dominance in the area. Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange had initially planned to field a candidate in the constituency but later withdrew, stating that he would not support any of the current candidates.
