By DAVID McHUGH The Associated Press FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Germany’s technology and services company Bosch said Friday it planned to reduce its automotive division workforce by as many as 5,500 jobs in the next several years in another sign of the headwinds hitting the German and global auto industries. The company cited stagnating global auto sales, too much factory capacity in the auto industry compared with sales prospects and a slower than expected transition to electric-powered, software-controlled vehicles. The news comes two days after Ford Motor Co. announced plans to drop 4,000 jobs in Europe , and with Volkswagen employees threatening work stoppages over what they say management has told them are plans to close as many as three factories in Germany. Revenue at Stellantis , created through the 2021 merger of PSA Peugeot and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, tumbled 27% in its most recent quarter that ended this fall. Auto sales have slowed this year in Europe as consumers stung by inflation hold back on spending, while automakers have sunk billions into developing electric cars only to see slower sales than expected and new competition from cheaper Chinese brands. The German government abruptly cancelled purchase incentives at the end of last year, sending electric vehicles sales in that country down by 27% over the first nine months of this year. Some 3,500 of the job reductions at Bosch would come before the end of 2027 and would hit the part of the company that develops advanced driver assistance and automated driving technologies, as well as centralized vehicle software, said Bosch, which is headquartered in Gerlingen near Stuttgart. About half those job reductions would be at locations in Germany. “The auto industry has significant overcapacities,” the company said in a statement. “In addition, the market for future technologies is not developing as originally expected ... At the moment, many projects in this business area are being put off or abandoned by automakers.” In addition, 750 jobs would be lost at a plant in Hildesheim, Germany by end 2032, 600 of those by the end of 2026. A plant in Schwaebisch Gmund would lose some 1,300 over between 2027 and 2030. The reductions are still in the planning stage and final numbers would have to be agreed with employee representatives and carried out in what the company said would be a socially responsible way. While automakers put their names on the cars they sell, most of the car is actually made by a series of suppliers Some 230,000 people work for Bosch’s mobility division, out of a global workforce of 429,000. In addition to its business as an auto industry technology supplier Bosch makes factory and building equipment and software across a range of products including industrial boilers and waste-heat recovery systems, video security systems, and power tools. From Maui to the Caribbean, Thanksgiving tournaments a beloved part of college basketball

Read unlimited articles for free today: Already have an account? ATLANTA (AP) — Deliberations are underway in Atlanta after a year of testimony in the gang and racketeering trial that originally included the rapper Young Thug. Jurors are considering whether to convict Shannon Stillwell and Deamonte Kendrick, who raps as Yak Gotti, on gang, murder, drug and gun charges. The original indictment charged 28 people with conspiring to violate Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. Opening statements in the trial for six of those defendants happened a year ago. Four of them, including Young Thug, pleaded guilty last month. The rapper was freed on probation. Stillwell and Kendrick rejected plea deals after more than a week of negotiations, and their lawyers chose not to present evidence or witnesses. Both seemed to be in good spirits Tuesday morning after closings wrapped the previous night. Kendrick was chatting and laughing with Stillwell and his lawyers before the jury arrived for instructions. Kendrick and Stillwell were charged in the 2015 killing of Donovan Thomas Jr., also known as “Big Nut,” in an Atlanta barbershop. Prosecutors painted Stillwell and Kendrick as members of a violent street called Young Slime Life, or YSL, co-founded in 2012 by Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams. During closings on Monday, they pointed to tattoos, song lyrics and social media posts they said proved members, including Stillwell, admitted to killing people in rival gangs. Prosecutors say Thomas was in a rival gang. Stillwell was also charged in the 2022 killing of Shymel Drinks, which prosecutors said was in retaliation for the killing of two YSL associates days earlier. Defense attorneys Doug Weinstein and Max Schardt said the state presented unreliable witnesses, weak evidence and cherry-picked lyrics and social media posts to push a false narrative about Stillwell, Kendrick and the members of YSL. Schardt, Stillwell’s attorney, reminded the jury that alleged YSL affiliates said during the trial that they had lied to police. Law enforcement played a “sick game” by promising they would escape long prison sentences if they said what police wanted them to say, Schardt said. He theorized that one of those witnesses could have killed Thomas. The truth is that their clients were just trying to escape poverty through music, Schardt said. “As a whole, we know the struggles that these communities have had,” Schardt said. “A sad, tacit acceptance that it’s either rap, prison or death.” Young Thug’s record label is also known as YSL, an acronym of Young Stoner Life. Kendrick was featured on two popular songs from the label’s compilation album Slime Language 2, “Take It to Trial” and “Slatty,” which prosecutors presented as evidence in the trial. Weinstein, Kendrick’s defense attorney, said during closings it was wrong for prosecutors to target the defendants for their music and lyrics. Prosecutor Simone Hylton disagreed, and said surveillance footage and phone evidence supported her case. “They have the audacity to think they can just brag about killing somebody and nobody’s gonna hold them accountable,” Hylton said. The trial had more than its fair share of delays. Jury selection took nearly 10 months, and Stillwell was stabbed last year at the Fulton County jail, which paused trial proceedings. Judge Paige Reese Whitaker took over after Fulton County Superior Court Chief Judge Ural Glanville was removed from the case in July because he had a meeting with prosecutors and a state witness without defense attorneys present. Whitaker often lost patience with prosecutors over moves such as not sharing evidence with defense attorneys, once accusing them of “poor lawyering.” But the trial sped up under her watch. In October, four defendants, including Young Thug, pleaded guilty, with the rapper entering a non-negotiated or “blind” plea, meaning he didn’t have a deal worked out with prosecutors. Nine people charged in the indictment, including rapper Gunna, accepted plea deals before the trial began. Charges against 12 others are pending. Prosecutors dropped charges against one defendant after he was convicted of murder in an unrelated case. ___ Kramon is a corps member for The Associated Press/Report for America Statehouse News Initiative. The Milwaukee Bucks have started off the 2024-25 NBA season with an 8-9 record. While it isn’t exactly how they had hoped to begin the year, they’re not in a horrible position. Doc Rivers and company have looked the part of contenders in some games, but have fallen completely flat in others. Of course, the Bucks have been forced to play the entire season so far without star forward Khris Middleton . He has been out due to an ankle injury. The hope is that he will return soon. Now, the Milwaukee Bucks have received a major update about Middleton just ahead of Thanksgiving. Milwaukee Bucks Receive Major Injury Update on Khris Middleton According to a report from ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania , Middleton has taken a big step towards returning to the court. He was able to participate in five-on-five drills and the goal is to bring him back sometime after Thanksgiving. “I’m told for the first time in this rehab process from bilateral ankle surgeries, Khris Middleton completed full five-on-five scrimmages on Monday with the Bucks in Miami,” Charania revealed. “The team is hopeful that he is going to be able to make his season debut at some point after Thanksgiving. From what I’m told, he has been already cleared medically to play, but for him it’s about comfort. [He intends to return] when he’s fully right and feels that he’s going to be able to make an impact, like we know Khris Middleton can, when he is fully healthy.” Middleton getting back on the court could be the boost that the Bucks need to get back to playing to their full potential. Last season, the 33-year-old ended up playing in 55 games. He averaged 15.1 points per game to go along with 5.3 assists and 4.7 rebounds. In addition to those averages, Middleton shot 49.3 percent from the floor and 38.1 percent from three-point range. While he has been medically cleared for quite some time, Middleton has been being patient and focusing at being at 100 percent before he returns for the Milwaukee Bucks. All of that being said, the hope is that he will be back on the floor in the near future. The Bucks could use the help and he would take pressure off of both Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard. Only time will tell, but this update is a step in the right direction. This article first appeared on WI Sports Heroics and was syndicated with permission.

Australia’s submarine plans are slipping due to aging Collins-class vessels and AUKUS uncertainties, forcing tough decisions on its future underwater warfare capabilities. This month, Naval News that the Australian government has designated the Collins class conventional submarine sustainment program as a “product of concern,” following a Defense Australia to enhance ministerial oversight of this critical capability. Naval News says this announcement underscores the challenges faced in extending the operational life of these submarines beyond their original design. It mentions that the Albanese Government is committed to investing AUD 4 to 5 billion (US$2.56-3.2 billion) over the next decade to ensure the Collins class remains effective until its planned withdrawal in the 2030s. The report notes that this effort includes a new AUD 2.2 billion sustainment contract with the Australian Shipbuilding Company, signed in June 2024. This contract replaces the previous one, which included an AUD 120 million efficiency dividend under the former coalition government. Naval News mentions that the Collins class has experienced significant issues, including unprecedented levels of corrosion, necessitating comprehensive remediation measures. It says the product of concern designation aims to address these challenges through enhanced oversight and a planned summit in early 2025. The report says this initiative is part of a broader effort to maintain Australia’s maritime security and ensure no capability gap until the transition to conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines is complete. Underscoring the gravity of the problem, Australian Broadcasting Corporation News in November 2024 that the Royal Australian Navy is grappling with a significant operational challenge. The report says the navy currently has only one fully operational submarine from its fleet of six Collins-class vessels. According to ABC News, this situation arises due to urgent repairs and scheduled upgrades required for the aging fleet, which has been plagued by unprecedented hull corrosion. The report says two submarines are stationed at Adelaide’s Osborne shipyard, where worker strikes are causing delays in their extensive maintenance, known as full-cycle docking. Further, the report mentions three submarines are at Western Australia’s Garden Island naval base, with at least one awaiting certification to return to service. Despite these challenges, ABC News maintains that Defense Australia can meet government-directed operational availability levels, although specific submarines’ precise locations and availabilities remain undisclosed for security reasons. While Australia may hope to acquire nuclear attack submarines (SSNs) under the AUKUS framework to restore its underwater warfare capabilities, that prospect faces an uncertain future. Asia Times this month that Australia’s nuclear submarine ambitions under the AUKUS security pact face significant challenges due to a weak US production base, uncertainties from a second Trump administration and reluctance to share nuclear technology. A recent US Congressional Research Service (CRS) suggests that US SSNs could perform Australian and US missions in the region in lieu of Canberra’s acquiring nuclear attack submarines (SSNs) under AUKUS. This arrangement would be similar to existing ones between the US and its NATO allies. The report outlines alternative plans, including forward rotations of US and UK SSNs to Australia and reinvesting funds intended for SSNs into other military assets. The report warns that if Australia’s SSN plans reach a cost-accounting death spiral, it could reduce funding for other military capabilities, impacting deterrence against China. Critics argue that the AUKUS SSN project lacks a clear strategic rationale and that Australia should leverage its distance from China instead of projecting military power into China’s near seas. US President-elect Donald Trump’s return to the White House raises concerns about the future of AUKUS, with potential demands for increased Australian contributions. Further, Australia’s reluctance to cooperate on nuclear power complicates its SSN ambitions. Given Australia’s looming underwater warfare capability gap and the unclear future of AUKUS, Australia may have to reconsider acquiring SSNs from an alternative source. In an for the Strategist this month, Peter Briggs argues that Australia should prepare to acquire at least 12 French Suffren-class SSNs, as the current AUKUS plan for eight SSNs faces increasing risks. Briggs points out that the AUKUS plan, which includes three US-built and five British-built SSNs, is unlikely to meet deadlines due to production delays and design challenges. He says that the Australian Government, elected next year, should decide by 2026 whether to switch to the French design to ensure deliveries by 2038. He mentions that the Suffren class, already in service with the French Navy, offers a more feasible solution with its 5,300-ton displacement, 70-day endurance, and 60-person crew. According to him, this design is optimized for anti-submarine warfare and the vessel can carry missiles and special forces. Briggs says the AUKUS SSN plan’s mixed designs and oversized UK submarines, driven by reactor dimensions, are unsuitable for Australia’s needs and pose significant crew and cost challenges. He adds that US and UK submarine production issues further complicate the AUKUS plan, making the French Suffren class a more practical and affordable alternative. He says this shift would allow Australia to maintain its SSN training programs with the US and UK while establishing a joint construction program with France to address its maritime security needs. However, acquiring 12 French-built Suffren-class SSNs would require a radical shift in Australia’s defense posture, away from the AUKUS arrangement and toward dependence on French defense infrastructure. While the Suffren class is a capable SSN, the opportunity cost of abandoning the AUKUS framework and the need for long-term nuclear infrastructure investment makes it a politically and strategically risky option. In view of Australia’s aging Collins submarines and the unclear future of its AUKUS SSN plans, debates exist about whether the AUKUS framework was the right approach to restoring the country’s underwater warfare capabilities. In a June 2024 published by the United States Studies Center, Richard Dunley argues that the plan is optimal given limited alternatives. He emphasizes the acquisition of Virginia-class SSNs from the US as a “stopgap” solution that accelerates Australia’s nuclear submarine capability. He also highlights the advantage of co-developing the AUKUS SSN with the UK to sustain a joint industrial base. In contrast, Elizabeth Buchanan critiques the AUKUS SSN as overly ambitious and costly, advocating for a more practical approach centered on leveraging US and UK submarines through Australia’s “pit-stop power.” This arrangement, she argues, better aligns with Australia’s strategic and resource constraints.

After losing 7-2 to the worst team in the Pacific Division on Monday, the Kings will pivot straight into Wednesday’s showdown with the NHL’s best club. The Winnipeg Jets just moved to 18-4-0 with a resounding 4-1 win over another early-season powerhouse, the Minnesota Wild. Now, Winnipeg’s trip south will signify a visit from some former Kings cohorts: Gabriel Vilardi, Alex Iafallo and Rasmus Kupari, all of whom became Jets as a result of the disastrous Pierre-Luc Dubois trade . Vilardi has continued to be one of the top net-front presences in the NHL on the power play as well as a threat from the slot offensively, while providing outstanding defense and winning 63.6% of his faceoffs this season. Iafallo has emerged as a solid second-unit contributor for Winnipeg and scored two goals against Minnesota, including one with the extra man that was his 100th career tally, while Kupari recorded an assist. They’ve operated behind the team’s top-five scorers – Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, Nikolaj Ehlers, Josh Morrissey and Neal Pionk – who have combined for 115 points in 22 games. During last season’s only meeting in Los Angeles, Vilardi scored a career-high four points to match the contributions of then-linemate Ehlers as the Jets turned a two-goal deficit into a comfortable win by way of five unanswered goals. That was part of a stretch of 34 straight games in which Winnipeg and its top goalie, Connor Hellebuyck, allowed three goals or fewer. This season, more feats have followed as the Jets have compiled the NHL’s best points total, points percentage, goal differential, power-play conversion rate, goals-against average and save percentage, all while scoring the most goals of any team. They’ve had two winning streaks of seven or more games in just 22 matches. While the Jets soared, the Kings remained in a holding pattern. They appeared to have four winnable games heading into this clash with the league’s top team, but continued their one-step-forward-one-step-back pattern by splitting bouts with Buffalo , Detroit , Seattle and San Jose. They’ve won consecutive games three times this season, but never more than two in a row. Their latest disappointment saw them fall to 0-2-0 in San Jose in 2024-25, losing to the lottery-bound Sharks on Monday in a game that was tied at the second intermission. No. 1 overall pick Macklin Celebrini got the third-period party started with a goal for San Jose and later drew a penalty before scoring a second goal, five-on-three. Kings coach Jim Hiller said that no one should “disrespect” San Jose – which had dropped six of seven decisions entering the contest – but finally deemed an effort, in this case a five-goals-allowed final frame, to be “unacceptable.” Related Articles “That’s not a team that’s trying to tank, that’s a good hockey team, strong players, real good back end. We played them three times, they beat us twice, we barely beat them in the one at home,” Hiller said. “We completely fell apart in the third period. That’s just unacceptable, what happened in the third.” Anže Kopitar’s hand stayed hot with a goal and an assist to match the two points of linemate Adrian Kempe. Kempe has notched 13 points over his past 12 games while Kopitar has 16 points across those same dozen contests, putting the 37-year-old on track to top his best single-season total of 92 points from the 2017-18 season.
