Saying the federal government and the military know the origin of the drones that are confounding residents from New Jersey, New York, and the Philadelphia suburbs, President-elect Donald Trump asserted on Monday that U.S. leaders won’t comment because ”for some reason, they want to keep people in suspense.” Trump made his remarks during a news conference at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Fla., just 36 days before he returns to the Oval Office. He offered no proof of his statements, nor did he provide an explanation as to why President Joe Biden and the Pentagon would keep Americans in the dark about the nighttime flying objects that have puzzled and worried people watching them swoop and hover overhead. “Look, the government knows what is happening. Look, our military knows where they took off from. If it’s a garage, they can go right into that garage,” Trump said. “I think they’re better off saying what it is,” he said, adding that he’s canceling a planned trip to his club in New Jersey because the drones are “very close to Bedminster.” Asked if he’d received an intelligence briefing on the drones, Trump responded, “I don’t want to comment on that.” He also concluded, “I can’t imagine it’s the enemy.” On Sunday, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos in an interview, “There’s no question people are seeing drones.” Mayorkas added, “I want to assure the American public that we in the federal government have deployed additional resources, personnel, technology to assist the New Jersey State Police in addressing the drone sightings. ... I want to assure the American public that we are on it.” Prior to Mayorkas’ appearance, federal officials had said the drones were possibly manned aircraft and “inaccurate sightings.” On Monday, U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, a Republican who represents Bucks County, demanded that Mayorkas deploy drone-tracking detection systems “to understand the flight patterns and security risk posed” by the drones, which “present serious security concerns that need to be addressed immediately.” In addition, Fitzpatrick asked for an immediate vote on a bill he’s cosponsoring known as the Safeguarding the Homeland from the Threats Posed by Unmanned Aircraft Systems Act. It calls for enhancing the federal government’s ability to protect Americans from the risks associated with unmanned aircraft systems. ©2024 The Philadelphia Inquirer, LLC. Visit at inquirer.com . TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A large number of mysterious drones have been reported flying over New Jersey and across the eastern U.S., sparking speculation and concern over where they came from and why. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and U.S. Sen. Andy Kim have both gone out on drone hunts, hoping for answers. The FBI, Homeland Security, state police and other agencies are investigating. Murphy and law enforcement officials have stressed that the drones don’t appear to be a threat to public safety , but many state and municipal lawmakers have nonetheless called for stricter rules about who can fly the unmanned aircraft — and to be allowed to shoot them out of the sky. Dozens of witnesses have reported seeing drones statewide since mid-November, including near the Picatinny Arsenal, a military research and manufacturing facility, and over President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster. Murphy, a Democrat, said Monday that equipment supplied by the federal government has yielded little new information. He declined to describe the equipment except to say it was powerful and could even “mitigate” the drones, though he added that’s not currently legal on U.S. soil. The state tallied 12 sightings Saturday and just one on Sunday. Murphy urged Congress to give states more authority to deal with the drones. The growing anxiety among some residents is not lost on the Biden administration, which has faced criticism from Trump for not dealing with the matter more aggressively. In a call with reporters Saturday that was organized by the White House, senior officials from the FBI, Pentagon, Federal Aviation Administration and other agencies sought to reassure the public that the drones are not a national security or public safety threat, or the handywork of a malicious foreign actor. The White House has said a review of the reported drone sightings shows many of them are manned aircraft being flown lawfully, echoing the opinions of officials and drone experts. Authorities say they do not know. The Department of Homeland Security and FBI said they have no evidence that the aircraft pose “a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus.” Speculation has nevertheless raged online, with some expressing concerns that the drones could be part of a nefarious plot by foreign agents. Officials stress that ongoing investigations have found no evidence to support such concerns, but U.S. Rep Chris Smith, a Republican, on Saturday echoed such speculation. “The elusive maneuvering of these drones suggests a major military power sophistication that begs the question whether they have been deployed to test our defense capabilities — or worse — by violent dictatorships, perhaps maybe Russia, or China, or Iran, or North Korea,” he said. On Monday, Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder cast doubt on the idea that the drones are engaged in intelligence gathering, given how loud and bright they are. He said about 1 million drones are registered drones in the U.S. and about 8,000 flying on any given day. Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh has said the aircraft are not U.S. military drones. In Boston, city police arrested two men accused of operating a drone “dangerously close” to Logan Airport on Saturday night. Authorities said an officer using drone monitoring technology detected the aircraft and the location of the operators. A third man fled police and remains at large. Authorities said the two men face trespassing charges and could face more charges and fines. Drones flying around Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio, forced base officials to close its airspace for about four hours late Friday into early Saturday, said Robert Purtiman, a base spokesperson. It was the first time drones had been spotted at the base, one of the largest in the world, and no sightings have been reported since, Purtiman said Monday. He said the drones had no impact on any facilities on the base. Trump has said he believes the government knows more than it’s saying. “Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, shoot them down!!!” he posted on Truth Social. Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut last week called for the drones to “shot down." Rep. Smith urged the Pentagon to authorize the use of force to bring down one or more drones to try to figure out who deployed them. The objects could be downed over the ocean or in an unpopulated area on land, Smith said Saturday. “Why can't we bag at least one of these drones and get to the bottom of it?” Smith said. Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden said members of the public must not try to shoot down drones, as that would violate state and federal laws. Drone sightings were also reported in New York, where a permit is required. Mayor Eric Adams said the city was investigating and collaborating with New Jersey and federal officials. The runways at Stewart International Airport — about 60 miles (100 kilometers) north of the city — were shut down for about an hour Friday night because of drone activity, Gov. Kathy Hochul said. “This has gone too far,” she said in a statement. The governor called on Congress to strengthen the FAA’s oversight of drones and give more investigative authority to state and local law enforcement. Two people said they spotted an aircraft Thursday night near Virginia Beach that was unlike any other they’ve seen. The object flew from over the ocean toward an Army National Guard facility, John Knight told The Virginian-Pilot. “It flew like a helicopter but made no noise,” he said. The Virginia National Guard said it is investigating. In Massachusetts, 10 to 15 drones were reported hovering over a home Thursday night in Harwich on Cape Cod. A resident told police they were bright and she observed them for more than an hour. Earlier that evening, an off-duty police officer in the same town noticed similar activity near a public safety complex, police said. The information was forwarded to the FBI and Massachusetts State Police. Associated Press writers John Seewer in Toledo, Ohio; Bruce Schreiner in Shelbyville, Kentucky; and Aamer Madhani in West Palm Beach, Florida, contributed.

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Austin Seibert missed his second extra point of the game with 21 seconds left after Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin connected on an 86-yard touchdown, Juanyeh Thomas returned the ensuing onside kick attempt for a touchdown and the Dallas Cowboys pulled out a 34-26 victory Sunday that extended the Washington Commanders’ skid to three games. Seibert, who missed the previous two games with a right hip injury, was wide left on the point-after attempt following a low snap. Thomas then took the kick back 43 yards as the Cowboys (4-7) ended their losing streak at five in improbable fashion. Javascript is required for you to be able to read premium content. England manager Sarina Wiegman has demanded her team continue to push on after their 0-0 draw with the women's national team (USWNT) at Wembley on Saturday, but praised their defensive effort. The USWNT's head coach Emma Hayes came away from Wembley believing her team should have won the match as they had the bulk of possession and chances. For Wiegman, she saw this as an improved performance after they lost their last match at Wembley to in October. "This shows where we are at and we need to keep improving," Wiegman told ITV. "It is November now. This is good but we want to be better again. We have to be better again." As build momentum towards the Euros next summer, they are still in the process of evolving. Wiegman said she was pleased with their defensive effort, given they had kept just four clean sheets in their previous 19 matches heading into Saturday's match with the reigning Olympic champions. "I thought it was a very intense game," Wiegman said. "Of course we know the USWNT is very dynamic [and] explosive in going forward. Our defence was solid, we were defending as a team, very strong. They challenged us on the wings, I think we solved that well and in the box, we defended that pretty good. "In possession, the first half we wanted to keep the ball better ... Sometimes we'd get out of the press and lose the ball quickly. Second half we got momentum and we did better and both teams were going for the win, so I don't think it was boring [for the fans]. I'm happy with the team performance." Wiegman said the team went into the match wanting to press more than they had in the past, but they had to work for it to click against the USWNT. She handed and starts against the USWNT, and restored in goal. Earps was arguably England's star performer as she kept the USWNT at bay, and she said post-match she was pleased with the team's performance as they look to end a tricky 2024 on a high. "I think it has been a tough year," Earps told ITV. "A few tough results. We know what we can do as a group. It is about figuring out how we can play. "That's the thing with friendlies, you can experiment with a few things. Drawing against the Olympic champions is no small thing but we want to be winning those games."Timothy P. Griffin

Balancing the beamMary Trump Says Her Uncle Donald Is 'Putin's Puppet'

Sports icon Alex Scott has revealed vile trolls threatened to throw acid in her face as they attacked her over her work. The 40-year-old former England player has built an impressive presenting career since hanging up her football boots - regularly hosting the BBC's The One Show and offering pundit skills on BBC Sport. But the star has been the target of vicious social media trolls who have bombarded her with racist abuse and threatened to attack her in real life. Alex - who has been dating pop beauty Jess Glynne since 2023 - has revealed she the abuse against her reached a terrifying new level when it was rumoured she would take over the hosting of sporting based game show A Question Of Sport. The long-running BBC show had been hosted by Sue Barker from 1997 until her exit in 2021. Rumours circled that Alex would be the star to take over the main host chair - however, the rumours turned out to be false as Paddy McGuinness took over the show. However, Alex was threatened with physical violence after the speculation reached a new high ahead of the 2021 season. Recounting her ordeal with The Times, Alex said: "I was scared to go out of the house because these trolls were saying they were going to throw acid in my face." She added: "There are negatives to fame. I’ve had plenty of racism, abuse and even death threats." Alex went on to explain that she has been routinely targeted negatively over her TV career following her 2017 retirement from professional sport. She said: "People were saying, 'She’s only on TV because she’s black, female and younger. She’s just ticking boxes'... Luckily there are other people who keep me smiling. They’ll come up to me in my local shop and say, 'Keep going,' and that’s what I do." When Paddy took over A Question of Sport, he sparked a furious backlash from fans as many noted he had no sporting qualifications of his own. The backlash appeared to impact ratings of the show - which sharply declined and the long-running game show was axed by the BBC in 2023 after it had been on the air for 55 years. The axe swung down on the series just two years after Paddy took up the reigns. In May 2021, Alex was unveiled as a host of Football Focus - making history by becoming the show’s first permanent female host in its 46-year history. Sharing her joy over the announcement at the time, Alex said in a statement: "When I was a kid, I would never have watched television and thought someone like me could be presenting a programme like Football Focus. For the BBC to trust me with this role and allow me to be my true, authentic self means a lot. To say I’m the Football Focus presenter feels surreal. I’ve had some amazing messages and an incredible reaction on social media - I want to thank everyone for their support." Fallout from a regulation raising concerns amongst businesses, labor groups, government officials, and even environmental advocates . Let’s take a step back. Founded over 50 years ago, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has been a world leader in air pollution control, smog reduction, and climate science. And the air across Southern California is better for it. However, CARB’s new “In-Use Locomotive Regulation,” mandating railroads like Union Pacific and BNSF set aside hundreds of millions of dollars today for the technology of the future, risks undermining this precarious balance. While the goal of reducing emissions is commendable, the technology required to meet this mandate is not yet commercially viable to move freight across the country. BNSF has said that its planned $1.5 billion investment in the Barstow International Gateway (BIG) is in jeopardy if the regulation moves forward. As a result, this regulation could jeopardize over 20,000 direct and indirect jobs in the high desert. BNSF plans to develop the 4,500-acre Barstow rail yard, intermodal facility and warehouses for transloading freight project in the next few years, creating thousands of jobs and reducing truck miles traveled from the 130-mile trip from the ports to the Inland Empire along the Interstate 15 corridor. The project would also reduce vehicle miles traveled up and down the Cajon Pass from high desert residents who would have job opportunities closer to home. However, the costs of complying with the regulation and transitioning to non-existent technology would divert capital and resources from railroads, threatening the viability of significant investments like BIG. The potential loss of the BIG project would deal a significant blow to the local economy, particularly to the working families in the region. Moreover, over 86,000 businesses and one in nine jobs in Southern California connected to the San Pedro Bay Port Complex depend on efficient rail connections. Maintaining these connections is essential for the region’s growth and stability and we cannot afford increased traffic congestion and carbon emissions from continuing to force freight onto highways. BIG is also touted to be a state-of-the-art answer to many of the regional and national supply chain issues we’ve all felt over the last several years as our ports have been winning back trade from importers because they are rail connected. While the goals of CARB’s locomotive rule are aligned with our shared commitment to addressing climate change, the regulation’s timing and feasibility are out of step with current technological realities. Our organizations agree with CARB on this: we see a path forward for zero emissions locomotives; we need to convene to align timing, technology, and transition. As Californians, we understand the urgency of transitioning to a zero-emission future, but we must also ensure that our policies support both environmental and economic sustainability. By aligning climate goals with technological capabilities, we can protect jobs, support economic growth, and continue to lead in the fight against climate change while maintaining good jobs for working families in our region.
