The Defence Secretary has said that “proscription is not a matter for now” in relation to the UK’s ban on the group that has taken power in Syria. John Healey said that the Government’s “interest” in Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), is “that they live up to their promises to protect” rights, when he spoke to reporters after a Cobra meeting on Thursday. HTS is banned in the UK because of its past association with al Qaida, the terrorist organisation once led by Osama bin Laden. But its leader, Abu Mohammed al-Golani, cut ties with al Qaida years ago and has sought to present his group as a more moderate and inclusive organisation, leading some to suggest the group should no longer be proscribed. When asked whether the Government was considering the status of the group, Mr Healey said: “Proscription is not a matter for now. “It doesn’t stop us talking to all the parties, and our interest in HTS is that they live up to their promises to protect the rights of all individuals and all groups, to respect international law and to prevent Syria becoming a base for a fresh terrorist threat.” Mr Healey said that Thursday’s meeting was “about making sure we have, as a Government, a laser focus on the role that we can play with allies to see a stable, peaceful transition. “So that the Syrians get the government they need for the future, and the region can see the stability in the future that it also needs.” Cobra meetings are called when ministers or officials need to respond to urgent matters. Following the toppling of the Bashar Assad regime over the weekend, the UK has paused decisions on asylum applications from Syria. Thousands of Syrians have been granted asylum in the UK but, earlier this week, the Home Office said decisions on applications would be paused while events unfold in Damascus. When asked how long the system would be paused for, and whether the move was fair, Mr Healey said on Thursday: “This is early days. “It’s a measure in response to rapidly changing developments, and the most important thing for us now is that the UK plays and will continue to play a full role with allies to see a stable, peaceful, orderly transition and that requires a political process. “It requires dialogue at the heart of it, and today’s ministerial meeting, the Cobra meeting, was about making sure that we do just that.” Earlier on Thursday, G7 leaders said that they “stand with the people of Syria” and “denounce terrorism and violent extremism in all its forms”. In a statement, Sir Keir Starmer and his counterparts said: “The G7 will work with and fully support a future Syrian government that abides by those standards and results from that process.” It went on: “After decades of atrocities committed by the Assad regime, we stand with the people of Syria. We denounce terrorism and violent extremism in all its forms. “We are hopeful that anyone seeking a role in governing Syria will demonstrate a commitment to the rights of all Syrians, prevent the collapse of state institutions, work on the recovery and rehabilitation of the country, and ensure the conditions for safe and dignified voluntary return to Syria of all those who were forced to flee the country.”

Needing a win in their 2007 regular season finale to advance to the BCS national championship game, the Mountaineers lost at home to heavy underdog Pittsburgh, 13-9. “We picked an awful time to have our worst offensive game in years,” Rodriguez said after the game. Despite earning a berth in the Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma as a consolation prize, Rodriguez was gone two weeks later, taking some of his assistant coaches and recruits with him to Michigan. Rodriguez has insisted the Pitt loss had nothing to do with him leaving. He has said promises made by the school’s administration were not kept and his request for more money for his assistant coaches was rejected. Rodriguez said his relationship with then-athletic director Ed Pastilong had disintegrated by August 2007 to the point that the two men barely spoke. West Virginia went to court in an attempt to recoup Rodriguez’s $4 million buyout. Eventually, Michigan paid $2.5 million and Rodriguez paid $1.5 million to settle the dispute. Things didn’t go well for Rodriguez in Ann Arbor. He went 15-22 and was fired after the 2010 season. His stay at Michigan was marred by embarrassing losses and NCAA violations for exceeding limits on practice and training time at college football’s winningest program. After that he went 43-35 over six years as coach at Arizona. Rodriguez was fired in January 2018 after his former administrative assistant filed a claim with the Arizona attorney general’s office accusing him of sexually harassing her and creating a hostile work environment. The university said it couldn’t substantiate the claims but was concerned about the “direction and climate of the football program.” The lawsuit was later dismissed. Rodriguez spent one season each as offensive coordinator at Mississippi and Louisiana-Monroe and went 27-10 the past three seasons as coach at Jacksonville State, which moved from the Championship Subdivision to the FBS in 2023. Using an up-tempo, spread offense, Rodriguez has a 190-129-2 career record in 27 seasons as a head coach, including seven at Division II Glenville State. But alongside his stark warning of the threats facing Britain and its allies, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin said there would be only a “remote chance” Russia would directly attack or invade the UK if the two countries were at war. The Chief of the Defence Staff laid out the landscape of British defence in a wide-ranging speech, after a minister warned the Army would be wiped out in as little as six months if forced to fight a war on the scale of the Ukraine conflict. The admiral cast doubt on the possibility as he gave a speech at the Royal United Services Institute (Rusi) defence think tank in London. He told the audience Britain needed to be “clear-eyed in our assessment” of the threats it faces, adding: “That includes recognising that there is only a remote chance of a significant direct attack or invasion by Russia on the United Kingdom, and that’s the same for the whole of Nato.” Moscow “knows the response will be overwhelming”, he added, but warned the nuclear deterrent needed to be “kept strong and strengthened”. Sir Tony added: “We are at the dawn of a third nuclear age, which is altogether more complex. It is defined by multiple and concurrent dilemmas, proliferating nuclear and disruptive technologies and the almost total absence of the security architectures that went before.” The first nuclear age was the Cold War, while the second was “governed by disarmament efforts and counter proliferation”, the armed forces chief said. He listed the “wild threats of tactical nuclear use” by Russia, China building up its weapon stocks, Iran’s failure to co-operate with a nuclear deal, and North Korea’s “erratic behaviour” among the threats faced by the West. But Sir Tony said the UK’s nuclear arsenal is “the one part of our inventory of which Russia is most aware and has more impact on (President Vladimir) Putin than anything else”. Successive British governments had invested “substantial sums of money” in renewing nuclear submarines and warheads because of this, he added. The admiral described the deployment of thousands of North Korean soldiers on Ukraine’s border alongside Russian forces as the year’s “most extraordinary development”. He also signalled further deployments were possible, speaking of “tens of thousands more to follow as part of a new security pact with Russia”. Defence minister Alistair Carns earlier said a rate of casualties similar to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine would lead to the army being “expended” within six to 12 months. He said it illustrated the need to “generate depth and mass rapidly in the event of a crisis”. In comments reported by Sky News, Mr Carns, a former Royal Marines colonel, said Russia was suffering losses of around 1,500 soldiers killed or injured a day. “In a war of scale – not a limited intervention, but one similar to Ukraine – our Army for example, on the current casualty rates, would be expended – as part of a broader multinational coalition – in six months to a year,” Mr Carns said in a speech at Rusi. Last week, Trump nominated then-U.S. Representative Gaetz to lead the Department of Justice (DOJ), a selection evoking scrutiny from Democrats and some Republicans . Gaetz, who represented Florida's 1st Congressional District, resigned from his House seat November 13 following his nomination. At the time, Gaetz said he did not want to serve in the same position during the 119th Congress . Gaetz was the subject of a House Ethics Committee investigation over allegations that he "engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use" and accusations of involvement in activities leading to the sex trafficking of a 17-year-old girl. He has denied any wrongdoing. Some also questioned Gaetz's ability to lead the DOJ, citing his limited legal experience and the department's previous investigation of his actions. The agency finished its probe last year and no charges were leveled against Gaetz. Like other recent Cabinet nominees, including Rubio, who was chosen by Trump for secretary of state, Gaetz required Senate approval for attorney general confirmation. On Thursday, Gaetz wrote on X, formerly Twitter , that he met with senators Wednesday and was grateful for "their thoughtful feedback," adding that "while the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition." Faulkner added: "Could it be Matthew Gaetz who then becomes a U.S. senator for an interim in the state of Florida?" Newsweek reached out to DeSantis' press team for comment via email on Thursday. In Florida, along with 44 other states, the governor has the power to appoint someone to a vacant Senate seat as a temporary replacement. Therefore, DeSantis, who endorsed Trump after dropping out of the presidential primaries, could technically appoint Gaetz to fill the seat. Before Gaetz's withdrawal, DeSantis said he has "already received strong interest from several possible candidates," saying that the selection will "likely" be made "by the beginning of January." DeSantis' appointee could serve until a special election is held, likely in 2026, in accordance with state law. Ahead of Gaetz's withdrawal, there were some calls for Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of the president-elect, to fill the potentially vacant Senate seat. Other names floated have included DeSantis' chief of staff, James Uthmeier, and as Florida GOP Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nunez. Gaetz supported Trump over DeSantis in the 2024 presidential campaign, but since the Florida governor dropped out in late January, Gaetz has posted support for the governor. If you're feeling uneasy about the future of Social Security right now, you're not alone. A whopping 87% of U.S. adults say they're concerned about the program, according to a 2024 poll from Gallup, with 43% of that group saying they worry "a great deal" about it. Furthermore, 43% of retirees believe their benefits will be cut in the future, while 47% of nonretired adults worry that Social Security won't be able to pay them a benefit at all once they retire. It's no secret that Social Security is on shaky footing, and the current political climate could create more uncertainty around its future. While the problem may not be as dire as some might believe, there's still good reason to be cautious going forward. Here's what you need to know. The biggest problem plaguing Social Security Social Security is a complex program, and one of the more confusing aspects is the financial state of its trust funds: the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) fund (which covers retirement benefits) and the Disability Insurance (DI) fund (covering disability benefits). Normally, Social Security's income sources -- primarily payroll taxes -- should be enough to fully fund benefits. The cash coming in from taxes is paid out to current beneficiaries, and future generations of workers will fund future retirees' and workers with disabilities' payments. However, in recent years, the program's income hasn't been enough to fully fund benefits. There are a slew of reasons behind this, from older adults living much longer lifespans (collecting more years' worth of benefits than previous generations) to a declining birth rate in the U.S. (with fewer workers paying into the system). Because Social Security's expenses exceed its income, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has been pulling money from the trust funds to bridge the gap. This strategy has avoided benefit cuts in the short term, but both the OASI and DI funds are expected to run out by 2035, according to the SSA Board of Trustees' latest estimates. Can lawmakers solve the problem? The good news is that Social Security isn't going bankrupt, and as long as workers continue paying payroll taxes, there will always be at least some money to pay out in benefits. That said, if nothing happens between now and 2035, the trust funds will eventually run out. Social Security would need to rely solely on its income sources to pay out benefits, and according to the Board of Trustees' projections, that income will only be enough to cover around 83% of future payments. There's also a chance the problem could worsen between now and then. President-elect Donald Trump has already promised to eliminate federal taxes on Social Security benefits, as well as taxes on tips and overtime pay. He has also suggested eliminating federal income tax altogether. While tax cuts could put more money into the pockets of many Americans, it will also slash Social Security's biggest income source. Without taxes, the SSA will not only have to pull more money from the trust funds in the short term (causing them to run out even faster), but once those funds are depleted, there will be even less cash to pay out in benefits (resulting in steeper cuts down the road). It's unclear right now whether these proposed tax cuts will happen, and there are other solutions on the table -- such as increasing taxes for workers earning more than $400,000 per year, raising the full retirement age for retirees, and reducing benefits for high earners. Should you be worried right now? Nobody can say for certain what will happen between now and 2035. It's likely that lawmakers will come up with some sort of solution before widespread benefit cuts become a reality, and any plans to eliminate federal taxes will almost surely face hurdles in Congress. That said, if you're going to be relying on Social Security in retirement, it's wise to start coming up with a backup plan now. That could mean working a few years longer than planned to beef up your savings, or, if you can swing it, continuing to work at least part time in retirement. You could also try picking up a source of passive income to help replace Social Security in your budget. At the very least, staying informed about these issues can help you plan more effectively. Built on proximity, high stakes and decades of tradition, the blood pumps a little harder for players and fans alike this week. With seven at-large bids for the first 12-team College Football Playoff up for grabs, not to mention spots in next week’s conference championship games, some of these games take on even more significance. Rivalry Central will be College Station, Texas. That’s where the “Lone Star Showdown” will be renewed for the first time since 2011 on Saturday night. The winner between No. 3 Texas (No. 3 CFP) and No. 20 Texas A&M (No. 20 CFP) advances to the Southeastern Conference game to play Georgia. Speaking of No. 6 Georgia (No. 7 CFP), the Bulldogs host Georgia Tech on Friday in the game known as “Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate.” The Bulldogs are double-digit favorites — ask Miami how that worked out when it played the Yellow Jackets — and they can save themselves a lot of playoff anxiety by taking care of business here. Michigan, which has taken a step back since winning the 2023 national championship, will have plenty of motivation to play the spoiler’s role in “The Game” at No. 2 Ohio State (No. 2 CFP). The Wolverines have won three straight against the Buckeyes, and an upset Saturday could keep Ohio State out of the Big Ten championship game again and dent its playoff dreams. No. 12 Clemson (No. 12 CFP), still alive for a spot in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game against SMU, hosts No. 16 South Carolina (No. 15 CFP) in the “Palmetto Bowl” on Saturday. The winner keeps its playoff hopes alive. No. 13 Alabama (No. 13 CFP) will have its slim playoff chances squashed if it doesn’t beat Auburn at home in the Iron Bowl. That’s a big deal, and even bigger with the winner going to Atlanta next week to face Georgia in the SEC championship game. The Aggies probably need to win the SEC to make the playoff; the Longhorns can get to the playoff if they lose this game but their seeding could take a hit. Texas has won 10 straight road games and takes a top-20 offense and top-five defense to Kyle Field. Texas A&M has dropped two of its last three, including last week’s four-overtime loss at Auburn. The Longhorns are 5 1/2-point favorites, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. This week’s Heisman Trophy polls indicate a two-man race between Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter and Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty. Ballots go out Monday to the 928 voters. Hunter had eight catches for 125 yards and two touchdowns and made seven tackles and broke up a pass in last week’s loss to Kansas. The Buffaloes play Oklahoma State at home on Friday. Jeanty has put together the nation’s first 2,000-yard rushing season since 2019. He’s gone over 100 yards in all 11 games, including four over 200. The Broncos host Oregon State on Friday. 6 — Tulane’s nation-leading defensive touchdowns, according to Sportradar. 7 — Illinois wins secured in the final minute or overtime since the start of the 2023 season. 9 — Collin Rogers' career field goals of 50-plus yards for SMU, most in the nation since 2022. 14 — Liberty quarterback Kaidon Salter’s career lost fumbles, most in the nation since 2021. 16-2 — UTSA’s record in November games under fifth-year coach Jeff Traylor. Miami (Ohio) (7-4, 6-1 MAC) at Bowling Green (7-4, 6-1), Saturday, noon EST (ESPNU) Miami, the defending Mid-American Conference champion, will go to the league championship game in Detroit next week for the third time in six years if it wins. Bowling Green will play for the MAC title for the first time since 2015 if it wins. The RedHawks enter on a six-game win streak; the Falcons have won five in a row. The spotlight will be on BG tight end Harold Fannin Jr., who could give the MAC an NFL first-round draft pick for the second straight year (Toledo CB Quinyon Mitchell went to Philadelphia as the No. 22 pick in April.) UCF has regressed in Gus Malzahn’s fourth season, and second since it moved from the American Athletic Conference to the Big 12. The Knights are 10-16 since the end of the 2022 regular season and have lost seven of their last eight entering Friday’s home game against Utah.
