And he began his political career in a whites-only Democratic Party. As private citizens, he and Rosalynn supported integration as early as the 1950s and believed it inevitable. Carter refused to join the White Citizens Council in Plains and spoke out in his Baptist church against denying Black people access to worship services. “This is not my house; this is not your house,” he said in a churchwide meeting, reminding fellow parishioners their sanctuary belonged to God. Yet as the appointed chairman of Sumter County schools he never pushed to desegregate, thinking it impractical after the Supreme Court’s 1954 Brown v. Board decision. And while presidential candidate Carter would hail the 1965 Voting Rights Act, signed by fellow Democrat Lyndon Johnson when Carter was a state senator, there is no record of Carter publicly supporting it at the time. Rosalynn Carter, who died on Nov. 19 at the age of 96, was identified by both husband and wife as the “more political” of the pair; she sat in on Cabinet meetings and urged him to postpone certain priorities, like pressing the Senate to relinquish control of the Panama Canal. “Let that go until the second term,” she would sometimes say. The president, recalled her former aide Kathy Cade, retorted that he was “going to do what’s right” even if “it might cut short the time I have.” Rosalynn held firm, Cade said: “She’d remind him you have to win to govern.” Carter also was the first president to appoint multiple women as Cabinet officers. Yet by his own telling, his career sprouted from chauvinism in the Carters' early marriage: He did not consult Rosalynn when deciding to move back to Plains in 1953 or before launching his state Senate bid a decade later. So deep was their trust that when Carter remained tethered to the White House in 1980 as 52 Americans were held hostage in Tehran, it was Rosalynn who campaigned on her husband’s behalf. “I just loved it,” she said, despite the bitterness of defeat. Fair or not, the label of a disastrous presidency had leading Democrats keep their distance, at least publicly, for many years, but Carter managed to remain relevant, writing books and weighing in on societal challenges. He lamented widening wealth gaps and the influence of money in politics. He voted for democratic socialist Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton in 2016, and later declared that America had devolved from fully functioning democracy to “oligarchy.” Yet looking ahead to 2020, with Sanders running again, Carter warned Democrats not to “move to a very liberal program,” lest they help re-elect President Donald Trump. Carter scolded the Republican for his serial lies and threats to democracy, and chided the U.S. establishment for misunderstanding Trump’s populist appeal. He delighted in yearly convocations with Emory University freshmen, often asking them to guess how much he’d raised in his two general election campaigns. “Zero,” he’d gesture with a smile, explaining the public financing system candidates now avoid so they can raise billions. Carter still remained quite practical in partnering with wealthy corporations and foundations to advance Carter Center programs. Carter recognized that economic woes and the Iran crisis doomed his presidency, but offered no apologies for appointing Paul Volcker as the Federal Reserve chairman whose interest rate hikes would not curb inflation until Reagan's presidency. He was proud of getting all the hostages home without starting a shooting war, even though Tehran would not free them until Reagan's Inauguration Day. “Carter didn’t look at it” as a failure, Alter emphasized. “He said, ‘They came home safely.’ And that’s what he wanted.” Well into their 90s, the Carters greeted visitors at Plains’ Maranatha Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School and where he will have his last funeral before being buried on family property alongside Rosalynn . Carter, who made the congregation’s collection plates in his woodworking shop, still garnered headlines there, calling for women’s rights within religious institutions, many of which, he said, “subjugate” women in church and society. Carter was not one to dwell on regrets. “I am at peace with the accomplishments, regret the unrealized goals and utilize my former political position to enhance everything we do,” he wrote around his 90th birthday. The politician who had supposedly hated Washington politics also enjoyed hosting Democratic presidential contenders as public pilgrimages to Plains became advantageous again. Carter sat with Buttigieg for the final time March 1, 2020, hours before the Indiana mayor ended his campaign and endorsed eventual winner Joe Biden. “He asked me how I thought the campaign was going,” Buttigieg said, recalling that Carter flashed his signature grin and nodded along as the young candidate, born a year after Carter left office, “put the best face” on the walloping he endured the day before in South Carolina. A U.S. Army veteran was sentenced on Friday to probation instead of prison for his milestone conviction — and his leadership role — in a violent plot by members of the far-right Oath Keepers extremist group to keep Donald Trump in the White House after he lost the 2020 presidential election. Joshua James was the first person charged in the U.S. Capitol riot to plead guilty to seditious conspiracy — the most serious crime arising from the Jan. 6, 2021, attack by a mob of Trump supporters. James cooperated with the Justice Department’s investigation but didn’t testify at any of the trials for other Oath Keepers members, including the anti-government group’s founder and top leader, Stewart Rhodes . James was the ninth and final Oath Keepers defendant to be sentenced after cooperating with prosecutors. James, 37, of Arab, Alabama, expressed remorse before U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta sentenced him to three years of probation, including six months in a “residential re-entry center” and six months of home detention. James said he knows that his actions put police officers in danger on Jan. 6. “That’s not who I am,” he said. “I help people in danger.” In sparing James from a prison sentence, Mehta said he wanted to ensure that the married father of three children could continue trying to “put his life together.” “Because if he can do that, I think the rest of us can, too,” the judge added. President-elect Donald Trump repeatedly has vowed to pardon Capitol rioters. At a sentencing on Wednesday for another cooperating Oath Keeper defendant, Mehta said it would be “frightening” if Rhodes is pardoned. On Friday, the judge reflected on how other judges presiding over Jan. 6 cases have strived “to be fair and to do justice.” “We haven’t been doing politics here. Not at all,” he said. The judge described James as a “true American hero” for his military service and praised him for having the courage to admit his guilt and cooperate with the government. “It was about making amends for your actions and deciding to put your country back where it belonged,” Mehta said. Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy Edwards said James’ sentencing can help ensure that the Jan. 6 attack is “cemented in our long-term national memory.” “That is part of what we’re doing here today,” the prosecutor added. James was the first criminal defendant in over 60 years to enter a pretrial agreement with prosecutors to plead guilty to seditious conspiracy, according to his attorneys. The defense lawyers said James provided “pivotal” information about the Oath Keepers in his debriefs with investigators and his grand jury testimony. A jury convicted Rhodes of seditious conspiracy for a plot to use force to stop the peaceful transfer of power from Trump to President Joe Biden after the 2020 election. In May 2023, Mehta sentenced Rhodes to 18 years in prison. Prosecutors recommended two years of prison for James, arguing that he deserves credit for his cooperation. They said James helped authorities understand Rhodes’ state of mind around Jan. 6 and how he could inspire his followers to join the plot. The other cooperating Oath Keepers defendants also avoided prison sentences. “James stands apart from these other cooperating defendants in part because of his leadership role in the conspiracy and significant impact he had on other individuals who acted at his instruction,” prosecutors wrote . James was a regional leader for the Oath Keepers in Alabama and was in direct contact with Rhodes before the Jan. 6 riot. James and other Oath Keepers stored firearms in hotels on the outskirts of Washington, D.C., for a “quick reaction force” to possibly use, but they never deployed the guns. As they approached the Capitol on Jan. 6, James and other Oath Keepers marched in a military-style “stack” formation. James helped lead other group members into the building through the East Rotunda doors, prosecutors said. Inside the Capitol, James approached a police officer, grabbed his vest and pulled him toward the mob as he yelled, “Get out of my Capitol!” according to prosecutors. After police pushed James out of the building, he reunited with Rhodes and other Oath Keepers. Two days later, James met Rhodes at a restaurant in Alabama. “Rhodes expressed gratitude for James’s actions and told James to alter his physical appearance to conceal his identity,” prosecutors wrote. James was 18 when he enlisted in the Army. He was 19 in 2007 when he was wounded in a car bombing that took down part of a highway bridge in Iraq. “Over the next two years, his body slowly healed, but his career in the Army came to a disappointingly abrupt end,” his attorneys wrote. “His sense of purpose and self-worth were replaced by feelings of guilt for not finishing his deployment and regret over a military career cut short.” James, a welder, lost his military benefits after his conviction, costing him thousands of dollars per month in disability retirement payments.MORGANTOWN — Rich Rodriguez was standing at the podium for no more than five seconds Friday. Five seconds isn’t long enough to warm up anything in a microwave. It’s not long enough to change your shoes or wash your hands. It was more than enough time for the man decked out in a ball cap and a West Virginia University coat to let the hundreds inside the Coliseum know how he truly felt about WVU hiring Rodriguez for a second time to be its head football coach. “Go back to Michigan,” the man yelled again, over and over until he began to get pelted by trash and was finally escorted out of the arena by police. Rodriguez waited for the man’s exit before trying to mask the moment with a funny. “Any other Pitt fans can leave the building,” he said, bringing with it a loud ovation and a familiar chant. Anything else that happened at Rodriguez’s introductory press conference paled in comparison. For starters, it was closer to a frat party than any kind of press conference, not that most people care about that kind of stuff, so we’ll leave that right there. It all ended with both Rodriguez and the man who hired him — WVU athletic director Wren Baker — darting off the stage and rushing off behind the big blue curtain heading off for another interview with Pat McAfee. That was, at the very least, somewhat symbolic. It was 17 years ago when Rodriguez did the same thing to WVU, rushing off under the cover of darkness to go to Michigan. Rodriguez did it then by himself, with his discontent with the former WVU athletic administration well known. At least this time he was neck-and-neck with the top guy in WVU’s athletic administration, a sign of unity of sorts. What else happened Friday? Well, these are simply my observations. “This is really surreal,” Rodriguez said. “I never should have left.” By veteran sports writer Bob Hertzel’s count, Rodriguez used the word “mistake” seven times, referencing his departure from WVU in 2007. Most people apologize when admitting to a mistake. Not Rodriguez. The word “sorry” or “I wish it never happened” was never mentioned once. Now, privately, maybe Rodriguez has said it a hundred times, whether it was to a big-money donor, a close confidant or even to Baker during the interview process. But he had a major opportunity to say it to the fans Friday, the ones around the state, around the country, there in the Coliseum or even to that man who was yelling for him to go back to Michigan. It was an opportunity missed. “I understand there are fans who are upset,” Rodriguez said. “At least they care, right? I made a mistake, but I promise — not just to the folks who are upset — but to everybody here and everyone who have been very supportive, I will earn your support. We will earn your support and your trust back.” The thought is nice. Rodriguez’s action from this day forward will tell the real story. There is another side to the story, which is to say there were literally a few thousand in attendance who couldn’t be happier at the site of Rodriguez back at WVU. Not all of them were rich donors, which is sort of an angle that’s out there with Rod’s return, in that money most definitely talked in this instance. Most of them were just regular Joes, yearning for WVU to once again be respected nationally, as the Mountaineers were in Rodriguez’s first term. True, a portion of those happy fans were WVU students who were still likely in diapers in 2007. Others hooted and hollered every time Rodriguez made a point about coming back home. They sang “Take Me Home Country Roads” in unison. There is a large part of the fan base that is very much behind this hire. Yet, there is no one man or woman who can possibly have the entire pulse of the WVU fan base under their thumb, and so there is no way to measure the level of hurt or disappointment that is still felt by some toward Rodriguez. What we do know is the fan base — to some degree — was already divided before Rodriguez was even interviewed for the job. “Fire Neal Brown” and “Keep Neal Brown” billboards were seen all across town. Many loved the former coach for the integrity he brought to the program. Many hated Brown for not winning. By hiring the most controversial former WVU coach not named Bob Huggins to come back to be your football coach, how in the world is WVU’s fan base ever going to be united again? “Here’s what I know about West Virginia,” Baker said. “I’ve heard from both sides. Coach and I talked about this and he knows that there’s some people who have hard feelings from 17 years ago. West Virginians love to see West Virginians do well. West Virginians love to see this program do well and represent the state. “When I sat with him, no other candidate had the kind of passion for this state, this community, this university and this football program the way that he did. I’m excited that he’s here and we’re going to rally the fan base and we’re going to win games and there won’t be any kind of division. Everyone will be rooting for the Mountaineers.” In all sincerity, because Baker is very much an honorable man, WVU’s athletic director should be praying heavily tonight that’s the case. Because time, as the saying goes, did not heal all wounds where it concerns Rodriguez. Seventeen years may have healed some, but it was obvious from that one’s man ranting not all wounds were healed. Maybe winning will do so, as Baker suggested, which puts the pressure directly onto Rodriguez for a quick impact. If not, the next time Rodriguez conducts a frat party, er, press conference, there’s no telling how many people may have to be escorted out by the police.

It’s been over a week since a video showed Rivers United officials being assaulted during their visit to Nasarawa United for an NPFL match-day 18 game on Sunday, December 22, and it just begins to seem like something really happened at the Lafia City Stadium. The NPFL board called for an inquest into the matter on Saturday, December 28 – six days after the incident – and that further provoked the thought of enabling the barbarism on display in the said video, more than it suggested that the league body needed time to investigate or listen to both parties. In the video that was circulated by the former media officer of Rivers United and now Special Assistant to the Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Sammy Wejinya – who was the victim – he was rounded by several persons within the VIP stand of the stadium and visibly keeping his calm even while looking irritated until he was wrestled to the ground in the chaotic atmosphere. As kicks and blows flew at the stand, chairs were also pelted at the spot where Wejinya was standing and it appeared another person was getting hits from some irate fans in front of him. In between the two spots was the Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Chris Green, who was also confused as he turned around, not knowing whom to pacify or save before eventually wriggling out of the chaotic scene. Amid the pandemonium, there were motionless individuals within the VIP stand while some made frantic efforts to restrain some of the irate fans. What followed was a chronicle of woes by Wejinya, which was swiftly countered by Nasarawa United. According to Wejinya, that chaos began when he reacted to a missed chance by their team, Rivers United in the closing stages of the game – a gesture which presumably didn’t go down well with the hosts with the score locked at 1-1. “As I screamed and put my hands on my head at that missed opportunity by Rivers United, several Nasarawa United fans who were beside and behind me at the VIP stand of the stadium immediately asked me to shut my mouth. I was taken aback and moments later, these irate fans descended on me and gave me the beating of my life,” Wejinya wrote. “At that moment, I thought about my wife and two young daughters. “My life flashed before my eyes and I wondered if coming to the stadium to watch a football club I love (Rivers United FC) was worth my life. It was a sorry and scary sight. I pleaded with the fans and begged for my life but they wouldn’t listen.” The hosts had a response for every line in Wejinya’s statement, describing the incident as a “minor altercation.” “Our fans had been exemplary in their behaviour throughout the game, cheering and applauding our team all along,” Nasarawa United said in a statement sent to The PUNCH by the club’s media officer, Eche Amos. “Unfortunately, a minor altercation occurred between Sammy Wejinya who was seated in the midst of the stronghold of the local fans, as he was heard loudly cheering his side. Upon noticing the situation, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Nasarawa State, and other key stakeholders, including the stadium security personnel, swiftly waded in to rescue the situation as normalcy eventually returned and Sammy Wejinya and the aforementioned members of Rivers State’s delegation were escorted out of the stadium,” the statement read in part. However, in a chat with The PUNCH, Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Chris Green, noted that the presence of Nasarawa State officials could not stop the fans from descending on Wejinya, the Rivers United general manager Okey Kpalukwu and himself until their attached security aides came to their rescue. “Help did not come from anywhere. The only thing that gave us respite was our security men that we normally travelled with. They shot teargas and a few of them scampered, that was when we were able to carry Sammy out of the place. We didn’t eventually know when the match ended,” Green told The PUNCH. “For us, we were treated for minor injuries but Sammy was admitted to our medical facility and had to go for further tests for his eyes and others. My driver also left with swollen hands because he was trying to pick up Sammy’s phone when it fell.” Regardless of who tried to portray their stories in the proper light between both parties, the scene in that video was barbaric and should no longer have a place in popular stands, let alone a VIP stand. Particularly, it raises questions about security and access to certain areas within the stadium. “I’m still in pains,” Wejinya told The PUNCH. “I have pains in my ribs and I can’t stretch or turn properly. Over 20 persons pounced on me. This happened in broad daylight and they are saying this is a slight disturbance. I could have been killed.” Although Nasarawa United said they provided 70 security personnel including 30 police officers, the ones on the sidelines were rather looking helpless while havoc was being wreaked in the VIP stand and objects were thrown onto the pitch as well. Also, match officials, Musibaudeen Ibrahim (referee), Ikenna Okerulu (first assistant referee) and Godfrey Mamman (match commissioner) are to appear in person to give an account of the events of the match. The match officials are expected to provide further clarification on their reports, and actions taken during the match.” Chief Operating Officer of the NPFL, Davison Owumi, further told The PUNCH that the procedure was delayed by the incoherence of reports on the incident. “We don’t take our verdicts from social media. We take our verdicts from the match officials, including the referee and match commissioner. If need be, we will get more evidence from other sources until we get an assemblage of the full reports. Since we have conflicting reports, we need to have the inquest,” Owumi said. “Once there is a delay in getting the necessary reports, we can’t just go out for the sake of being timely.” Without playing down the need for fairness on the part of the league body, condemning the act that was displayed in the video would have done more good than the silence before the inquest. Thankfully, there was no casualty but everything in the video, even without showing the state of the victims, suggested it could have been worse. Nasarawa United aren’t strangers to breaches of NPFL rules with one of their players and media director getting the stick under the defunct League Management Company in 2019 over an attack on a referee. But in cases like this and many others that have happened in the past, how much succour can a three-point deduction from the erring team or financial compensation to the victims provide, if a life was lost? That is even if the fines and compensations were dutifully enforced. For instance, in 2022, a journalist Tobi Adepoju was beaten in Ibadan after a southwest derby game between 3SC and Remo Stars and the media officer of 3SC, Tosin Omojola, said audaciously on live radio that there would have been no repercussions if Adepoju was killed in the incident. It’s almost certain that Nasarawa United would be punished, but it remains to be seen how grave it would be. There are feelers that Rivers United fans might be gunning for a revenge in the reverse fixture against the Lafia-based side but Green says the club will do whatever it takes to prevent their fans from joining issues with any opponents while they await the verdict of the league body. “We try not to allow these things to get here (Port Harcourt). Our supporters were there and they tried to come to our rescue. Now you can imagine the orientation they will have.
