After fighting wars on multiple fronts for months, Israel is now concerned that unrest in Syria could spill over into its territory. Israel also views the end of the Assad regime as a chance to disrupt Iran's ability to smuggle weapons through Syria to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. The Israeli military over the weekend began seizing control of a demilitarised buffer zone in Syria created as part of a 1974 ceasefire between the countries. It said the move was temporary and meant to secure its border. But the incursion sparked condemnation, with critics accusing Israel of violating the ceasefire and possibly exploiting the chaos in Syria for a land grab. Israel still controls the Golan Heights that it captured from Syria during the 1967 Mideast war and later annexed — a move not recognized by most of the international community. Here's a look at recent developments along the Syrian frontier. Where are the Israeli troops? Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israeli forces were moving to control a roughly 400-square-kilometer (155-square-mile) demilitarized buffer zone in Syrian territory. The official noted that in 2014, UN peacekeepers fled the buffer zone after al-Qaida-linked Syrian rebels attacked their encampments. The indictment alleges that Cole abused his position as a federal law enforcement agent to obtain and sell drugs for profit. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Cole took drugs that had been seized as evidence, telling colleagues he was using them for legitimate investigations, and instead sold them to a confidential informant who resold the drugs for profit on the streets of Utah, according to the indictment. The informant, who has a lengthy criminal history, had been recruited by federal agents to work for them upon his release from prison. But in addition to conducting controlled buys from suspected drug dealers as directed by investigators, the informant said he was compelled by Cole and another agent to also engage in illegal sales. Wike, who highlighted the importance of collaboration among the judiciary, executive and legislative arms of the government, spoke on Friday at the flagging off of the design, construction, and furnishing of the office annexe of the Body of Benchers of Nigeria in Abuja. The former Rivers State helmsman pointed out that provision has already been made in the supplementary budget of the FCT for the construction of the Body of Benchers office complex. The minister assured of the availability of funds for the project and thanked President Tinubu for his unwavering support for the FCT Administration. Responding to a request to provide a fire service station within the Body of Benchers complex, the Minister also assured that the project would be included in the FCT’s 2025 budget. He said: “You can take it for granted; by 2025, we are going to establish a fire service station within this complex. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer wants to turn the page on criticism of his government. LONDON - Prime Minister Keir Starmer will set out plans on Dec 5 to deliver on his priorities to raise living standards and rebuild Britain in a speech he hopes will draw a line under what even some of his supporters say has been a bumpy start to government. Five months since his Labour Party swept back to power with a landslide win , Mr Starmer wants to turn the page on criticism of his government on everything from its use of campaign donations to a tax-raising budget which prompted an outcry from businesses and farmers. He will use the speech on Dec 5 to plot out when Britain can expect to start seeing progress his government has promised in a range of areas, including hospital backlogs, increasing police numbers, improving education and securing home-grown energy. Called the government’s ‘plan for change’, he is expected to set out a reform programme for Britain’s overly stretched public services to try to restore trust in politics, eroded by years of chaos and scandal under the Conservatives and further deepened by Labour’s missteps in its first few months in power. “My government was elected to deliver change, and today marks the next step. People are tired of being promised the world, but short-term sticking plaster politics letting them down,” Mr Starmer will say, according to excerpts of his speech provided by his office. “My mission-led government will deliver.” Labour campaigned before the July 4 election on five missions - boosting economic growth, accelerating steps towards reaching net zero, reducing waiting times in the state-run health service, tackling crime and improving education.
