NEW SURVEY FINDS LOCAL VINEYARD EMPLOYEES PRIORITIZING NEW SKILLS, TECHNOLOGIES, AND ESTABLISHING ROOTSIRVING, Texas (AP) — A rape allegation against rapper Jay-Z, whose company Roc Nation has produced some of the NFL's entertainment presentations including the Super Bowl halftime show, won’t impact the league's relationship with the music mogul. “We’re aware of the civil allegations and Jay-Z’s really strong response to that," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday after the conclusion of the league's winter meetings. "We know the litigation is happening now. From our standpoint, our relationship is not changing with them, including our preparations for the next Super Bowl.” A woman who previously sued Sean “Diddy” Combs, alleging she was raped at an awards show after-party in 2000 when she was 13 years old, amended the lawsuit Sunday to include a new allegation that Jay-Z was also at the party and participated in the sexual assault. Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, said the rape allegation made against him is part of an extortion attempt . The 24-time Grammy Award winner called the allegations “idiotic” and “heinous in nature” in a statement released by Roc Nation, one of his companies. The NFL teamed up with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation in 2019 for events and social activism. The league and the entertainment company extended their partnership a few months ago. Kendrick Lamar will perform the Super Bowl halftime show at The Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on Feb. 9. Roc Nation and Emmy-winning producer Jesse Collins will serve as co-executive producers of the halftime show. Beyonce, who is married to Jay-Z, will perform at halftime of the Baltimore Ravens-Houston Texans game on Christmas. “I think they’re getting incredibly comfortable with not just with the Super Bowl but other events they’ve advised us on and helped us with,” Goodell said. “They’ve been a big help in the social justice area to us on many occasions. They’ve been great partners.” AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl Copyright 2024 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Missing dog returned to family home and rang the doorbell WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Athena, a 4-year-old German Shepherd and Husky mix, escaped her home in Green Cove Springs, Florida, on Dec. 15, prompting a search among the community and nearby towns for her. Yet on Christmas Eve, Athena appeared at the family's front door ringing on their doorbell — ending a search after more than a week. Her owner, Brooke Comer, said Athena's escape brought multiple communities in her town and neighboring towns to search for her dog, and that Athena's escape was about a 20-mile roundtrip near the train tracks. (AP) — Road crews are repairing Interstate 80 in northern New Jersey after a sinkhole from an abandoned mine shut down the eastbound lanes. The state’s transportation department says it remains unknown when those lanes will reopen. The hole opened up along the highway’s right shoulder Thursday morning, and the guardrail was still hanging suspended across the gaping 40-foot-wide hole on Friday. Drivers are currently having to detour near Wharton, about 40 miles west of New York City. The New Jersey Department of Transportation said crews will work around the clock to the repair the roadway. Customs agents seize 22,000 fake Pennsylvania vehicle inspection stickers shipped from Israel HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency says it seized more than 20,000 counterfeit Pennsylvania vehicle inspection stickers that were shipped from Israel to an address in Philadelphia. The agency said that customs officers found the stickers in two different shipments that arrived on different days, Nov. 26 and Dec. 9. The agency didn't say in a Thursday statement who sent the stickers, who was to receive them and what purpose the stickers were going to serve. The agency said it made no arrests. Pennsylvania requires that motor vehicles be inspected annually to ensure they meet minimum mechanical, safety and emissions standards. Wildwoods Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Duluth said in a Facebook post Thursday that the snowy owl rescued by Annabell Whelan had internal injuries, a broken wing and a broken leg, and had to be euthanized. The great gray owl also rescued by Whelan suffered broken bones and large soft tissue wounds. Wildwoods says the injuries are severe and veterinarians are doing everything they can to “give the bird a chance at recovery.” Whelan happened to find both injured owls at different places Monday. 2 Florida tourist spots halt drones in shows following a separate accident that injured a boy ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A theme park resort and a huge hotel in central Florida either have stopped using drones or canceled their drone-based shows after several drones collided and fell from the sky during a separate holiday celebration in downtown Orlando. The accident last weekend injured a boy who required surgery. Universal Orlando said this week that it was pausing the drone component of its “CineSational: A Symphonic Spectacular” show, while Orlando World Center Marriott posted that it was canceling its scheduled drone shows during the holiday week. The halt in using drones follows last Saturday’s accident at a holiday show at Lake Eola Park in downtown Orlando. NASA's Parker Solar Probe survives close brush with the sun's scorching surface NEW YORK (AP) — NASA has confirmed that a spacecraft has made the closest approach to the sun. Earlier this week, the Parker Solar Probe passed within a mere 3.8 million miles of the sun. Space agency officials received an all-clear message Thursday night confirming Parker survived the journey. The spacecraft was launched in 2018 to get a close-up look at the sun. It'll continue circling the sun at this distance until at least September. Scientists hope to better understand what drives the solar wind and why the sun's outer atmosphere iis so much hotter than its surface. 'Morrison Hotel' made famous by The Doors goes up in flames in LA The former Morrison Hotel, which was famously on the cover of a 1970 album by The Doors, has been significantly damaged by a fire in downtown Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Fire Department says the four-story building burned for nearly two hours Thursday. More than 100 firefighters helped bring the fire under control. The building had been vacant for more than a decade but several people who were inside at the time escaped without injuries. The Morrison Hotel was featured on the album’s cover that showed legendary frontman Jim Morrison in the middle. That album was viewed as a comeback for The Doors. Wild return to the ice rested and, they hope, a little healthierAmid busy traffic one morning in September, a woman who suffered a cardiac arrest was being taken by an ambulance to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) in Jurong East. The woman in her 50s had fainted at the void deck of a Housing Board block in Jurong West Street 42. The ambulance took six minutes to reach the hospital. During that time, a team of Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) paramedics, including Sergeant 3 (SGT3) Sharon Tan Yan An, treated the unconscious woman on board the vehicle. Arriving at the hospital, the woman’s heart began to pump again, and she was handed over to hospital staff to be looked after. The ambulance was able to reach the hospital faster due to a new system that gives SCDF’s emergency ambulances priority at certain traffic lights. One firefighter taken to hospital after Fishery Port Road fire Speaking to the media on Nov 22 at Jurong Fire Station where she is based, SGT3 Tan, 26, said: “Every second matters for such cases, especially when it involves an organ like the heart.” SGT3 Tan, who has been with SCDF for five years, added: “The faster we can reach (the hospital), the faster the patient can get care.” Announced at SCDF’s Workplan Seminar in July, the traffic priority system allows ambulances to have a “green light” path to the hospital and avoid getting stuck in traffic at junctions near hospitals or having to run red lights. The first phase of the system was implemented on July 15 and involved two ambulances operating from Jurong Fire Station and one from Bukit Batok Fire Station, and four junctions in the vicinity of NTFGH. Data recorded in these areas over the next three months showed a total of 76 activations for life-threatening medical emergencies for the three ambulances across three routes near the hospital. SCDF said the results indicated an average of 1min 40sec saved per trip. The system was developed by SCDF, the Home Team Science and Technology Agency, and the Land Transport Authority. It uses an electronic transponder in an ambulance to activate priority passage at designated traffic junctions near hospitals. At these junctions, sensors are linked to traffic light controllers, which trigger traffic lights in favour of an approaching ambulance. The sensors detect the in-vehicle transponder through radio waves and are activated as the ambulance approaches within 200m of the junction. Normal traffic operations resume after the ambulance crosses the junction. The next phase will be completed by the second quarter of 2025. It entails the installation of transponders in all other SCDF ambulances and the extension of the system’s coverage to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, Changi General Hospital and National University Hospital. The system is scheduled to be fully rolled out by 2026 and will involve a total of 47 junctions serving nine public hospitals. “These time savings facilitated the earlier arrival and more timely treatment of patients at hospital emergency departments,” SCDF added. Colonel Hong Dehan, SCDF’s chief medical officer, said the implementation of the first phase of the traffic priority system has shown encouraging results, noting that the time saved is particularly important for cases of cardiac arrest, trauma or stroke. SGT3 Nur Ain Abdul Karim, 32, another paramedic from Jurong Fire Station, recounted an incident in July where she attended to a man who was bleeding from an old wound on his back. The man, in his 50s, agreed to go to the hospital, but started to lose consciousness when he headed to the toilet at the unit. He also began breathing abnormally and started having a seizure. Though he regained consciousness, he was in a confused state. He was taken to NTFGH in six minutes via a route with the traffic priority system. SGT3 Ain, who has been with SCDF for 61⁄2 years, said this was a life-threatening emergency, with the paramedics unaware of how much blood the man had lost prior to their arrival. With several unknowns, including how the injury was sustained, there was a need for the patient to be taken to the hospital as soon as possible for assessment and treatment, she said. “The faster we take the patient to the hospital, the faster they can intervene,” she added.Donald Trump will ring the New York Stock Exchange bell as he's named Time's Person of the YearOne of the greatest aspects of Linux is how efficient it is at using your system’s resources. However, there are instances when you might tax your Linux system, such as when running virtual machines, playing video games, or editing 4K video. In these situations, you may want to keep an eye on your system to make sure its components aren’t getting too hot. Here are some of the best system monitors you can use to check your system resources in Linux. Mission Center is a beautiful system monitor that provides a deep overview of your Linux machine. It comes with features that you’d expect out of a monitor app such as the ability to check the CPU load, memory usage, and overall network traffic. What sets Mission Center apart is the level of detail that it reports to the user. For instance, it can show you the load on the different CPU cores on your system and scale its graphs based on that data. This makes it incredibly attractive to users that want a monitor that strikes the balance between aesthetics and functionality. Aside from that, the developers of Mission Center designed the program to be “ Flatpak first.” This means that you can easily install the app on any Linux distro without worrying about dependencies and package conflicts. Bottom is a powerful terminal-based system monitor that focuses on flexibility and compatibility. Similar to htop and gtop, Bottom provides a wealth of features such as the ability to read system stats as well as display and manage system processes. One of the biggest features of Bottom is its highly modular and customizable interface. By default, the program treats every “monitor” as a widget that you can tweak and customize. This allows you to fine tune your setup depending on the machine and load that you’re monitoring. Lastly, the developers of Bottom built the program to run on all major desktop platforms. This means that you don’t need to learn a new program whenever you switch OSes. As someone who often distro hops, Bottom is a handy app that I keep on my toolbox whenever I need to check if my system is working well. Glances is another terminal-based system monitoring tool for Linux that provides a comprehensive overview of your computer. It achieves this by fetching data on almost every aspect of the machine. This includes the usual CPU and RAM usage graphs along with more specific points such as component temperatures, fan speed, and active processes. Unlike Mission Center, Glances doesn’t mask its sensor data with fancy UI and UX. While this makes the program trickier for beginners, advanced users might find Glances capable enough to handle complex monitoring workloads. For instance, you can even configure Glances to monitor Docker containers currently running on the system. To add to that, the developers of Glances designed a server daemon that allows you to view the current state of your system remotely. This could either be through a Web interface or an SSH session. Further, Glances also supports exporting its data to CSV, making it easier to keep track of your computer’s performance over time. On a side note: looking to test the limits of your computer? Learn why my colleague uses OCCT to stress test his CPU and GPU . Cockpit is more than a system monitor for Linux. It’s a software platform that can control your machine straight from a web browser . It comes with a solid set of diagnostics tools, making it good for admins looking to level up their server management UI and UX. Cockpit stands out as a tool that can correlate resource use to actual system events and processes. This gives you a more holistic overview, allowing you to make informed decisions on running your system. Having used Cockpit for two years, I can attest to how this software transformed how I manage my servers. Cockpit also has a rich ecosystem of modules that extend the basic functions of the program. For instance, you can install both libvirtd and cockpit-machines to manage VMs directly through your browser. Htop is a minimalist terminal-based system monitor for Linux focusing on process management. Inspired by top , htop distinguishes itself by giving users a more intuitive and easy-to-use interface for browsing and controlling processes. While htop doesn’t have a “killer feature,” it makes up for it by providing a rock-solid core experience. It comes with a bar graph showing resource usage and a searchable process list, and it can send signal interrupts to your programs. In my experience, htop can cover all the basic tasks that you might need out of a system monitor.
