Arsenal closed the gap to league leaders Liverpool to seven points and consigned Ruben Amorim to a first defeat as Manchester United manager with a 2-0 win over the Portuguese’s side in north London. Two set-piece goals in the second half were the difference, Jurrien Timber flicking home Declan Rice’s corner to break the deadlock and William Saliba bundling over the line after Thomas Partey headed another corner back across a packed six-yard box. Amorim’s United went close through Matthijs de Ligt’s header but struggled to make inroads against an Arsenal defence which was missing both Gabriel and Riccardo Calafiori. Here are three talking points from the match... Arsenal’s set-pieces the difference yet again “Set piece again, ole ole,” was the unusual chant around the Emirates during yet another big occasion when Arsenal’s prowess from dead-balls was the difference. Even without Gabriel, who has comfortably been their biggest threat from set-pieces this season, United simply could not cope with the hosts' quality from corners. Arsenal's new routine of grouping players at either post was hugely effective, with Timber’s opener a carbon copy of Gabriel’s goal which broke the deadlock in the 5-2 win over West Ham at the weekend. Saliba knew relatively little about his goal after Partey headed Bukayo Saka's corner back across the box, but it was a result of the panic Arsenal inspired in the United box from every dead ball. Mikel Arteta ’s side have now scored 22 goals from set pieces since the start of last season, and Partey and Mikel Merino squandered fine chances to add to that tally here. Throughout the first half, Arsenal struggled to establish their rhythm against a well-organised opponent, but Arteta’s side always have a way of scoring in cagey games. Arsenal increasingly feel in a league of their own from dead-balls in the Premier League this season, giving them an aura that led to jitters in the United box every time either Saka or Rice stood over the ball in the corner. Credit must go, again, to both Arteta and his set-piece coach Nicolas Jover for setting the standard for the rest of the league to try to match. With the top-flight more compact than ever, particularly after Liverpool dropped points, Arsenal’s quality from dead balls could prove decisive this season. Amorim’s organised United show promise United are too big a club to take much solace from a two-goal defeat but there were some reasons for encouragement for the new head coach. United struggled with Arsenal’s intensity after the break, and were fortunate not to concede further goals, but Amorim could still point to set-pieces as the only difference between the two sides in the end. In the first half, United frustrated Arsenal with an disciplined display, Amorim setting up with a back five out of possession and four midfielders who pressed smartly and held their positions. Rasmus Hojlund worked hard as an outlet up top, occasionally threatening to get in behind. United were canny at slowing the game down, fouling and being fouled while taking their time to build out from the back. It was not exactly pretty but it was a start, and a clear improvement of Erik ten Hag’s infamous ‘doughnut’ that was so easy for a side like Arsenal to play through. If it were not for a brilliant David Raya save to claw out De Ligt’s header from Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick at 1-0, United may have snatched a leveller and made more of a fist of the second half. Arsenal showed Amorim and his players the levels they must reach, but United at least feel like a club with a solid base to build from once again. Arsenal hitting their stride Arsenal’s wobble in late October and November now feels like a distant memory another impressive result, which made it four wins on the bounce since the November international break. Arteta’s side are building momentum at the right time going into the hectic festive period, and they increasingly feel like the hard-to-beat side of the second half of last season again. They found a new level in the second half here, with Rice, Saliba, Timber and Jakub Kiwior, who was impressive in standing in for Gabriel, helping to overpower the visitors. Arteta can take particular pride that his side ground out a big result without Calafiori and Gabriel, as Kiwior and Oleksandr Zinchenko deputised well. The question is whether Arsenal will have enough to reel in Liverpool but the Reds’ 3-3 draw at Newcastle should give the Gunners some hope, and ensured the gap is a little narrower going into their derby against Fulham at the weekend.Australia is banning social media for people under 16. Could this work elsewhere — or even there?

Scott Bessent a credible, safe pick for Treasury: expertsBritain's Pulling wins all-female F1 Academy titleEvery Black Friday, there’s a number of viral products that everyone has on their Christmas wish list, and we don’t expect this year to be any different. However, not all of these popular items are going to stay in stock, and we have some insight on the ones that won’t. Black Friday is big business, and last year shoppers spent $222.1 billion during the entire holiday shopping season, according to Queue-it. Sales on Black Friday reached $16.4 billion (online and in stores), and this was a 9% increase from the year before. While it comes as no surprise that electronics are the most sought-after products of the holiday season, Queue-it said this accounts for the majority of holiday sales, jumping to $50.8 billion in 2023. Apparel, furniture, groceries and toys are the other hot sellers of Black Friday. Together, these five categories accounted for 65% of sales during the holidays last year and is only expected to grow in 2024. While many items that sell out over Black Friday are driven by a good deal, we also know that a hot product is just that — a gift that most people want to open on Christmas Day. So, here are our picks for the top 10 hot-ticket items that could sell out over Black Friday. Samsung 98-inch QLED TV The holidays are ripe for TV deals, and we expect shoppers to buy a ton of them in 2024, especially at Walmart. Consumers are trending toward bigger TVs and the super low-price deals over Black Friday force many models to sell out. This is especially true of popular models from Samsung, Hisense, LG and more favorites. Apple Watch Series 9 Apple's smartwatches are a top pick among Apple fans. We’ve seen prices on the Apple Watch continue to trend downward, which was only spurred by the release of the new Apple Watch 10 in September. This pushed down prices on earlier models, with the best deals coming on the Apple Watch SE and Apple Watch 9. For Black Friday, we think the prices will drop even lower and sell out due to high demand. Beats Solo3 Wireless headphones are one of the most popular products of 2024, and Beats are one of the top brands. We’re already seeing big markdowns on Beats Wireless Headphones, and we expect these price drops to continue into Black Friday. The Beats Solo3 is likely to be on sale for even cheaper than we’ve already seen, and we think they will sell out for Black Friday, with the possibility of other popular Beats headphones joining them. Apple AirPods (3rd gen) If you haven’t picked up a pair of Apple AirPods yet, this could be your year to do it. With Apple launching a fourth generation of AirPods earlier this year, the price on prevvious models are creeping lower. We think over Black Friday they’ll be at their cheapest price ever, with the AirPods (3rd Gen) likely to sell out. JBL Flip 6 Bluetooth speakers are a must-have for many this year, and with the big sound that comes from JBL’s speakers, it’s easy to see why they might sell out for Black Friday. These popular speakers come in a variety of portable sizes and waterproof designs. We expect big deals on JBL’s top-rated Clip 5 and Flip 6 Bluetooth speaker models. Apple iPad (10th Gen) One of Apple’s most sought-after products of the year was the iPad, and we saw the 9th Gen and 10th Gen models drop to their lowest prices ever. We think this year will bring some iPad bliss with even better discounts, but these deals will disappear just as fast as they arrive. We think that mega discounts on the iPad (9th Gen) and iPad (10th Gen) could cause sell outs, especially on Amazon. Dyson Airwrap The Dyson Airwrap just might be the top product of Black Friday, as this is one of the rare times there’s a discount on the beloved hair styling tool. At $600, the Airwrap carries a hefty price tag, so any discount presented is a welcome surprise. But as we’ve seen in the past, any Black Friday deal on the Dyson Airwrap causes a crush of interest that’s followed by a sell out. Ugg Tasman slippers If you’ve tried to scoop up the UGG Tasman Slippers in previous years, you already know they never stay in stock for long. As the “it” slipper of the holiday season, UGG’s Tasman sells out multiple times over the holidays, even without a discount offered. We think that this year will be similar, with popular sizes and colors of the Tasman Slipper snatched up fast over Black Friday. Bissell Little Green The Bissell Little Green carpet cleaner is a popular home product that just can’t seem to stay in stock. With prices falling under $90, this mighty machine can be a blessing for pet owners and parents, as its compact size makes it easy to store and use when needed. We’ve seen the Little Green Machine sell out before, and we’d be surprised if it didn’t do it again over Black Friday. Furby Galaxy Edition We’d be remiss if we didn’t include a top toy that we think will be hard to find and gift this year. Our pick is the Furby Galaxy Edition. This glow-in-the-dark Furby is based on the original Furby from the late ’90s with even more features, interactive modes and more fun. Making a comeback in 2023, we saw the revival of this popular toy sell out last year, and we expect the new Furby Galaxy Edition to do the same. Between January and August 2024, Nigerian bank customers paid N133.89 billion in Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL), underlining the government’s push to expand the tax bracket amid dwindling oil earnings. The figure, revealed in the 2025-2027 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper (MTEF/FSP), represents 76% of the N175.11 billion target set for EMTL in the 2024 budget. The EMTL, introduced under the Finance Act 2020, imposes an N50 charge on every electronic transfer or receipt of N10,000 and above, with deductions carried out by banks on behalf of the government. This measure is part of the government’s broader strategy to expand the tax net and increase internally generated revenue as oil revenues—the traditional backbone of Nigeria’s economy—continue to decline due to theft, and production shortfalls. As part of efforts to enhance revenue from the EMTL, the government expanded its application in 2024 to include transactions processed by financial technology platforms. In September, major fintech companies such as OPay, Moniepoint, and PalmPay notified their customers of the planned levy implementation, which was later enforced on December 1, 2024. This extension marks a significant shift, as fintech platforms previously offered free or low-cost transaction services, a feature that made them attractive alternatives to traditional banks. With the EMTL now uniformly applied across all financial service providers, including fintech platforms, the government has effectively eliminated the disparity between the two sectors, ensuring broader compliance and collection. The extension of the EMTL to fintech platforms is expected to boost collections significantly in the coming year, with the government projecting N228.85 billion in revenue for 2025. This represents a 31% increase over the 2024 target, highlighting the importance of the levy in bridging the country’s revenue gap. For customers, the uniform implementation of the EMTL has ended the era of free banking services offered by FinTech platforms. While these platforms were previously celebrated for their affordability, the mandatory N50 deduction now aligns them with traditional banking practices, adding to the financial burden on Nigerians, particularly in a challenging economic climate. The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has also broadened the EMTL’s scope by including foreign currency transactions. Initially applicable only to local currency transactions, the levy now covers all electronic transfers in foreign currencies. Banks began applying this directive retroactively in January 2024, deducting the N50 charge on foreign currency transactions conducted between 2021 and 2023. This development reflects the government’s determination to maximize revenue from all possible avenues, particularly as electronic transactions continue to grow in volume and value. Revenue derived from the EMTL is shared among the three tiers of government, with the federal government receiving 15%, state governments 50%, and local governments 35%. This distribution model aims to ensure that the benefits of the levy are felt across the country, addressing the fiscal needs of different levels of governance. However, while the EMTL forms part of a broader strategy by the federal government to diversify its revenue streams, the levy raises questions about the impact on financial inclusion and the cost of banking services, especially for low-income earners. Many are concerned that while the levy provides a crucial source of income, its growing scope and application may further strain citizens already grappling with economic hardship.Article content A provincial state memorial service will be held for former Premier John Horgan on Dec. 15. Bengaluru: Reacting to the Karnataka police notice summoning him for questioning over his demand for disenfranchisement of Muslims, Vokkaliga seer Chandrashekaranatha Swami stated on Saturday that he was ready to go to jail and had left the matter to God. The seer told the media on Saturday, “I am ready to go to jail if they want me to. I had taken part in the pro-farmer protest and spoken against the alleged snatching of their lands by the Waqf Board. I can’t go to the police station for questioning. If they come to my mutt, I will give clarification for my statement.” “The statement against Muslims was a slip of the tongue. It was not intentional. Expressing regret, I had made the statement the very next day. Let’s leave the matter here,” he stated. “Our Mutt has Muslim devotees too. I also attend marriage functions of the Muslim community. I don’t understand why the complaint was registered against me,” the seer stated. “I don’t know about the notice issued by the police summoning me for questioning. I am not in a good state of health. Many leaders have met me and expressed their solidarity with me. I am not bothered about consequences,” the seer maintained. “I have never stated anything regarding banning of the Waqf Board. I have demanded that farmers’ lands must not be taken away. Why is the government acting in such a fashion? The appeasement of one community by the government is not good,” he opined. “Many statements were made earlier. My statement won’t make a difference and there is a Constitution. My whole intention is the farmers should not be exploited. Let me see the legal consequences,” the seer maintained. Swami heads the Vishwa Vokkaligara Mahasamsthana Mutt and the statements were made at a protest on Tuesday in Bengaluru, organised by the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh, a farmers’ organisation linked to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to condemn the Waqf Board’s alleged move to take away farmers’ lands. Swami stated, “Politicians indulge in vote bank politics and appeasement of Muslims. Hence, Muslims should be deprived of exercising their voting powers. This should be done and the end of vote bank politics would help the progress of the country.” Upparpet police have registered a FIR against the seer following the complaint in this regard. The police have lodged an FIR under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the seer. The complaint stated that the statement by the seer was provocative and threatens to disturb communal harmony in society. The filing of the FIR against him has taken a serious political turn with a Karnataka BJP delegation visiting him on Friday and warning of “serious consequences” if he was booked by the police. The BJP delegation’s visit to the powerful Vokkaliga seer was headed by Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka and former Deputy CM and BJP MLA C.N. Ashwath Narayan.None

Flacco, a New Jersey native who turns 40 on Jan. 16, has passed for 1,167 yards and nine touchdowns in six games this season, including four starts. He also has thrown five interceptions. The 22-year-old Richardson was selected by Indianapolis with the No. 4 pick in the 2023 draft.
