CARSON, Calif. — Joseph Paintsil and Dejan Joveljic scored in the first half, and the LA Galaxy won their record sixth MLS Cup championship with a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday. After striking twice in the first 13 minutes of the final with goals from their star forwards, the Galaxy nursed their lead through a scoreless second half to raise their league's biggest trophy for the first time since 2014. MLS' most successful franchise struggled through most of the ensuing decade, even finishing 26th in the 29-team league last year. But the Galaxy turned everything around this season with a high-scoring new lineup that finished second in the Western Conference and then streaked through the playoffs with a playoff-record 18 goals in five games to win another crown. “I’m just so proud of this group after the challenges that we (had) and the way they bounced back and competed as a group,” Galaxy coach Greg Vanney said. “We spent a lot of energy at the start, but I’m just so proud of these guys. They’ve cemented themselves as legends in this club.” Sean Nealis scored for the seventh-seeded Red Bulls, whose improbable postseason charge ended one win shy of their first Cup championship. With the league's youngest roster, New York fell just short of becoming the lowest-seeded team to win MLS' playoff tournament under first-year German coach Sandro Schwarz. “I love these guys,” Schwarz said. “Some guys, they are crying. In the big picture, that’s a start. Sometimes when you lose the final, it’s tough, but you use this experience to create the next energy, the next intensity.” The Galaxy won this title without perhaps their most important player. Riqui Puig, the playmaking midfielder from Barcelona who ran their offense impressively all season long, tore a ligament in his knee last week in the Western Conference final. Puig watched this game in a suit, but his teammates hadn't forgotten him: After his replacement, Gastón Brugman, set up LA's opening goal with a superb pass, Paintsil held up Puig's jersey to their fans during the celebration. “I was really waiting for this moment,” said Paintsil, who scored his 14th goal of an impressive season. “I’m much more, 10 times faster than them, and Gaston saw the space. ... It was really a good thing. We did it for Riqui, and we did it for our family that came, and our supporters.” Just four minutes later, Joveljic sprinted past four New York defenders and chipped home the 21st goal of his outstanding year as the Galaxy’s striker. Brugman was named the MLS Cup MVP after a commanding performance in midfield. The Uruguayan hadn't started a match for the Galaxy since Oct. 5, playing only as a postseason substitute before the final. Galaxy goalkeeper John McCarthy made four saves to win his second MLS title in three seasons. He was the MVP of the 2022 MLS Cup Final for the Galaxy's crosstown rival, Los Angeles FC. Paintsil put the Galaxy ahead in the ninth minute when he ran onto that sublime pass from Brugman and pounded home his 14th MLS goal — including four in the playoffs — in the Ghanaian forward's outstanding first season. Just four minutes later, Joveljic sprinted past four New York defenders and chipped home the 21st goal of his outstanding year as the Galaxy's striker. Nealis got New York on the scoreboard in the 28th minute when he volleyed home a ball that got loose in LA's penalty area after a corner. The Galaxy's usually shaky defense gave up another handful of good chances before reaching halftime with a tenuous lead. The second half was lively, but scoreless. Red Bulls captain Emil Forsberg hit the outside of the post in the 72nd minute, while LA's Gabriel Pec and Galaxy substitute Marco Reus nearly converted chances a few moments later. The ball got loose again in the Galaxy's penalty area in the third minute of extra time, but two Red Bulls couldn't finish. The Galaxy bench rushed onto the field and prematurely celebrated a victory in the seventh minute of injury time, only to be herded back off for another 30 seconds of play. After Galaxy owner Phil Anschutz received the MLS Cup that bears his name because of his steady financial support of the league during its shaky years, Galaxy captain Maya Yoshida carried the trophy onto a stage filled with his teammates for a celebration amid fireworks and confetti. The Galaxy extended their lead over DC United (4) for the most MLS Cup championships in league history. The Red Bulls remain one of three original MLS franchises never to win the title, along with FC Dallas and the New England Revolution. The Galaxy's Greg Vanney became the fourth coach to win an MLS title with two clubs. The former Galaxy player also won it all with Toronto in 2017. The Galaxy finished 17-0-3 this season at their frequently renamed suburban stadium, where the sellout crowd of 26,812 for the final included several robust cheering sections of traveling Red Bulls supporters hoping to see their New Jersey-based club's breakthrough on MLS' biggest stage. Just last season, the Galaxy's own supporters boycotted the team at certain matches, fed up with years of mismanagement and no progress. The club famous for employing global stars from David Beckham and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Robbie Keane and Javier "Chicharito" Hernández swiftly rebuilt itself into a contender this season by spending big to get lesser-known young talents from around the world. The Galaxy signed Pec from Brazil and Paintsil out of Belgium. The duo combined with incumbent Serbian striker Joveljic to form a potent attack that could outscore almost any MLS opponent. But the Galaxy also relied heavily on Puig, their Catalan catalyst and one of MLS' best players. Puig stayed in last week's game after injuring his knee, and he even delivered the decisive pass to Joveljic for the game's only goal. Get local news delivered to your inbox!

ISTANBUL Scientists in China are claiming to have designed a sunscreen that can reduce body temperatures by up to six degrees Celsius, the Daily South China Morning Post said Thursday. The sunscreen has been designed to protect the skin as climate change has resulted in higher temperatures around the world, according to research by Beijing-based Tsinghua University. “We prepared a radiative cooling sunscreen that can not only significantly reduce the skin temperature but also protects the skin from being harmed by the ultra violet radiation,” according to the research. The product has “promising commercial potential in the sunscreen market,” it added. Zhang Rufan, one of the researchers, said: “Humans must adapt as climate change leads to more extreme weather, but adjusting to heat is generally more challenging than dealing with cold.” “We can wear thick clothing to stay warm in freezing temperatures. But in extreme heat higher than 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit), outdoor workers like transport police, road workers and farmers have to cope with severe conditions that can lead to heat stress, exhaustion or death,” said Zhang, according to the South China Morning Post. “They need effective cooling methods and skin protection.”

New Pop-Up Yoga and Pilates Studio Brings Fitness Solutions to Busy WomenMAHOMET — Minutes before she and two family members were fatally shot Wednesday night, a Mahomet woman described the man thought to be the killer in a social-media post. On a Twitter account where she shared occasional selfies, life updates and memes, Sara Mason, 26, posted about a man in a motorcycle helmet being outside her home the night of Wednesday, Dec. 18, less than 20 minutes before police were called to the scene. "Trying not to be scared suburban white woman about the dude waiting outside of my house for a .... While now? Wanting to speak to my brother while wearing a motorcycle helmet (drive in a car)," she posted at 9:22 p.m. Within a minute, she added, "He like left but will probably be back. Anyway." Mahomet police were called at 9:41 p.m. to the residence on Riverside Court, where they discovered Mason, who was pronounced dead at the scene; and her mother, 61-year-old Janis Mason, and brother, 23-year-old Caleb Mason, who both died a little later after being taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. It does not appear that Sara Mason recognized John R. Lyons, 24, the man police suspect in the triple homicide. Lyons fled to suburban Chicago, where he was killed in a confrontation with police in Berwyn. Champaign County court records indicate that in June, Lyons filed a lawsuit alleging Caleb Mason had harmed him in some way and requesting compensation in an amount between $15,000 and $50,000. Mahomet police Chief Mike Metzler said Lyons knew one of the victims. Police reports thus far have not included details about whether Lyons was wearing a motorcycle helmet. However, on Thursday, Dec. 19, far-right political pundit and streamer Nicholas Fuentes posted that an armed individual who arrived at his house late Wednesday night wearing a motorcycle helmet had "committed a triple homicide in southern Illinois." "Last night an armed killer made an attempt on my life at my home, which was recently doxed on this platform," Fuentes wrote. He said the killer broke into his neighbor's home in Berwyn, where police said Lyons broke in and killed two dogs while attempting to evade arrest. Fuentes posted multiple clips of footage from Ring security cameras that show a man in brown pants, a blue coat and a white motorcycle helmet who is carrying a firearm and crossbow. In the footage, the man gets out of a car while wearing a motorcycle helmet and appears to ring the doorbell and knock on the front door, then attempt to gain access through multiple entry points. The only audio in any of the clips is while the man is at the front door and apparently says "Yo, Nick." Timestamps on footage Fuentes posted indicate the events around his home in Berwyn beginning at 11:29 p.m., about one hour and 50 minutes after police were called to the home in Mahomet. About 10 minutes later, at 11:38 p.m., Berwyn police responded to a report of a man with a gun. "It is to the freedom of the people of Illinois that we are addressing this law," Gov. J.B. Pritzker said May 10, referring to the state's semiautomatic weapons ban, "their freedom to be at the Highland Park parade without getting shot and killed." A group of sophomores, juniors and seniors has used the equipment to learn multiple skills and even earn certifications through Northwest’s energy systems technology pathway. It’s one of many career and technical education programs in the Omaha Public Schools. It’s been three years since the district expanded college and career academies and pathways to all nine high schools. The programming was once available to only a select few but is now mandatory for all students. The move was initially controversial among some staff and parents, with some saying the changes were rushed or didn’t make sense. But OPS officials said the plan would give students critical career skills while they explore job industries in an engaging way. People are also reading... Schools, nonprofits and education officials across Nebraska and the U.S. are boosting career technical education (CTE) to keep up with industry demand and increase opportunities for secondary students. “Schools are expanding their CTE offerings to meet the needs of both students and employers, with a focus on those fields most in demand in Nebraska, such as health care, advanced manufacturing and information technology,” said Katie Graham, state director of the Nebraska Department of Education’s Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education. “These areas reflect growing industries across Nebraska, and we’re seeing more students enrolling in these pathways as they recognize the value of industry-aligned education.” Gavin Craig studies during an energy systems technology pathway course at Omaha Northwest on Oct. 31. The number of Nebraska students in grades 7-12 who participate in career technical education has increased in recent years. The number of Nebraska students in grades 7-12 who participated in career technical education increased from 114,285 in the 2020-21 school year to 128,486 last school year, according to the Nebraska Department of Education. Career technical education gives students “the opportunity to explore careers and acquire real-world skills while learning the academic content they need for their future,” according to a 2022-23 report from the state’s Education Department. It also provides employers a skilled workforce to meet the demand for job openings. CTE includes a long list of industries, including agriculture, business, marketing, computer science, health science, skilled and technical science and more. For years, many of these fields experienced labor shortages, sparking changes on local, state and federal levels to create more CTE programming and funding to increase the workforce, according to Advance CTE, the national association of state CTE directors. In 2023, 47 states enacted 115 policies regarding CTE and career readiness, according to the latest Advance CTE national report. The focus on CTE has escalated in Nebraska as government officials and lawmakers have worked to prevent the state’s increasing “brain drain” — a net loss of college-educated people through migration to other states. Changes implemented in recent years include a two-year, $20 million contract to scale up the state’s internship program and more funding for the Nebraska Career Scholarship, which provides financial assistance to college students pursuing degrees in high-demand career fields. For the first time, the Nebraska Legislature also obligated $5 million of its annual budget for schools to implement CTE programming. “We see this all as a win, win, win. It’s state money that’s building a state solution, you know, for everyone who’s playing,” Graham said. “We’re so excited. Businesses are excited. We just need to get more students.” At Omaha Northwest, students in the energy systems technology pathway learn skills that can prepare them for a variety of industries, such as manufacturing, automotive and power production. The pathway is also a dual-credit program with Metropolitan Community College. Students study during an energy systems technology pathway course at Omaha Northwest High School on Oct. 31. Teresa Bender, Northwest’s curriculum specialist, said creating the energy pathway has been challenging but rewarding. The school had to get rid of its traditional industrial classes, such as woodshop and welding, to make room for the pathway program. “The goal is to have a dual-enrollment opportunity and a certificate opportunity, and in the beginning, it was terrifying and felt very hard and scary,” Bender said. “Employers look at those certificates and say, ‘Great, you know how to do this.’ It’s been phenomenal for our kids, because that way, it might not get them a job, but it’s going to help build their résumé. And that’s the heart of it.” So far, students in the program have been able to earn certifications from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and in skills like precision measurements, a critical expertise in industrial jobs. Todd Wesslund, instructor for the energy systems technology pathway, said students will graduate high school with enough credits to be halfway through an associate’s degree. “It bridges the gap a lot more between high school and college or employment,” Wesslund said. “I have no doubt we’re going to have students that just go straight into the workforce. But if a student wants to go to a university system and and major in mechanical engineering, this is it. They will be way beyond where the other students are.” School districts around Nebraska have been leaning into career technical education in recent years. In August, the Fremont Public Schools opened a $28 million high school career and technical education center that offers programming in auto mechanics, welding, construction drafting, mechatronics, robotics and health sciences. In the metro area, the Elkhorn Public Schools unveiled a new CTE scholarship program in May. Students receive funding depending on how many CTE courses they take, plus dedication to internship, community service and extracurricular hours. Seniors can qualify for $500, $900 or $1,350 in college tuition scholarships depending on their degree of involvement. The Bellevue district also finished a multimillion-dollar renovation of its career center this fall to boost CTE offerings for students. Bellevue’s Frank Kumor Career Center offers academies in automotive maintenance, aviation, certified nursing assistance and education. Brad Stueve, Bellevue’s coordinator of college and career education and enrollment, said the district has been increasing its focus on CTE over recent years. “We have a pretty robust population of kids that take our career and technical education classes. And we have a lot of great programs at both our high schools,” he said. “We have the welding programs, construction, metals classes, woods classes. The career center has just taken that to the next level and allowing these kids to take a deeper dive into some of these other careers that we offer.” The Nebraska Department of Education is also using its new funding to launch many projects around CTE. Department officials recently launched an online labor market navigation tool for schools to use in order to identify high-demand careers and other local CTE data. Graham said the department is finishing a statewide workplace experiences portal, which will be a “one-stop shop” for schools and local businesses to connect. “We’ve partnered with Avenue Scholars, which has successfully run the InternOmaha program for years — we are scaling and enhancing their internship platform and making it available at no cost to schools or businesses statewide,” Graham said. “We’re hopeful this will reduce the burden on both schools and businesses in establishing these partnerships to create authentic workplace experience opportunities for all Nebraska learners.” Northwest senior Matthews Gebreyesus said he didn’t know anything about the school’s energy pathway but now credits the program for skills that will help him after graduation, even if he doesn’t pursue the same industry. Gebreyesus said he’s planning to enroll in a college business program next year. “It’s interesting to learn new things. It’s just a fun experience,” he said. “It’s nice to learn a new skill, something that I never knew, and I can use it outside of school.” Bender said the next step in Omaha Northwest’s energy pathway is to create internship opportunities. Starting next year, school officials will begin partnering with local businesses to give students hands-on experience. Bender said career pathway programs only work if there’s an industry need. Otherwise, Nebraska’s youths end up moving “to a different industry or market, outside of the state, outside of the city,” she said. “That’s not what we want. We want our kids to stay here,” Bender said. “We want to grow our own economy, and in order for us to do that, we have to meet the needs of what our larger community is asking for, and that’s exactly what we got here.” 2024 Nebraska high school football state championship matchups Get the latest local business news delivered FREE to your inbox weekly.AP Sports SummaryBrief at 3:39 p.m. EST

Energy boss tells customers to 'snuggle up' under electric blankets to beat the cold this winter - as energy bills set to rise AGAIN next year By JASON GROVES POLITICAL EDITOR Published: 18:07 EST, 22 November 2024 | Updated: 18:09 EST, 22 November 2024 e-mail 8 View comments An energy boss yesterday suggested vulnerable customers should 'snuggle up' under electric blankets this winter – as heating bills rose again. Octopus Energy founder Greg Jackson encouraged those struggling to warm their homes this winter to avoid further costs by using cheaper heating methods. Speaking on the day that Ofgem announced the energy price cap would rise again on January 1, Mr Jackson told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: 'If people are worried about their heating, they can stay warm and healthier much more cheaply by snuggling up in electric blankets for a while.' Adding to his comments on the blankets, of which his firm has given away 65,000 to customers in need, the CEO said: 'They're not tokenism. It saves 300 quid a year on your gas bill during the crisis and keeps you warm and safe.' His remarks came as the Prime Minister defended his decision to axe vital fuel payments for ten million pensioners, saying the Budget had required 'tough decisions'. Sir Keir Starmer , who was quizzed on the issue during a string of interviews with BBC local radio stations, acknowledged he could not remember the last time he struggled to pay a bill. But he said it was right to introduce means-testing to the winter fuel payment, which means older people with incomes of more than about £13,000 will lose a lifeline worth £300. He said: 'At the moment, the allowance goes to everyone, whether they need it or not... many don't need it because they are relatively wealthy. Most people would say that doesn't make sense when we have got a really tight Budget... it makes sense to make the change.' There is mounting concern about the impact of rising energy costs and cuts to winter fuel payments during the current cold snap. The Prime Minister has defended his decision to axe vital fuel payments for ten million pensioners, saying the Budget required 'tough decisions' Octopus Energy founder Greg Jackson encouraged those struggling to warm their homes this winter to avoid further costs by using cheaper heating methods Official Government figures this week forecast that the proposed cuts would drive 100,000 extra pensioners into fuel poverty over the next two years Official Government figures this week forecast that the cuts would drive 100,000 extra pensioners into fuel poverty over the next two years. Age UK said the study by the Department for Work and Pensions confirmed that 'brutally rationing the winter fuel payment will swell the numbers of pensioners already living below the poverty line'. But Sir Keir disputed the Government's own figures, saying they failed to take account of factors such as a drive to encourage the poorest to sign up for Pension Credit, which would guarantee their winter fuel payments. Read More BREAKING NEWS Energy bills to rise again from January in bitter blow to cash-strapped Brits At one point during his interview round, the PM appeared to suggest the cut to winter fuel payments had yet to come in, saying: 'Until we make the changes, that is obviously available to everyone – all pensioners.' But in fact, ministers rushed through emergency legislation in September to ensure the payments continue to only those on Pension Credit this winter, saving the Government £1.5billion. Ofgem yesterday confirmed that the energy price cap will increase by approximately 1.2 per cent from January, raising it by £21 to £1,738. Tim Jarvis, of Ofgem, said the cap had remained 'relatively stable' but acknowledged 'the cost of energy remains a challenge for too many households'. Galette's 20 help Youngstown State knock off South Carolina Upstate 72-64JD Vance is leaving the Senate for the vice presidency. That's set off a scramble for his Ohio seat COLUMBUS, Ohio -- JD Vance's election as vice president has opened up one of Ohio's U.S. Senate seats for the third time in as many years, setting off a scramble for the appointment among the state's ruling Republicans. GOP Gov. Mike DeWine is tasked with filling the vacancy, giving the pragmatic center-right politician a hand in setting his party's course in the state potentially for years to come. Jon Husted and Attorney General Dave Yost are preparing to face off for governor in 2026, that appears unlikely. Husted is... JULIE CARR SMYTH Associated Press
