I was just 8 years old the first time my family came under attack. Even at that young age, I could sense the tension in my parents as they tried to shield me from the vitriol. But secrets were never their strong suit. It was 2015 and my dad had decided to leave his corporate job to run for the state legislature. On weekends, we’d hit the pavement, knocking on doors and attending fundraisers. Some people would greet us warmly with offers of coffee and cookies. But there were others, like the older man who thought it was OK to yell at a kid and his father to get off his property before he “made us.” It wasn’t your typical family bonding experience, but I loved it. Being immersed in politics at such a young age gave me a unique perspective and appreciation for civic engagement. Little did I know the personal toll it would take on all of us. As my dad’s political career progressed, the demands on his time became increasingly brutal. During legislative sessions, I would often go days without seeing him, as he burned the midnight oil at the Capitol. He missed family dinners, vacations, and school events. The line between our personal and his professional life vanished. Personal attacks bled into my life as social media posts circulated among my friends. The need for police surveillance of our home due to death threats had become a reality. Yet, I admired his dedication and believed the positive impact he could have made the hard parts worthwhile. That changed in 2022 when my dad decided to run for mayor of Denver. I remember sitting in the audience with my mom and brother, when one of his opponents flat-out called him a racist live on air in front of thousands of people. I watched as almost everyone on stage piled on knowing nothing about him. This was my father, a man raising two boys of color in Denver who talked to us all of the time about the things he knew he couldn’t understand. The following weeks, he was subjected to a relentless barrage of personal attacks from his opponents, attacks that had nothing to do with ideas or policy — they were just about him as a white man. Standing on the sidelines unable to come to my father’s defense, I had never felt more powerless in my life, or more disillusioned by politics. His opponents were not interested in debating the issues or understanding his positions. They wanted to create clickbait to help further their own campaigns. In that moment, something inside me snapped. The pure, unshakable love for politics that I had once felt gave way to a deep cynicism about the state of public discourse. I had grown up dreaming of one day following in my father’s footsteps, but now those ambitions felt tainted by the harsh realities I had witnessed. Only days ago, even after my dad decided to resign from the state Senate, the attacks continued. Rather than celebrating his years of service and often unrecognized achievements, he was met with a scathing, unprofessional news segment that was more character assassination than responsible journalism. From someone who publicly advocates for professionalism and impactful journalism, it’s deeply disappointing to witness such inappropriate and unprofessional attacks. As Denver’s most-watched local newscaster, Kyle Clark’s vulgar remarks highlight the very issues plaguing our political system. Reducing a man who has spent a decade in public service to a caricature of a power-hungry politician is simply wrong. The media and critics know Senator Chris Hansen. They don’t know “Dad” – that he loves good coffee, worries about paying for college, felt guilty having to say no to us a lot as we were growing up. They don’t understand the hard conversations and decisions that have been made within our home. And I know my family isn’t alone. We live in a world in which public servants are supposed to just ignore personal attacks, yet these attacks too often cross boundaries in inappropriate ways. They impact families, friends and neighbors. I’ve come to realize that the personal toll of political life makes long careers in public office a near impossibility in today’s climate unless you are someone who shuts everyone out and doesn’t care. But that’s not what good leaders do. Good-intentioned people simply cannot succeed in a political landscape that rewards division, demonization, and a single-minded pursuit of scoring points and tearing each other down. But what can we do to change it? Get involved in a campaign to elect someone you believe in. Show up at local city council, school board, state House or Senate meetings to actually listen to your representatives and ask questions. This will let you get to know them as people — imperfect but hopefully well-intentioned. It will let you become a more critical consumer of the news; it will give you insight into the agendas people might have when they misrepresent an elected official’s position. And it lets you be a partner to your elected officials instead of just bystanders. Before criticizing an elected official, try asking yourself, “What things might they be thinking about that I am not because they see a bigger picture?” I’ve seen the good side of politics. I’ve been infatuated with the change that it can bring into people’s lives. Yet we get so caught up in the hatred of political opponents that we forget politics can be a pure and true tool for the American people. If we can restore a sense of shared purpose and mutual respect in our politics, then perhaps the personal sacrifices required of our public servants will not be in vain. The creative midfielder was a top priority for Arteta, as Arsenal lacked the playmaking prowess and vision in the middle of the park. After extensive scouting and negotiations, Arsenal had set their sights on a promising young talent who could unlock defences with his passing and vision. However, in a last-minute twist, the deal fell through due to contractual disputes, leaving Arsenal empty-handed in their pursuit of creativity.

Belagavi: Karnataka accounts for more than 25% of all digital-arrest scams reported across India, with a total of Rs 109 crore lost to digital crimes in 2024 in the state alone. In Karnataka, Bengaluru has seen the highest number of incidents — 480 — resulting in a total loss of Rs 42.4 crore. India has reported 42,000 cyber-crime cases, and 11,000 of them were in Karnataka. Replying to a question from BJP's K Prathap Simha Nayak, home minister G Parameshwara informed the legislative council that the growing trend of cyberfraud was increasingly targeting senior citizens and women. Karnataka has reported 641 digital-arrest cases till date this year. After Bengaluru, Tier-II cities like Mysuru and Mangaluru stand second and third with 24 and 21 cases, respectively. Despite the scale of the fraud, police have recovered Rs 9 crore (8.25%) and arrested 27 individuals linked to the crimes. New-age scams have spelt terror in the country. PM Modi, in his Mann Ki Baat broadcast in late October, warned people against digital-arrest scams and outlined a three-step formula – ‘wait, think and take action' – to prevent likely "digital arrests". These scams involve fraudsters making video calls from lookalike police stations and posing as officers from central agencies such as CBI, ED, Income Tax, or the customs. They claim victims are under investigation for narcotics or smuggling offences, convincing them to reveal their banking details or make digital payments. To help those in distress, the govt has established helplines, urging citizens to dial 1930 to report such incidents. Additionally, over 700 social-media accounts and groups, including 268 Facebook and 465 Telegram groups, have been deactivated in efforts to curb the fraud. The minister stressed that public awareness remains the most effective tool in combating these crimes, especially as scammers continue to target educational institutions and exploit social media platforms. Craig Gordon had kept the score down to 1-0 before being penalised after a collision with goalscorer Amin Chiakha. The goalkeeper got hands to the ball just after Chiakha who then ran into him at pace but Italian referee Fabio Maresca pointed to the spot after briefly watching very limited footage of the clash. Gordon was beaten from the spot and Copenhagen comfortably saw out the 2-0 win which leaves Hearts looking for a crucial victory at home to Moldovan side Petrocub next Thursday. Critchley told Hearts TV: “A very difficult game for us. They proved this was our toughest game, playing against very good opposition and you have a plan to try and take the game to them. “You know you are going to have to be well organised and suffer sometimes but you want to try and hurry them up and turn the ball over. But when we decide to have press, they are good at playing around you and playing through and that can be difficult for the players. But we kept going right to the end. “They were the better team and they deserved to win but at 1-0 we were still in the game and a really poor decision has taken away a chance for us to have a real go at the end of the game. “I had spoken about that at half-time and what we were going to do. And then when it’s 2-0 the game is done.” Hearts suffered a blow when defender Frankie Kent limped off in the first half. Critchley said: “It’s too early to say now but he said he was feeling his quad. Obviously losing him is not ideal. We have to keep our fingers crossed and see how he is.” Get all the latest news from around the country Scan the QR code on your mobile device for all the latest news from around the country
A common pitfall for novice bettors is to assume repeat performances, often ignoring the potential variances of a particular game. For example, not many anticipated the Dallas Cowboys would compete with the Washington Commanders on Sunday, let alone win as a 10.5-point underdog. But Dallas snapped its five-game losing streak and looked much better than its back-to-back blowouts suggested. However, sometimes previous games provide a window into how teams might specifically match up with one another. The Toronto Raptors visit the Detroit Pistons on Monday in a rematch of a 99-95 Detroit win from 10 days prior. The over/under is 220.5, and I anticipate another low-scoring performance and thus am betting the under. While I do expect the teams to shoot a little better than their combined 38.5% from the previous meeting, I still think the total is too high. The main reason is Pistons star Cade Cunningham listed as doubtful and unlikely to play. He leads the team in scoring and assists, and they lack the depth to replace his production. Jaden Ivey will now serve as the main point guard but he is more of a shoot-first guard. Thus, I also am betting under 5.5 assists for Ivey. On Saturday, Ivey only mustered four assists in Cunningham’s absence while finishing with a team-high 16 field goal attempts and six free throws. He has elite speed and athleticism and prioritizes attacking the rim over distribution. He’s also a ball hawk without Cunningham and grabbed seven rebounds so I also played over 4.5 rebounds at +115 odds. Another prop also has my attention: Raptors center Jakob Poeltl has grabbed at least 12 rebounds in five straight games, including 18 in the previous meeting with Detroit. I like over 11.5 rebounds at +110 odds with the rationale of my expecting the Pistons likely struggling to generate quality shot attempts and enabling the seven-footer numerous defensive rebounding opportunities. Betting on the NBA? The few times Poeltl has finished with less than 12 rebounds is when he opposes an elite rebounder or dominant big man. The last five times this occurred, Toronto faced Giannis Antetokounmpo, Anthony Davis, Domantas Sabonis (twice) and Nikola Jokic. Detroit’s Jalen Duren simply does not measure up to this All-Stars. PICKS: Under 220.5 (-110, ESPN BET ) | Jaden Ivey under 5.5 assists (-140, Bet365 ) | Jakob Poeltl over 11.5 rebounds (+110, Caesars ) Why Trust New York Post Betting Doug Kezirian is a New York Post contributor who currently serves as the Chief Content Officer for Only Players, a sports betting media company. Angela Merkel, former German Chancellor, in her newly released memoir, expresses "huge concern" about the rising influence of Elon Musk in former President and President-elect Donald Trump’s administration. Merkel reflects on Trump’s leadership and voices unease about the increasing power of Silicon Valley, as reported by The Guardian from extracts of her memoir published in Die Zeit. Trump’s alliance with big tech Angela Merkel reveals her growing alarm over the visible alliance between Donald Trump and major tech giants. In an interview with Der Spiegel, she conveyed her worries about the expanding power of Silicon Valley companies, particularly through their f inancial influence . “There is now a visible alliance between him and the big companies from Silicon Valley, which have enormous power through capital,” Merkel was quoted as saying. Elon Musk’s role and influence in Trump’s administration A central concern in Merkel’s memoir is the expanding role of Elon Musk , CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, in Trump’s second term. Musk, who is advising Trump and leading a newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) focused on government efficiency, has become a key figure in the president-elect's strategy. Merkel, however, cautioned that Musk’s control over significant technological resources could pose serious issues. “If a person like him is the owner of 60% of all satellites orbiting in space, then that must be a huge concern for us along with the political issues,” Merkel was quoted as saying. She stressed the critical role of the political sphere in maintaining a balance of power between the powerful and the general public. Protecting political authority from Corporate influence Merkel further emphasized the importance of safeguarding political authority against undue corporate influence. She warned that if politics were overly influenced by powerful corporations or the ultra-wealthy, it could undermine democratic systems. “If this final authority is too strongly influenced by companies, whether through capital power or technological capabilities, then this is an unprecedented challenge for us all,” she cautioned. The need for checks on Corporate power A central theme in Merkel ’s memoir is the necessity of maintaining checks on corporate power and the ultra-rich in democratic societies. "In a democracy, politics is never powerless against companies," she asserted, underscoring the essential role of governments in ensuring that no individual or corporation gains excessive power over the state. This reflection underscores her concerns about Musk ’s growing influence in the Trump administration. Social media’s role in shaping political discourse Merkel also addressed the impact of social media platforms, particularly those owned by Musk. She acknowledged the disruptive influence of social media on political discourse and emphasized the need for counterbalance. "It is important to counterbalance the furore in social media, such as that stirred up by the AfD in this country," Merkel was quoted as saying. Reflections on US elections and Trump’s leadership In further extracts from her memoir, Merkel shared her emotional response to the US presidential elections, particularly her support for Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris. She admitted that their defeats against Trump filled her with sadness. Merkel’s recollections also shed light on Trump’s approach to international relations. She described his diplomatic style as “aggressively transactional,” reminiscent of his past career as a real estate developer, which she found troubling. Moreover, Merkel noted Trump ’s fascination with autocratic leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, describing him as particularly drawn to politicians with “autocratic and dictatorial traits.” Musk’s influence on Trump’s second term As Trump moves toward a potential second term, Musk ’s role in the president-elect's transition is growing. Musk has become a key figure in managing Trump’s return to the White House, sitting in on calls with global leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Furthermore, Musk has discussed proposals to cut a third of the US federal budget, adding to his controversial influence in shaping US governance. In the midst of Government formation negotiations for the Social Democrats, newly elected TD Eoin Hayes has been suspended from the party – Gary Gannon explain where the party is at. On The Hard Shoulder , Social Democrats TD Gary Gannon said the parliamentary party “took a kicking” this week . “I suppose we have to get ourselves up off the mat, and we have done that, we regrouped fairly quickly,” he said. “I think the decision we made with the parliamentary party was swift, it was in accordance with our values to stand for accountability. “We haven't shied away from it, we've met the press every single day since, we've stood over ourselves. “So I think we've in terms of how we reacted, I'm quite proud of that, but it was a tough day for us.” Speaking about an article in The Irish Independent discussing political accountability , Deputy Gannon said that he was mentioned several times “rightfully so” as he “didn’t meet standards last week”. “We never claimed to be pure,” he said. “We say our foundational sounds are transparency and accountability, we have standards that if we don't meet, that we will treat ourselves as we treat those who haven't met them too.” Deputy Gannon doesn’t know if he can see Eoin Hayes back in the party. “This has been an absolute whirlwind of a week,” he said. “I think time will tell its own tale - there's a lot of lessons to be learned for all of us here.” On Government negotiations, Deputy Gannon said the Soc Dems don’t want to be in Government “just to make up numbers”. “We made a commitment before the election to the electorate that we would meet with every single party,” he said. “We met with Labour, we met with Sinn Féin and yesterday we met with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, which was very interesting. “Today, the parliamentary party decided to go a little bit deeper and meet and actually have another meeting with all the other parties again. “I mean, this is what an effective political party should be doing after an election like I don't want to sit in perennial opposition, I want to have my policies on the table, and this is how that starts.” Deputy Gannon added that the party will "drive a hard bargain" throughout negotiations. Houston is part of a 21-member cabinet. His cabinet in 2021 had 19 people. Houston will be responsible for trade, priorities and planning, as well as intergovernmental affairs. As premier, he also serves as president of the executive council. Barb Adams retains her responsibilities for seniors and long-term care and military relations. She also becomes deputy premier. John Lohr is the province's new finance minister. He takes on responsibility for labour relations and maintains the municipal affairs portfolio. Several former cabinet ministers dropped Brendan Maguire is now the education minister. He's also responsible for advanced education, a portfolio formerly held by Waverley-Fall River-Beaver Bank MLA Brian Wong. Wong was not included in this cabinet. Former education minister Becky Druhan trades that file for justice and becomes the province's new attorney general. Druhan, a lawyer before entering politics, is also responsible for the province's Office of Equity and Anti-Racism. Another former PC cabinet minister not included in the new group is Lunenburg MLA Susan Corkum-Greek. Her former portfolio of economic development has been rebranded as Growth and Development, a new department that will also be responsible for housing. Argyle MLA Colton LeBlanc will be in charge of that, while maintaining his responsibilities for the Acadian Affairs and Francophonie division. Tilley gets his cabinet post In the biggest shakeup announced Thursday, former public works minister Kim Masland was moved to the Emergency Management Department. Fred Tilley, the former Liberal MLA who crossed the floor less than a week before the election and made no secret of his cabinet aspirations, takes on Masland's former file of public works. Cumberland South MLA Tory Rushton will continue as the natural resources minister, but his former energy file is being hived off and given to Richmond MLA Trevor Boudreau. Boudreau makes his return to cabinet after taking a leave for personal reasons during the last PC mandate. The following cabinet ministers maintained their responsibilities from the previous mandate: Michelle Thompson: health, Office of Health-Care Professionals Recruitment, health-care redevelopment. Brian Comer: addictions and mental health. Greg Morrow: agriculture. Kent Smith: fisheries and aquaculture. Twila Grosse: African Nova Scotian affairs and the Public Service Commission. Reporters blocked from ceremony Thursday's ceremony was unique for several reasons. It was the final public act for Lt.-Gov. Arthur LeBlanc before he leaves his post. It was also the first time in anyone's memory that reporters were not permitted to attend the ceremony, a move the government attributed to capacity issues at the Halifax Convention Centre. Security was stationed at the doors of the building to ensure anyone entering had been invited. In another departure from the norm, the premier and cabinet ministers were not made available after the event, something Houston downplayed to reporters standing outside as he arrived.
