Far-right populist looks set to enter runoff in Romanian presidential electionSpeaking at the News9 Global Summit, Anuj Gupta, the co-founder of Sudeva Delhi FC, emphasised on how India can rise in football in the coming years and the major steps that are needed to be taken to make India a footballing nation. New Delhi: Making India a footballing nation was one of the major agendas discussed in depth during Day 2 of the News9 Global Summit in Stuttgart. Walking into its second day, the event saw several exciting sessions unfolding in the German city on Friday. At the three-day event, sports has been earmarked as one of the major aspects of Indo-German collaboration alongside culture, economy, technology, business, and others. During the session, ‘ India as a Footballing Nation: A German Template’ , the beautiful game was discussed with respect to its low prominence in India and the steps to change its status. Germany has notably been active in the promotion and development of football and has also taken several initiatives to spot, scout, and nurture fresh talent, making them professional stars. Even Bundesliga partnered with the TV9 Network to pledge commitment to nurturing the Indian football ecosystem. Sudeva Delhi FC’s co-founder Anuj Gupta was one of the four panelists called upon the stage during the interactive session as he shed light on increasing the level of football in India. “We need a poster boy. If we can produce top players from India, that can inspire millions of grassroots players to get into the sport and not look at the performance of the national team but rather look at youth development,” Anuj said. He was also of the opinion that for any sport to excel, one needs role models, which isn’t the case in India. Anuj also laid emphasis on “patience” which India require to climb up in football. “We need more time and need to be patient to take India to a greater level in football. Hopefully we will produce first professional player very soon and he may play for VfB Stuttgart in the future,” Anuj added. “In a nutshell, I believe we need to produce one player who plays at the top level in Europe,” says Anuj Gupta, Co-Founder, Sudeva Delhi FC #News9GlobalSummit #News9GlobalSummitGermany #TV9Network #IndiaGermany @bhardwajmeha pic.twitter.com/bHHwhoa7NV — News9 (@News9Tweets) November 22, 2024 What India actually need to become a footballing nation? Also speaking at the session was the Chief Marketing & Sales Officer of VfB Stuttgart, Rouven Kasper, who was straight up asked about the biggest things India need to become a footballing nation. Rouven had a very intellectual answer to this as he said, “India need two things to become a footballing nation – need to believe that they can develop football and they need good people.” “India need two things to become footballing nation – believe that they can develop football and they need good people,” says Rouven Kasper, Chief Marketing & Sales Officer, VfB Stuttgart #News9GlobalSummit #News9GlobalSummitGermany #TV9Network #IndiaGermany @bhardwajmeha pic.twitter.com/wg6WnrrvnQ — News9 (@News9Tweets) November 22, 2024 Rouven added that the nation need to believe in one “good collaboration” and the “right concept” and a “sustainable way”. “Summarise it (collab), figure out if it is successful or not and find the right people (to excel in football). When there are right people together in one boat and if found the right people for building football, it can flourish heavily,” Rouven said during the session. Also among the panelists were Kay Dammholz, Director of Media Rights at DFB, and Peer Naubert, the CMO of Bundesliga who too talked in detail about building India’s football ecosystem and what can the nation take away as lessons from Germany to build football from the grassroots level. Alex Ovechkin is expected to miss 4 to 6 weeks with a broken left legCHATHAM, N.J. — That buzzing coming out of New Jersey? It’s unclear if it’s drones or something else, but for sure the nighttime sightings are producing tons of talk, a raft of conspiracy theories and craned necks looking skyward. Cropping up on local news and social media sites around Thanksgiving, the saga of the drones reported over New Jersey has reached incredible heights. This week seems to have begun a new, higher-profile chapter: Lawmakers are demanding (but so far not getting) explanations from federal and state authorities about what’s behind them. Gov. Phil Murphy wrote to President Joe Biden asking for answers. New Jersey’s new senator, Andy Kim, spent Thursday night on a drone hunt in rural northern New Jersey, and posted about it on X. But perhaps the most fantastic development is the dizzying proliferation of conspiracies — none of which has been confirmed or suggested by federal and state officials who say they’re looking into what’s happening. It has become shorthand to refer to the flying machines as drones, but there are questions about whether what people are seeing are unmanned aircraft or something else. Some theorize the drones came from an Iranian mothership. Others think they are the Secret Service making sure President-elect Donald Trump’s Bedminster property is secure. Others worry about China. The deep state. And on. In the face of uncertainty, people have done what they do in 2024: Create a social media group. The Facebook page, New Jersey Mystery Drones — let’s solve it , has nearly 44,000 members, up from 39,000 late Thursday. People are posting their photo and video sightings, and the online commenters take it from there. One video shows a whitish light flying in a darkened sky, and one commenter concludes it’s otherworldly. “Straight up orbs,” the person says. Others weigh in to say it’s a plane or maybe a satellite. Another group called for hunting the drones literally, shooting them down like turkeys. (Do not shoot at anything in the sky, experts warn.) Trisha Bushey, 48, of Lebanon Township, New Jersey, lives near Round Valley Reservoir where there have been numerous sightings. She said she first posted photos online last month wondering what the objects were and became convinced they were drones when she saw how they moved and when her son showed her on a flight tracking site that no planes were around. Now she’s glued to the Mystery Drones page, she said. “I find myself — instead of Christmas shopping or cleaning my house — checking it,” she said. She doesn’t buy what the governor said, that the drones aren’t a risk to public safety. Murphy told Biden on Friday that residents need answers. The federal Homeland Security Department and FBI also said in a joint statement they have no evidence that the sightings pose “a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus.” “How can you say it’s not posing a threat if you don’t know what it is?” she said. “I think that’s why so many people are uneasy.” Then there’s the notion that people could misunderstand what they’re seeing. William Austin is the president of Warren County Community College, which has a drone technology degree program, and is coincidentally located in one of the sighting hotspots. Austin says he has looked at videos of purported drones and that airplanes are being misidentified as drones. He cited an optical effect called parallax, which is the apparent shift of an object when viewed from different perspectives. Austin encouraged people to download flight and drone tracker apps so they can better understand what they’re looking at. Nonetheless, people continue to come up with their own theories. “It represents the United States of America in 2024,” Austin said. “We’ve lost trust in our institutions, and we need it.” Federal officials echo Austin’s view that many of the sightings are piloted aircraft such as planes and helicopters being mistaken for drones, according to lawmakers and Murphy. That’s not really convincing for many, though, who are homing in on the sightings beyond just New Jersey and the East Coast, where others have reported seeing the objects. For Seph Divine, 34, another member of the drone hunting group who lives in Eugene, Oregon, it feels as if it’s up to citizen sleuths to solve the mystery. He said he tries to be a voice of reason, encouraging people to fact check their information, while also asking probing questions. “My main goal is I don’t want people to be caught up in the hysteria and I also want people to not just ignore it at the same time,” he said. “Whether or not it’s foreign military or some secret access program or something otherworldly, whatever it is, all I’m saying is it’s alarming that this is happening so suddenly and so consistently for hours at a time,” he added. Media reports say President Biden is about to issue a slew of blanket pre-emptive pardons for people associated with his administration to thwart any "revenge" the incoming Trump administration might take against them. While the Founders intended presidential power to be nearly unlimited (there is an exception for a president who has been impeached), their intent was quite different from its use by modern presidents. Colleen Shogan of the Rubenstein Center has written: "While the pardon power is robust, there are ... important limitations," among them is that "a crime must have been committed for a pardon to be issued." If reports are true, President Biden will ignore that limitation and pardon people who have not been indicted, convicted or sentenced for any illegal acts. Biden has ignored other laws (open borders and student loan forgiveness nixed by the Supreme Court are only two examples), so what is to restrain him from bypassing constitutional mandates should he decide to do so in the matter of pardons? Will these rumored pardons resemble the one he gave to his son, Hunter, protecting him from past, present and future violations of the law, or will they be only issued for those favored by the president who have been criticized by Donald Trump? Either way those pardons would violate the text of the Constitution. The most prominent people about whom speculation has swirled as possible beneficiaries of presidential pardons include Sen.-elect Adam Schiff (D-CA), who was a constant thorn in Trump's side when he was a member of the January 6 Committee, former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), ditto, and former White House chief medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci. In a 500-plus page report by a House committee, many of Dr. Fauci's statements during the Covid-19 pandemic were found to have been wrong and/or unnecessary to contain the spread of the virus. Asked about the possibility of pre-emptive pardons, Schiff told CBS News: "I think this is frankly so implausible as not to be worthy of much consideration. I would urge the president not to do that. I think it would seem defensive and unnecessary." He's right. The most famous pardon of modern presidents was the one given to Richard Nixon by Gerald Ford, after Nixon left office, but before he could be impeached for his role in the Watergate affair. Nixon pardoned Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa, who served only five years of a 13-year sentence for jury tampering, attempted bribery, conspiracy and mail and wire fraud. Bill Clinton pardoned his brother, Roger, but he had already served an entire prison sentence a decade earlier. Clinton also issued a pardon to Hillary's brother, Hugh Rodham, who represented Roger. Among the most publicized pardons was the one Clinton gave to fugitive commodities trader Marc Rich. Rich's ex-wife, Denise, had been a major donor to the Democratic National Committee, Hillary Clinton's campaign and the Clinton library foundation. In all, Bill Clinton issued 456 pardons and clemencies, including to some not convicted of any crime. The way to fix inequities in the nearly unrestricted power of a president to pardon anyone for nearly any reason is for Congress to pass a constitutional amendment. Sadly, that is unlikely to happen. If Biden issues pre-emptive pardons it can only add to the public's disapproval of his administration, as expressed by a majority of voters in last month's election. A poll conducted for the Daily Mail of 1,006 registered U.S. voters asked them to rank the nine elected presidents from the last 55 years in order from best to worst. Biden came in last. Even Clinton pollster James Carville has called Biden "The most tragic figure in American politics in my lifetime." If William Shakespeare were alive no better topic for a tragedy could be found than this president. History won't be able to grant him a pardon.A Romanian hard-right NATO critic and leftist Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu are neck and neck after the first round of presidential elections, in a shock result threatening Romania's staunchly pro-Ukraine stance. or signup to continue reading After nearly 90 per cent of votes were counted, Calin Georgescu, 62, was at 22 per cent, while Ciolacu had 21.7 per cent. However, ballots from the sizeable Romanian diaspora, which are not included in the main tally on Sunday, show centre-right politician, Elena Lasconi, 52, first with 33.4 per cent and Georgescu second. Romania's president has a semi-executive role with control over defence spending - likely to be a difficult issue as Bucharest comes under pressure to uphold NATO spending goals during Donald Trump's second term as US president while trying to reduce a heavy deficit. Lasconi told supporters after exit polls were released giving her a small lead over Georgescu, with Ciolacu in first place, that she was optimistic about making the runoff. "But as you can see, the results are very tight, let us wait until tomorrow's results to rejoice." Campaigning focused largely on the soaring cost of living, with Romania having the EU's biggest share of people at risk of poverty. Georgescu is a former prominent member of the hard-right Alliance for Uniting Romanians party. In 2021 he has called NATO's ballistic missile defence shield in the Romanian town of Deveselu a "shame of diplomacy" and said the North Atlantic alliance will not protect any of its members should they be attacked by Russia. Lasconi, a former journalist, joined the Save Romania Union in 2018 and became party head this year. She believes in raising defence spending and helping Ukraine, and surveys suggest she would beat Ciolacu in a runoff. Romania shares a 650km border with Ukraine and since Russia attacked Kyiv in 2022, it has enabled the export of millions of tonnes of grain through its Black Sea port of Constanta and provided military aid, including the donation of a Patriot air defence battery. "It will be a tight run-off, with the Social Democrat leader more vulnerable to negative campaigning due to him being an incumbent PM," political commentator Radu Magdin said. LAS VEGAS — Players Era Festival organizers have done what so many other have tried — bet their fortunes in this city that a big payoff is coming. Such bet are usually bad ones, which is why so many massive casino-resorts have been built on Las Vegas Boulevard. But it doesn't mean the organizers are wrong. They're counting on the minimum of $1 million in guaranteed name, image and likeness money that will go to each of the eight teams competing in the neutral-site tournament that begins Tuesday will create a precedent for other such events. EverWonder Studios CEO Ian Orefice, who co-founded Players with former AND1 CEO Seth Berger, compared this event to last year's inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament that played its semifinals and final in Las Vegas by saying it "did really well to reinvigorate the fan base at the beginning of the year." "We're excited that we're able to really change the paradigm in college basketball on the economics," Orefice said. "But for us, it's about the long term. How do we use the momentum that is launching with the 2024 Players Era Festival and be the catalyst not to change one event, but to change college basketball for the future." Orefice and Berger didn't disclose financial details, but said the event will come close to breaking even this year and that revenue is in eight figures. Orefice said the bulk of the revenue will come from relationships with MGM, TNT Sports and Publicis Sport & Entertainment as well as sponsors that will be announced later. Both organizers said they are so bullish on the tournament's prospects that they already are planning ahead. Money made from this year's event, Orefice said, goes right back into the company. "We're really in this for the long haul," Orefice said. "So we're not looking at it on a one-year basis." Rick Giles is president of the Gazelle Group, which also operates several similar events, including the College Basketball Invitational. He was skeptical the financial numbers would work. Giles said in addition to more than $8 million going to the players, there were other expenses such as the guarantees to the teams. He said he didn't know if the tournament would make up the difference with ticket sales, broadcast rights and sponsorship money. The top bowl of the MGM Grand Garden Arena will be curtained off. "The math is highly challenging," Giles said. "Attendance and ticket revenues are not going to come anywhere close to covering that. They haven't announced any sponsors that I'm aware of. So it all sort of rests with their media deal with Turner and how much capital they want to commit to it to get these players paid." David Carter, a University of Southern California adjunct professor who also runs the Sports Business Group consultancy, said even if the Players isn't a financial success this year, the question is whether there will be enough interest to move forward. "If there is bandwidth for another tournament and if the TV or the streaming ratings are going to be there and people are going to want to attend and companies are going to want to sponsor, then, yeah, it's probably going to work," Carter said. "But it may take them time to gain that traction." Both founders said they initially were met with skepticism about putting together such an event, especially from teams they were interested in inviting. Houston was the first school to commit, first offering an oral pledge early in the year and then signing a contract in April. That created momentum for others to join, and including the No. 6 Cougars, half the field is ranked. "We have the relationships to operate a great event," Berger said. "We had to get coaches over those hurdles, and once they knew that we were real, schools got on board really quickly." The founders worked with the NCAA to make sure the tournament abided by that organization's rules, so players must appear at ancillary events in order to receive NIL money. Strict pay for play is not allowed, though there are incentives for performance. The champion, for example, will receive $1.5 million in NIL money. Now the pressure is on to pull off the event and not create the kind of headlines that can dog it for years to come. "I think everybody in the marketplace is watching what's going to happen (this) week and, more importantly, what happens afterwards," Giles said. "Do the players get paid on a timely basis? And if they do, that means that Turner or somebody has paid way more than the market dictates? And the question will be: Can that continue?" P Get local news delivered to your inbox!

What The Emerging AI Aesthetic In Film Says About UsSouth Koreans remain deeply disturbed by what President Yoon Suk Yeol did to the nation this week. His misguided and perplexing declaration of the short-lived martial law has caused a whirlwind of outrage, confusion and conflict. Why and how he managed to do something so erratic is not yet clear; what’s certain, however, is that he has touched off a sweeping firestorm of embarrassment across Korean society. The most immediate and widely expected consequence of the martial law decree is a political showdown over the opposition party-led impeachment motion against him. The main opposition Democratic Party of Korea said it would push for a vote Saturday for an impeachment motion against Yoon over his aborted martial law declaration that shocked the entire nation and the world. The Democratic Party and Yoon's detractors are now trying to remove him from the presidency, but the outlook for impeachment remains uncertain as Han Dong-hoon, leader of the ruling People Power Party, said Thursday he will work hard with his party to block the motion's passage. Han said his decision was not to defend Yoon’s “unconstitutional martial law” but to prevent a chaotic situation that could hurt the public. Han’s stated position heralds a rocky path for the impeachment motion since it requires a two-thirds majority to pass parliament. Of the 300-member National Assembly, the opposition bloc needs at least eight votes from the ruling party to pass the bill. The contrasting stance of the rival parties over the need for impeachment is expected to further deepen the level of conflict in the country’s political circles. Adding to the political tension, the opposition-controlled National Assembly on Thursday passed impeachment motions against Board of Audit and Inspection Chair Choe Jae-hae and three top prosecutors over their roles in the relocation of the presidential office and issues involving first lady Kim Keon Hee. Yoon’s martial law decree also put Korea’s financial and business sectors on edge. On Wednesday, foreign investors dumped stocks valued at 600 billion won ($423 million) and the Korean currency plunged to a two-year low against the US dollar at one point before regaining some of its value thanks to a pledge by the financial authorities to supply liquidity. Experts noted that markets are now in a better condition than expected, but if political turmoil continues and uncertainty about the government’s economic policy increases, the overall credit rating of the Korean economy could suffer a setback. International credit rating agencies like S&P have given high marks to Korea’s reliable and consistent policies. But Korea’s political risks, globally exposed by Yoon's abrupt martial law declaration, are feared to undermine the country's sovereign ratings among foreign investors. As for relations with the US and other neighboring countries, there is no doubt that Yoon’s martial law declaration has generated negative reactions. For instance, Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said the US was watching the development with “grave concern.” Diplomatic events involving the US, Japan and other countries are being delayed or canceled, reflecting heightened political and social tensions in Korea. It is deeply regrettable that Yoon has complicated Korea’s political situation and dragged down its international stature overnight. More worrisome is that the negative impact could last longer than expected, spilling into other sectors -- a sorry development that the government must prevent with all resources and measures available.
