But property, jewellery and defunct titles are still high-stakes enough for vicious skirmishes. Why? Because royals are families too, and like any other brood with something to fight over, they do. History could be seen as a long scroll of familial love and hate – from the pharaohs to the Tudors, the Habsburgs or Pahlavis and Romanovs, the fate of great cities and empires and even religions has been entwined with family politics. In India, the golden age of miscellaneous maharajahs was between the 18th and 20th centuries after Mughal power waned. They collaborated with Brits in a two-tier ruling class. Some were extractive, some have been portrayed as benefactors, or modernisers. But like anyone else, they fought and made peace with their circumstances. When India moved from Raj to republic, they had to merge with the Union. In 1971, they lost their titles and fabulous privy purses. Some royals have converted their feudal charisma into electoral capital. Some have turned their palaces into heritage hospitality. Some are aristocratic influencers, selling visions of the high life. Everywhere in the democratic world, former royals are a faded reminder of bygone days, and fodder for gossip. In the constitutional monarchies of Britain, Holland and northern Europe, they have apolitical, ceremonial roles rather than sovereign aura. Their public work may be duty and drudgery, but their escapades, affairs and tiffs are of consuming interest to much of the public. Something lingers from the old days, where the king could be a sacred figure or a scapegoat. And even today, whether you love them or they raise your republican hackles, royals certainly make a spectacle. And even in a democracy, where we are counted in our numbers rather than weighed by rank, we’re still riveted by palace entertainment. But the Navy could take victory from the jaws of defeat here, and get some utility out of (the ships) by making them into a hypersonic platform,” said Bryan Clark, a defence analyst at the Hudson Institute. The US has had several types of hypersonic weapons in development for the past two decades, but recent tests by both Russia and China have added pressure to the US military to hasten their production. Hypersonic weapons travel beyond Mach 5, five times the speed of sound, with added manoeuvrability making them harder to shoot down. Last year, The Washington Post newspaper reported that among the documents leaked by former Massachusetts Air National Guard member Jack Teixeira was a defence department briefing that confirmed China had recently tested an intermediate-range hypersonic weapon called the DF-27. While the Pentagon had previously acknowledged the weapon’s development, it had not recognised its testing. One of the US programmes in development and planned for the Zumwalt is the Conventional Prompt Strike. It would launch like a ballistic missile and then release a hypersonic glide vehicle that would travel at speeds seven to eight times faster than the speed of sound before hitting the target. The weapon system is being developed jointly by the Navy and Army. Each of the three Zumwalt-class destroyers would be equipped with four missile tubes, each with three of the missiles for a total of 12 hypersonic weapons per ship. In choosing the Zumwalt, the Navy is attempting to add to the usefulness of a 7.5 billion US dollars (£5.9 billion) warship that is considered by critics to be an expensive mistake despite serving as a test platform for multiple innovations. The Zumwalt was envisioned as providing land-attack capability with an advanced gun system with rocket-assisted projectiles to open the way for Marines to charge ashore. But the system featuring 155mm guns hidden in stealthy turrets was cancelled because each of the rocket-assisted projectiles cost up to one million dollars (£790,000). Despite the stain on their reputation, the three Zumwalt-class destroyers: Zumwalt, Michael Monsoor and Lyndon B Johnson; remain the Navy’s most advanced surface warships in terms of new technologies. Those innovations include electric propulsion, an angular shape to minimise radar signature, an unconventional wave-piercing hull, automated fire and damage control and a composite deckhouse that hides radar and other sensors. The US is accelerating development because hypersonics have been identified as vital to US national security with “survivable and lethal capabilities”, said James Weber, principal director for hypersonics in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Critical Technologies. “Fielding new capabilities that are based on hypersonic technologies is a priority for the defence department to sustain and strengthen our integrated deterrence, and to build enduring advantages,” he said.

Whether at a restaurant or in a shopping mall or even on the way from home to school and vice versa, the smartphone is often the ‘companion’ of the little ones. The Internet, unarguably, offers vast benefits to users; however, for children, parental guidance is essential to ensure that they use their devices appropriately and only as needed. To borrow a quote by Norwegian historian and educator Christian Lous Lange: “Technology is a useful servant, but a dangerous master.” In reality, technological advancements like the Internet and digital networking platforms are not inherently harmful. Rather, it is the users’ inability to manage social media effectively that often leads to psychological stress, emotional disturbances and challenges in communication and social relationships. Is YouTube replacing parents? Commenting on this, SEGi University’s child psychologist Prof Datin Dr Mariani Md Nor, who is also Early Childhood Care and Education Council Malaysia president, says in (American psychologist Uries) Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory (1977), interactions between children and their environment can influence their development and growth processes. In this context, any information or knowledge from the environment shapes a child’s mind and personality. “The influence comes not only from authentic aspects (real life), but also from cyberspace, including social media, which serves as a platform for children to gain knowledge and skills, and emulate the behaviours of their role models. “(Hence) there should be monitoring of the websites they visit or read and the language they use in online conversations. This is because whatever they see, hear and read, especially in the form of words or screenplay like that of cartoons or children’s dramas, will to some extent shape their thinking and become something they would indirectly follow,” she tells Bernama in an interview. Dr Mariani says an individual’s developmental process begins at birth and goes on till adulthood. However, different experiences lead to variations in emotional and mental development, which in turn result in differences in psychological development. According to her, children aged below six are at a critical stage of their lives as this is the time when they can be easily influenced, shaped and nurtured in terms of their minds and skills because they are particularly receptive to all types of information presented to them. “If social media is constantly by the side of children in that age group, then their parents are to be blamed if platforms like YouTube and TikTok become almost like surrogate parents or teachers to their kids,” she said. Influence of cyber narratives Commenting on reports that issues such as stress, mental health problems, running away from home, and even self-harm or suicide attempts among children are often linked to the influence of the Internet and social media, Dr Mariani says these negative behaviours are often influenced by the ‘narratives’ presented on social media, which can lead children to act without considering the consequences, especially given their age and immaturity. “Here, ‘narratives’ refer to the tendency to follow or emulate behaviours seen on social media that may seem meaningful or beneficial to them. “If they don’t get the expected outcomes, it can lead to disappointment. Without relevant guidance, education and advice, children may take shortcuts to resolve their issues, sometimes in very unhealthy ways.” Dr Mariani says many negative behaviours are often influenced by the ‘narratives’ presented on social media, which can lead children to act without considering the consequences, especially given their age and immaturity. — Bernama photo Touching on the issue of cyberbullying among children, which can escalate into bigger issues affecting their psychological and mental health, Dr Mariani says it can disrupt their daily lives and thinking and affect their studies and well-being. In the context of Malaysia, known for its diverse ethnicities and languages, exposure to social media encourages the usage of a more globalised language or trends that mostly originate from Western countries. “For example, the dominance of English or the uncontrolled mixing of languages, widely referred to as ‘bahasa rojak’ (mixed language) on social media, can undermine the use of Bahasa Melayu, which is the national language. “When children gravitate more toward using English or ‘bahasa rojak’, it can impact their proficiency in Malay, especially in formal contexts. “This weakens the resilience of the national language among the younger generation, which could ultimately impact the country’s cultural and social identity,” he says, adding the freedom of expression on social media also contributes to this issue. He also observes the tendency for individuals to share opinions and disseminate inaccurate or misleading language, which can lead to misunderstandings in social communication, reducing society’s ability to think critically and accurately analyse information. “They may think that communicating with harsh language is ‘normal, cool, trendy and accepted’ in social interactions. “However, we should be concerned if children start using harsh words, insulting others or behaving disrespectfully based on what they ‘absorb’ from social media.” Sharing the findings of a 2019 study carried out by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia on language etiquette among teenagers on social media in the country, Maswanhizzly says there is a notable difference in the language used on social media compared to the daily spoken language. The study also found that 2,220 obscene words were used by 120 teenagers and women on Facebook posts, with the offensive language used by netizens from different racial backgrounds in Malaysia.
