WASHINGTON — Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said her agency will need to start taking “extraordinary measures,” or special accounting maneuvers intended to prevent the nation from hitting the debt ceiling, as early as January 14, in a letter sent to congressional leaders Friday afternoon. “Treasury expects to hit the statutory debt ceiling between January 14 and January 23,” Yellen wrote in a letter addressed to House and Senate leadership, at which point extraordinary measures would be used to prevent the government from breaching the nation’s debt ceiling — which has been suspended until Jan. 1, 2025. The department has in the past deployed what are known as “extraordinary measures” or accounting maneuvers to keep the government operating. But once those measures run out the government risks defaulting on its debt unless lawmakers and the president agree to lift the limit on the U.S. government’s ability to borrow. “I respectfully urge Congress to act to protect the full faith and credit of the United States,” she said. The news comes after President Joe Biden signed a bill into law last week that averted a government shutdown but did not include President-elect Donald Trump’s core debt demand to raise or suspend the nation’s debt limit. The bill was approved by Congress only after fierce internal debate among Republicans over how to handle Trump’s demand. “Anything else is a betrayal of our country,” Trump said in a statement. After a protracted debate in the summer of 2023 over how to fund the government, policymakers crafted the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which included suspending the nation’s $31.4 trillion borrowing authority until Jan. 1, 2025. Notably however, Yellen said, on Jan. 2 the debt is projected to temporarily decrease due to a scheduled redemption of nonmarketable securities held by a federal trust fund associated with Medicare payments. As a result, “Treasury does not expect that it will be necessary to start taking extraordinary measures on January 2 to prevent the United States from defaulting on its obligations,” she said. The federal debt currently stands at roughly $36 trillion — which ballooned across both Republican and Democratic administrations. And the spike in inflation after the coronavirus pandemic pushed up government borrowing costs such that debt service next year will exceed spending on national security. Texas A&M junior wide receiver Noah Thomas had a pair of touchdown catches in the Las Vegas Bowl, but he also couldn’t coral a perfect pass for a 13-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. An inconsistent passing attack hampered A&M throughout the season as it averaged only 210.3 yards per game to rank 13th in the Southeastern Conference and 87th in the country. A&M has worked to improve that, adding a trio of wide receivers through the transfer portal. The latest is North Carolina State’s Kevin Concepcion, who committed to the Aggies on Sunday, reported on3sports. Concepcion had 53 receptions for 460 yards (8.7) with six touchdowns this season. That was a drop off from his freshman season when he had 71 receptions for 839 yards (11.8) to be named the Atlantic Coast Conference's rookie of the year. The 5-foot-11, 189-pounder, who is from Charlotte, N.C., rushed for 356 yards on 60 carries (5.9) with two touchdowns in his two seasons with the Wolfpack. He also completed 2 of 4 passes for 45 yards with a touchdown. Concepcion joins Mississippi State’s Mario Craver and Texas Tech’s Micah Hudson, who are other wide receivers A&M has added through the transfer portal. Craver had 17 receptions for 368 yards (21.6) with three touchdowns along with three rushes for 7 yards this season. The 5-10, 170-pounder from Birmingham had a season-high five receptions against the Aggies for 42 yards and a touchdown. Craver left the game with an injury and played in only two more games, making one catch for 13 yards. Hudson, like Craver is a true freshman, had eight receptions for 123 yards (15.4) in eight games with one start as he battled injuries. The 6-foot, 190-pounder was the highest-ranked recruit signed by Tech in the internet era. The Lake Belton product was a consensus five-star recruit, ranked first in the state and the nation’s third-best receiver, Tech said on its website. The transfers join Thomas who as a junior was A&M’s leading receiver with 39 receptions for 574 yards (14.7) with eight touchdowns along with former five-star recruit Terry Bussey who had 17 receptions for 216 yards (12.7) along with 16 carries for 102 yards and two touchdowns along with seven punt returns for 37 yards and nine kickoff returns for 217 yards in his true freshman season. A&M senior wide receiver Jahdae Walker declared for the NFL Draft the day after the Las Vegas Bowl. He caught three passes for 46 yards, giving him 29 receptions for the season for 345 yards (11.9) with two touchdowns. Walker, who won the Aggie Heart Award, played his first two seasons at Grand Valley State. A&M’s seventh-ranked incoming freshman class includes TK Norman from Montgomery, Ala., and Jerome Myles from Draper, Utah. Wide receivers back from the 2024 signing class returning along with Bussey are Ashton Bethel-Roman (4 receptions-44 yards in four games), Izaiah Williams (2 receptions-22 yards in three games) and Ernest Campbell who appeared in one game with no statistics. A&M beefed up its receiver room a year ago via the portal adding Cyrus Allen (Louisiana Tech), Barber (Troy) and Jacob Bostic (Iowa). Allen had 18 receptions for 269 yards (14.9) with a touchdown. He went back in the transfer portal and has landed with Cincinnati. Bostic had only one catch for 14 yards with the Aggies and he’s headed to San Diego State. A&M is also revamping tight end for the second straight year. Tre Watson, who transferred from Fresno State a year ago, had 21 receptions for 280 yards (13.3) with a touchdown in his lone season with the Aggies. He declared for the NFL Draft a day after having three catches for 42 yards in the 35-31 loss to Southern Cal. Sophomore Theo Ohrstrom Melin is the leading receiver among the tight ends returning. He had 10 receptions for 184 yards with two scores. Sophomore Donovan Green had 22 receptions for 233 yards with two touchdowns as a true freshman in 2022, but missed last season with an injury. He returned to play in eight games this season but had no receptions. A&M has returned to the portal to beef up its tight end room, adding Auburn’s Micah Riley and Nebraska’s Nate Boerkircher for first-year offensive coordinator Collin Klein who utilized the position during his playing days as a quarterback at Kansas State and then as OC for the Wildcats for two seasons before coming to Aggieland. A&M's offense averaged only 405.8 ypg to rank 10th in the SEC and 51st in the country. The Aggies had great success running the football, averaging 195.8 ypg to rank second in the SEC and 26th in the country. A&M was able to do that despite having sophomore running back Rueben Owens injured in fall camp and then running back Le’Veon Moss was lost for the season with an injury at South Carolina. Moss had 765 yards rushing with 10 touchdowns and was headed to being a consensus All-SEC pick. Moss and fellow junior running back Amari Daniels (661 yards rushing, 8 TDs) who missed the Vegas Bowl with an injury, are returning along with six offensive linemen who have all started at least 11 games. A&M is hopeful they'll be able to help beef up its passing attack through the portal.
An eight-year-old boy from Charters Towers has become the first child in Queensland to undergo robotic-assisted surgery. Kruze Bott suffered from stomach pain for weeks that would come and go, before an ultrasound revealed one kidney was twice the size of the other. Doctors then discovered he had two ureteropelvic junction obstructions, which stopped urine flowing to his bladder. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today “Kruze had a blockage of the plumbing system of his kidney,” Mater Private Hospital urologist, Dr Janani Krishnan told 7NEWS. “He had blood vessels crossing the plumbing system, which caused a blockage from the outside, plus he had a blockage on the inside.” She said without intervention the blockages could lead to urinary tract infections and irreversible kidney damage. Kruze was originally due to undergo open surgery, which would have meant a long recovery and a big scar for an active little boy, which his mother, Jade Bott, wasn’t keen on. After being referred to Dr Krishnan, the family was excited to learn the eight-year-old was the perfect candidate for a robotic-assisted pyeloplasty. “She rang and said, ‘Hey there’s a new surgery, can we give it a go on Kruze?” Bott said. “We were thrilled for the opportunity for him to have it.” But while his mother was excited, Kruze admits he was nervous. Paediatric robotic-assisted surgery is performed all over the world in large numbers, but only one had been performed in Australia before this and none in Queensland. The $3.3 million da Vinci XI surgical system was purchased in 2021 by the Mater Foundation, using funds donated by Queenslanders. While almost 1,000 public and private adult patients have undergone surgery using the technology, in a partnership between Mater and Townsville University Hospital, extensive approvals were needed before children could undergo robotic surgery. With support from Cairns Urologist Dr Stefan Antoniou, Dr Krishnan removed the blockage and fixed the ‘plumbing’ of Kruze’s kidneys by taking healthy parts of the ureters and putting them together. She said the robot has better magnification than a laparoscope and she was able to perform the fine suturing required for a pyeloplasty with extreme precision. “He had minimal scarring,” Bott said. “He was up and out of hospital the next day, and a couple of days later you couldn’t even tell he had surgery.” Now fully recovered, Kruze has four small scars and said he was thankful to the doctors and the game-changing surgical technology. “I definitely wouldn’t be able to ride a bike, climb a tree, or swing on rope (if I’d had open surgery).” Dr Krishnan is now eager to set up a curriculum for paediatric robotics across Australia, as a blueprint for other centres to follow. “He was the perfect case and what made it even more so perfect was Jade, his mum, was extremely keen, extremely supportive of this,” she said. “To see him come this far, I’m very grateful that his body has done magic to heal himself well.”None
