Login or signup to continue reading At the start of December, Justin Tatum stated that his Illawarra Hawks could win their four upcoming challenging games against the Perth Wildcats, Melbourne United, Perth and Sydney Kings. On Friday night, the Hawks made it two from two after a breakthrough win over United in Melbourne. The Hawks' 106-93 win at John Cain Arena improved their win/loss record to a league-leading 10-5. As importantly, the performance showed Tatum's team was the real deal and a genuine championship contender. The Hawks' coach was also happy to pick up just his second win over United in nine outings in Melbourne. But Tatum said the round 12 win wasn't a top-tier win as United were missing key players Chris Goulding and Rob Lee. He was, however, happy to see his team play well for four quarters and fight through adversity. "I'm happy how they trusted each other out there. I'm happy how they encouraged each other not to get caught up in anything and just worry about the game. So I was proud of the growth of my group," Tatum said. 'It's a tough place to play. We have not had so much success since I've been the head coach here, but this is not playoffs; this is regular season for us to get better, so I don't really put it as a top-tier win; it's just something to help us grow as a group." Hawks' co-captain Sam Froling was fantastic for Tatum's team, finishing with a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds. In his previous six outings against United, Froling averaged 18 points on 71.9 per cent shooting. Asked why he always did well against United, Froling praised his long-time partner in crime, Tyler Harvey, who also had a big game, contributing 31 points, seven rebounds and four assists, for freeing him up to shine. "It's the beauty of having Tyler on this team. So much focus goes to him, Trey, now, we've got shooters everywhere. They back their bigs in a one-on-one matchup, and I back myself in that matchup, and it tends to work," he said. "The first three minutes, we didn't get some great shots, and I told the guys, to Tyler, get me one, and he straight in. "I think it's a good outlet when we're not getting great shots; you can roll it in. I think I'm smart enough to make the right play and get us a good shot. And many of those shots in the third quarter were me going up low; there was no help. "That's why we have so many good shooters." Froling added the Hawks took a lot of confidence out of beating United convincingly and leapfrogging them to the top of the table. "We come into this game confident with a good game plan. We backed ourselves, and everyone was talking about the record, and we pushed that to the side. This is another game, a team we can beat, and we went out there and executed the game plan and got that." Tatum added that the Hawks weren't overly concerned with recognition and were focused on gaining as many wins as possible. "I think winning speaks for everything, speaks volumes. I think the more games we can win, the more respect we'll get. "We haven't been at the top of the echelon in the league for a while. And so what we're doing is probably surprising the league, but every day, we come to practice and work, and we're not surprising ourselves; we're trying to get to the point where we see our potential together. "We are just going to keep winning." The Hawks' next chance to win is against the Perth Wildcats in Wollongong on Sunday, December 22. Wollongong born and bred. Sheriff’s Office earns prestigious accreditationCalifornia Gov. Gavin Newsom is asking the state legislature to allocate $25 million so that the California Department of Justice will have the money necessary “to defend California from unconstitutional overreach.” Short of making Kamala Harris attorney general again, this is about the dumbest thing our DOJ could do. Which, according to my Newsom-to-English decoder ring, translates as follows: taxpayer money for nuisance lawsuits against the Trump administration with the sole intention of generating publicity for...Gavin Newsom. Clearly, we’re well into the next phase of his ‘I’m not running for president’ ruse. Next, an exploratory committee to consider the various reasons Newsom doesn’t plan to run for president. Then, an eye job or maybe a super-sized helping of Botox. Great. The state is going broke and Newsom wants to spend millions battling Trump. Meantime, California Attorney General and wannabe governor Rob Bonta says that $25 million may not even be enough for his office. At a Sacramento press conference Bonta called the sum “a down payment” and “a beginning not the end...We believe we will need to use all of it.” Boy, the way this guy Bonta throws other people’s money around – maybe he should be in the House of Representatives. Bonta is like one of those creepy slip-and-fall trial attorneys who specializes in shaking down the guys with the deepest pockets. I’m waiting to see a sleazy billboard alongside the 110 freeway in downtown LA. Maybe some bus stop benches with his menacing mug! This wouldn’t be the first time California Democrats have called a play from this playbook. In President Trump’s first term, then California Attorney General and current Secretary of Health and Human Services, Xavier Becerra, spent about $42 million over four years suing the federal government. Back to the present, right after Newsom and Bonta threatened to sue the Trump administration 15 ways from Sunday, they turned around and asked the federal government for billions of dollars to pay for the 2028 Summer Olympics! Talk about going for the gold! That had to make for some awkward exchanges down at the courthouse. “Okay, if everyone suing President Trump could form a line here, and everybody asking President Trump for a hand-out could form a line here...” Side note: why would you sue somebody on one hand and then ask them for a hand-OUT with the other? If there’s one thing us Hollywood folks can’t stand, it’s being two-faced. Last month, the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority board wrote President-elect Trump a letter requesting $3.2 billion to improve public transportation for the 2028 Summer Games, calling the next Olympics to be held in the United States “the largest and most spectacular sporting event held in American history.” Which I think would come as something of a surprise to the producers of the next WWE pay per view. Isn’t it interesting that California has plenty of money for performative lawsuits against the incoming Trump administration before anyone has even been sworn into office and done anything, but not enough money to get ready for the Olympics – which we were awarded back in 2017! What’s great about these stories is that they perfectly illustrate why government in California is in the pathetic state that it’s in: Our dearly elected leaders are primarily interested in political theatrics that generate celebrity and attention for themselves, at the same time that they have no interest in carrying out the basic duties of government that they were elected to perform. All gesture and no substance. That’s the Newsom way. Sorry, Gavin. This time you’re going to have to settle for the bronze. John Phillips can be heard weekdays from noon to 3 p.m. on “The John Phillips Show” on KABC/AM 790.Morgan Rogers’ fourth goal of the season, an Ollie Watkins penalty and Matty Cash’s finish put Villa 3-0 up after 34 minutes. Mikkel Damsgaard pulled one back for Brentford in the second half but the damage had been done as Villa ended their eight-match winless run in all competitions. Emery was relieved to end the unwanted streak but quickly turned his attention to the next fixture against Southampton on Saturday. “We broke a spell of bad results we were having,” the Villa boss said. “We started the first five or 10 minutes not in control of the game but then progressively we controlled. “Today we achieved those three points and it has given us confidence again but even like that it’s not enough. We have to keep going and think about the next match against Southampton on Saturday. “The message was try to focus on each match, try to forget the table. How we can recover confidence and feel comfortable at home. Today was a fantastic match.” Tyrone Mings returned to the starting line-up in the Premier League for the first time since August 2023. Emery admitted it has been a long road back for the 31-year-old and is pleased to have him back. He added: “Mings played in the Champions league but it’s the first time in the league for a year and three months. “I think he played fantastic – he might be tired tomorrow but will be ready for Saturday again. “It was very, very long, the injury he had. His comeback is fantastic for him and everybody, for the doctor and physio and now he’s training everyday.” Brentford fell to a sixth away defeat from seven games and have picked up only a solitary point on the road this season. They have the best home record in the league, with 19 points from seven matches, but they have the joint worst away record. Bees boss Thomas Frank is confident form will improve on the road. He said: “On numbers we can’t argue we are better at home than away, but on numbers it’s a coincidence. I think two of the seven away games have been bad. “The other games we performed well in big spells. I’m confident at the end of the season we will have some wins away from home.” Frank felt Villa should not have been given a penalty when Ethan Pinnock brought Watkins down. He added: “I want to argue the penalty. I don’t think it is (one). I think Ollie kicked back and hit Ethan, yes there is an arm on the shoulder but threshold and all that – but that’s not the reason we lost.”

A prayer for our country and its peopleAppeals officer Ramon Foster has upheld the three-game suspension of Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, the league announced Wednesday. The Texans are on their off week this week, so Al-Shaair will miss games against the Dolphins, Chiefs and Ravens in Weeks 15-17. He can return for the Week 18 game against the Titans. The NFL suspended Al-Shaair on Tuesday for what the NFL called “repeated violations of rules intended to protect the health and safety of players and promote sportsmanship,” including the hit to the head of Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence that led to the linebacker’s ejection from Sunday’s game. Lawrence landed on injured reserve Wednesday with a concussion, likely ending his season. Al-Shaair has paid two fines this season. The league docked him $11,817 for punching Bears running back Roschon Johnson in Week 2 when Johnson thought Al-Shaair’s hit on Caleb Williams along the sideline was unnecessary, and Al-Shaair lost $11,255 for a hit out of bounds on Titans running back Tony Pollard in Week 12. The suspension will cost Al-Shaair three game checks of $112,745 each, totaling $338,235.The 2024 Understanding China Conference (Guangzhou) Held Successfully

In Cork East, councillor Liam Quaide is in a tight race with Sinn Féin’s Pat Buckley, behind Fianna Fáil’s James O’Connor and Fine Gael’s Mark Staunton. One constituency to watch is the highly competitive Dublin Central constituency, where TD Gary Gannon is in the running on 13.2%, behind Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald and Fine Gael’s Paschal Donohoe.
