MIAMI — Traffic citations issued to Miami Dolphins star wide receiver Tyreek Hill after a September altercation with police were dismissed after the charging officers didn’t attend a court hearing. Hill’s tickets for careless driving and failing to wear a seat belt were dismissed after the Miami-Dade Police officers failed to show up for a Monday hearing. The tickets were issued after Hill was stopped outside Hard Rock Stadium for allegedly speeding before the Dolphins’ season opener Sept. 8. The stop escalated, and an officer pulled Hill from the car, forced him to the ground and handcuffed him. Hill said in a Tuesday post on the social platform X, “Where all the internet cops now”. The Miami-Dade Police said the officers’ failure to appear was “an oversight” and “the matter will be handled administratively.” Still, the department defended issuing Hill the tickets. “A citation dismissed due to this reason does not indicate that the citation held no merit,” the agency said in a statement. Police body camera video from the September stop showed Hill appeared to speed past two motorcycle officers who were monitoring traffic on a road outside the stadium. They pulled over his McLaren sports car and one tapped on his window. Hill, 30, handed the officer his driver’s license, but told the officer repeatedly, “Don’t knock on my window like that.” He then put his window back up. In the northern French city of Reims, the construction of a new house has brought an ancient home to the surface. Archaeologists discovered a domus, or luxury urban house , dating to the second century during housing construction along the Rue de la Magdeleine, according to a Dec. 4 news release from the National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research. Once inhabited by the Gallic tribe of the Remi , Reims was conquered by the Romans and grew into an urban center. The city was developed in the classic Roman urban planning style, archaeologists said, in which residential blocks form a grid of perpendicular streets around a city center, designed as a political and religious forum. In many cases, the outside districts are far less studied than the central areas, researchers said. The newly discovered dwelling, with a two-pillar facade facing the street, is two-thirds of a mile away from where the city center once stood. But this wasn’t just any common Roman’s home. This home was occupied by the elite. The inside of the house was buried under a destroyed layer that was likely caused by a fire, archaeologists said. In the mains, pieces of a megalography fresco were found. Megalography means the figures painted on the surface are represented in their real size, researchers said. Two fresco pieces have the painted names Achilles and Deidamia, referencing the mythological scene of Achilles on Skyros, a coveted pre-Trojan War episode, archaeologists said. The wealthiest and whitest groups were "devoted conservatives" (6%) and "progressive activists" (8%). These tribes dominate the media, the parties and higher education, and they dictate the competing narratives of red vs. blue, particularly on cable news and social media. Meanwhile, the overwhelming majority of Americans resided in, or were adjacent to, the "exhausted majority." These people, however, "have no narrative," as David Brooks wrote at the time. "They have no coherent philosophic worldview to organize their thinking and compel action." Lacking a narrative might seem like a very postmodern problem, but in a postmodern elite culture, postmodern problems are real problems. It's worth noting that red vs. blue America didn't emerge ex nihilo. The 1990s were a time when the economy and government seemed to be working, at home and abroad. As a result, elites leaned into the narcissism of small differences to gain political and cultural advantage. They remain obsessed with competing, often apocalyptic, narratives. That leaves out most Americans. The gladiatorial combatants of cable news, editorial pages and academia, and their superfan spectators, can afford these fights. Members of the exhausted majority are more interested in mere competence. I think that's the hidden unity elites are missing. This is why we keep throwing incumbent parties out of power: They get elected promising competence but get derailed -- or seduced -- by fan service to, or trolling of, the elites who dominate the national conversation. There's a difference between competence and expertise. One of the most profound political changes in recent years has been the separation of notions of credentialed expertise from real-world competence. This isn't a new theme in American life, but the pandemic and the lurch toward identity politics amplified distrust of experts in unprecedented ways. This is a particular problem for the left because it is far more invested in credentialism than the right. Indeed, some progressives are suddenly realizing they invested too much in the authority of experts and too little in the ability of experts to provide what people want from government, such as affordable housing, decent education and low crime. The New York Times' Ezra Klein says he's tired of defending the authority of government institutions. Rather, "I want them to work." One of the reasons progressives find Trump so offensive is his absolute inability to speak the language of expertise -- which is full of coded elite shibboleths. But Trump veritably shouts the language of competence. I don't mean he is actually competent at governing. But he is effectively blunt about calling leaders, experts and elites -- of both parties -- stupid, ineffective, weak and incompetent. He lost in 2020 because voters didn't believe he was actually good at governing. He won in 2024 because the exhausted majority concluded the Biden administration was bad at it. Nostalgia for the low-inflation pre-pandemic economy was enough to convince voters that Trumpian drama is the tolerable price to pay for a good economy. About 3 out of 4 Americans who experienced "severe hardship" because of inflation voted for Trump. The genius of Trump's most effective ad -- "Kamala is for they/them, President Trump is for you" -- was that it was simultaneously culture-war red meat and an argument that Harris was more concerned about boutique elite concerns than everyday ones. If Trump can actually deliver competent government, he could make the Republican Party the majority party for a generation. For myriad reasons, that's an if so big it's visible from space. Woodstock City Council has endorsed a proposal by Mayor Jerry Acchione to create a new shelter for those currently living on Woodstock streets and in encampments. The so-called homelessness service centre would be paid for by a recent cash windfall from the province. Woodstock resident Andrew Blackmore said it can’t happen soon enough. “We have a lot of homeless here in Woodstock and the surrounding area that don’t have a place to go, and they just take over everything,” commented Blackmore. Woodstock is receiving $1.99 million from the province’s Building Faster Fund after exceeding its target for housing starts in 2023. The money would be used to buy property for the service centre, explained Mayor Acchione. “What I envision is a low barrier shelter system that accepts couples, maybe has a storage spot for stuff that they’re collecting. Somewhere they can go, stay an entire day and night,” he said. It’s a model the mayor said is not practical. “They have to be out first thing in the morning, so there’s that quick, ‘you gotta pack up and go again,’” he said. Woodstock council’s vote on the mayor’s proposal came in at 4-3. Among those opposed, Councillor Mark Schadenberg, who said the money could be better spent on infrastructure projects. “Only so much money to spend out there, and to earmark 1.99 million to a homelessness project that doesn’t have a plan - there’s no building purchase, there’s no land purchase. What it is, is a good idea that has no backing behind it, no structure or framework to it,” said Schadenberg. The proposed service centre would be created in partnership with Oxford County. County council still has to sign off on the arrangement. County Council will consider a notice of motion from the mayor on Wednesday. In the meantime, Woodstock has a deadline of March 2026 to spend the provincial funding, which can only be used for housing related projects. “We’re taking resources, and we’re taking it away from other things to try to clean up encampments, and just keep throwing band aids on something. Payments technology provider Dojo reportedly has signed a new agreement with American Express that will help Dojo’s small business customers in the United Kingdom accept American Express payments with one unified contract. With this agreement, the small businesses will see a consolidated statement for transaction reconciliation, a unified settlement process, streamlined onboarding and a single point of contact for servicing, Fintech Finance News reported Thursday (Dec. 5). “We want to make life easier for our customers while giving them time back to focus on what matters — running their business and delivering a fantastic customer experience,” Dojo Vice President of Payment Nuno Mateus said in the report. Daniel Edelman , general manager, merchant services at American Express, said in the report: “As we look to continue our coverage growth momentum, this new strategic agreement will enable yet more businesses across the U.K. to benefit from the spending power of Amex Cardholders.” American Express announced some other partnerships in the U.K. earlier this year. In October, the company teamed up with Revolut Business to enable that company’s merchants in the U.K. to accept American Express payments. The collaboration allows Revolut to enable its merchants to access a previously untapped pool of premium customers and helps American Express expand its merchant network in the U.K., Revolut said at the time in a press release. The addition of American Express brought to seven the number of payment methods that Revolut Business enables merchants to accept at their checkout. In March, American Express partnered with Ryft , a payment platform for marketplaces and digital platforms, to enable that company’s merchants in the U.K. to accept payments from American Express cards . U R Pradeep secured 64,259 votes, defeating his closest rival Remya Haridas of the Congress led UDF , by a margin of 12,201 votes. The Congress candidate garnered 52,137 votes. The BJP candidate, K Balakrishnan, also had a strong showing, securing 33,354 votes. The BJP increased its vote share by 9309 votes compared to 2021 assembly elections. Although the Left's victory margin decreased by 27,199 votes compared to the 2021 assembly elections, the Left leadership maintained that the victory confirmed the absence of any anti-incumbency sentiment. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated that the victory in Chelakkara will bolster the popular support and approval of the LDF government. "The people have delivered a resounding victory to the Left Democratic Front in the Chelakkara constituency, disregarding the organized propaganda and attacks," he said. He said the LDF secured a secular vote against all forms of communalism. The election results send a clear message about the necessity to confront communalism and maintain secular politics uncompromisingly. Pinarayi indicated that the election outcomes demonstrate that the anti-incumbency campaign did not sway the electorate in the least. In Palakkad, the LDF garnered more votes than in previous elections. This mandate is expected to invigorate the continuation of development and welfare initiatives with greater vigor in the future, he said. The chief minister said although the UDF managed to hold onto Palakkad with the support of communal forces, the LDF candidate's vote count saw an increase from previous numbers. The BJP is unlikely to establish a lasting presence in Kerala. The novel is about a friend’s loving recall of a friendship formed at the college of their dreams a long time ago, a friendship that was cut short by a cruel stroke of fate. The novel transports the reader back to that past in an effort to comprehend what appeared incomprehensible to the actors themselves. A steady and unrelenting focus on the thought processes, delineated through two ‘I’ narrations, Arun’s and Rajiv’s that alternate with each other, lifts the novel from the plane of a light-hearted campus novel to a serious engagement with the labyrinthine alleyways of the mind. The verse with which the prologue opens sets the stage for the excavation of the past. Not an easy task given the failure, as the verse tells us, to see the ‘invisible me’, to hear the ‘tumult in a silent zone.’ The second metaphor is close to George Eliot’s ‘roar which lies on the other side of silence’, suggesting the rationale for the novel’s title, ‘The other side of the rainbow’. To say what cannot be said with the words that the polite society has handed to us and to peek into the abyss is the forte of three categories of truth tellers — the fictionist, the philosopher and the psychologist. But to do these two seemingly impossible tasks of speaking and looking against the grain while not abandoning the grain itself, is the province and forte of the fictionist alone. It involves the writer in fracturing syntax, in forcing words beyond and against their conventional meanings. Nayak doesn’t fracture syntax, but he does the latter in ample measure through his resort to paradox, oxymoron and conundrum. For Arun, beginning and end merge. For Rajiv, destination is not destiny. ‘Life’, said Bertrand Russell, ‘is an uneasy awakening between two sleeps.’ Arun and Rajiv, the two protagonists of Nayak’s tale and those of us who are among their auditors, would tend to agree. They themselves speak in paradoxes and conundrums. Arun and Rajiv are ordinary students who become friends during their four-year residence at Ravenshaw College. One of them – Arun, the son of a ‘pakodawala’ — comes of a dirt-poor family and the other – Rajiv – just a notch above, namely a lower middle class family. Though they share a bond, they seem headed in different, almost opposite, directions. This is thanks as much to their differing social backgrounds as to their different psychological orientations. Arun wants to flee his fatherless and shelter home-ridden past, good grades in examination his only vehicle. Rajiv wants to flee a father-dominated oppressive present, with alcohol as his prop. Arun is mother-fixated and Rajiv is caught in a bitter oedipal struggle. The fact of Arun being intellectually gifted and Rajiv being lackadaisical goes into the mix as well, making them the perfect unlike poles that attract rather than repel. The excruciating tale that the novel tells takes shape from the sweetness of their intertwined lives and the bitterness of their interrupted friendship, with two potentially romantic entanglements — Arun’s with Ruby and Rajiv’s with Saswati, threatening to derail it. Arun’s unrequited feelings for Ruby, a girl his social superior, complicates their friendship, bringing into it a deficit of trust and openness. Rajiv’s words capture the fraught relations quite well: ‘We were three hands of a queer structure that looked like a triangle that didn’t have any corner or meeting point’ (p. 173). Rajiv too cannot bring himself to love Saswati. It takes its toll on both, but more cruelly on Arun. It is painful to read the climax revealingly given the name: ‘A Tree Sheds Its Leaf.’ Does the setting of Ravenshaw College play a part in this sad human drama? Or is it only a mute backcloth? Nayak is clearly not writing a novel to document Ravewnshaw College. But his novel darkly hints at how the lives of its young population are warped by academic competitiveness and snobbery related to status. Arun’s breakdown is ultimately caused by his dark and brooding disposition. But it is exacerbated by family expectations and an uncaring environment, making for a potentially tragic tale. Rajiv survives to not only tell the story of wasted opportunities, broken dreams and shattered hopes but also to give his life some closure by revisiting Arun’s village after thirty years. His chance meeting with Saswati also helps him to heal. Thus a melancholic and disturbing tale is turned into a redemptive one of losing and finding. The novel is a gripping read. (Himansu S. A Florida man was arrested Wednesday and charged with a plot to "reboot" the U.S. government by planting a bomb at the New York Stock Exchange this week and detonating it with a remote-controlled device, according to the FBI. Harun Abdul-Malik Yener, 30, of Coral Springs, Florida, was charged with an attempt to use an explosive device to damage or destroy a building used in interstate commerce. The FBI began investigating Yener in February based on a tip that he was storing "bombmaking schematics" in a storage unit. They found bomb-making sketches, many watches with timers, electronic circuit boards and other electronics that could be used for building explosive devices, according to the FBI. He had also searched online for things related to bomb-making since 2017, according to the FBI. Yener, who was described as "unhoused," wanted to bomb the stock exchange in order to "reboot" the U.S. government, explaining that it would be "like a small nuke went off," killing everyone inside the building, according to court documents. As the dust settles from the elections in Mexico, a new set of political decisions that have transpired in constitutional amendments pose new and major challenges for local and foreign investors with current or future interest in the country. Energy and Infrastructure As announced by President Sheinbaum, specialized government agencies such as the Energy Regulatory Commission, National Hydrocarbon Commission, Antitrust Commission, and Federal Telecommunications Institute will be phased out. Investors with current projects should consider alternatives in the event their investments are affected or subject to inflexible new requirements. For foreign investors, it is worth conducting a preventive analysis of the interpretation of fair and equitable treatment (FET) under the multiple investment treaties to which Mexico is a party to since FET standards are often left undefined. Despite the differences in the wording of FET provisions across treaties, especially bilateral investment treaties, there appears to be a general consensus on the core content of the FET standards that include: (1) protection afforded to the legitimate expectations of the investor; (2) protection against arbitrary or discriminatory treatment; and (3) protection against a host state’s denial of justice to the investor. The phasing out of the specialized government agencies mentioned above does not necessarily equate to lack of new opportunities in the energy and critical infrastructure sectors.
