College Football Program Draws Embarrassing Crowd Amid Two-Win SeasonMy twin brother was diagnosed with autism at age 2. He will need assistance with things throughout his life. I know I'll have to take care of him in the future, so I worry about having kids. When my wife and I discuss , we have to be realistic that our future looks different than most people our age. We consider factors like what kind of parents we'd be, , and whether we could even support a growing family in this economy. But there's more than that for us. My twin brother, Jon, is a lot like me in many ways. He's endlessly funny, perseverant, and hardworking. If he has a goal, he will achieve it. He's passionate about his interests. I don't know anyone with such an in-depth knowledge of the Marvel universe. Jon is also autistic — he received at 2, and he's worked hard to become the person he is today. From a young age, I've known that Jon would need support throughout our lives and that someday, when our mom is gone, it'll be up to me to ensure he has the successful, happy life he deserves. Jon attends an adult day program. He can work with assistance for a limited time span and attends activities in his community with friends. In many ways, his life is much like that of any adult: He goes to work, socializes, comes home, and watches TV or reads. But he'll also always need assistance to ensure his day goes smoothly. He cannot drive or fill out important paperwork, and he might not be able to convey that something is wrong when he isn't feeling well. He needs reminders and help with day-to-day tasks, including laundry, , and cleaning. These aren't downsides to being Jon's brother. It's his reality, as it is mine. Jon will always need assistance to live his life, and I'm at peace with that, but it can be hard to explain it to other people. My wife's mom has made it clear she's hopeful for grandkids. It's not a surprise — my wife and her mom are both educators, so they're hoping for more kids to dote on. She's made subtle comments and even asked us if we'd have any use in the future for the childhood items she'd saved from my wife's younger years. We've mainly tried to deflect or avoid the conversation. The reality is that we don't have a solid answer. We've talked a lot about having kids but haven't made any decisions. — as a struggling 23-year-old, it's hard to imagine a financially stable future where I could be a good parent. But my future is also intertwined with my brother's. I don't know when I'll become Jon's caretaker — it's painful to picture a future where my mom isn't around. But I know that there will come a time when she won't be able to provide the care Jon needs. When that time comes, I'll be financially responsible for ensuring Jon can attend the program he needs and have a safe living situation. I've never held a position where I was paid more than $20 an hour. My wife is a preschool teacher. She loves her career, but neither of us is exactly rolling in dough. Planning a future for a child is out of the question unless we get into vastly better financial circumstances. We can keep our fingers crossed, but family comes first — and my brother is no exception. It took Oliver Anthony less than two weeks to go from total unknown to viral hitmaker with his controversial country screed “ Rich Men North of Richmond .” So, naturally, he has some opinions about Beyoncé. The comments were made in a 15-minute YouTube clip titled “What I’ve Learned in the Music Industry So Far...” in which Anthony rants while driving by chickens, horses, and goats. “I had a lot to get off my chest,” he writes in the caption. “Hope ya’ll like it!” Yeah, no. Roughly 10 minutes into the video, Anthony vents about the industry, claiming, “I don’t need a bunch of nerds and coffee-drinkin’ freaks in Nashville to tell me how to live my life. I guess that was my mistake for relying on those people, instead of relying on God and the people I trust.” He takes a dig at his management, who entered the picture and got rid of everyone in Anthony’s circle who believed in his vision. He says management’s one goal was to try and make him cool. “One of the guys I worked with, he wanted me to make some stupid fucking post about Beyoncé’s country album, about how it was good, even though it was complete trash,” he said. “It makes me just want to throw up.” From there, he moved onto Beyoncé’s cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” saying he couldn’t even get through the beginning of the Cowboy Carter track. “It’s just total cringe,” he said. “It represents how degenerative our society has become, that a song like a Beyoncé version of ‘Jolene’ can come out and anybody actually listen to it and think it’s not just complete fucking trash.” He continued: “So I was supposed to make a post, basically trying to associate myself with Beyoncé in hopes of us doing some kind of song together, but you know, how many people do that? How many artists do you follow on social media that have never even looked at their social media, and you’re just reading words and posts and things that were written by somebody that you’ve never even met, that aren’t the artist, that don’t even necessarily work directly for the artist ... It’s so much theatrics and illusion and characterizations that are built in this whole thing to like keep people hanging on for more. And God, if it’s that bad in music, it’s gotta be bad in everything.” The clip follows the video that Anthony posted in late October, when he claimed he was pivoting away from the music industry to focus on ministry work — though he still plans on making music. “I’m in the process of getting out of the music industry,” he said. “It’s a big joke. The plan is to eventually change my entire focus to traveling ministry work ...I just have to go at it in baby steps since it’s completely DIY.”

Minnesota will try to bounce back from two straight losses when it hosts Bethune-Cookman on Sunday afternoon in Minneapolis. The Golden Gophers (5-3) are coming off a 57-51 loss against Wake Forest on Friday, which followed a 68-66 overtime loss against Wichita State on Thursday. Both games took place at the ESPN Events Invitational in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Minnesota coach Ben Johnson cited inconsistency on offense as the main reason for his team's recent skid. "We're painfully figuring that out," Johnson said. "I thought our defense, though, (Thursday and Friday) has proven this is a top-40 or top-30 defense. We've got to be able to show up with offense and free throws." Golden Gophers starter Lu'Cye Patterson said he and his teammates remain confident in their potential as the Big Ten conference season approaches. "We just have to keep doing what we're supposed to do and keep our level of defensive play up," Patterson said. "It's going to win us a lot of games. The offense is going to come." Bethune-Cookman (2-5) will try to play spoiler on the road. The Wildcats have split their past two games as they beat North Dakota 79-67 on Tuesday and lost to Gardner-Webb 79-64 on Wednesday, both games played in the Cancun Challenge in Cancun, Mexico. Four players for Bethune-Cookman scored in double digits in their most recent game. Reggie Ward Jr. and Daniel Rouzan led the way with 14 points apiece, Trey Thomas scored 13 and Brayon Freeman chipped in 10. Bethune-Cookman is coached by Reggie Theus, who enjoyed a long NBA career and coached the Sacramento Kings for parts of two seasons. Theus said the Wildcats were in better position to compete this season compared with a season ago. "We've got a lot of depth, and we have age and experience," Theus said. "One of the biggest differences in our team is that we have great size now, where last year we were pretty small." Dawson Garcia leads Minnesota with 18.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Patterson is next with 10.1 points per contest. Bethune-Cookman is led by Freeman, who is averaging 15.9 points per game. Thomas (11.7 points per game) and Ward Jr. (11.0) also are scoring in double digits. --Field Level MediaDeep-pocketed investors have adopted a bearish approach towards Tenet Healthcare THC , and it's something market players shouldn't ignore. Maybe it’s just my nature, but I’m all about Thanksgiving. It’s a time to reflect on what we enjoy in our lives. It’s a time to appreciate the contributions that others make to our well-being. And, yes, it’s a time to give thanks for a big turkey (or faux-turkey, as the case may be) feast. John Tayer So why is there such a lump in my throat as I approach this Thanksgiving week? Last week, the Boulder Chamber hosted its first Leading Change conference in partnership with the Latino Chamber of Commerce of Boulder County and the NAACP Boulder County. It was a remarkable gathering, featuring compelling arguments regarding the business benefits of a diverse workforce and a welcoming environment for every staff member. More than ideology and inspiration, our presenters and panelists provided practical tips for achieving diversity, equity and inclusion goals. As a backdrop to the conference, though, I quoted this article from Inc. Magazine: “Many corporate diversity, equity and inclusion programs have been under fire from conservative opponents for the better part of a year, and a growing number of businesses are scaling them back in an apparent response.” In the face of such disheartening retrenchment, I offered that “DEI values remain core to the Boulder Chamber mission and, even more relevant, to our core values.” Still, the current wave of political expediency is upon us. One institution noted that they will have to change the name of their DEI programming to avoid becoming a target of threats to federal funding. They hope to stay under the radar in a hostile environment for something that is currently in the crosshairs of those who command the purse strings, regardless of the clear business benefits and moral imperative. I hear similar talk from our friends in the climate-protection and clean-energy fields. For good reason, they worry about threats to their research budgets, and so should all of us. The economic impact of that research, including spin-off technology development and business enterprises, runs in the billions of dollars for Colorado, with a significant portion of those funds invested in research and businesses in Boulder. Let’s face it, we live in a town that is as blue as it gets on the political front at a time when red blankets our nation, reflecting the balance of control in Washington. Much of our economic vitality also rests on principles that have come under attack in the platitudes of politically heated election rhetoric. The approach we tend to take toward addressing social issues also is confronting new challenges. Well, hold on. As I said in a recent BizWest story, “There’s a great distance between the political rhetoric and what ultimately is approved through the legislative process and executive decision-making.” There will be consequences of any pendulum swing, such as we may be experiencing now, but it’s also a risky proposition to run too fast in the direction of current political winds. We should also resist straying from the foundation of an economy — one built on core values — that has served us so well. This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t be thoughtful regarding alignment of our work with current national administration goals. While “climate protection” might not be de rigueur these days, there is no question that our economy depends on the projections our climate scientists are making regarding global warming impacts. The insurance industry is paying attention. But also consider those who depend on our threatened water systems. Whether in red Arizona or blue California, your pharmaceutical companies, farms and breweries need to know that water will be flowing. And then there’s diversity, equity and inclusion. How terrible to consider pulling back from the progress we’ve been fighting to make in addressing systemic racism and injustice in our nation. At the same time, in the words of my good friend and communications consultant AJ Grant, “the goals and sentiments we hope to advance often get lost and cordoned off into fraught vocabulary.” It’s important to remember the fundamental ideal of DEI is about bringing the best and brightest voices and perspectives to the table, regardless of background, and circumstance. Ultimately, Grant notes, it is simply about “caring” for one another. Who can argue with that? Yes, there is a lump in my throat when I consider possible impacts to Boulder’s economy from the recent leadership change in Washington. In truth, though, we don’t know what is rhetoric and what changes will ultimately settle across the economic landscape. Regardless, I give thanks to the core values that have been the foundation of our success ... and know our economy and community will weather those changes in the political winds. Phony reviews have long plagued many popular consumer websites, such as Amazon and Yelp. They are typically traded on private social media groups between fake review brokers and businesses willing to pay. Sometimes, such reviews are initiated by businesses that offer customers incentives such as gift cards for positive feedback. But AI-infused text generation tools, popularized by OpenAI’s ChatGPT , enable fraudsters to produce reviews faster and in greater volume, according to tech industry experts. The deceptive practice, which is illegal in the U.S. , is carried out year-round but becomes a bigger problem for consumers during the holiday shopping season , when many people rely on reviews to help them purchase gifts. Where are AI-generated reviews showing up? Fake reviews are found across a wide range of industries, from e-commerce, lodging and restaurants, to services such as home repairs, medical care and piano lessons. The Transparency Company, a tech company and watchdog group that uses software to detect fake reviews, said it started to see AI-generated reviews show up in large numbers in mid-2023 and they have multiplied ever since. For a report released this month, The Transparency Company analyzed 73 million reviews in three sectors: home, legal and medical services. Nearly 14% of the reviews were likely fake, and the company expressed a “high degree of confidence” that 2.3 million reviews were partly or entirely AI-generated. “It’s just a really, really good tool for these review scammers,” said Maury Blackman, an investor and advisor to tech startups, who reviewed The Transparency Company’s work and is set to lead the organization starting Jan. 1. In August, software company DoubleVerify said it was observing a “significant increase” in mobile phone and smart TV apps with reviews crafted by generative AI. The reviews often were used to deceive customers into installing apps that could hijack devices or run ads constantly, the company said. The following month, the Federal Trade Commission sued the company behind an AI writing tool and content generator called Rytr, accusing it of offering a service that could pollute the marketplace with fraudulent reviews. The FTC, which this year banned the sale or purchase of fake reviews, said some of Rytr’s subscribers used the tool to produce hundreds and perhaps thousands of reviews for garage door repair companies, sellers of “replica” designer handbags and other businesses. It’s likely on prominent online sites, too Max Spero, CEO of AI detection company Pangram Labs, said the software his company uses has detected with almost certainty that some AI-generated appraisals posted on Amazon bubbled up to the top of review search results because they were so detailed and appeared to be well thought-out. But determining what is fake or not can be challenging. External parties can fall short because they don’t have “access to data signals that indicate patterns of abuse,” Amazon has said. Pangram Labs has done detection for some prominent online sites, which Spero declined to name due to non-disclosure agreements. He said he evaluated Amazon and Yelp independently. Many of the AI-generated comments on Yelp appeared to be posted by individuals who were trying to publish enough reviews to earn an “Elite” badge, which is intended to let users know they should trust the content, Spero said. The badge provides access to exclusive events with local business owners. Fraudsters also want it so their Yelp profiles can look more realistic, said Kay Dean, a former federal criminal investigator who runs a watchdog group called Fake Review Watch. To be sure, just because a review is AI-generated doesn’t necessarily mean its fake. Some consumers might experiment with AI tools to generate content that reflects their genuine sentiments. Some non-native English speakers say they turn to AI to make sure they use accurate language in the reviews they write. “It can help with reviews (and) make it more informative if it comes out of good intentions,” said Michigan State University marketing professor Sherry He, who has researched fake reviews. She says tech platforms should focus on the behavioral patters of bad actors, which prominent platforms already do, instead of discouraging legitimate users from turning to AI tools. What companies are doing Prominent companies are developing policies for how AI-generated content fits into their systems for removing phony or abusive reviews. Some already employ algorithms and investigative teams to detect and take down fake reviews but are giving users some flexibility to use AI. Spokespeople for Amazon and Trustpilot, for example, said they would allow customers to post AI-assisted reviews as long as they reflect their genuine experience. Yelp has taken a more cautious approach, saying its guidelines require reviewers to write their own copy. “With the recent rise in consumer adoption of AI tools, Yelp has significantly invested in methods to better detect and mitigate such content on our platform,” the company said in a statement. The Coalition for Trusted Reviews, which Amazon, Trustpilot, employment review site Glassdoor, and travel sites Tripadvisor, Expedia and Booking.com launched last year, said that even though deceivers may put AI to illicit use, the technology also presents “an opportunity to push back against those who seek to use reviews to mislead others.” “By sharing best practice and raising standards, including developing advanced AI detection systems, we can protect consumers and maintain the integrity of online reviews,” the group said. The FTC’s rule banning fake reviews, which took effect in October, allows the agency to fine businesses and individuals who engage in the practice. Tech companies hosting such reviews are shielded from the penalty because they are not legally liable under U.S. law for the content that outsiders post on their platforms. Tech companies, including Amazon, Yelp and Google, have sued fake review brokers they accuse of peddling counterfeit reviews on their sites. The companies say their technology has blocked or removed a huge swath of suspect reviews and suspicious accounts. However, some experts say they could be doing more. “Their efforts thus far are not nearly enough,” said Dean of Fake Review Watch. “If these tech companies are so committed to eliminating review fraud on their platforms, why is it that I, one individual who works with no automation, can find hundreds or even thousands of fake reviews on any given day?” Spotting fake AI-generated reviews Consumers can try to spot fake reviews by watching out for a few possible warning signs , according to researchers. Overly enthusiastic or negative reviews are red flags. Jargon that repeats a product’s full name or model number is another potential giveaway. When it comes to AI, research conducted by Balázs Kovács, a Yale professor of organization behavior, has shown that people can’t tell the difference between AI-generated and human-written reviews. Some AI detectors may also be fooled by shorter texts, which are common in online reviews, the study said. However, there are some “AI tells” that online shoppers and service seekers should keep it mind. Panagram Labs says reviews written with AI are typically longer, highly structured and include “empty descriptors,” such as generic phrases and attributes. The writing also tends to include cliches like “the first thing that struck me” and “game-changer.”
