The opposition party said the videos of direct firing on the protesters in Sambhal depict the horrifying result of a "well-planned conspiracy" by Adityanath and the BJP-RSS. Congress' media and publicity department head Pawan Khera said Adityanath's administration has once again shown a blatant disregard for communal harmony. "In this entire matter, the BJP neither wanted the survey to proceed nor to stop it; its sole objective was to destroy harmony," he alleged. Three people were killed and scores of others, including around 20 security personnel, were injured as the protesters opposing a court-ordered survey of a Mughal-era mosque Sambhal clashed with police on Sunday. "No citizen in Uttar Pradesh is 'safe' under CM Adityanath, who gave the reprehensible slogan of 'Batenge toh Katenge'. This is evident by the highly deplorable incidents of Sambhal today," Khera said in a statement. The videos of direct firing on the protesters in Sambhal depict the horrifying result of a "well-planned conspiracy" by Adityanath and the BJP-RSS, he alleged. Western Uttar Pradesh, which has been a symbol of goodwill and harmony for years, has today witnessed three people killed and many injured under a "well-planned conspiracy", the Congress leader said. "We say with full responsibility that the Adityanath administration is squarely responsible for killing innocents and only the BJP-RSS is guilty of setting fire to the peace and harmony of Sambhal. Modi-Yogi 'double assault' governments, which consider the minority community as second-class citizens, hurriedly got a petition filed in court," Khera said. It is public knowledge that the court ordered an immediate survey without hearing the other side, he said. "No action was taken against the rioters who accompanied the survey team. This makes it clear that after the by-elections in the state, the Yogi government has further intensified the politics of violence and hatred," he added. The Congress leader said that questions are being raised about the role of the police and the administration because many innocent people have lost their lives in this violence and more than two dozen people have been injured. "Inciting communal hatred and driving a wedge between two communities - is the DNA of BJP-RSS!" Khera said. "On one hand, there is an empty slogan of 'Ek Hai Toh Safe Hain' - on the other hand, they divide communities! On one hand, there is lie of 'Sabka Saath- Sabka Vishwas' that has been going on for a decade, on the other hand, the minority community is constantly being targeted in Uttar Pradesh," he added. The BJP government in Uttar Pradesh is destroying communal harmony and brotherhood for political gains, which is highly condemnable and objectionable, Khera said. "We appeal to the BJP to prioritize the nation's interests over their political ambitions," he added. "We want to ask Prime Minister Modi and Chief Minister Adityanath whether they will follow the statement of their own Mohan Bhagwat ji in June 2022 (even if it is pretentious!) in which he said that 'History is something that we cannot change. Neither today's Hindus nor today's Muslims made it, it happened at that time.... Why see Shivling in every mosque?.... Now we do not have to do any agitation..?'" Khera said. "Neither Modi ji, nor Chief Minister Adityanath nor Mohan Bhagwat ji have the answer to this!" he added. Khera said Rahul Gandhi has been continuously and stridently talked about 'Nafrat Ke Bazaar Mein Mohabbat Ki Dukaan' and in such a situation, an appeal is made to the people of Sambhal to recognise the politics of hatred, maintain mutual unity, amity and harmony, and take steps to protect their rights in a legal manner. Moradabad Divisional Commissioner Aunjaneya Kumar Singh said the protesters torched vehicles and pelted stones at the police, who used tear gas and batons to disperse the mob. "Shots were fired by the miscreants... the PRO of the superintendent of police suffered a gunshot to the leg, the police circle officer was hit by pellets and 15 to 20 security personnel were injured in the violence," he said. Singh said that a constable also suffered a serious head injury, while the deputy collector fractured his leg. Internet services have been suspended in Sambhal tehsil for 24 hours and the district administration declared a holiday on November 25 for all students up to Class 12. Purported images shared on social media showed the protesters pelting stones at cops from atop buildings and in front of the Shahi Jama Masjid. Later, the police personnel were purportedly seen cornering and hitting people as they tried to disperse a large crowd in a narrow alleyway. FRENCH lawmakers on Wednesday voted to oust the government of Prime Minister Michel Barnier after just three months in office, a historic move which hurled the country further into political uncertainty. For the first time in over sixty years, the National Assembly lower house toppled the incumbent government, approving a no-confidence motion that had been proposed by the hard left but which crucially was backed by the far-right headed by Marine Le Pen. Barnier’s rapid ejection from office comes after snap parliamentary elections this summer which resulted in a hung parliament with no party having an overall majority and the far-right holding the key to the government’s survival. President Emmanuel Macron now has the difficult task of picking a viable successor with over two years of his presidential term left. He is to address the nation at 1900 GMT on Thursday, the Elysee said. Earlier in the day, Macron is to receive Barnier at 0900 GMT who will submit the resignation of the government. The National Assembly debated a motion brought by the hard left in a standoff over next year’s austerity budget, after the prime minister on Monday forced through a social security financing bill without a vote. With the support of the far-right, a majority of 331 MPs in the 577-member chamber voted to oust the government. ‘Calling on Macron to go’ Macron flew back into Paris just ahead of the vote after wrapping up his three-day state visit to Saudi Arabia, an apparent world away from the domestic crisis. He strolled earlier on Wednesday through the desert sands of the Al-Ula oasis, an iconic tourist project of the kingdom, marvelling at ancient landmarks. After landing, he headed direct to the Elysee Palace. “We are now calling on Macron to go,” Mathilde Panot, the head of the parliamentary faction of the hard-left France Unbowed (LFI) party told reporters, urging “early presidential elections” to solve the deepening political crisis. But taking care not to crow over the fall of the government, Le Pen said in a television interview that her party - once a new premier is appointed - “would let them work” and help create a “budget that is acceptable for everyone”. Laurent Wauquiez, the head of right-wing deputies in parliament, said the far-right and hard-left bore the responsibility for a no-confidence vote that would “plunge the country into instability”. ‘His failure’ Macron on Tuesday had rejected calls to resign, saying such a scenario amounted to “political fiction”. With markets nervous and France bracing for public-sector strikes against the threat of cutbacks, action that will shut schools and hit air and rail traffic, there is a growing sense of crisis. The unions have called for civil servants, including teachers and air traffic controllers, to strike on Thursday over separate cost-cutting measures proposed by their respective ministries this autumn. Meanwhile, Macron is due to host a major international event on Saturday, with the reopening of the Notre-Dame cathedral after the 2019 fire, with guests including Donald Trump on his first foreign trip since he was elected to be the next US president. “His failure,” was left-wing daily Liberation ’s front-page headline, with a picture of Macron, whose term runs until 2027. ‘Shattered strategy’ In an editorial, Le Monde said Le Pen’s move risked upsetting her own supporters, such as retirees and business leaders, by toppling the government. “In the space of a few minutes, she shattered the strategy of normalisation she had consistently pursued,” the daily said. Some observers have suggested that Le Pen, 56, is seeking to bring down Macron before his term ends by ousting Barnier. Le Pen is embroiled in a high-profile embezzlement trial. If found guilty in March, she could be blocked from participating in France’s next presidential election. But if Macron stepped down soon, an election would have to be called within a month, potentially ahead of the verdict in her trial. Candidates for the post of premier are few, but loyalist Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu and Macron’s centrist ally Francois Bayrou are possible contenders. On the left, Macron could turn to former Socialist premier and interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve, a contender in September. Macron is minded to appoint the new premier rapidly, several sources told AFP. It was the first successful no-confidence vote since a defeat for Georges Pompidou’s government in 1962, when Charles de Gaulle was president. The lifespan of Barnier’s government is also the shortest of any administration since the Fifth Republic began in 1958. West Ham surprise Newcastle with 2-0 away winShare Tweet Share Share Email As 2024 draws to a close, we can safely look back and say it’s been another hard year for cyber security. Cybercriminals have developed numerous clever new ways to attack businesses. On top of this, there is a huge global shortage of cyber security professionals—over 6 million globally. Upon recognising this immediate danger, Scottish cyber security experts Jera IT decided to set up an IT academy to train the next generation of cyber security professionals. In this interview, Ally Hollins-Kirk offers insight into the founding of the academy, what the programme the students go through looks like, and where the future of Scottish cyber security lies. What Prompted Jera IT to Create the Jera IT Academy? As a managed service provider, we eat, breathe and sleep cyber security . We’ve been doing it for over 20 years and have faced just about every major attack you could think of. With that, we’re always talking to potential prospects and our clients about their cyber security preparedness. 9 times out of 10, we came across the same two problems: People think they’re either too small or in an irrelevant industry to worry about cyber attacks We don’t have the money to pay for cyber security staff, and even if we did, there aren’t any available! The first issue is one of the most common things we come up against, and we hate to burst the bubble, but everyone is at risk. Cybercriminals target small businesses just as happily as the larger ones, and unlike those big businesses, small and medium businesses probably don’t have the resources to protect themselves or survive an attack. The next point is even more worrying. It’s not just cyber security; the IT sector as a whole has faced shortages. The talent pool is small, and therefore you have to pay a whole lot for the recruits that are out there, and it may be a case where you simply have to take what you get. We’ve noticed it ourselves when trying to find people for our team. Recently we had to find a number of engineers and cyber security team members and unfortunately hit brick wall after brick wall. From that experience, we figured out a way to solve both problems at once. The Jera IT Academy was that solution . Who can take advantage of the academy? Whilst we do have plans to expand the offerings, our first run this year has been exclusively offering a foundation apprenticeship. That means we take in students doing their highers in high school, replacing one of the higher qualifications they would do at that level. As far as the students themselves, the main qualities we’re looking for are curiosity, people skills and a good attitude. Knowledge about software and computers isn’t vital; our intention is to teach that, so while some background knowledge might be helpful, it isn’t a deal breaker for the right candidate. Having your Standard Level Math and Standard Level English will also be pretty important. At the moment we’re operating alongside schools in Edinburgh; however, we are looking to expand into Aberdeen and other areas of Scotland in the near future. What does an average day for the academy students look like? So it’s a bit of a cliché, but there isn’t really an average day. Part of what draws students in is that the academy is a learning experience completely different from their other highers. Yes, there is an element of traditional education, but you’re kickstarting a career in cyber security, and that means rolling up your sleeves and diving in! We host the students at our state-of-the-art facility we’ve set up specifically to house the academy. This means they get hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology and software in the cyber security space. They’ll also be getting experience and tutoring with the best-rated managed service team in Scotland. As for the foundation apprenticeship itself, the students will cover the following: Security Fundamentals Network Fundamentals Server Administration Fundamentals IT and Telecom System Operation and support Customer Service skills And what happens when they graduate? Upon completing the foundation apprenticeship, a number of options become open to successful students. They’ll be fully prepared to take their first step into the world of cyber security. There are three main paths open to students: Get right out there and start working in IT. The academy looks fantastic on a CV, and upon completion of the apprenticeship, we’ll provide a glowing reference. There will also be opportunities for networking to meet potential employers in the space. Students could also further their qualifications at the academy. In the not-too-distant future, we’ll also be offering a modern apprenticeship with an opportunity to get real-world experience with some of the biggest businesses in Scotland The other option is to go on and study further at a university or similar. With the foundation apprenticeship on your application, students will be able to separate themselves from the competition for many technology-based courses. If you had anything to say to convince young people to take on a career in IT and cyber security, what would it be? As we mentioned before, there is a massive shortage of cyber security professionals globally at the moment. That means that as a cyber security professional, your job prospects will be vastly improved. IT jobs are generally well paid; they also offer a great opportunity for career advancement. What our team loves most about working in IT is flexibility. Every industry needs IT support, so your options are practically endless. We also know how important flexibility is to young workers. A career in IT means you have the flexibility to work anywhere in the world. The era of digital nomads is right around the corner, and with the lack of cyber security professionals, your skills will be in demand globally as a graduate of the academy. How can students apply? At the moment, we work exclusively with schools in Mid Lothian. In order to apply, students need to speak to their guidance counsellor or career advisor. If you’re a school we currently work with, they’ll guide you on how best to apply; if we don’t, they can reach out and get in touch with the team, and we can work on the best way to offer the course to schools in your area! The future of cyber security in Scotland is the future of business in Scotland. Whether we want to admit it or not, that future looks bleak, but with the academy, we’re training a whole new generation of cyber security defenders. Anyone interested in hearing more about how the academy can help their business directly can get in touch today to hear more. Black Friday deals are everywhere right now, and many of the major streaming services will probably announce special promotions to entice new customers soon, too. If you’re thinking about “cutting the cord,” or switching from a traditional cable provider to a streaming service , this might be a good time to try it. “The deals that will be coming out will be attractive to new subscribers and most likely will be basic plans with ads,” Chad Gammon, an Iowa-based certified financial planner, said in an email interview. While some streaming services might also offer deals on plans without ads, Gammon, who owns Custom Fit Financial, said they’ll come at a higher cost. So keep an eye out for the deals, but make sure you look at the terms and conditions, too. Some streaming services will roll out their Black Friday prices in the coming days — and some have already started offering deals. For example, ESPN+ is running a promotion offering 12 months for the price of nine, as long as subscribers choose the annual plan. That deal is good through Dec. 2. Last year’s Black Friday deals can be a good indication of what’s to come. "Past Black Friday deals, like Hulu's $1.99/month offer, really show the range of savings,” Clay Cary, a senior trends analyst at CouponFollow, said in a prepared statement. “More often than not, bundles like Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+ tend to give the most value if your household uses multiple platforms," Cary said. We contacted these services about their Black Friday plans. Disney+ said there are no deals to announce quite yet. Hulu and ESPN+ did not respond to requests for information. While you’re waiting for the deals to drop, consider the different streaming plans, your budget, and whether one service can give you all the programming you want. Streaming services present themselves as cheaper alternatives to cable companies with long contracts, poor service, lots of commercials and expensive monthly contracts. But do they make good on that promise? You might think you’re scoring a great streaming service deal only to realize it’s for the version with ads. Pay attention to other details, too. A streaming service might offer a seasonal deal, but on a plan that limits the number of devices that can stream at once, and video quality can vary. Crackdowns on password sharing have also hit the streaming world hard and frustrated many consumers — and the alternatives aren’t great. “Paid-sharing options, like Netflix's, haven't been popular because they feel like an extra charge without added value,” Cary said. “For budget-conscious viewers, these changes could push them toward free ad-supported services instead.” If you were hoping to cut ties with your cable provider, you might have to think twice. You’ll still need the internet to use your streaming service. Many households bundle cable and internet costs, so if you cut cable, you will need to get a price for an internet-only plan. If multiple people in your household are streaming at once, you might find your old internet speed isn’t cutting it. A boost in internet speed will cost more, so you’ll need to adjust your budget accordingly. If you’re a sports fan with kids in the house and a spouse who likes shows from premium channels, you might have to sign up for three different streaming services to get all the content you want. Signing up for multiple streaming services can get pricey and can also be a real headache. Gammon described this as “subscription fatigue,” where people subscribe to multiple services and end up not using them because they can’t find which programs are on which streaming service. To stay within your budget, Cary said consumers should focus “on platforms that align with what you actually watch rather than trying to subscribe to everything.” The excitement of scoring a cheap deal won’t last forever. “When promotional deals lapse, prices can spiral upward alarmingly, doubling in some cases,” Cary said. “To avoid such surprises, set a reminder before the discounted rate expires to review your subscription,” he said. Before signing up, ask yourself: How do streaming services fit into my budget? In a 50/30/20 budget , streaming services fit squarely into the 30% wants category, alongside travel, entertainment and dining out. If your budget is tight, check your current memberships, because some major retailers offer significant discounts or free subscriptions on streaming services. For example: While most of these offers are for base-level plans with ads, tapping into existing benefits is a low-stakes way to try out one of these platforms.
