Jurors are considering whether to convict Shannon Stillwell and Deamonte Kendrick, who raps as Yak Gotti, on gang, murder, drug and gun charges. The original indictment charged 28 people with conspiring to violate Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. Opening statements in the trial for six of those defendants happened a year ago . Four of them, including Young Thug, pleaded guilty last month. The rapper was freed on probation. Stillwell and Kendrick rejected plea deals after more than a week of negotiations, and their lawyers chose not to present evidence or witnesses. Both seemed to be in good spirits Tuesday morning after closings wrapped the previous night. Kendrick was chatting and laughing with Stillwell and his lawyers before the jury arrived for instructions. The jury started deliberating Tuesday afternoon and was dismissed at 5 p.m. Jurors are expected to resume deliberations Wednesday morning. If they don’t reach a verdict by 3 p.m. Wednesday, the judge will send them home for the Thanksgiving weekend and they will return Monday morning. Kendrick and Stillwell were charged in the 2015 killing of Donovan Thomas Jr., also known as “Big Nut,” in an Atlanta barbershop. Prosecutors painted Stillwell and Kendrick as members of a violent street gang called Young Slime Life, or YSL, co-founded in 2012 by Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams. During closings on Monday, they pointed to tattoos, song lyrics and social media posts they said proved members, including Stillwell, admitted to killing people in rival gangs. Prosecutors say Thomas was in a rival gang. Stillwell was also charged in the 2022 killing of Shymel Drinks, which prosecutors said was in retaliation for the killing of two YSL associates days earlier. Defense attorneys Doug Weinstein and Max Schardt said the state presented unreliable witnesses, weak evidence and cherry-picked lyrics and social media posts to push a false narrative about Stillwell, Kendrick and the members of YSL. Schardt, Stillwell's attorney, reminded the jury that alleged YSL affiliates said during the trial that they had lied to police. Law enforcement played a “sick game” by promising they would escape long prison sentences if they said what police wanted them to say, Schardt said. He theorized that one of those witnesses could have killed Thomas. The truth is that their clients were just trying to escape poverty through music, Schardt said. “As a whole, we know the struggles that these communities have had,” Schardt said. “A sad, tacit acceptance that it’s either rap, prison or death.” Young Thug’s record label is also known as YSL, an acronym of Young Stoner Life. Kendrick was featured on two popular songs from the label’s compilation album Slime Language 2, “Take It to Trial" and “Slatty," which prosecutors presented as evidence in the trial. Weinstein, Kendrick’s defense attorney, said during closings it was wrong for prosecutors to target the defendants for their music and lyrics. Prosecutor Simone Hylton disagreed, and said surveillance footage and phone evidence supported her case. “They have the audacity to think they can just brag about killing somebody and nobody’s gonna hold them accountable,” Hylton said. The trial had more than its fair share of delays. Jury selection took nearly 10 months , and Stillwell was stabbed last year at the Fulton County jail, which paused trial proceedings. Judge Paige Reese Whitaker took over after Fulton County Superior Court Chief Judge Ural Glanville was removed from the case in July because he had a meeting with prosecutors and a state witness without defense attorneys present. Whitaker often lost patience with prosecutors over moves such as not sharing evidence with defense attorneys, once accusing them of “poor lawyering.” But the trial sped up under her watch. In October, four defendants, including Young Thug , pleaded guilty, with the rapper entering a non-negotiated or “blind” plea, meaning he didn't have a deal worked out with prosecutors. Nine people charged in the indictment, including rapper Gunna , accepted plea deals before the trial began. Charges against 12 others are pending. Prosecutors dropped charges against one defendant after he was convicted of murder in an unrelated case. MAURITIUS has been accused of demanding “crazy” money in diplomatic negotiations with the UK over the future of the Chagos Islands. Talks over relinquishing sovereignty and a 99-year lease for the Diego Garcia military base in the Indian Ocean are holding up a deal. But it’s understood new leader Navin Ramgoolam wants up to £800million a year and reparations. A source told The Sunday Times: “They want crazy money . “They were talking £800million a year for as long as we wanted to keep the base there, plus billions of pounds in reparations.” The revelation comes as the new leader Navin Ramgoolam told the US last week that he wouldn’t accept a deal signed by his predecessor in October. READ MORE ON CHAGOS ISLANDS One British source added: “It is all about the money”. The deal has huge implications for global security with the rise of China and India in the region in the coming generations. The Mauritius leader said that the UK is keen to complete the deal before Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20. Shadow Foreign Secretary Dame Priti Patel told MPs before Christmas that the government was “letting our standing go into freefall” in an increasingly dangerous world. Most read in The Sun She said: “How much is the British taxpayer going to be liable for each year, and in total over 99 years?” The Foreign Office has distanced itself from reports Mauritius wants the eye-watering sums. A spokesman said: “These figures are completely inaccurate.”
Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella changed his cleats just 12 minutes into the game after his slips contributed to both of Tottenham's early goals in the teams' London derby in the Premier League on Sunday. The Spain international ceded possession by slipping on the turf at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the fifth and 11th minutes — and from the ensuing attacks, Spurs scored through Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski. Immediately after Kulusevski's shot hit the net to make it 2-0, Cucurella sprinted to the sideline while shrugging his shoulders and pointed to his cleats. He took them off and threw them away in disgust before putting on new ones. It seemed to work. Within six minutes, he provided the pass that led to Jadon Sancho scoring for Chelsea to make it 2-1. Chelsea went on to win 4-3 — and Cucurella posted a photo on social media after the match, showing the first cleats he wore nestled in a bin. “It almost slipped away,” Cucurella wrote on Instagram Stories, “but proud of the amazing team effort to turn things around.” AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday said India's forgotten pride should be reintroduced. Speaking at Lokmanthan-2024 , a colloquium of " nationalist thinkers " here, Bhagwat talking about the importance of science having the consent of country's philosophical knowledge, cited the example of scientists stressing on ethics in the use of Artificial intelligence. India's value system emphasizes on the individual's wisdom, he said. There is logic, wisdom in India's approach to issues and the country need not follow other approaches to problems. India can take good things from foreign countries but it should have its own soul and structures. "We will have to think on giving a contemporary form of our eternal dharma and culture," he said. "What we have to do is, we have to introduce the forgotten pride of India again," Bhagwat said. Despite a wild win Sunday for the Dallas Cowboys, America’s Team remains America’s Mess. The Cowboys ended a five-game losing streak — the team’s longest losing streak since 2015 — with a 34-26 win over the Washington Commanders that featured a cacophony of special teams miscues from both squads. Still, Dallas is 4-7 and faces an uphill battle to avoid its first losing season since 2020. Things can’t get much worse for the Cowboys. Quarterback Dak Prescott signed a record-setting contract just as the season began, then suffered a season-ending injury eight games in. Head coach Mike McCarthy’s contract is up after the season and absolutely nobody expects him to be back in 2025. While McCarthy is the lamest of lame ducks, there’s been more chatter about who will replace him than there’s been about how the team can win now. Peter Casey-Imagn Images There’s even been rumblings in the media that Dallas is no longer America’s Team — that the Cowboys are no longer relevant. As Homer Simpson would say, D’oh! (More about Homer in a few.) Sure, these aren’t Roger Staubach’s Cowboys or Troy Aikman’s Cowboys. And for the remainder of this season, they’re Cooper Rush’s Cowboys. We’ve already heard the snarky comments about a Thanksgiving matchup that pits Rush against the Giants’ Tommy DeVito. Talk about a Turkey Bowl. Well guess what? We’ll still be watching. The Cowboys have already played four prime-time games this season, and after hosting the second game on Thanksgiving Day, they’ve got two more night games — hosting the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night in Week 14 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday night in Week 16. On paper, that Bengals-Cowboys Monday night game is a bit of a clunker. Both teams head into Week 13 with 4-7 records, so there certainly won’t be any playoff drama. Did someone say, “Flex?” No, actually nobody did. For starters, the Bengals-Cowboys game is set to feature an alternate viewing presentation called “The Simpsons Funday Football.” The real-time animation broadcast will stream on Disney+ and ESPN+ with players transformed into characters from “The Simpsons.”For the record, Bart will be siding with the Bengals while Homer sides with the Cowboys. Which feels right. Fitting: The NFL Can't Flex Bengals/Cowboys Out Of Monday Night Football Because There's Been 'Too Much Work' Done On The Simpsons Alt-Cast https://t.co/XV5LWW6K2n pic.twitter.com/x5Xb9S88nu The collaboration between the NFL, ESPN, Disney, Sony’s Beyond Sports technology and, of course, the creative crew behind “The Simpsons” has already done plenty of pre-production on the broadcast. So even though this game would seem an ideal candidate to be flexed out of Monday night, that’s not going to happen. Looking at the Week 14 schedule, there wouldn’t have been too many obvious choices to get bumped into the Monday night window. Maybe the best possibility would have been the first-place Atlanta Falcons at the 9-2 Minnesota Vikings — the Kirk Cousins Bowl. Bills at Rams could have been appealing as well. Again, not gonna happen. And while it’s easy to blame Homer and Bart for this, the bottom line is that the Cowboys are still the Cowboys. An NFL Broadcasting exec told me it is “highly unlikely” the league would flex out of a Dallas Monday night game even if The Simpsons execution wasn’t taking place. He pointed out that when Dallas lost on Monday night last week — by 24 points at home to the Houston Texans — the game still attracted 17 million viewers. Even if the Cowboys didn’t hang on Sunday to get a win, they would have been the lead story for most Monday sports shows. Even with the win, there are no great expectations. But the Cowboys are still the Cowboys. And we’ll still be watching. His more than two dozen books included nonfiction, poetry, fiction, religious meditations and a children’s story. His memoir “An Hour Before Daylight” was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2002, while his 2006 best-seller “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid” stirred a fierce debate by likening Israel’s policies in the West Bank to the brutal South African system of racial segregation. And just before his 100th birthday, the Dayton Literary Peace Prize Foundation honored him with a lifetime achievement award for how he wielded "the power of the written word to foster peace, social justice, and global understanding.” In one recent work, “A Full Life,” Carter observed that he “enjoyed writing” and that his books “provided a much-needed source of income.” But some projects were easier than others. “Everything to Gain,” a 1987 collaboration with his wife, Rosalynn, turned into the “worst threat we ever experienced in our marriage,” an intractable standoff for the facilitator of the Camp David accords and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. According to Carter, Rosalynn was a meticulous author who considered “the resulting sentences as though they have come down from Mount Sinai, carved into stone.” Their memories differed on various events and they fell into “constant arguments.” They were ready to abandon the book and return the advance, until their editor persuaded them to simply divide any disputed passages between them. “In the book, each of these paragraphs is identified by a ‘J’ or an ‘R,’ and our marriage survived,” he wrote. New Jersey Devils forward Timo Meier was suspended for one game by the NHL on Tuesday, one day after his cross-check to Zachary L'Heureux knocked the Nashville Predators forward from their game. The suspension comes without pay, meaning based on his average annual salary, Meier will forfeit $45,833.33 while he sits out. Per terms of the collective bargaining agreement, that money will go to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund. Meier will sit out Wednesday's home game against the St. Louis Blues. Meier attempted to poke the puck away from Predators goaltender Juuse Saros at 12:17 of the third period in the Devils' 5-2 win in Newark, N.J. L'Heureux took exception to the move, prompting Meier to respond with a cross-check to the Nashville player's body and again to his face. The second hit drew blood from the 21-year-old L'Heureux. Meier received a five-minute cross-checking penalty and a game misconduct following the exchange. L'Heureux exited the game and did not return. Meier, 28, has recorded 15 points (seven goals, eight assists) in 24 games this season. The Switzerland native has totaled 397 points (198 goals, 199 assists) in 565 career games with the Sharks and Devils since being selected by San Jose with the ninth overall pick of the 2015 NHL Draft. New Jersey acquired Meier from the Sharks in a multi-player deal on Feb. 26, 2023. --Field Level MediaThis Chip Stock Skyrocketed! Another May Catch Up Soon.
President Javier Milei has confirmed that he will attempt to move forward with further pension and labor reforms in 2025, as well as seeking further privatizations of public companies. His comments came in an interview with Forbes published on Sunday. “We will keep removing regulations,” he said. “This year, we rose 70 places in economic freedom. We moved from being among the 35 worst to the middle.” The president did not specify which index he was referring to, although Argentina was ranked in the bottom 35 countries for which data was available in the Heritage Foundation’s most recent index of economic freedom. “We’ve only applied a quarter of the reforms,” he continued. “There are still 3,200 to go. We will remove them to the extent that Congress allows.” In 2025, he said, “we’re going to move forward with an agenda of privatizations and an expansion of labor reform. To the extent that the labor reform works out, we can advance with a pension reform.” In this respect, the president highlighted changes he had implemented through the Bases Law. He said that they would make it possible to expand Argentina’s labor market from 6.5 million people to 14.5 million people. This, he said, meant that “the pension system numbers will change dramatically in favor of retirees having better pensions.” Milei also reflected on the achievements of his first year in office. “We’re eliminating inflation, which means that the distortion in relative prices is being eliminated, and that favors the accumulation of capital. We’re cutting taxes. We’ve carried out 800 structural reforms. Every day we remove regulations,” he said. He is not done with the chainsaw, either. “We made a first major cut, and now we’re getting to the deeper stuff, which isn’t just deregulating and removing barriers, but it implies a new state reform, to make it even smaller.” An excerpt of the interview published on December 22 reported Milei’s comments that three conditions were necessary for him to lift Argentina’s capital controls: an independently floating exchange rate, resolving issues with the Central Bank’s stocks, and aligning the traditional and broad monetary bases. – C5N.com /Herald
