NoneLabour MP for Cardiff West, Alex Barros-Curtis, said warnings should have been “amber or red”, as Mr Reed told MPs that more flooding is “likely”. Hundreds of homes were left under water, roads were turned into rivers and winds of more than 80mph were recorded across parts of the UK. More than 130 flood warnings and 160 alerts remained in place across the UK on Monday. In the Commons on Monday, Mr Barros-Curtis asked: “Can I ask that the Secretary of State speak to his Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) colleagues to carefully look into the role of the Met Office here? “It is clear that their response was slow and that there was a clear underestimation of the impact of Storm Bert. “They put it yellow rather than amber or red. Our constituents have been let down by this incompetence before, and it cannot keep happening.” Mr Reed said: “In most parts of the countries that were affected, warnings were given with adequate time for people to prepare and I would encourage people to sign up on the Defra website, or the Environment Agency website for warnings and alerts if they live in an area that could be affected by flooding. “I’m aware of the particular concern that he mentions regarding the Met Office, and I will indeed be speaking to colleagues in DSIT as they review the circumstances of that and look at how the situation can be improved for future events of this kind.” During his update to the House, the Environment Secretary said that more flooding this week is “likely” but its impact “should be less severe” than has been seen. He said: “Around 28,000 properties are being protected by Environment Agency flood defences. “Unfortunately, an estimated 107 properties have flooded across England, principally from river and surface water flooding.” He added: “The Environment Agency and local responders have also been busy protecting properties elsewhere in England, including flooding from the River Teme in Tenbury Wells where around 40 properties have flooded. “The river has now peaked and local responders will be focusing on the lower reaches of rivers over the next few days.” He further stated: “Further flooding is sadly likely over the next few days as water levels rise in slower flowing rivers such as the Severn and the Ouse. “The Environment Agency anticipates that any impacts should be less severe than we have seen in recent days.” Mr Reed also described the flood defences they inherited from the previous government as being “in the worst condition on record following years of underinvestment”. He added: “Over 3,000 of our key flood defences are below an acceptable standard. “That is why we are investing £2.4 billion over the next two years to build and maintain flood defences.” Elsewhere in the session, Labour MP for Coventry South, Zarah Sultana, was among the MPs to call for a legal duty on fire services to respond to flooding. She said: “I want to express my solidarity and thanks to all of our emergency services, including firefighters on the front line. “Extreme weather events are on the rise and becoming ever more frequent due to climate change, highlighting the urgent need for proper funding and resources. “England is the only part of the UK without a statutory duty for flooding, leaving fire services underfunded and under-resourced to respond effectively. This must change, as the FBU (Fire Brigades Union) has long called for.” “When will the Government finally provide a statutory duty for Fire and Rescue authorities to respond to flooding incidents in England?” Mr Reed replied: “The fire and rescue authorities have the powers to intervene, but she’s quite right to point out there’s not a duty, and officials in my department, working with the Home Office, will review that to see that that remains appropriate.” Conservative MP for Mid Buckinghamshire Greg Smith said some communities in his constituency are flooding “for the first time in decades” as he accused the Government of wanting to “concrete over the countryside”. He said: “That is a result of some of the big infrastructure we are seeing being built, particularly HS2 where they will concrete over a field completely, it seems, unaware that that will have a knock-on effect to farmland next door. “So will the Secretary of State commit to working with the Transport Secretary (Louise Haigh) and I also suggest the Deputy Prime Minister (Angela Rayner) given their plans to concrete over the countryside to ensure that where construction takes place proper, and I really mean proper, flood mitigation measures are put into place.” Mr Reed replied: “This needs to operate across Government, and we will have those conversations and ensure that measures are put in place to support communities as much as is possible from the more severe weather events that we’re seeing as a result of climate change.”

Judge rejects request to sideline a San Jose State volleyball player on grounds she’s transgender A judge has rejected a request to block a San Jose State women’s volleyball team member from playing in a conference tournament on grounds that she’s transgender. Monday’s ruling by U.S. Magistrate Judge S. Kato Crews in Denver will allow the player to continue competing in the Mountain West Conference women’s championship in Las Vegas this week. His order also upholds the seedings and pairings in the tournament. The ruling comes after a lawsuit was filed by nine current players against the Mountain West Conference challenging the league’s policies for allowing transgender players to participate. The players argued that letting her compete was a safety risk and unfair. Conference title games a chance at a banner, bragging rights and, for some, a season-wrecking loss Indiana should be able to breathe easy. The Hoosiers have very little chance of making it to the Big Ten championship game. In the Southeastern Conference, Georgia has a spot in the league title game but with that comes a lot of worry. Conference title games give teams a chance to hang a banner, but for national title contenders it is an additional chance for a season-wrecking loss — even with an expanded 12-team College Football Playoff field. Texas, Texas A&M rivalry that dates to 1894 is reborn AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Any Texas or Texas A&M player who grew up in the state has heard the lore of the rivalry between the two schools, a grudge match that dates to 1894. But for more than a decade it has been only ghostly memories of great games and great plays made by heroes of the distant past. That changes this week when one of college football’s great rivalries is reborn after a 12-year hiatus. Third-ranked Texas plays at No. 20 Texas A&M with a berth in the conference championship game on the line. Week 12 was filled with sloppy play, especially on special teams: Analysis Week 12 was filled with sloppy play around the NFL, leading to some upsets and surprising outcomes. Jayden Daniels nearly led Washington to an improbable comeback down 10 in the final two minutes against Dallas only to fall short because Austin Seibert’s extra point sailed wide left. After a field goal and successful onside kick, Daniels connected with Terry McLaurin on an 86-yard catch-and-run touchdown to bring the Commanders within one point with 21 seconds remaining. But Seibert’s point-after attempt failed and the Cowboys returned the ensuing onside kick for a touchdown to seal a 34-26 victory. Cavaliers' unexpected 17-1 start to season also produces unexpected star: reserve guard Ty Jerome CLEVELAND (AP) — The M-V-P chants weren't only directed at Cleveland All-Star Donvan Mitchell on Sunday night. As the Cavaliers were improving to 17-1 overall and 10-0 at home, reserve guard Ty Jerome heard them while shooting a free throw. The Cavs' unexpected start has produced an unexpected rising star in Jerome, who played in just two games last season because of a severe ankle injury. Jerome has scored 29 and 26 points, respectively, in his last two games. But he's been a marvel since the season began for first-year coach Kenny Atkinson, who is finding it hard to take him off the floor.

No. 22 Xavier aims to keep its perfect record intact Monday night in Fort Myers, Fla., when it takes on South Carolina in the Fort Myers Tip-Off. The Musketeers (5-0) are coming off an 80-55 victory on Wednesday over Siena, while the Gamecocks (3-2) beat Mercer on Thursday 84-72. Against Mercer, South Carolina sank a season-best 12 3-pointers -- tied for the fourth-most in a single game under third-year coach Lamont Paris. Jamarii Thomas, a senior transfer from Norfolk State, had 19 points and swished 4 of 5 shots from behind the arc. "Thomas got some good, clean looks," Paris said. "It was good to see those guys make their shots. Hopefully it gets those guys going in the right direction." On the season, the Gamecocks are making 7.8 3-pointers per game and shooting 32.5 percent from deep. Senior guard Jacobi Wright makes a team-best 1.8 3-pointers per game and shoots 37.5 percent from behind the arc. At 13.0 ppg, he is second on the team behind Collin Murray-Boyles (15.8). Xavier is allowing eight makes from deep per game and is letting opponents shoot 38.5 percent from behind the arc, which ranks 337th in the country. And despite an undefeated record so far for the Musketeers, third-year coach Sean Miller is worried about his players developing bad habits. "We have a virus that everybody is looking at the stat sheet, trying to get as many points as they possibly can," Miller said after the win over Siena. "They want to win, but they really want to win and score. We need a couple of guys that are willing to rebound, defend, make the extra pass, play at a high level defensively and understand what makes a team great." Marcus Foster did a decent job of doing a little bit of everything for Xavier against Siena, piling up 12 points, five rebounds, five assists and a steal. It was the first double-digit scoring outing for Foster -- a grad transfer from Furman -- in a Xavier uniform. Since 2008, Xavier is 25-11 against teams from the Southeastern Conference, but it hasn't played South Carolina in that stretch. --Field Level MediaAfter drubbing, San Jose Sharks look for response in South FloridaHailey Bieber Is the Queen of Vintage Boss Babe Style

Latest NewsWASHINGTON — If you had been told that the Knicks' Jalen Brunson was going to pile up 55 points and Karl-Anthony Towns was going to record 30 points and 14 rebounds against the worst team in the Eastern Conference, would you have felt safe enjoying your Saturday night without watching? Maybe covering your eyes would have been the proper strategy. The Knicks needed every bit of those heroics to escape Capital One Arena with a frantic 136-132 overtime victory over the Washington Wizards. The Knicks trailed by as many as 11 in the third quarter and 10 early in the fourth quarter and didn’t pull even until Brunson delivered a shot in the lane with 10.8 seconds left in regulation. But Brunson scored 42 points after halftime, and that was just enough to give the Knicks their seventh straight victory as they improved to 22-10 and dropped the Wizards to 5-24. It was the third time Brunson has topped 50 points and the second-highest total of his career behind the 61 he recorded against the Spurs last March. Josh Hart gave the Knicks the lead to start the overtime session, assisted on Mikal Bridges' dunk and then scored in transition midway through the overtime, matching the Knicks' largest lead of the game to that point at 125-121. But even with Brunson dominating the action, the Knicks still found themselves leading by only one with 21 seconds left after Brunson's turnover and Malcolm Brogdon's fast-break basket. The Knicks milked 10 seconds off the clock before Brunson was fouled with 10.4 seconds left. He hit both free throws, giving the Knicks a three-point lead and leaving Washington with one more chance to tie. The Knicks fouled Brogdon with 9.3 seconds left and he hit both free throws, closing the gap to one again. This time the Knicks played keep-away until Brunson was fouled with 4.2 seconds left, and he sank two free throws for a three-point lead. When the Knicks again fouled to keep Washington from attempting a three-pointer, Brogdon hit the first and intentionally missed the second. But Hart grabbed the loose ball, was fouled with seven-tenths of a second left and hit both free throws to secure the win. The Knicks could point to playing on the second night of a road back-to-back and maybe taking the last-place Wizards too lightly. But that is the exact scenario that they insist they have prepared to face. “That's the challenge, and that's why I think you go into the season with the thought process in mind of how we are gonna approach the season,” coach Tom Thibodeau said before the game of making the most out of this stretch of the schedule. “And that's why each and every day is so important. It's easy to get distracted in this league because of the volume of games and the different circumstances, whether it's an early start, late start, a back-to-back, a Christmas Day. “That's why it's so important to have a routine and be able to focus on everything you're trying to do each day and to not get bored with things and don't skip over things. When you start taking shortcuts, it shows in your performance.” The Knicks seemed capable at times of waking up and taking over. Brunson dragged them back in the game after they fell behind by 11 late in the third and Towns punished the Wizards with a combination of three-point field goals and feathery turnaround jumpers in the fourth quarter. But the ease of their stars taking over never seemed to wake the defense. The Knicks repeatedly were roasted from the three-point line, and even when the Wizards missed, too often the Knicks were flat-footed, allowing second and third opportunities for Washington. Towns drained a three to put the Knicks in front 103-102 with 7:54 remaining, but Justin Champagnie (31 points, 13-for-15 shooting, 5-for-6 from three-point range) answered with a three. After an exchange of baskets, the Wizards misfired twice on threes but pushed in front on Keyonte George's tip-in as the Knicks watched. After a timeout, Brunson missed a three and Champagnie delivered again, pushing the lead back to 114-107. The Knicks caught a break with the deficit at five as a Washington tip-in was called offensive goaltending even though a replay seemed to show it was good. Brunson's jumper cut the Knicks' deficit to 114-111, Champagnie and OG Anunoby traded three-pointers and the Knicks had the ball again with a chance to tie. Brunson and Towns then misfired from outside the arc on the next two possessions. Bub Carrington's jumper pushed the Wizards' lead to five with 1:07 remaining, but Brunson scored in the lane and converted the three-point play with 57.2 remaining to bring the Knicks within two again. Brunson delivered the tying bucket with 10.8 seconds to play, and Bilal Coulibaly's forced jumper with 1.5 seconds left fell short. The Knicks grabbed the rebound and called time with eight-tenths of a second remaining. Brunson inbounded from near midcourt and found Towns cutting, but his quick attempt at a layup missed badly and the game moved to overtime. 50 is nifty Knicks with multiple 50-point games Bernard King (five times) Jalen Brunson (three times) Richie Guerin (three times) Patrick Ewing (two times) Allan Houston (two times) Carmelo Anthony (two times) Steve Popper covers the Knicks for Newsday.
