super jili ace The Israeli security cabinet will convene on Tuesday and is expected to approve the ceasefire agreement, with diplomatic sources in Israel indicating that a deal is very close after more than 13 months of fighting. The powerful Shia militia, backed by Iran , began firing rockets into northern Israel from Lebanon the day after the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7th, 2023. For a year it refused to agree to a truce as long as the fighting in Gaza continued but it dropped this linkage after Israeli forces invaded southern Lebanon and killed a number of Hizbullah leaders and senior commanders in October. Lebanon’s health ministry says Israeli attacks have killed 3,768 people in Lebanon and forced more than one million people from their homes. Its casualty figures do not distinguish between civilians and combatants. Hizbullah strikes have killed 45 civilians in northern Israel and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. At least 73 Israeli soldiers have been killed in northern Israel and the Golan Heights, and in combat in southern Lebanon, according to Israeli authorities. The emerging agreement is based on an initial 60-day truce, during which Hizbullah fighters will move north of the Litani river and the Lebanese army and Unifil troops will deploy between the Israeli border and the Litani, which is some 30km north of the Israeli border. Israel has made it clear that will act aggressively and immediately if Hizbullah violates the terms of the ceasefire and an annex accompanying the agreement to this effect will be signed between Israel and the US. The US will also play the dominant role in a new five-country committee that will supervise the ceasefire and developments on the ground, in close co-ordination with the Lebanese Army Forces. Israel hopes the agreement will pave the way for the return of the 60,000 or so residents of the north who fled their homes to avoid Hizbullah rocket fire. However, many border community mayors condemned the “surrender deal”, warning that Hizbullah can rearm and return to the Shia villages close to the border in the coming years. There is also political opposition, although prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu is expected to garner a majority for the deal. National security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, head of the far-right Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Strength), described the emerging agreement with Lebanon as “a big mistake” representing a “historic missed opportunity to eradicate” Hizbullah. “Now, when Hizbullah is weakened and desperate for a ceasefire, we must not stop,” he said. Despite the optimism of an imminent breakthrough, both sides continued attacks in advance of a possible truce. The Israel Defense Forces announced on Monday that the air force had attacked Hizbullah command centres in the Dahiyeh quarter in Beirut, and in Nabatieh, Baalbek and the Bekaa valley. It claimed militant targets were also hit in Tyre in southern Lebanon. Hizbullah continued its rocket and drone attacks across northern Israel. – Additional reporting: Reuters

Even though Ohio State is focused on Indiana for this Saturday, some sports bettors are already looking at next Saturday's Ohio State game against Michigan. For the last three seasons, everything has come down to that game in terms of the Big Ten title. The winner of that game has gone on to win the Big Ten but Michigan won't win the conference if it wins this year's edition of "The Game." That's because Michigan has taken a step back after three dominant seasons, including the 2023 season when it won the national title. Michigan is only 5-5 and still needs a win in one of its last two games just to make a bowl. Scott Taetsch/Getty Images Meanwhile, Ohio State is 9-1 and will clinch a spot in the Big Ten Championship Game with wins in their next two games. With that in mind, Ohio State is currently a 23.5 home favorite against Michigan heading into the November 30 showdown in Columbus. NEW: Ohio State opens as a 23.5-point favorite at home vs. Michigan next Saturday, per @FDSportsbook 👀 Who you got? ⬇️ https://t.co/W3dswkwcG2 pic.twitter.com/KeonV0jsU7 The Buckeyes have lost three in a row to their biggest rival, which isn't the norm for them. The last time they lost three in a row to the Wolverines before these last three seasons was from 1995-97. On paper, the Buckeyes have a big advantage since they have the better team and the game is at home but as the saying goes, anyone can win on any given day. Before they can worry about that game, they're focused on trying to take down the Hoosiers of Indiana this Saturday. The Hoosiers are 10-0 and can clinch a spot in the Big Ten Title Game with a win. Kickoff will be at Noon ET on FOX. Gus Johnson and Joel Klatt will have the call. Related: College GameDay Announces Guest Picker For Ohio State vs. Indiana

Some New York lawmakers are making the move to social media platform BlueskyThe Wishfield Journal event is in progress in Infinity Nikki , giving players a new way to gain some Resonance Crystals, which are used to get epic outfits and a fresh new Card background. The second day of this event is called Moments of Travel, and it’s photography-based. You’ll unlock the camera relatively early in the story after visiting the Wishing Tree in Florawish. After talking to the two children there, someone will snap your photo and give you a camera as a gift to thank you for allowing them to submit the picture to a magazine. Not only is this very generous of them, but it also unlocks the photo mode in-game, which is undeniably brilliant. How to complete Moments of Travel in Infinity Nikki To complete day two of the Wishfield Journal event, Moments of Travel, you’ll need to take four specific photos using your new camera, each with certain requirements. The easiest is “Catching the Sunshine”, which requires you to take a photo with the sun in the background. This can be done anywhere during the day as long as the light from the sun is present in the photo. The rest are more complicated, so let’s look at how to complete them. This is possibly the hardest one to figure out, and if you haven’t spent hours aimlessly exploring the map, there’s a high chance that you won’t have unlocked this area just yet. To find the Abandoned Fanatic Wisher Camp, you’ll need to venture far southwest of Florawish until you find a large peninsula sticking out to the west of the map, which is almost entirely taken up by the Camp itself: Unfortunately, there is no fast way to get to this location, especially if you’ve not unlocked any of the southern Warp Spires. You can speed up the process by hiring a Whimcycle, but even then, the journey will take you a while. Either way, make sure to activate any Warp Spires that you come across along the way. Be warned, the entire camp is filled with Esselings to take out, including some with shields that you’ll need to attack from behind. When you’ve dealt with them, you’ll be able to locate the cavern needed for this objective. Don’t waste time looking for an arch in the rock; it’s actually a hole in the ground that you need to find, and I’ve marked the location on the map below: When you’ve jumped down the hole, venture further down the path, and take a picture of the space inside, you’ll be able to check off this objective and get your reward. Thankfully, the Swan Gazebo is substantially easier to find than the hidden cavern for the previous quest. If you have unlocked the Bug Catcher’s Cabin Warp Spire, you can head there and go east. Otherwise, you’re still in for a bit of a trek. The Swan Gazebo can be found on the circular platform on the eastern shore, just south of the Fishing Association that you visited during day one’s Whimstar Collection objectives, flanked by two small peninsulas to the north and south, as shown on the map below: You can be in this photo or not, but it’s a very scenic spot to take some shots and get to grips with everything that can be done with the photo mode in Infinity Nikki. You should have unlocked the Dream Warehouse Warp Spire by this point, especially if you’ve completed day one’s Whimstar Collec tion objectives. However, if you haven’t, the Dream Warehouse can be found to the north of Florawish town. It is the tallest of the three buildings, which poses the problem of getting up to the roof. To get up there, you’ll need to carefully use the ruins to the right of the tower itself to gradually climb higher. This can get frustrating, but keep at it, and you’ll eventually reach the Dream Warehouse Rooftop Warp Spire. This is as high as you need to go to tick off this objective and complete day two of the Wishfield Journal event.

‘A new perch’: Trump loyalist Matt Gaetz confirms US Congress departureSupport independent journalism that matters — become a Vox Member today. The twists and turns in the ongoing story of Hannah Kobayashi, who went missing in Los Angeles last month after failing to get on her connecting flight to New York, have kept the public riveted for nearly a month. But now, amid a family tragedy that includes the death of Kobayashi’s father by apparent suicide, police have determined Kobayashi might have walked away from her life voluntarily.Los Angeles police announced Monday that they’d reviewed surveillance video showing a woman they believed to be Kobayashi on November 12, the day her family reported her missing. Kobayashi, who is from Hawaii, had failed to complete a flight from her home state to New York City. The footage shows a woman who appears to be Kobayashi at a Los Angeles bus station, buying a ticket to the border. Police say she used her passport to make the purchase, then crossed over into Mexico from San Ysidro. The investigation is the second high-profile missing persons case in recent weeks to take an unexpected turn after the person turned up seemingly unharmed. On November 11, the day before Kobayashi’s family reported her missing, a Wisconsin man resurfaced after being missing for months to admit that he had faked his own death in a dramatic kayaking incident in order to escape his life and start over in Eastern Europe. Los Angeles investigators felt that Kobayashi had likewise walked away from her own life and that, until she decided to resurface, there was little they could do. “To date, the investigation has not uncovered any evidence that Kobayashi is being trafficked or is the victim of foul play. She is also not a suspect in any criminal activity,” Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell stated during a news conference. “She has a right to her privacy, and we respect her choices but we also understand the concern her loved ones feel for her.”There are several alarming differences between the two cases, beginning with the sharp and sudden turn in Kobayashi’s trajectory. The 30-year-old Maui resident was a free spirit with a love of art, photography, and the outdoors before she boarded a flight to visit a relative on November 8. It was supposed to be her first trip to the New York City — something she’d had on her “bucket list” of places to see — and she had plans to see a Broadway show with a friend before traveling upstate. She was sharing the flight with an ex-boyfriend, though they reportedly sat in different parts of the plane, and he doesn’t appear to have had anything to do with her disappearance. Kobayashi didn’t join him on their connecting flight out of LAX. Instead, she left the airport. Security footage caught her getting on the Metro headed toward downtown Los Angeles. After her family reported her missing, multiple people reported having seen her at The Grove shopping mall on November 9 and 10. Eagle-eyed web sleuths spotted her appearing on camera 31 seconds into a video shot at a LeBron James Nike event held there. Hannah even uploaded a photo from the event to her own Instagram — the last post she’s made there to date.During her days spent in the city, she sent a series of alarming texts to family and friends. One text spoke of “Deep Hackers” who “wiped my identity, stole all of my funds, & have had me on a mind fuck since Friday,” while another claimed she’d been “tricked pretty much into giving away all my funds. From someone I thought I loved.” She also told family she’d missed her flight to New York but reportedly used language that family members thought didn’t sound like her. One such suspect text, containing odd endearments she didn’t typically use, said, “I’m just really scared love & the redwoods if calling me & I know I’m meant to be there, I’m being guided there, like you have before ... I risk my freedom if this goes wrong for me hun.” Another spoke of her having “just finished a very intense spiritual awakening.” In one text, Kobayashi reportedly claimed that she was scared and afraid to go home. “Even though she was in contact with us, she wasn’t in contact with us in her right mind,” her aunt, Larie Pidgeon, told USA Today.“I just need to rest & I’ll think better,” one text to her mother, sent on November 11, reportedly read. “But it’s very complicated Matrix underworld shit.” It was one of her final communications to her family. Her final texts indicated she was returning to the airport and promised to keep her family posted. Although she did return to the airport, she ultimately only picked up her luggage, which she’d requested to have flown back from New York to LA. That evening, according to a Facebook post made by her family, she was spotted getting off the Metro near Crypto.com Arena (formerly Staples Center). Her family claimed in the post that they’d seen footage of the sighting which indicated that Hannah “does not appear to be in good condition” and she is not alone. After November 11, her phone was turned off, and by the following week, Kobayashi had fallen off the grid — she’d stopped sending text updates, and family and friends fanned out across the city to search for her. We now know that she had already crossed the border into Mexico, but her family claimed they had only radio silence from LAPD about what, if anything, they had learned, leaving them to search for answers alone. After the family held a public rally on November 21, police finally got in touch with them, though it would still be another week before any answers arrived. In the middle of the family’s fear that she’d been abducted or trafficked, and amid enormous and growing public speculation about what happened to her, her father Ryan Kobayashi was searching for her. On November 15, he told KHNL Hawaii News Now that he’d experienced a “lot of worrying, a lot of confusion. Everything is just a blur it seems, because I haven’t slept well since I’ve heard the news.” He went on to ask Hannah to get in touch with the police or with her family. “There’s a lot of people out there that care and love you, Hannah,” he said. “If you can just get to somebody, whatever you can do ... just let us know that you’re okay.”At some time around 4 am on November 24, Ryan Kobayashi died by suicide in Los Angeles. “I’m going to continue to stay strong for you,” Hannah Kobayashi’s sister Sydni wrote on social media. “We’re going to find Hannah.”Despite indications that Kobayashi may have been suffering from a mental break or another form of mental illness, Pidgeon pushed back on this possibility. “She has no record on that,” she told NBC on November 15. “She is not on medication. Hannah’s someone that we can call and she’s going to call us back within an hour.” Pidgeon further criticized the public speculation about Hannah’s disappearance for pushing her father to a breaking point. Conspiracy theories online abounded about what happened to her, everything from run-ins with the Twin Flames new-age cult to bad drug trips gone haywire. “If Ryan is looking at all this shit, imagine that weighing on him?” she told the New York Post, which had previously reported sensationalized details like Kobayashi having paid for a tarot reading while she was out and about in LA.In their announcement that they would be changing Kobayashi’s status to that of a “voluntary missing person,” the LAPD claimed that Kobayashi had evinced a desire to “step away from modern connectivity.” This included old social media posts she’d made where she seemed to want to “disconnect from her phone,” according to Missing Persons investigator Lt. Douglas Oldfield. Still, the family continued to press for answers, vowing that the search for Hannah would continue. It won’t, however, be continuing as publicly as before. The burgeoning Facebook group “Help Us Find Hannah,” which grew to over 25,000 members, went private after the announcement on Monday, with family members reportedly claiming to have received “threats against their lives and the lives of their small children.” It’s unclear what if anything provoked the threats, but it is clear that public speculation and scrutiny surrounding Kobayashi’s disappearance had spiraled in the weeks since she first left LAX. On Tuesday, moderators of Reddit’s r/Hawaii subreddit locked their post about the disappearance because it was “starting to see a lot of baseless conspiracy theories.”However complicated Kobayashi’s story is, it seems abundantly clear that her family is right to be alarmed for her safety. It’s also increasingly evident that while the era of social media and heightened public scrutiny over police investigations can be uniquely beneficial, it can also be extremely overwhelming, obfuscatory, and frustrating to family, friends, and officials trying to find loved ones. While the huge number of eyes on Hannah as she went on her journey was undoubtedly helpful in locating her, false sightings and far-fetched rumors may have made it harder on the family. Hannah Kobayashi’s situation, however alarming, was and is potentially resolvable. It’s impossible to know whether the tragedy of her father’s suicide could have been avoided if her disappearance hadn’t become headline-grabbing news, but it almost certainly didn’t help.Still, while it’s tempting to blame Ryan Kobayashi’s death on the media and public frenzy, the real stressors might have been much closer to home. He had told CNN that he and Hannah had not been close when she was growing up and that they “hadn’t had contact for a while.” “I’m just trying to make up,” he said. “I’m trying to get her back. That’s my main focus.”The grim but less complicated takeaway from this series of tragic events might be just this: The mighty apparatus of true crime theorizing and crowdsourced web sleuthing can often make family tragedies into labyrinthine mysteries when they aren’t. Sometimes, the answers may be undramatic and unsatisfying — but perhaps the simpler they are, the less they lead us astray.Cold cash: Sanitation Department now recruiting for emergency snow shovelers in NYC

More than four million Americans gouged by credit repair companies including Lexington Law and CreditRepair.com will soon collectively receive $1.8 billion in refund checks, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced Thursday. The payments make up the biggest distribution yet from the CFPB's victims relief fund, financed by civil penalties paid by companies that violate consumer protection laws, the agency said. Checks will be mailed in coming weeks to 4.3 million consumers who were charged illegal advance fees or subjected to allegedly deceptive bait-and-switch advertising by Lexington Law, CreditRepair.com and their parent companies, according to the federal agency. The CFPB in August 2023 obtained a legal judgment against the credit repair businesses, with a district court ruling the companies had violated a law that prohibits such companies from collecting fees until at least six months after their promised results. The companies filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after the court ruling , shutting about 80% of their business operations, including telemarketing call centers. "Exploited vulnerable consumers" "Lexington Law and CreditRepair.com exploited vulnerable consumers who were trying to rebuild their credit, charging them illegal junk fees for results they hadn't delivered," CFPB Director Rohit Chopra stated in a news release . "This historic distribution of $1.8 billion demonstrates the CFPB's commitment to making consumers whole, even when the companies that harm them shut down or declare bankruptcy." Since its launch in 2011, the CFPB has distributed more than $3.3 billion to consumers harmed by a range of illegal practices, such as student loan and mortgage relief scams and predatory lending. The victims relief fund allows the CFPB to provide financial relief in cases where direction compensation from the violating company is not possible. The brainchild of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Massachusetts, the CFPB was established after the 2008 financial crisis. Funded by the Federal Reserve, the agency has weathered several legal challenges from opponents. The Supreme Court in May upheld its funding structure, which had been challenged by the payday lending industry. Still, the agency's efforts could prove short-lived amid calls from some Republicans to weaken the agency or get rid of it entirely. On Wednesday, billionaire Elon Musk — among those designated by President-elect Donald Trump to front an effort to dismantle government bureaucracy, slash regulations and cut government spending — called for deleting the CFPB, arguing in a post on social media that there are "too many duplicative regulatory agencies." When will the refund checks be sent? Payments will be sent between December and January to eligible consumers harmed by the companies, and those eligible do not need to take any action to receive a check. Those who think they are eligible but have not received a payment by mid-January can then contact JND Legal Administration at www.cfpb-lexlaw.org. Details about the distribution can be found here . How big will the payments be? The CFPB said the payments are based on a pro-rata share of fees paid by consumers to CreditRepair.com and Lexington Law, but that the payments might not cover all the fees they incurred. If the payments were divided evenly, each person would receive about $419. "If funds remain after the distribution is complete, additional checks may be sent to consumers who cashed their initial check. You don't need to take any additional action," the agency said. Can I file a claim? No, according to the agency. "There won't be opportunities to file claims for this redress case," it said. Is the refund check taxable? It's unlikely, because the checks are considered refunds for payments that consumers made to the credit repair companies, rather than taxable income, the CFPB said. "If you have tax-related questions, however, please contact a tax advisor," it added. Calin Georgescu, who ran independently, will face reformist Elena Lasconi in a Dec. 8. runoff after most local surveys predicted he would win less than 10% of the vote. Georgescu, 62, was ahead after nearly all ballots were counted with around 22.95%. According to local media, Georgescu in the past has praised Russian President Vladimir Putin as “a man who loves his country” and called Ukraine “an invented state.” He has also sparked controversy for describing Romanian fascist and nationalist leaders from the 1930s and 1940s as national heroes. Lasconi, of the progressive Save Romania Union party, or USR, followed with 19.17%. She beat by a slim margin incumbent Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu of the Social Democratic Party, or PSD, who stood at 19.15%. Lasconi on Monday warned that Romania is now in “a historical confrontation between preserving Romania’s young democracy ... and those who want to return Romania to the Russian sphere of influence.” She added: “Let us be very clear, Calin Georgescu is an open admirer of Vladimir Putin. He is open against NATO and the European Union ... He is for Romania’s isolation, which he calls neutrality ... And without NATO we are at the mercy of Russia.” Georgescu on Monday denied charges of being an extremist as “false, totally fake” and said he is “completely dedicated” to the Romanian people. “We remain directly linked to European values, but we must find our (own) values,” he said. “I’m not an extremist, I’m not a fascist, I’m a Romanian who loves his country.” Many observers have attributed Georgescu’s success to his TikTok account , which has 3.7 million likes and 274,000 followers. He gained huge traction and popularity in recent weeks. It is the first time in Romania’s 35-year post-communist history that the country’s most powerful party, the PSD, doesn't have a candidate in the second round of a presidential race, underscoring voters’ anti-establishment sentiment. Ciolacu's shocking defeat prompted him to submit his resignation as party leader on Monday. After polls closed on Sunday, the Central Election Bureau said 9.4 million people — about 52.5% of eligible voters — had cast ballots. Georgescu won 43.3% of the vote in Romania's large diaspora, while Lasconi got 26.8%. Romania's president serves a five-year term in the European Union and NATO member country and has significant decision-making powers in areas such as national security, foreign policy and judicial appointments. According to his website, Georgescu holds a doctorate in pedology, a branch of soil science, and held positions in Romania’s environment ministry in the 1990s. Between 1999 and 2012, he was a representative for Romania on the national committee of the United Nations Environment Program. His campaign positions included supporting farmers, reducing import dependence and ramping up local energy and food production. Georgescu's rising popularity will be tested when he faces Lasconi, who may attract more moderate voters who initially choose other candidates. Lasconi, a former journalist, told The Associated Press ahead of the vote that she saw corruption as one of Romania's biggest problems and expressed support for increased defense spending and continued aid to Ukraine. If she wins the final vote, she will be the first female president in Romania's history. Romania will also hold parliamentary elections on Dec. 1 that will determine the country’s next government and prime minister. It's Dana Holgorsen's 'focus on execution' that's impressing Matt Rhule — not just his play calls

BREAKING NEWS Anthony Albanese's government set to pass laws that will ban social media for under-16s World-first legislation expected to pass the Senate Trials underway for age-verification technology READ MORE: Meet the American who helped ruin Albanese Government's censorship plan By ANDREW BROWN FOR AAP Published: 23:35 GMT, 27 November 2024 | Updated: 23:55 GMT, 27 November 2024 e-mail 1 View comments Children younger than 16 are all but set to be banned from social media, with federal parliament poised to enact the world-first legislation. The Senate is expected on Thursday to pass the laws that would ban young people from platforms such as Facebook , Instagram and TikTok with bipartisan support. However, there has been concern the proposal has been rushed through parliament without proper scrutiny, given Australia would be the first country to implement such a ban. The ban would come into effect one year after the laws pass the parliament, with trials of age-verification technology still being carried out by the federal government. Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said the age limit would help children to be safe online. 'We know parents are concerned about the harms to children and we have taken a decision to support them,' she told parliament. 'Keeping Australians safe online requires decisive action and the Albanese government is delivering exactly that.' Criticism had been levelled at the ban after an inquiry into the laws ran for just three hours, with people also only given one day to hand in submissions, as well as a lack of consultation with young people themselves. The ban, which would see children under 16-years-old from accessing social media, would come into effect one year after the laws pass the parliament Minister Michelle Rowland has defended the laws, saying the government is supporting parents Suicide Prevention Australia executive director Christopher Stone said the laws had been rushed and would not address the issue of online harms. 'The government is running blindfolded into a brick wall by rushing this legislation,' he said. 'It has bypassed the rigorous consultation and scrutiny needed for such a far-reaching decision. 'Young Australians deserve evidence-based policies, not decisions made in haste. 'This legislation fails to consider the positive aspects of social media in supporting young people's mental health and sense of connection.' While the bill has enjoyed bipartisan support support, several coalition members have broken ranks on the issues. Tasmanian Liberal MP Bridget Archer crossed the floor to vote against the ban in the House of Representatives, while coalition senator Matt Canavan has also criticised the laws. Camping banned after 'secret' Aussie 4WD beach exposedPolitical chasms, wars, oppression ... it’s easy to feel hopeless and helpless watching these dark forces play out. Could any of us ever really make a meaningful difference in the face of so much devastation? Given the scale of the world’s problems, it might feel like the small acts of human connection and solidarity that you do have control over are like putting Band-Aids on bullet wounds. It can feel naive to imagine that small acts could make any global difference. As a psychologist, human connection researcher and audience member, I was inspired to hear musician Hozier offer a counterpoint at a performance this year. “The little acts of love and solidarity that we offer each other can have powerful impact ... ” he told the crowd. “I believe the core of people on the whole is good – I genuinely do. I’ll die on that hill.” I’m happy to report that the science agrees with him. Research shows that individual acts of kindness and connection can have a real impact on global change when these acts are collective. This is true at multiple levels: between individuals, between people and institutions, and between cultures. This relational micro-activism is a powerful force for change – and serves as an antidote to hopelessness because unlike global-scale issues, these small acts are within individuals’ control. Abstract becomes real through relationships Theoretically, the idea that small, interpersonal acts have large-scale impact is explained by what psychologists call cognitive dissonance: the discomfort you feel when your actions and beliefs don’t line up. For example, imagine two people who like each other. One believes that fighting climate change is crucial, and the other believes that climate change is a political ruse. Cognitive dissonance occurs: They like each other, but they disagree. People crave cognitive balance, so the more these two like each other, the more motivated they will be to hear each other out. According to this model, then, the more you strengthen your relationships through acts of connection, the more likely you’ll be to empathize with those other individual perspectives. When these efforts are collective, they can increase understanding, compassion and community in society at large. Issues like war and oppression can feel overwhelming and abstract, but the abstract becomes real when you connect to someone you care about. So, does this theory hold up when it comes to real-world data? Small acts of connection shift attitudes Numerous studies support the power of individual acts of connection to drive larger-scale change. For instance, researchers studying the political divide in the U.S. found that participants self-identifying as Democrats or Republicans “didn’t like” people in the other group largely due to negative assumptions about the other person’s morals. People also said they valued morals like fairness, respect, loyalty and a desire to prevent harm to others. I’m intentionally leaving out which political group preferred which traits – they all sound like positive attributes, don’t they? Even though participants thought they didn’t like each other based on politics, they also all valued traits that benefit relationships. One interpretation of these findings is that the more people demonstrate to each other, act by act, that they are loyal friends and community members who want to prevent harm to others, the more they might soften large-scale social and political disagreements. Even more convincingly, another study found that Hungarian and Romanian students – people from ethnic groups with a history of social tensions – who said they had strong friendships with each other also reported improved attitudes toward the other group. Having a rocky friendship with someone from the other group actually damaged attitudes toward the other ethnic group as a whole. Again, nurturing the quality of relationships, even on an objectively small scale, had powerful implications for reducing large-scale tensions. In another study, researchers examined prejudice toward what psychologists call an out-group: a group that you don’t belong to, whether based on ethnicity, political affiliation or just preference for dogs versus cats. They asked participants to reflect on the positive qualities of someone they knew, or on their own positive characteristics. When participants wrote about the positive qualities of someone else, rather than themselves, they later reported lower levels of prejudice toward an out-group – even if the person they wrote about had no connection to that out-group. Here, moving toward appreciation of the other, rather than away from prejudice, was an effective way to transform preconceived beliefs. So, small acts of connection can shift personal attitudes. But can they really affect societies? From one-on-one to society-wide Every human being is embedded in their own network with the people and world around them, what psychologists call their social ecology. Compassionate change at any level of someone’s social ecology – internally, interpersonally or structurally – can affect all the other levels, in a kind of positive feedback loop, or upward spiral. For instance, both system-level anti-discrimination programming in schools and interpersonal support between students act reciprocally to shape school environments for students from historically marginalized groups. Again, individual acts play a key role in these positive domino effects. Even as a human connection researcher, I’ve been surprised by how much I and others have progressed toward mutual understanding by simply caring about each other. But what are small acts of connection, after all, but acts of strengthening relationships, which strengthen communities, which influence societies? In much of my clinical work, I use a model called social practice — or “intentional community-building” – as a form of therapy for people recovering from serious mental illnesses, like schizophrenia. And if intentional community-building can address some of the most debilitating states of the human psyche, I believe it follows that, writ large, it could help address the most debilitating states of human societies as well. Simply put, science supports the idea that moving toward each other in small ways can be transformational. I’ll die on that hill too. Murdoch, 93, had sought to change the terms of his irrevocable family trust to ensure his older son, Lachlan, would have sole control over his media companies News Corp. and Fox Corp. News Corp. owns influential publications such as the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, Investor’s Business Daily and Dow Jones. Fox Corp. is the parent company of Fox News and the Fox broadcast network. But a Nevada probate commissioner rejected the request to amend the trust that had been opposed by Murdoch’s other children named in the trust — Prudence, James and Elisabeth. In the current version of the trust, the four eldest siblings, including Lachlan, were set to jointly inherit control of the businesses. That commissioner, Edmund J. Gorman Jr., said in a ruling over the weekend that the elder Murdoch and Lachlan Murdoch had acted in “bad faith” in their attempt to rewrite the trust, according to a sealed court filing obtained by the New York Times . “The effort was an attempt to stack the deck in Lachlan Murdoch’s favor after Rupert Murdoch’s passing so that his succession would be immutable,” Gorman wrote in the filing. “The play might have worked; but an evidentiary hearing, like a showdown in a game of poker, is where gamesmanship collides with the facts and at its conclusion, all the bluffs are called and the cards lie face up.” While the Nevada proceedings were behind closed doors, the outcome had enormous implications because Murdoch controls the world’s most influential conservative-leaning media empire. The trust was established following Murdoch’s divorce from his second wife, Anna Torv Murdoch Mann, the mother of Elisabeth, Lachlan and James. As part of that 1998 divorce settlement, Murdoch agreed to set up the trust that would give control of his empire to his then-four adult children after the mogul’s passing. The trust gave Anna’s children and Murdoch’s eldest daughter from his first marriage, Prudence, equal voting shares — in a bid to establish a power-sharing arrangement to oversee his corporate empire. Murdoch’s two daughters from his marriage to Wendi Deng were given economic stakes in the trust, but not voting shares. A lawyer for Rupert Murdoch did not respond immediately to a request for comment, nor did News Corp. Fox Corp. referred comment to Murdoch’s lawyer. Prudence, James and Elisabeth Murdoch said in a statement that “We welcome Commissioner Gorman’s decision and hope that we can move beyond this litigation to focus on strengthening and rebuilding relationships among all family members.” The elder Murdoch had claimed changing the trust was necessary to preserve the conservative bent of his media properties, which would maintain shareholder value for all the heirs. Lachlan is known for sharing his father’s political views, and since last year has served as sole chairman of News Corp. and executive chairman of Fox. The three other siblings are more politically moderate.

Rupert Murdoch has been dealt a setback in his bid to steer control of his empire to his son Lachlan after the media mogul dies.
