The S&P 500 climbed 0.6% to top the all-time high it set a couple weeks ago. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 123 points, or 0.3%, to its own record set the day before, while the Nasdaq composite gained 0.6% as Microsoft and Big Tech led the way. People are also reading... Stock markets abroad mostly fell after President-elect Trump said he plans to impose sweeping new tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China once he takes office. But the movements were mostly modest. Stock indexes were down 0.1% in Shanghai and nearly flat in Hong Kong, while Canada’s main index edged down by less than 0.1%. Trump has often praised the use of tariffs , but investors are weighing whether his latest threat will actually become policy or is just an opening point for negotiations. For now, the market seems to be taking it more as the latter. The consequences otherwise for markets and the global economy could be painful. Unless the United States can prepare alternatives for the autos, energy products and other goods that come from Mexico, Canada and China, such tariffs would raise the price of imported items all at once and make households poorer, according to Carl Weinberg and Rubeela Farooqi, economists at High Frequency Economics. They would also hurt profit margins for U.S. companies, while raising the threat of retaliatory tariffs by other countries. And unlike tariffs in Trump’s first term, his latest proposal would affect products across the board. General Motors sank 9%, and Ford Motor fell 2.6% because both import automobiles from Mexico. Constellation Brands, which sells Modelo and other Mexican beer brands in the United States, dropped 3.3%. The value of the Mexican peso fell 1.8% against the U.S. dollar. Beyond the pain such tariffs would cause U.S. households and businesses, they could also push the Federal Reserve to slow or even halt its cuts to interest rates. The Fed had just begun easing its main interest rate from a two-decade high a couple months ago to offer support for the job market . While lower interest rates can boost the economy, they can also offer more fuel for inflation. “Many” officials at the Fed’s last meeting earlier this month said they should lower rates gradually, according to minutes of the meeting released Tuesday afternoon. The talk about tariffs overshadowed another mixed set of profit reports from U.S. retailers that answered few questions about how much more shoppers can keep spending. They’ll need to stay resilient after helping the economy avoid a recession, despite the high interest rates imposed by the Fed to get inflation under control. A report on Tuesday from the Conference Board said confidence among U.S. consumers improved in November, but not by as much as economists expected. Kohl’s tumbled 17% after its results for the latest quarter fell short of analysts’ expectations. CEO Tom Kingsbury said sales remain soft for apparel and footwear. A day earlier, Kingsbury said he plans to step down as CEO in January. Ashley Buchanan, CEO of Michaels and a retail veteran, will replace him. Best Buy fell 4.9% after likewise falling short of analysts’ expectations. Dick’s Sporting Goods topped forecasts for the latest quarter thanks to a strong back-to-school season, but its stock lost an early gain to fall 1.4%. Still, more stocks rose in the S&P 500 than fell. J.M. Smucker had one of the biggest gains and climbed 5.7% after topping analysts’ expectations for the latest quarter. CEO Mark Smucker credited strength for its Uncrustables, Meow Mix, Café Bustelo and Jif brands. Big Tech stocks also helped prop up U.S. indexes. Gains of 3.2% for Amazon and 2.2% for Microsoft were the two strongest forces lifting the S&P 500. All told, the S&P 500 rose 34.26 points to 6,021.63. The Dow gained 123.74 to 44,860.31, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 119.46 to 19,174.30. In the bond market, Treasury yields held relatively steady following their big drop from a day before driven by relief following Trump’s pick for Treasury secretary. The yield on the 10-year Treasury inched up to 4.29% from 4.28% late Monday, but it’s still well below the 4.41% level where it ended last week. In the crypto market, bitcoin continued to pull back after topping $99,000 for the first time late last week. It’s since dipped back toward $91,000, according to CoinDesk. It’s a sharp turnaround from the bonanza that initially took over the crypto market following Trump’s election. That boom had also appeared to have spilled into some corners of the stock market. (RSS)Most Americans who marry say “I do” between 25 and 30 — ages when serious illness is probably not the first thing on their minds. But in a way, tying the knot is a major health decision. For men, just being married is a predictor of living longer. For women, the picture is more complex. Among men with prostate cancer, married men survive longer than single men; married men are also less likely to die of cardiovascular disease. And that’s not because healthier men are likelier to get married. In fact, “research shows the reverse is true,” concludes a summary of the studies by Harvard Health Publishing. “Unhealthy men actually marry earlier, are less likely to divorce, and are more likely to remarry.” “There is a huge literature showing that husbands benefit from their wives’ support in terms of mortality and health outcomes — much more than the other way around,” says Joan Monin, an associate professor of public health at the Yale School of Medicine. (Most of the research focuses on opposite-sex couples.) When it’s the wife who is sick, husbands sometimes struggle to support her, according to several studies from the 1990s through the 2000s. Multiple studies found that women were much more likely to donate kidneys to their husbands than husbands were to do the same for their lives. Some doctors and nurses say they still see those sorts of gender imbalances today. The husbands who step up share some common attributes. They already participate in more household tasks than the average husband. They are more likely to be happy in the marriage. And perhaps most importantly, they tend to have egalitarian views of marriage, rather than seeing themselves as the breadwinner. This doesn’t mean they necessarily earn the exact same amount as their wives; but they view the marriage as an equal partnership. For couples, this should be a powerful reminder that a marriage-of-equals isn’t just about being “politically correct” or “woke.” Nor is an egalitarian marriage only a matter of taming the stresses of parenthood, or evening out who gets the most leisure time and who carries the family’s mental load. For wives, an egalitarian marriage can be a matter of life and death. Really. Patients with unmet care needs are at a greater risk of hospital readmission and, yes, dying. Conversely, good at-home caregiving is associated with better rates of recovery. Picking up medication, helping a spouse bathe, offering emotional support, shopping and cooking — it all matters. And yet married female patients have been, on average, only about half as likely to have their needs met as married male patients, according to research by Susan Masterson Allen, professor emerita of health services, policy and practice at Brown University. Sometimes taking care of an ailing spouse is as basic as making the right phone calls. One study Allen worked on involved a sample of 90,000 disabled military veterans, 97 percent of whom were male. They were all eligible for supplemental government benefits, but only about 10 percent had signed up. When Allen and her collaborators looked at what distinguished the enrollees, “a strong predictor was being married,” she says. It was the wives who’d taken the trouble to make the calls and do the paperwork. A likely reason for the low overall uptake? Very few of these vets were married — only some 20 percent. Some of these gender imbalances may be changing. One of the most recent studies of adult-to-adult caregiving, published earlier this year, found that men and women spent about the same amount of time taking care of a partner with a spinal cord injury, with the exception of tasks related to housekeeping. Women still spend more time on these chores than men do, but the gap is narrowing — not because men are doing more around the house, but because younger women are opting to do less. Women being choosier with their time? That represents a type of progress. But it’s not enough. Many men still see themselves as “breadwinners” — even when their wives earn more money. And the research suggests these men are not as committed to helping when their wives get sick. Perhaps they are so focused on contributing financially that they overlook other forms of support. Or they fear the impact of caregiving on their careers: One of the biggest reasons husbands give for not spending more time caring for ailing wives (or donating kidneys to them) is concern about missing work. Maybe the real mystery isn’t why some husbands provide more care but why wives so consistently do. Women are socialized from a young age to view caregiving as a core feminine duty. It’s so deeply ingrained that many people will tell you that women are just better at it — that it’s innately feminine. But studies find that both men and women suffer similar rates of stress associated with caregiving. There is no female “caregiver gene.” Of course, people can change. For many men, says Yale’s Monin, taking care of an ailing wife can open up a new, care-oriented sense of identity. NoneLife insurers in Bangladesh saw some 3.47 lakh policies discontinued in the January-September period this year amid worsening financial health of clients, political changeover and repeated flooding devastating lives and livelihoods in vast areas of the country. Besides, unclear policy data and fragile customer confidence in the local insurance sector contributed to policy discontinuations, according to sector insiders. In 2023, some 15.42 lakh customers of a total of 36 life insurance companies saw their policies lapse, according to regulatory data, and the trend did not see much improvement this year. In the first nine months of 2024, Delta Life Insurance Company Limited topped the policy lapse list, with 56,338 of its clients shelving different types of insurance payments. On the list, National Life Insurance Company Ltd and Popular Life Insurance Company Ltd appeared second and third respectively, according to the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (Idra). Pragati Life Insurance PLC saw 23,023 of its policies lapse, the fourth highest, while Alpha Islami Life Insurance Ltd saw 21,917 of its life policies discontinued. A policy lapse occurs when policyholders fail to pay their premiums on time, leading to the cancellation of insurance coverage. "Lapsed policies are bad for both customers and insurers," said SM Ibrahim Hossain, director of the Bangladesh Insurance Academy, a state-run institute that trains insurance professionals. For customers, he explained that a policy lapse means losing the safety net that could protect them against unforeseen events. For insurers, it leads to revenue loss and negative impacts on financial stability and customer relationships, he added. However, Uttam Kumar Sadhu, chief executive officer of Delta Life Insurance Company, is optimistic about getting back "a large number" of their lost clients by the end of 2024. "Customers often face financial crises due to various reasons. Due to this, they understandably cannot pay the money on time," said Sadhu, whose company had around 12.43 lakh policies in September after subtracting the discontinued ones. "After three to four months, a large portion of them will revive," he said. "This has been observed in the past as well." The CEO said initiatives have been taken to provide rewards and incentives to revive the lapsed policies. The results of the improvement will be available by the end of December. Nura Alam Siddikie Ovee, chief executive officer of Alpha Islami Life Insurance Limited, said the main reason behind policy discontinuation is the financial crisis. "Many people are now in financial hardship due to high inflation and the economic fallout stemming from the political changeover in August," he added. In addition, as many insurance agents are changing companies, taking their customers to their new firms, this is another reason many policies have been discontinued, he said. Ovee also pointed out that many policyholders were convinced to buy policies but later found those did not apply to them. "Some policies have also been cancelled due to this." Md Jalalul Azim, managing director of Pragati Life Insurance, said one of the reasons behind the policy discontinuation was the fierce nationwide protest in July-August, which ultimately hurt incomes and slowed down the overall economy. Besides, he said flooding in August and September in many areas, including Cumilla, Feni, Lakshmipur, Noakhali, Chattogram and Sylhet, deterred their agents from collecting premiums from many clients on time, resulting in policy lapses. Azim mentioned that those policies can be reactivated by paying late fees. However, they have waived the fees until December this year to encourage customers to renew the policies. Md Kazim Uddin, managing director of National Life Insurance PLC, said many of their customers had their policies matured recently, but problem banks could not pay them due to a liquidity crisis. This has created a confidence crisis among customers, which has had a negative impact on the insurance sector. In view of this, many customers did not deposit the insurance premium and a lot of policies have lapsed, he said. Apart from this, due to high inflation, which has been above 9 percent since March last year, it has become difficult for many people to maintain their normal lives, he said. People are breaking their savings to meet family expenses, he said, adding that as a result, many are unable to deposit premiums on time, resulting in policy lapses. Zahangir Alam, a director and the spokesperson of the Idra, told The Daily Star last Thursday that they are pursuing insurers in various ways to keep the number of discontinued policies low. Besides, companies that have the highest number of policy lapses are being monitored closely, he said. In the last 14 years, more than 26 lakh insurance policies have lapsed in Bangladesh. In 2009, the total number of policies was nearly 1.12 crore while it fell to 85.88 lakh in 2023, according to Idra data.

Rutgers tries to avoid another Ivy loss when Columbia visitsAlexander Ludwig spent years of his life cold, covered in mud and fake blood, in full costume, swinging an axe or a sword in his role as the ferocious Bjorn Ironside on the acclaimed series Vikings. But the discomfort he experienced there was nothing compared to what he faced on his new series, the post-acocalyptic drama Earth Abides. But instead of being taxing on his body, his role as loner Ish in the haunting six-part series took its toll mentally and emotionally. His character spends the early part of the series totally and utterly alone. “It was the hardest thing I had ever done,” Ludwig, who also starred in The Hunger Games, tells STM from his home in Austin, Texas. “I knew this was going to be tough, but nothing before — and I don’t think anything I will ever do after this — comes close. “Vikings was physically one of the hardest things I ever did — it was such an uncomfortable show — but this, on an emotional level, I knew it was going to require all of me. And the places I had to go emotionally . . . It was crazy what was demanded of me, especially in that first episode. Earth Abides adds to a recent smorgasbord of dystopian, post-apocalypse shows. Turn on the TV and you could be forgiven for thinking it’s the end of the world: The Walking Dead, The Last Of Us, Silo, Fallout, heck, even The Handmaid’s Tale. A pessimistic person — which, let’s face it, is a lot of us living through these uncertain times — could be excused for thinking these shows are some sort of twisted road map for our survival. But if you think this series is just another in a long line of harrowing tales of broken worlds and broken spirits, you’d be mistaken: Ludwig wants viewers with apocalypse fatigue to know that Earth Abides hits different notes. In this, Ludwig’s character is not fighting zombies or half-alive fungus-ridden monsters. He’s trying to survive in a world that has been all but wiped out by an unspecified pandemic. Given what we’ve all been through these past few years, it is a terrifying proposition that hits close to home. As the series begins, Ish has been in and out of a coma for weeks after being bitten by a venomous snake at his remote cabin in the woods. He emerges from his fever to find an empty and eerily quiet world. As he wanders through deserted towns, sighting bodies that have fallen where they stood, a realisation dawns on him — he might be the only person on Earth left alive. “Look, I love the monster shows as much as the next guy, and I love all those post-apocalypse series — I totally get it,” Ludwig says. “But this just isn’t that, remotely. This is actually (more about): what would actually happen if a pandemic wiped out 98 per cent of the population and you had to start again? “What is life? What is important in life? And at a time when I feel like we are more divided than most of us would like to believe, if there’s any message that I hope gets through from the show, it’s the importance of each other, and our community.” In the series, after being on his own for what feels like an eternity, Ish realises there is at least one other person living nearby who has also survived the mysterious plague: a woman named Emma, played by Jessica Frances Dukes. He sees smoke from a chimney at a home nearby and it’s a glimmer of hope. In a recent interview , Ludwig admitted that after he was cast, he reached out to Hollywood actor Will Smith, who famously shot the 2007 film I Am Legend, which mines similar territory, saying he felt that he was “the only person who could possibly understand” what it was like to film that first episode over four weeks with no other co-stars. Before Ish meets Emma, he does have one other companion: a stray dog called Lucky whom he befriends on his travels. Ludwig says it was a relief to finally have a co-star, even one that couldn’t speak back. “I think it made it so much easier for me to convey (the loneliness that Ish is feeling), because that is what I was actually feeling at the time — and I didn’t expect that,” he explains. “I was the only actor on that set, and it’s not like I got time to talk to the crew — we were ‘go, go, go’ — so I really did feel totally and utterly alone. When I finally got Lucky, I felt the way Ish felt — I was relieved.” Earth Abides feels as though it has come along at precisely the right time, as the world navigates this post-COVID, politically unstable period. For Ludwig, who is phenomenal in that eerie first episode, it felt particularly prescient, and as though his own life had come full circle. “I’d be willing to bet that most of us have asked that question: what would I have done if COVID took out everybody?” he says. “And that is what we are exploring in the show: this is about people. There are no zombies, no monsters, it’s all about what you do if you had to start again.” As Ludwig explains, Ish is a solitary guy who loves being by himself — until it’s forced on him. “The next thing he has to do is fight for the survival of himself, and humanity, and he goes in search of others,” he says. “We explore what happens when another tribe comes in and somebody on that tribe wants to destroy everything you have built, and what happens when the animals take back the earth that belonged to them.” Just like his character, Ludwig’s life was changed irreversibly by COVID-19. “During the pandemic, my wife and I met, and within nine months we were married. It just kind of expedited the process for all of the life changes,” he explains. They now have two children together. When the script for Earth Abides first crossed his desk, he was emerging from that strange and intense period of his life. “I think there will always be some sort of trauma that everyone experienced through the pandemic, and I know the lockdown was not easy, especially in Australia,” he muses. “In Canada (where the series was filmed) it was similar.” Ludwig explains, “I was in the middle of filming Bad Boys 4 (Ride Or Die) when I got a call from my manager saying ‘(the show’s executive producer) Michael Wright is very interested in you playing Ish’. “He liked my work on Vikings, where I got to show this tremendous arc from the ages of early teens to forties. “I always thought there was no way I would ever have the chance to do something like that again. Of course, fate would have it that that was exactly what I got to do again (with this show), but on a totally different level.” Earth Abides is based on the 1949 sci-fi novel of the same name by George R. Stewart. Ludwig had not read it until he was approached about the show, but when he did, he “fell totally in love with it — it was almost biblical, and I couldn’t believe it was written in 1949”. Ludwig felt an intense personal connection to the story, partly because his life was ticking along almost in parallel to that of his character’s. “It really was the gift of gifts for any actor,” he says of his role. “I have been very lucky (in the parts I have played), but I don’t know, in a really crazy turn of fate, my personal life was parallel to this story. “My wife was eight and a half months pregnant just as Emma (who strikes up a relationship with Ludwig’s character) was pregnant and about to give birth. My wife was back in Texas. “Without giving too much away, when something very, very pivotal happened to my son in the show, my actual son was born.” But the coincidences didn’t stop there. “We shot this in my hometown of Vancouver, Canada, and there were scenes that were 10 minutes from my high school and where I lived with my family. It was crazy, this shoot,” he adds. “I drew from all of it, and my connection to Jessica (who plays Emma) was so strong.” They sparked up a close friendship during filming, leaning on one another during many of their emotionally fraught scenes. “She is phenomenal, and not just as an actor,” he says. “I said to her, ‘This is going to change your life’, because people are going to watch her and go, ‘holy s..., this woman is just a force’. “Like Emma, my wife is a super mum, and she was doing all of this on her own while I was getting to live my dream in Vancouver. I saw so much of her in Jessica. I just felt like there were so many things that I was playing off from my real life. “It just became a really, really introspective performance from me.” It all added up to a once-in-a-lifetime filming experience for Ludwig. And though he went to some admittedly “tough” places for his performance, he feels fortunate to have been given the experience. “I don’t know if it’s healthy to think about this (type of thing) all the time, and I do go there more often than I probably should,” he admits. “Like, what does it all mean? “But that’s the beauty in this show: it might take you there for a second, but then it shows you that what it all means is that we are here to be with each other and to experience this beautiful world together.”

To raise that limit, purchase a Declaration of Higher Value for each leg of the trip. The charge is $0.50 for each $100, in which case the payout limit is $2,500. For Delta Air Lines, passengers are entitled to up to $3,800 in baggage compensation, though how much you'll receive depends on your flight. Delta will pay up to $2,080 for delayed, lost, and damaged baggage for international travellers, almost half of what U.S. domestic passengers can claim. If your flight is marked delayed for more than 30 minutes, approach the gate agent and politely request food and hotel vouchers to be used within the airport or nearby. Delayed/Cancelled Flights Different air carriers and jurisdictions have their own compensation policies when flights are delayed or cancelled. For example, under European Union rules, passengers may receive up to 600 Euros, even when travelling on a non-EU carrier. Similarly, the DOT states that travellers are entitled to a refund "if the airline cancelled a flight, regardless of the reason, and the consumer chooses not to travel." However, US rules regarding delays are complicated. Some air carriers, such as Air Canada, do not guarantee their flight schedules. They're also not liable for cancellations or changes due to "force majeure" such as weather conditions or labour disruptions. If the delay is overnight, only out-of-town passengers will be offered hotel accommodation. Nevertheless, many airlines do offer some compensation for the inconvenience. If your flight is marked delayed for more than 30 minutes, approach the gate agent and politely request food and hotel vouchers to be used within the airport or nearby. Flight Compensation in the U.S. In terms of cash compensation, what you'll get can differ significantly based on things like departure location, time, carrier, and ticket class. The DOT offers a helpful delay and cancellations dashboard designed to keep travellers informed about their compensation rights. The dashboard is particularly helpful because, as the DOT states on its website, "whether you are entitled to a refund depends on a lot of factors—such as the length of the delay, the length of the flight, and your particular circumstances." Flight Compensation in Canada The Canadian Transportation Agency is proposing air passenger protection regulations that guarantee financial compensation to travellers experiencing flight delays and cancellations, with the level of compensation varying depending on the situation and how much control the air carrier had. The proposed regulations include the following: A plane must return to its gate after three hours on the tarmac. Minimum requirements will be set for procuring food, drink, lavatories, ventilation, and access to electronic communications during the delay. For larger airlines, payouts will range from $400 for a 3-6 hour delay, to $700 for 6-9 hours, and $1,000 for more than nine hours. For smaller carriers, the compensation would be $125, $250, and $500, respectively. Here's the loophole: If the delay is related to the air carrier's maintenance problems, no compensation is required. The airline is obligated to complete the passenger's itinerary. If the new ticket is for a lower class of service, the air carrier would have to refund the cost difference; if the booking is in a higher class of service, passengers cannot be charged extra. If the passenger declines the ticket, the airline must give a full refund, in addition to the prescribed compensation. For overnight delays, the air carrier needs to provide hotel accommodation and transportation free-of-charge. Again, if you are unsatisfied, the Canadian Transportation Agency or Department of Transportation may advocate on your behalf. Bumped Off the Flight Passengers get bumped because airlines overbook. When this happens, the air carrier must compensate you. For international flights in the US, the rate is 200% of your one-way fare to your final destination, with a $675 maximum. If the airline does not make travel arrangements for you, the payout is 400% of your one-way fare to a maximum of $1,350. To qualify, you must check-in by the stated deadline, which on international flights can be up to 3 hours ahead. Keep in mind that if you accept the cash, you are no longer entitled to any further compensation, nor are you guaranteed to be rebooked on a direct flight or similar type of seat. Don't be too quick to give up your boarding pass. Negotiate for the best compensation deal that would include cash, food and hotel vouchers, flight upgrade, lounge passes, as well as mileage points. But avoid being too greedy—if the gate attendant is requesting volunteers and you wait too long, you'll miss the offer. According to Air Canada's tariff, if a passenger is involuntarily bumped, they'll receive $200, in cash or bank draft, for up to a two-hour delay; $400 for a 2-6 hours delay; and $800 if the delay is over six hours.
