The Cincinnati Bearcats men's basketball team has gotten off to a fast start this season in more ways than one. The No. 16 Bearcats have raced to a 5-0 record while outscoring their opponents by more than 31 points per game, with just one team (Northern Kentucky) coming within 16 points. Cincinnati is averaging a robust 87 points per game with one of the more efficient offenses in college basketball. Cincinnati will look to continue that hot streak when it plays host to Alabama State in nonconference action Wednesday evening. Cincinnati has punished opposing defenses in a variety of ways this season. Despite being the No. 14 offense in the nation in Ken Pomeroy's efficiency ratings, the Bearcats aren't among the nation's leaders in pace. Still, they take advantage of those opportunities when they are there. "Us playing fast is something we want to do," Cincinnati forward Dillon Mitchell said. "When I was being recruited here, that was something Coach (Wes) Miller wanted to do. "There could be games where we're not making shots or something is off, but one thing is we're gonna push the ball, play hard and play fast. That's something he preaches. We'll be in shape and get rebounds." Mitchell is fresh off a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds in Cincinnati's 81-58 road win at Georgia Tech Saturday. He is one of four Bearcats to average double figures in scoring this season. That balance was on display once again against the Yellow Jackets, with Connor Hickman and Jizzle James also scoring 14 points each and Simas Lukosius contributing 12 points. In that game, Cincinnati sank 51.6 percent of its shots while regularly getting out into transition with 16 fastbreak points, while winning the rebounding battle 36-29. "Any time you get a road win over a quality, Power 4 team, you're gonna feel good about it," Miller said. "I was pleased with our effort." Lukosius is scoring 16.6 points per game, while James is at 14.0 points, followed by Mitchell at 12.4, while he also grabs a team-best 8.6 rebounds. Alabama State (3-3) has a tough task ahead, especially when considering its 97-78 loss at Akron Sunday, which ended a three-game winning streak. The Hornets allowed the Zips to shoot 46.4 percent from the field and were 53-32 in the rebounding battle. Alabama State gave up a season high in points, after playing the likes of LSU and UNLV earlier this season. Akron standout Nate Johnson lit up Alabama State for 25 points, as the game got away from the Hornets in the second half to keep them winless in true road games. Alabama leading scorers CJ Hines and TJ Madlock still got theirs against Akron, scoring 19 and 17 points, respectively. They were joined in double figures by reserve Tyler Mack (18 points), but recent history says they'll need more help to keep up with the Bearcats. Hines leads the Hornets with 15.7 points per game, while Madlock contributes 14.5 points. In previous Akron Basketball Classic wins last week against Omaha and Lamar, Alabama State featured at least four double-digit scorers in each game. --Field Level MediaNone

Right now, Amazon is offering a major price reduction on the Shark FlexStyle Limited Edition Teal Gift Set 5-in-1 Air Styler , bringing it down from £319.99 to £226.75. With a close to £100 saving, shoppers are snapping up the styler as a Christmas gift, saying it rivals the popular Dyson Airwrap. The Air Styler allows you to both dry and style your hair at the same time and has five attachments: auto-wrap curlers, a frizz fighter, a finishing tool, an oval brush and a concentrator. The brand proudly advertise the Air Styler as suitable for 'any skill set' and for 'all hairkind'. Boasting minimal heat damage thanks to consistent air temperatures and 'no extreme heat', the end result should be smooth, frizz-free styles that last. From 551 global ratings, the five in one styler has earned 4.4 out of five stars overall. I rarely used to blow dry my hair because it always felt so dry afterwards. The air this produces is something else!! So glad I took the leap and ordered this over the Dyson one. Such better value !" They continued: "I love all the attachments too and the curling tongs are epic! I actually can't wait to use them more when I cut my hair above shoulder height because I feel I'll get the most out of it then!" A second shared: "The Shark FlexStyle Limited Edition Teal Gift Set is an absolute game-changer for anyone who loves experimenting with hairstyles but wants to avoid heat damage. I bought this for my wife, and she’s been raving about it ever since!" They continued: "This 5-in-1 tool is incredibly versatile. The auto-wrap curlers are a standout — they create bouncy, long-lasting curls with minimal effort. My wife loves how easy it is to switch between tools, from the oval brush for volume to the concentrator for sleek straight styles. The FrizzFighter finishing tool really lives up to its name, leaving her hair smooth and shiny every time." "The adjustable heat and airflow settings make it suitable for all hair types, and the no-heat-damage technology ensures her hair feels healthier even with regular use. The teal finish looks stunning, and the included clips and storage bag keep everything organised and ready to use." However, this customer didn't have such a positive experience, they said: "I initially loved this and couldn’t believe how beautiful my hair was. Unfortunately within five minutes my curls had gone. I’ve tried it with dry hair, damp hair, used the cold setting to set the curl, every type of product, to no avail." My hair is poker straight so not the easiest to curl, but expected more from something with this price tag." If you don't mind the price, the Dyson Airwrap in Strawberry Bronze/Blush Pink is currently on sale for £399.99 from £479.99 direct from Dyson or from Boots. Or, for something a little more wallet-friendly, Boots has slashed £30 off the REVLON One-StepTM Blow-Dry Multi Air Styler 5-in-1 , bringing it down to £49.99 from £79.99.
South Korea’s president briefly declared martial law Tuesday, suspending civil rights, barricading parliament with troops, and putting media under government control. Lawmakers moved to quickly override it, and South Korea’s president said he would lift his declaration. Could such a constitutional crisis happen here in the United States? President-elect Donald Trump has shown some clear authoritarian tendencies . In his first term, he raised the idea of using martial law to stay in power after he lost reelection; he sent in the National Guard to disperse racial-justice protesters; and one of his last days in office, he refused for hours to call off his supporters as they attacked the Capitol.Artificial intelligence (AI) and tech stocks dragged the Nasdaq Composite ( ^IXIC -1.44% ) down as much as 2.4% at one point today. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ( ^DJI -0.57% ) lost as much as 500 points in a holiday-shortened week usually powered by a Santa Claus rally that has failed to materialize thus far. Shares of artificial intelligence chipmaker Broadcom ( AVGO -1.50% ) and e-commerce giant Amazon ( AMZN -1.49% ) traded close to 2% lower as of 2:26 p.m. ET today. Shares of electric carmaker Rivian ( RIVN -2.49% ) were down close to 3%. Feeling the pressure from rising yields Usually, the subdued final week of the year is met with a Santa Claus rally , which includes the last five trading days of the year and the first two in January. Stocks tend to move higher in the year's final days, with most investors on vacation and trading volume light. These seven days of the year have averaged gains of 1.3% since 1950. While there is still time left, the market has underperformed so far. As of this writing, the broader benchmark S&P 500 ( ^GSPC -0.98% ) was down about 0.4% since the close of trading on Dec. 23. Amazon, Broadcom , and other tech names in the "Magnificent Seven," which consume a large portion of the broader market due to their gigantic market caps, led the declines today as big tech and artificial intelligence names finally showed some weakness, although they've still had a fantastic year. The 10-year Treasury yield advanced past 4.60% today, the highest level seen since May. Yields have zoomed higher ever since the Federal Reserve's final meeting of the year, in which Fed chair Jerome Powell and the rest of the Fed's rate-setting policy indicated they would be more cautious on future interest rate cuts, given the strength of the economy. Most traders betting on federal funds rate futures only think the Fed will cut rates once next year. However, not all are discouraged by the sell-off today. "The nation is experiencing a collective sigh of relief after navigating through a contentious election cycle and unusual market dynamics to end 2024 with strong year-to-date gains," Todd Ahlsten, chief investment officer at Parnassus Investments, told CNBC today. "Looking ahead to 2025, the markets are expected to broaden and improve." The sell-off isn't surprising Today's sell-off can't be too surprising for investors, given the market's great year, high tech and AI valuations, and yields moving sharply higher. Higher yields are less favorable for riskier stocks because investing in safer Treasury bonds becomes more appealing. Many analysts and investors also use the 10-year Treasury yield as the discount rate when discounting cash flows in their financial models, and a higher discount rate leads to a lower present value of cash flows. It's a holiday-shortened week, so I wouldn't read too much into today's move, but Amazon and Broadcom trade at huge valuations, while Rivian isn't profitable yet. If yields remain elevated, I expect these stocks to pull back at some point.
Luigi Mangione pleaded not guilty in the assassination of UnitedHeathcare CEO Brian Thompson on Monday. Following the plea, an uptick in donations to Mangione’s legal defense fund rolled in on the crowdfunding site GiveSendGo. At present, the sum sits at a staggering $212,426. “We are not here to celebrate violence, but we do believe in the constitutional right of fair legal representation,” a statement on the crowdfunding page reads. GoFundMe, another popular crowdfunding site, previously pulled all campaigns supporting Mangione. While the public response to the alleged killer has ranged from utter vitriol to admiration, the fact that so many have rushed to donate to Mangione’s defense further demonstrates how many feel sympathetic to the alleged killer, or even agree with the cause he’s become the face of. So does a recent survey from NORC at the University of Chicago, which found that, while 8 out of 10 U.S. adults believe the person who killed Brian Thompson bears the responsibility for the murder, 7 in 10 shared the belief that healthcare companies are also to blame. They said that proceedings like healthcare denials for coverage bear “a moderate amount” of responsibility for the Dec. 4 slaying. Regardless of public opinion, the 26-year-old Maryland man now faces 11 counts, including three murder charges, and a terrorist charge. Last week, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, whose office is prosecuting the case, said the crime “was a killing that was intended to evoke terror.” Prosecutors have also brought a four-count criminal complaint that could invoke the death penalty. | Anna Schecter, who covers crime and safety for CBS News , told the outlet in an on-air interview that there is a possibility under a Trump department of justice that the death penalty could be sought, though it would be “highly unusual.” Schecter pressed that the death penalty is typically reserved for terrorist charges, and “interestingly, the only terrorism charge he’s facing is coming from the Manhattan District Attorney’s office—that first degree murder charge,” rather than any federal charges. In court on Monday, Mangione’s attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo told the judge that, although her client has cooperated with law enforcement every step of the way, Mangione is being treated like a guilty man before his trial has begun. The attorney blasted the New York City Mayor Eric Adams for joining Mangione’s perp walk alongside armed NYPD, which she pressed was purely “political fodder.” “There was no reason for the NYPD and everybody to have these big assault rifles (during his extradition) that, frankly, I had no idea was in their arsenal,” Friedman Agnifilo told the judge. “He was on display for everyone to see in the biggest staged perp walk I’ve ever seen in my career.” Schecter says that, given how much evidence is stacked against Mangione, including DNA evidence and surveillance footage, she doesn’t see “any other pathway” than an insanity plea. “There’s no question that prosecutors think he pulled the trigger,” she explained. The question for his attorneys, she pressed, will be “how is his defense team going to try and get the lightest sentence possible?” While the public will certainly be watching Mangione’s case closely, healthcare companies, which have received increased scrutiny since Dec. 4, are also under the microscope. Even before Thompson’s murder, recent pointed criticisms of UnitedHealthcare were making headlines. In October, a Senate subcommittee report criticized UnitedHealthcare, and insurers CVS and Humana, for using technology to limit coverage while boosting profits. “Medicare Advantage insurers are intentionally targeting a costly but critical area of medicine—substituting judgment about medical necessity with a calculation about financial gain,” the report reads.Amarillo Tree Service: Trusted Partner for Tree Care and Removal Services 12-27-2024 09:10 PM CET | Politics, Law & Society Press release from: ABNewswire Amarillo Tree Service Amarillo, TX - The people of Amarillo in need of tree care and management services can now turn to Amarillo Tree Service [ https://treeremovalamarillotx.com/ ].
