NEW YORK (AP) — A gunman killed UnitedHealthcare’s CEO on Wednesday in a “brazen, targeted attack” outside a Manhattan hotel where the health insurer was holding its investor conference, police said, setting off a massive search for the fleeing assailant hours before the annual Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting nearby. Brian Thompson, 50, was shot around 6:45 a.m. as he walked alone to the New York Hilton Midtown from a nearby hotel, police said. The shooter appeared to be “lying in wait for several minutes” before approaching Thompson from behind and opening fire , New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. Police had not yet established a motive. “Many people passed the suspect, but he appeared to wait for his intended target,” Tisch said, adding that the shooting "does not appear to be a random act of violence.” Surveillance video reviewed by investigators shows someone emerging from behind a parked car, pointing a gun at Thompson’s back, then firing multiple times from several feet away. The gunman continues firing, interrupted by a brief gun jam, as Thompson stumbles forward and falls to the sidewalk. He then walks past Thompson and out of the frame. “From watching the video, it does seem that he’s proficient in the use of firearms as he was able to clear the malfunctions pretty quickly,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said. Thompson was shot at least once in the back and once in the calf, Tisch said. The shooter, who wore a jacket, face mask and large backpack, fled through Midtown on foot before pedaling an e-bike into Central Park a few blocks away, police said. The assailant remained at large Wednesday afternoon, sparking a search that included police drones, helicopters and dogs. “Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him,” the insurer’s Minnetonka, Minnesota-based parent company, UnitedHealth Group Inc., said in a statement. "We are working closely with the New York Police Department and ask for your patience and understanding during this difficult time.” Police issued a poster showing a surveillance image of the man pointing what appeared to be a gun and another image that appeared to show the same person on a bicycle. Minutes before the shooting, he stopped at a nearby Starbucks, according to additional surveillance photos released by police on Wednesday afternoon. They offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Thompson’s wife, Paulette Thompson, told NBC News that he told her “there were some people that had been threatening him.” She didn’t have details but suggested the threats may have involved issues with insurance coverage. Eric Werner, the police chief in the Minneapolis suburb where Thompson lived, said his department had not received any reports of threats against the executive. The killing shook a part of New York City that's normally quiet at that hour, happening about four blocks from where tens of thousands of people were set to gather for Wednesday night’s tree lighting. Police promised extra security for the event. The hotel is also a short walk from other tourist sites, including the Museum of Modern Art and Radio City Music Hall, and is often dense with office workers and visitors on weekday mornings. Many security cameras are nearby. “We’re encouraging New Yorkers to go about their daily lives and their daily business but to be alert,” NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said. Investigators recovered several 9 mm shell casings from outside the hotel and a cellphone from the alleyway through which the shooter fled. They were also searching Thompson's hotel room, interviewing his UnitedHealthcare colleagues and reviewing his social media, Kenny said. Police said the e-bike that the shooter used to ride into Central Park came from the city’s bike-share program, CitiBike. A spokesperson for Lyft, which operates the program, said police had not yet contacted the company. Health care giant UnitedHealth Group was holding its annual meeting with investors to update Wall Street on the company's direction and expectations for the coming year. The company ended the conference early in the wake of Thompson's death. “I’m afraid that we — some of you may know we’re dealing with a very serious medical situation with one of our team members,” a company official told attendees, according to a transcript. “And as a result, I’m afraid we’re going to have to bring to a close the event today. ... I’m sure you’ll understand.” Thompson, a father of two sons, had been with the company since 2004 and served as CEO for more than three years. UnitedHealthcare is the largest provider of Medicare Advantage plans in the U.S. and manages health insurance coverage for employers and state-and federally funded Medicaid programs. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz posted on the social platform X that the state is “sending our prayers to Brian’s family and the UnitedHealthcare team.” “This is horrifying news and a terrible loss for the business and health care community in Minnesota,” the Democrat wrote. Associated Press writers Tom Murphy in Indianapolis, Steve Karnowski in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Anthony Izaguirre in Albany, New York, contributed to this story.Over the years, Warren Buffett has suggested that investors that don't have time to do investment research should just invest in a fund that tracks the S&P 500 Index. It is a stock market index that is home to 500 of the largest publicly traded companies in the United States. It is considered to be one of the most important benchmarks for the overall health of the U.S. stock market and its economy. Unlike the extremely popular Nasdaq index, which is predominantly tech-focused, the S&P 500 Index gives investors exposure to a wide range of sectors including technology, healthcare, finance, and consumer goods. This arguably makes it the best place to invest for the ultra long term because while the ( ) is home to many of the highest quality companies in the world, the S&P 500 Index includes them and more. This means that if the technology sector goes through a poor period, which would cause the Nasdaq to underperform, there are other sides of the market included in the index to pick up the slack. It is for this reason that some days you will see the Nasdaq index drop but the S&P 500 Index rise. But has it been a good idea for Aussie investors to put their money into an ASX S&P 500 Index Fund over the past five years or should they have stuck to the ASX 200 index? Let's have a look at how one popular ASX ETF that tracks the index has performed. Was it a good idea to invest in the ASX S&P 500 Index Fund five years ago? Five years ago, I could have bought the ( ) for $30.70 per unit. This means that if I had $5,000 (and a further $4.10) to invest, I would have ended up owning 163 units. On Friday, this popular ASX ETF closed the session at $61.01. This means that my 163 units would now have a market value of $9,944.63, which is almost double what I started with. But wait, there's more! The iShares S&P 500 ETF pays every quarter. Over the past five years, the fund has paid out total dividends of $4.971 per unit. This would have pulled in total dividend income of approximately $810. If I add this to my capital gains, I have a total return of $5,750.53 from my original investment. This is a return in the region of 115%, which is well ahead of what the ASX 200 index has achieved over the same period.

This low-key approach feels worlds away from their explosive 2022 Netflix series Harry & Meghan , which thrust the couple’s personal lives and family tensions into the spotlight. Instead, Polo is more about the sport, its cultural impact, and its charitable ties. With Polo , Harry and Meghan seem to be recalibrating their narrative approach. Rather than leading with controversy, they’re leaning into purpose; using their platform to spotlight causes they care about. Archewell Productions, their production company, appears to be finding its footing after mixed results since the couple signed their £80 million (AUD $160 million) Netflix deal. For Harry, this series is clearly a passion project; a love letter to polo and its potential to make a difference through charity. For Netflix, it’s an opportunity to showcase the Sussexes’ star power in a more subdued, meaningful way, moving beyond the divisive drama of their earlier projects. Even with limited screen time, Polo reminds us of Harry and Meghan’s ability to remain relevant. While the series doesn’t include explicit sponsorships, it shines a light on the luxury brands and cultural cachet that come with the world of polo. For advertisers and media professionals, it’s a subtle demonstration of how their presence can elevate both causes and commercial opportunities. Their Netflix partnership was always more than just a content deal; it’s about building a global platform for their brand. Whether they’re highlighting philanthropy, supporting businesses, or simply staying in the public eye, Harry and Meghan continue to blend personal influence with professional ambition. While Polo may not generate the same level of buzz as their earlier Netflix ventures, it signals a strategic shift. By stepping back from the spotlight and focusing on causes close to their hearts, the Sussexes are rebranding themselves as quieter yet still influential cultural figures. For Netflix, the series represents another way to maximise their investment in the couple’s high-profile partnership. Whether this strategy resonates with audiences remains to be seen. But with Polo , Harry and Meghan appear to be playing the long game; one focused less on making noise and more on leaving a lasting impact. Beyond treating disease or managing symptoms — it’s a systemic and multidimensional shift toward holistic health that’s needed. To address human existence's intertwined physical, mental, and social dimensions, we must expand our vision of health care, incorporating universal access and a 360-degree understanding of humanity’s complexities. That same multidimensional, holistic logic must be applied to the system itself. The potential of pro-social AI — artificial intelligence designed for human and planetary well-being — offers an innovative, and pragmatic pathway. Walking that path is not only ethical but essential for creating systems that are efficient, sustainable, and aligned with the real needs of individuals and society. Moreover, it is a business-savvy approach that addresses the inefficiencies in the U.S. healthcare system. Lets see why: The Multidimensional Nature Of Human Health Health is far more than the absence of disease. It encompasses the interplay of aspirations, emotions, thoughts, and sensations at the individual level while also reflecting the dynamics of our communities, cultures, economies, and the environment. Current healthcare systems often operate in silos, addressing only isolated aspects of this spectrum. This narrow focus fails to address the root causes of crises like mental health struggles, systemic inequities, or the societal alienation that can contribute to acts of violence. Pro-social AI addresses these challenges by considering four key dimensions at the individual level: At the collective level, pro-social AI integrates: This multidimensional perspective ensures that health interventions are technologically advanced and attuned to the human experience and societal context. By aligning with these dimensions, pro-social AI becomes a pragmatic tool to create impactful and equitable solutions. Universal Health Care: A Foundational Step Universal health care must become the cornerstone of this new approach. Access to affordable, high-quality care should not be a privilege but a fundamental right. Yet universal health care alone is insufficient; it must be designed to recognize and respond to human needs and societal influences. This requires: The inefficiencies of the U.S. healthcare system highlight this transformation's financial and societal urgency. U.S. healthcare expenditures total over $4 trillion . Differently said, 1 out of 5 dollars of the nation’s GDP goes to health care. This starkly contrasts with countries like Germany and Japan, which achieve better health outcomes while spending significantly less as a percentage of GDP. This disparity underscores, on the one hand, the need for more effective, integrated systems that prioritize prevention and holistic care and, on the other hand, the possibility of making that happen. The Potential Of Pro-Social AI Pro-social AI — AI systems that are tailored, trained, tested and targeted to bring out the best in and for people and planet — offers a unique opportunity to achieve this transformation. Unlike traditional AI systems focused on efficiency or profitability, pro-social AI prioritizes ethical, equitable, and sustainable outcomes. Here’s how it can reshape health care: Personalized, Holistic Care: By leveraging multidimensional data, pro-social AI can develop individualized care plans that address a person’s physical, mental, and social health needs. For instance, AI can identify patterns linking stress and physical health issues, offering preventive strategies tailored to the individual. Mental Health Support: Pro-social AI can provide scalable mental health resources, from chatbots offering empathetic listening to systems that alert caregivers to early warning signs of crises. Community Engagement: AI-driven tools can help communities identify and address systemic health disparities, creating targeted programs for underserved populations and fostering stronger social cohesion. Policy Insights: Pro-social AI can analyze societal trends to inform policies that address health inequities and social determinants, ensuring that resources are allocated where they are most needed. Designing Health Systems With Humanity in Mind To move from vision to reality, we must embrace a paradigm shift that integrates universal health care with the principles of holistic health and pro-social AI. Policymakers, health care providers, and technologists must collaborate to: Embed Holistic Principles: Design health care systems that address physical, mental, and social dimensions, recognizing the interconnected nature of human experience. That same holistic philosophy must becomes part of the training of health care professionals at all levels. Leverage Pro-Social AI: Develop and deploy AI systems that align with ethical principles and prioritize equity, inclusivity, and sustainability. Educate and Empower: Equip individuals and communities with the knowledge and tools to participate actively in their health and wellbeing. Foster Collaboration: Build partnerships across sectors to integrate health, technology, and social systems for collective impact. A healthcare system anchored in holistic principles and powered by pro-social AI offers a radical solution that could become part of 2025. By embracing a multidimensional understanding of health and leveraging technology for social good, we can move beyond treating symptoms to fostering true human flourishing — for individuals, communities, and the planet. It might sound naive, yet taking this approach to scale is not only ethically sound but also a pragmatic necessity for a more sustainable and equitable future. Furthermore, it is a financially prudent strategy, reducing inefficiencies in healthcare spending and aligning resources with outcomes that truly matter.

New novel "Secretary of Faith" by K.C. Boyd is released, a dystopian tale that reflects the urgent need to resist the threat to American democracy 12-04-2024 11:14 PM CET | Associations & Organizations Press release from: ABNewswire "Secretary of Faith - A Fictional Companion to Project 2025" by K.C. Boyd has been released worldwide. This 283-page novel illustrates, with gritty detail, the realpolitik of governmental corruption, dishonesty, and religious extremism, with emphasis on the long-term danger of Project 2025. A continuation of Boyd's first book, "Being Christian - A Novel," this story of a fracturing society follows Christian Hillcox, a megapastor and televangelist who is named the country's first Secretary of Faith. As religion-fueled nationalism strengthens its grip on the public, the American citizenry submits to fear, xenophobia, and isolationism, allowing the rising administration to trample basic rights and pursue their goal of long-term power. While the novel is a work of fiction, the author spent twenty years researching the growing marriage between religious fundamentalists and American politics, infiltrating Christian Nationalists' events, while at the same time observing the cult-like following of those who would turn over control of the country to demagogues and radical religious leaders. The America of "Secretary of Faith" is frighteningly close to today's reality, making the tale a provocative warning against unchecked power. At the same time, it also provides a sense of hope, showing that in times of grave socio-political upheaval - even when the country seems all but broken - good people can come together and find strength in pushing back. Woven through the story's post-societal events, readers will find scenes of compassion and empowerment, ideas that hopefully drive readers to join together for truth, reason, and good. Craig Unger, New York Times Bestselling Author of "House of Bush-House of Saud," "House of Trump-House of Putin," "American Kompromat," and the newly released "Den of Spies" said of the novel: "If you think today's headlines portend a grim theocratic future, welcome to the United Christian States of America as depicted in K. C. Boyd's riveting and fast-paced dystopian fantasy about what happens when radical right-wing Christian nationalism takes power. In Secretary of Faith, Boyd takes us into a dark and often lurid hellscape filled with murder, treachery, and various other unspeakable acts that are a little too close for comfort to today's reality. It's a gripping narrative that shows that in life, as in fiction, the only antidote to desperate times is a powerful Resistance." At once riveting, terrifying, and an inspiring rallying cry for those willing to resist a slip into neofascist theocracy, Boyd's novel is a timely reminder of what's at stake both today and for the future of the nation. The events of the book are at risk of playing out in the real world, and Boyd's writing is a plea for the American people to unite against the dangerous combination of hypocrisy, indoctrination, wealth consolidation, and zealotry that pose an existential threat to the entire world. Secretary of Faith (ISBN: 9781662942037) can be purchased through retailers worldwide, including Barnes & Noble and Amazon. The paperback retails for $12.95, and the ebook retails for $2.99. Review copies and interviews are available upon request. Learn more at https://secretaryoffaith.com/ From the back cover: Lies, fear, and the Holy Bible are the country's undoing in K.C. Boyd's second, dystopian tale, a story that all too closely resembles an America in which Project 2025 rules. Vividly depicting the present-day racism, greed, and religious hypocrisy, Secretary of Faith serves as a cautionary warning to Project 2025. After an orchestrated victory, the newly elected President redefines the country by changing its name to the United Christian States of America. Next, he reduces the traditional number of seats in his cabinet to four, and adds a fifth, the Department of Faith, appointing his lifetime mentor, Christian Hillcox, as its first ever Secretary. The rule of law is no more. Sanctioned by the administration, violent mobs take to the streets. Media is state-run; neighbors inform on neighbors; loved ones vanish, never to return. When a natural disaster strikes the West Coast, an already well-organized Resistance emerges and Secretary Hillcox finds himself in a battle to maintain both the administration's narrative and his own position through evermore frightening means. In a showdown between Good and Evil, the question is-will citizens rise to the occasion and save the Republic? About the author: Twenty years ago, in Ohio, K. C. Boyd became alarmed about the growing marriage between American politics and religion. Point of fact, the things Boyd saw then foretold today's Project 2025. After time spent visiting megachurches across the state and national family-values voter's conferences. Being Christian - A Novel was born. In the sequel, Secretary of Faith - A Fictional Companion to Project 2025 , Boyd responds to the current American existential crisis in a rip-roaring story could have been ripped from today's headlines. WASHINGTON — Former Rep. Matt Gaetz said Friday that he will not be returning to Congress after withdrawing his name from consideration to be attorney general under President-elect Donald Trump amid growing allegations of sexual misconduct. “I’m still going to be in the fight, but it’s going to be from a new perch. I do not intend to join the 119th Congress,” Gaetz told conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, adding that he has “some other goals in life that I’m eager to pursue with my wife and my family.” The announcement comes a day after Gaetz, a Florida Republican, stepped aside from the Cabinet nomination process amid growing fallout from federal and House Ethics investigations that cast doubt on his ability to be confirmed as the nation’s chief federal law enforcement officer. The 42-year-old has vehemently denied the allegations against him. Gaetz's nomination as attorney general had stunned many career lawyers inside the Justice Department, but reflected Trump's desire to place a loyalist in a department he has marked for retribution following the criminal cases against him. Hours after Gaetz withdrew, Trump nominated Pam Bondi, the former Florida attorney general, who would come to the job with years of legal work under her belt and that other trait Trump prizes above all: loyalty. It's unclear what's next for Gaetz, who is no longer a member of the House. He surprised colleagues by resigning from Congress the same day that Trump nominated him for attorney general. Some speculated he could still be sworn into office for another two-year term on Jan. 3, given that he had just won reelection earlier this month. But Gaetz, who has been in state and national politics for 14 years, said he's done with Congress. “I think that eight years is probably enough time in the United States Congress," he said.NEW YORK, Dec. 04, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Why: Rosen Law Firm, a global investor rights law firm, continues to investigate potential securities claims on behalf of shareholders of Joint Stock Company Kaspi.kz (NASDAQ: KSPI) resulting from allegations that Kaspi.kz may have issued materially misleading business information to the investing public. What is this about: On September 19, 2024, Culper Research issued a report entitled “Kaspi.kz (KSPI): The NASDAQ-Listed Fintech Moving Money for Criminals and Kleptocrats.” In this report, Culper announced it was “short Kaspi, the operator of the largest payment network and second largest bank in Kazakhstan. We believe Kaspi has systematically misled U.S. investors and regulators in its repeated claims – especially ahead of the Company’s January 2024 [NASDAQ] listing – that the Company has zero exposure to Russia.” Further, Culper announced its “research exposes this grave deception: we believe that not only do Kaspi’s relationships with Russian partners permeate every segment of its business, but that in the wake of Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine and into 2024, Russia has contributed materially to Kaspi’s reported growth. Our research further unmasks Kaspi’s history of shadowy dealmaking, which raises not only related party and self-dealing concerns, but also exposes the Company’s vast, longstanding ties to bad actors including sanctioned oligarchs and Russian mobsters. We believe that Kaspi’s premium valuation and US listing are at risk, and shares are headed lower.” On this news, Kaspi.kz American Depositary Shares’ (“ADS”) fell 16.1% on September 19, 2024, and a further 2.7% on September 20, 2024. Trump expected to name Kelly Loeffler for Agriculture secretaryNoneBlues supporters also sang the name of head coach Maresca during the closing stages of an emphatic success sealed by goals from Axel Disasi, Christopher Nkunku, Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer and substitute Jadon Sancho. Bottom club Southampton briefly levelled through Joe Aribo but were a man down from the 39th minute after captain Jack Stephens was sent off for pulling the hair of Marc Cucurella. Chelsea, who have endured an underwhelming period since Todd Boehly’s consortium bought the club in 2022, climbed above Arsenal and into second place on goal difference, seven points behind leaders Liverpool. “It was a very good feeling, especially because you can see that they are happy, that is our target,” Maresca said of the atmosphere in the away end. “We work every day to keep them happy and tonight was a very good feeling, especially the one that they can see that Chelsea’s back. This is an important thing.” Maresca rotated his squad in Hampshire, making seven changes following Sunday’s impressive 3-0 win over Aston Villa. Following a sloppy start, his side, who stretched their unbeaten run to six top-flight games, could easily have won by more as they hit the woodwork three times, in addition to squandering a host of chances. “I’m very happy with the five we scored,” said the Italian. “I’m not happy with the first 15, 20 minutes, where we struggled. The reason why we struggled is because we prepared the game to press them man to man and the first 15, 20 minutes we were not pressing them man to man. “After 15, 20 minutes we adjust that and the game was much better. For sure we could score more but five goals they are enough.” Southampton manager Russell Martin rued a costly “moment of madness” from skipper Stephens. The defender’s ridiculous red card was the headline mistake of a catalogue of errors from the beleaguered south-coast club as they slipped seven points from safety following an 11th defeat of a dismal season. “I don’t think anyone will be as disappointed as Jack,” Martin said of Stephens, who was sent off for the second time this term after tugging the curls of Cucurella as Saints prepared to take a corner. “I haven’t got to sit down and talk with him about that at all. He will be hurt more than anyone and it’s changed the game for us tonight, which is disappointing. “I think they have to describe it as violent conduct; it’s not violent really but there’s no other explanation for that really. It’s a moment of madness that’s really cost us and Jack.” Southampton repeatedly invited pressure with their risky attempts to play out from defence, with goalkeeper Joe Lumley gifting Chelsea their second goal, scored by Nkunku. While Saints were booed off at full-time, Martin, who was missing a host of key players due to injuries and suspensions, praised the effort of his depleted team. “When they see such a big scoreline and a couple of the goals we concede, I understand it (the jeers),” he said. “It’s football, it’s emotive, people feel so much about it, it’s why it’s such a special sport in this country and so big. “I understand it but I feel really proud of the players tonight, some of the football we played at 11 v 11 was amazing. “For an hour with 10 men we’ve dug in so deep, there were some big performances. I’m proud of them for that and I’m grateful for that because that’s not easy in that circumstance.”
