A COLD CASE REVIEW combined with advances in forensic technology have helped bring a knifepoint rapist to justice after 35 years. Michael O'Meara from Coventry in the West Midlands initially denied the allegations against him but ultimately pleaded guilty. The 58-year-old has now been jailed for 12 years over the 1989 attack in the city. "This was a harrowing and horrific attack which O'Meara truly believed he had gotten away with," said DC Ryan Ahern of West Midlands Police. On the day of the offence in July 1989, the woman O'Meara attacked had been in Coventry city centre with friends. While walking down Silver Street looking for a taxi, O'Meara dragged her into a secluded area and raped her at knifepoint. Despite an extensive investigation at the time, no trace of a suspect was found for more than three decades until a cold case review was carried out this year. Forensic evidence gathered at the time of the attack was re-examined and, due to significant advances in forensic technology, was linked to O'Meara. With a full DNA profile now available, O'Meara — who had previous convictions for sexual assault dating back to the 1990s — was arrested. Despite denying the offence in interview, he was charged and pleaded guilty on November 7 and at Warwick Crown Court on December 9, was jailed for 12 years for rape. DC Ahern said that 'significant leaps forward in forensic science' in the years since the attack allowed the evidence to be re-examined, proving O'Meara's guilt. "On behalf of the whole team involved in this investigation, we hope the survivor of this attack can find some closure knowing justice has finally been done," he added. "We have dedicated officers across the West Midlands whose job it is to investigate non-recent sex offences. "No matter how long ago the offence happened, we encourage all survivors to come forward and tell their story with the promise we will investigate any possible lines of enquiry." McKamey Announces New Partner, Former Prosecutor Craig WilliamsBaltimore prosecutors are still mulling what to do with the case of Adnan Syed, whose decades-old convictions were reinstated earlier this year. At a status conference in Syed’s case Friday, prosecutor Clara Salzberg, chief of the Baltimore State’s Attorney’s Office’s Post Conviction Litigation Unit, said her team needed 90 more days to decide what to do with a request to vacate Syed’s convictions filed by the previous administration in the state’s attorney’s office. “We are asking for an additional 90 days ... to allow us to take the time that we need to conduct the review of what was filed and to determine what are the appropriate next steps for our office to take,” Salzberg said. Syed’s lawyer, Assistant Public Defender Erica Suter, did not object to the prosecutor’s request. Also the director of the Innocence Project Clinic at the University of Baltimore School of Law, Suter didn’t say anything else during the brief court hearing. David Sanford, an attorney for Young Lee, the brother of the woman Syed is accused of killing in 1999, Hae Min Lee, said he would object to any further delays in the case. “The office claims it needs an additional three months to review documents it has had for over two years,” Sanford said, adding, “At this point, this is frankly absurd.” That prosecutors are still mulling how to proceed in this case adds intrigue to a legal saga made famous by the hit podcast “Serial,” which chronicled Syed’s prosecutions. His break came in 2021 when Suter approached city prosecutors about modifying his sentence under a new law allowing people convicted of crimes before they turned 18 to petition a court to change their penalty. The subsequent review spawned a full-throttled reinvestigation of the case, which, prosecutors said, revealed alternative suspects in Lee’s killing not before disclosed to Syed. New Delhi, Nov 24 (PTI) BJP's Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi on Sunday questioned the timing of the US indictment of billionaire industrialist Gautam Adani, arguing why such allegations by foreign countries are of late coming just before the beginning of Parliament session. The BJP spokesperson was speaking at a session titled "RSS ke 100 saal" on the concluding day of Sahitya Aaj Tak, a literary festival, at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here. "For the past three-four years, such allegations are surfacing whenever a Parliament session is about to start, be it the Hindenburg report, BBC report, the Great Thunberg report and now this. Such allegations coming from foreign countries should be objected by everyone. Ideally, we should say we would work as per our own legal system, and not theirs," Trivedi said. The Winter Session of Parliament will begin on Monday and run till December 20. The US Department of Justice has accused Adani of being part of an elaborate scheme to pay USD 265 million (about Rs 2,200 crore) bribe to Indian officials in exchange for favourable terms for solar power contracts in four Indian states. The Adani Group has called the charges "baseless", and vowed to pursue all possible legal recourse against them. Citing the indictment, Trivedi said the states where government officials were allegedly paid bribes by the Adani Group between July 2021 and February 2022 were Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh, which were all ruled by the opposition parties then, including the Congress. "If you feel these allegations are true, those who were ruling the states then should resign. You can't have it both ways," he added. While Odisha was then ruled by the BJD and the YSR Congress Party was in power in Andhra Pradesh, two regional parties unaffiliated to either the ruling or the opposition alliance at the time, Congress ally DMK was and remains in power in Tamil Nadu. Congress was also at the helm in Chhattisgarh when bribes were allegedly paid to government officials. "The biggest union of farmers -- the Bhartiya Kisan Sangh -- is run by the RSS. Seva Bharti, which works for the upliftment of Dalits in villages, is also an RSS body.
