Police in armoured vehicles patrolled the centre of the city, where hundreds of protesters in small, scattered groups threw objects and started fires. Makeshift roadblocks on major thoroughfares were set alight on Monday evening, covering the city with thick smoke, soon after the country’s highest court confirmed the victory of the ruling Frelimo party presidential candidate Daniel Chapo. Chapo’s main challenger, exiled opposition leader Venancio Mondlane, has claimed the election was rigged, sparking fears of violence between rival party supporters. Shops, banks, supermarkets, petrol stations and public buildings meanwhile were ransacked, with their windows smashed and contents looted. Some were set on fire and reduced to smouldering rubble. “Maputo Central Hospital is operating in critical conditions, more than 200 employees have not been able to reach the site,” its director Mouzinho Saide told AFP, adding that nearly 90 people had been admitted with injuries. Forty were injured by firearms and four by knives, he added. Main roads leading to Maputo and the neighbouring city of Matola were blocked by barricades and burning tyres, while the road leading to Maputo airport was largely impassable. Most local residents stayed at home, with the few who ventured out doing to look at the damage or do last-minute Christmas shopping. Christmas Eve is normally a busy time, with large crowds in central Maputo but shops and even small neighbourhood grocery stores were closed, making petrol and bread unavailable. Public transport was also paralysed, with only ambulances and funeral vehicles running. The unrest spread to several cities in the northern part of Mozambique, local media reported, with violence and vandalism in the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Nampula, Zambezia and Tete, where opposition support is strong. More than 100 people have already died in the unprecedented post-election violence, with fears that the toll could increase after Mondlane’s claim of victory. Mozambicans are demanding “electoral truth”, he said in a Facebook post. “We must continue the fight, remain united and strong.” Monday’s confirmation of the result of the October 9 election came despite claims of irregularities from many observers. Chapo won 65.17% of the vote, more than five points lower than the initial results declared by the country’s electoral commission. In the National Assembly, Frelimo has a majority of 171 seats out of 250, down 24 from the announcement in October. “Venancio”, as Mondlane is called on the street, repeated his assertion in a social media message yesterday that the constitutional court was “legalising fraud” and “the humiliation of the people”. “We want to create a People’s Constitutional Court, which will confirm Venancio Mondlane as president,” he said of himself. “I will be sworn in and invested,” he added. Chapo, who is due to take office in mid-January, struck a conciliatory tone in his victory speech on Monday, promising to “talk to everyone”, including his main opponent. Mining disruptionGemfields Group said yesterday disruptions were possible at its largest ruby mine in Mozambique, after people torched buildings in villages nearby in escalating unrest linked to October’s disputed election. Mozambique’s top court on Monday confirmed long-ruling party Frelimo’s victory in the election that has sparked protests by opposition groups that say the vote was rigged. At least 130 people have been killed in clashes with police, according to the civil society monitoring group Plataforma Decide, and the operations of other foreign miners operating in Mozambique, including South32, have been affected. Gemfields said in a statement that “groups associated with the illegal mining and trading of rubies have taken advantage of the political unrest”. It said “instigators” had on Monday set fire to the police station in Namanhumbir, a village close to Gemfields’ Montepuez Ruby Mining Limitada (MRM) in the northern Cabo Delgado province. An MRM office, a community centre and a community radio centre built by the company in Namanhumbir were also set ablaze. “Based on the trajectory of the ongoing situation, there may be interruptions to MRM’s mining operations resulting from this unrest,” Gemfields said. In another village near MRM’s operations, a water borehole was sabotaged, and in a third village people torched the police station, the residence of a local police commander and the administrative offices of Namanhumbir district. MRM is 75% owned by Gemfields and employs about 1,400 people, the company’s website says. Frelimo has been repeatedly accused by opponents and election observers of rigging votes, although it has denied those accusations. The electoral commission has not commented on allegations of fraud in this year’s election.

Monte Miron, who helped relaunch pro hockey in Tulsa in the early 1990s, died Saturday. He was 72. A funeral mass for Miron is scheduled at 2 p.m. Jan. 3 at Holy Family Cathedral. In 1992, Miron and his father Ray, as well as Bill Levins, founded the new Central Hockey League that brought back the CHL and Tulsa Oilers after an eight-year absence. Monte Miron was the new CHL's first commissioner and a part-owner from 1992-97. In the 2001-02 season, Monte Miron was a co-owner, president and general manager of the Tulsa Crude in the United States Hockey League. Monte Miron, a 1970 Edison graduate, was a seventh-round draft choice by the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs in 1972. After three seasons as a defenseman with Clarkson University, he played pro hockey from 1974-78 with the Tulsa Oilers, Greensboro Generals, Amarillo Wranglers, Albuquerque Chaparrals, Baltimore Clippers and Phoenix Roadrunners. The federal government in recent years has endeavored to change place-names considered disrespectful to Native people. “Denali” is an Athabascan word meaning “the high one” or “the great one.” A prospector in 1896 dubbed the peak “Mount McKinley” after President William McKinley, who had never been to Alaska. That name was formally recognized by the U.S. government until Obama changed it over opposition from lawmakers in McKinley’s home state of Ohio. Trump suggested in 2016 that he might undo Obama’s action, but he dropped that notion after Alaska’s senators objected. He raised it again during a rally in Phoenix on Sunday. “McKinley was a very good, maybe a great president,” Trump said Sunday. “They took his name off Mount McKinley, right? That’s what they do to people.” Once again, Trump’s suggestion drew quick opposition within Alaska. “Uh. Nope. It’s Denali,” Democratic state Sen. Scott Kawasaki posted on the social platform X Sunday night. Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski , who for years pushed for legislation to change the name to Denali, conveyed a similar sentiment in a post of her own. “There is only one name worthy of North America’s tallest mountain: Denali — the Great One,” Murkowski wrote on X. Various tribes of Athabascan people have lived in the shadow of the 20,310-foot (6,190-meter) mountain for thousands of years. McKinley, a Republican native of Ohio who served as the 25th president, was assassinated early in his second term in 1901 in Buffalo, New York. Alaska and Ohio have been at odds over the name since at least the 1970s. Alaska had a standing request to change the name since 1975, when the legislature passed a resolution and then-Gov. Jay Hammond appealed to the federal government. Known for its majestic views, the mountain is dotted with glaciers and covered at the top with snow year-round, with powerful winds that make it difficult for the adventurous few who seek to climb it. See who was in action this week and everyone’s current status going into the Winter break. FC Bayern Munich There are nine players on loan from the first team. Germany – Bundesliga There are five players on loan in the German Bundesliga: Alexander Nübel, Franz Krätzig, Paul Wanner, Armando Sieb, and Gabriel Vidovic. Alexander Nübel – VfB Stuttgart Nübel started in goal for Stuttgart at home against St. Pauli. He had perhaps the best game of his season so far — conceding just one goal, saving a penalty attempt, and recording four saves. He also completed 92% of his passes. Unfortunately, his team could not score, and the lone St. Pauli goal was the winner. Nübel was the highest rated player on his team and was only outrated by his counterpart who kept the shut out for the away team. Stuttgart sits in tenth place on the Bundesliga table with 23 points going into the Winter break. They are also in 26th place of the Champions League table. They must finish 24th or higher in the league phase to make it to the knockout round playoff. Franz Krätzig – VfB Stuttgart Krätzig was on the bench for the 1-0 loss against St Pauli but did not make it onto the pitch. He has not played in over a month, and that was for the second team. We would not be surprised if he was either back in Munich or loaned to another team in January. The first was a home game against St Gallen of Switzerland in the Conference League. He played the full 90 minutes and recorded four shots — two blocked, one that missed the target, and one that hit the post from short distance. He also created one chance for his teammates to shoot. The match ended in a 1-1 draw. He also picked up a yellow card in the second half — most likely from minor conflict with an opponent. Wanner started again for Heidenheim in their return to league play on the road to last place Bochum. Bochum scored two early goals and Wanner could not help his team counter. He was unable to even get a shot off. Like the midweek match, he received yellow card — this time for a bad foul. Wanner was subbed off at halftime and Heidenheim fell 2-0 after the early Bochum goals. Heidenheim sit in 16th place, four points behind the current safety line. The finished the Conference League league phase in 16th place and will play FC Copenhagen in February in two legs of a knockout playoff to go to the round of 16. Armindo Sieb – 1. FSV Mainz 05 Sieb started for Mainz on the road against Eintracht Frankfurt. He did not attempt any shots, nor did he create any chances for his teammates to shoot. He only attempted six shots but completed five of them. Although he did not directly affect the match, Mainz still won 3-1 despite playing down a man for most of the match. With two wins in a row against top four teams, Mainz have moved into sixth place going into the break. With this being the only competition Mainz is still competing in, they could make a run in the Spring. Gabriel Vidović – 1. FSV Mainz 05 Vidović is listed on the injury report with an ankle injury and will be out late February. Spain – LaLiga Bryan Zaragoza is the only player on loan to Spain’s LaLiga. Bryan Zaragoza – CA Osasuna Zaragoza is out until early February after his recent surgery. Osasuna currently sit in tenth place in the La Liga table. They will continue to play through the winter, and we will monitor Zaragoza’s progress. Austria – Bundesliga Lovro Zvonarek is the only player from the first team on loan to the Austrian Bundesliga. Lovro Zvonarek – Sturm Graz Sturm Graz sits atop the Austrian Bundesliga and are still alive in the Austrian Cup, but only have three points in the Champions League, where they sit in 29th place. Although not mathematically eliminated, it would probably take a miracle for them to advance with just two matches left. Germany – 2. Bundesliga Maurice Krattenmacher is the only player from the first team on loan to the 2. Bundesliga Maurice Krattenmacher – SSV Ulm 1846 Krattenmacher started for Ulm away to Preussen Münster on Saturday. He had one shot from outside the box after a fast break that required a save. He was subbed off in the 84th minute with the score still level at 0-0. Neither team found a goal in the final minutes and the two teams split the points. Ulm currently sits in 16th place — the relegation playoff spot — with 14 points. They have their work cut out for them after the break. Germany – 3. Liga Gibson Nana Adu is the only player on loan from the first team in the 3. Liga. Gibson Nana Adu – Unterhaching For the second straight week, Adu was not in the matchday squad for Unterhaching. They ended the calendar year with a 3-0 home loss to league leaders Dynamo Dresden. Unterhaching sits in last place in the 3. Liga and are four spots and six points away from safety. FC Bayern Munich II There are twelve players on loan from the second team. Germany – 2. Bundesliga Hyun-ju Lee is the only player from the second team loaned out to the 2. Bundesliga Hyun-ju Lee – Hannover 96 Lee started for Hannover on Sunday at home against Hertha BSC. He only had one shot — which went over the bar from a few feet inside the box — but completed 93% of his passes, misplaying just one. A teammate of his received a red card in the 58th minute and Lee was subbed off shortly after to adjust the lineup accordingly. The match ended at 0-0. Although Hannover sits in seventh place, they are just four points from first place. First through twelfth place are all within ten points. Germany – 3. Liga Max Scholze is the only player from the second team on loan to the 3. Liga Max Scholze – SC Verl Scholze was on the bench for Verl’s 1-1 home draw against Osnabrück, but did not make it onto the pitch. Verl sit in 12th place on the 2. Bundesliga table. Germany – Regionalliga There are six players Regionalliga teams: Lukas Schneller and Marko Popoic in Regionalliga Bayern, Luka Parkadge and Robert Deziel Jr in Regionalliga Nordost, and Yousef Qashi and Benedikt Wimmer in Regionalliga West. Lukas Schneller – Schweinfurt 05 Schweinfurt have not played since last writing. Schweinfurt sit in first place of the Regionalliga, just one point ahead of Bayern II. Marko Popović – Türkgücü München Türkgücü München have not played since last writing. They are currently in last place with just 13 points. They sit seven points behind potential safety and ten points behind a guaranteed safe spot. Luka Parkadze and Robert Deziel Jr – Altglienicke Altglienicke have also not played since last time. They are in ninth place in the Regionalliga Nordorst — more than ten points from relegation spots but twenty points from the league leaders. Yousef Qashi and Benedikt Wimmer – Wuppertaler SV Wuppertal have not played in a few weeks. They also sit at about mid-table in 11th place with 24 points. Austria – Bundesliga Matteo Pérez Vinlöf is the only player on loan to the Austrian Bundesliga from the second team. Matteo Pérez Vinlöf – Austria Wien The Austrian Bundesliga are well into their Winter break. They won the last five matches to put themselves in second place right behind Zvoornek’s Sturm Graz — whom they will play in the Cup and league respectively to restart the competitive fixtures. Austria – 2. Liga Tom Hülsmann is the only player on loan to the Austrian 2. Liga from the second team Tom Hülsmann – SKN St. Pölten St Pölten sit in eighth place with 25 points, they are almost 20 points ahead of the relegation zone, but 13 points away from the league leaders. Netherlands – Kampioen Divisie David Jonathans is the only player on loan to the Dutch Kampioen Divisie. David Jonathans – FC Den Bosch Johnathans was on the bench for Den Bosch’s final match of the calendar year. Den Bosch won 3-0 on the road to FC Emmen. Den Bosch currently sit in fourth place with 33 points, which would qualify for the promotion playoffs. They are six points from second place and guaranteed promotion and seven points from the top of the table. They will return to play mid-January. Portugal – Liga Portugal Taichi Fukui is the only player on loan in Liga Portugal. Taichi Fukui – FC Arouca Fukui began the match on the bench for Arouca on the road against Casa Pia AC. He came into the match in the 71st minute with his team down 2-1. He had just 12 touches but completed all 11 passes that he attempted. He did not have a shot nor create a shot for his teammates to shoot. Not only was his team unable to find a goal in the dying minutes of the match, but they conceded another goal and fell 3-1. Arouca sit in 18th place with just 11 points. They will have to fight their way out of last place and get to 16th place for the relegation playoff or 15th for guaranteed safety. Luckily 12th through 18th places are separated by just three points. Arouca will continue to play through the winter. We will recap Fukui’s performances in about a month when the majority of the leagues have restarted. FC Bayern Frauen There are five players on loan from FC Bayern’s Frauen team. Germany — Frauen-Bundesliga Karólína Lea Vilhjálmsdóttir is the only player on loan in the Frauen-Bundesliga. Karólína Lea Vilhjálmsdóttir – Bayer 04 Leverkusen Leverkusen sit in fourth place, just one spot out of Champions League qualification and three points from the top of the table. England – Women’s Super League Jill Baijings is the only player on loan to the Women’s Super League. Jill Baijings – Aston Villa Baijings is still fighting a back injury and has not yet debuted for Aston Villa . Villa currently in seventh place — four points away from relegation and 19 points from the top of the table. Spain – Primera División Femenina Natalia Padilla is the only player on loan to the Primera División Femenina. Natalia Padilla – FC Sevilla Padilla was on the bench to begin Sevilla’s match at Granada in the Copa de la Reina. She came into the match in the 64th minute with Granada leading 2-1. Within minutes it would get ugly for Sevilla as Granada scored two more goals in five minutes to go up 4-1. Sevilla pulled one back in the 75th minute but was unable to find any more goals. They crash out of the cup with a 4-2 loss. Now that they are out of the cup, Sevilla can focus on the league. They currently sit in 13th place with just four-point cushion from the relegation zone. They will take a short Winter break until mid-January. Italy – Serie A Cecilía Rán Rúnarsdóttir is the only player on loan to Serie A Cecilía Rán Rúnarsdóttir – Inter Milan Inter played the final match of 2024 last week. They sit in second place, seven points behind league leaders Juventus . They return to league play mid-January.
