Staff are experiencing mental and physical issues due to being "hyperconnected" through digital technology, according to the findings. Researchers from the University of Nottingham’s Schools of Psychology and Medicine conducted detailed interviews with employees from a variety of professions. They found that the cognitive and affective effort associated with constant connectivity and high work pace driven by the digital workplace is detrimental to employee well-being. The study is the final part of a research project exploring the "dark side effects" of digital working which include stress, overload, anxiety and fear of missing out. The results, published in the journal Frontiers in Organisational Psychology , highlight an "overarching" theme of "digital workplace technology intensity" as a result of digital workplace job demands. The research team says their findings indicate a "sense of burden" associated with working digitally which surfaced for most participants in perceptions of overload and feelings of being "overwhelmed" by the proliferation of messages, apps and meetings in the digital workplace. They say "fear of missing out" - or FOMO- on important information and contact with colleagues also contributed to stress and strain for digital workers, as did hassles encountered when using digital technologies. "However, what we have found in our research is that there is a potential dark side to digital working, where employees can feel fatigue and strain due to being overburdened by the demands and intensity of the digital work environment. "A sense of pressure to be constantly connected and keeping up with messages can make it hard to psychologically detach from work." Fourteen employees were interviewed in detail and asked about their perceptions and experiences of digital workplace job demands and impacts to their health. Comments from interviewees included: “[It’s] just more difficult to leave it behind when it's all online and you can kind of jump on and do work at any time of the day or night.” Another participant said: “You kind of feel like you have to be there all the time. You have to be a little green light,” while another commented: “It's that pressure to respond [...] I've received an e-mail, I've gotta do this quickly because if not, someone might think “What is she doing from home?” In their analysis, the researchers explored potential underlying psychological, technological and organizational factors that may influence ways in which employees experience digital workplace job demands. The findings showed that participants' dark side experiences were particularly shaped by a pervasive and constant state of connectivity in the digital workplace, termed "hyperconnectivity." Those experiences contributed to a sense of pressure to be available and the erosion of work-life boundaries, according to the research team. She added: "It also contributes a novel construct of digital workplace technology intensity which adds new insight on the causes of technostress in the digital workplace. "In doing so, it highlights the potential health impacts, both mental and physical, of digital work.”

An Aurora Electoral Board ruled in favor of objections to two aldermanic candidates Friday, and a third withdrew her motion to dismiss the objection against her. The board upheld objections to the nominating papers of Jose Torres, who had filed for the 4th Ward aldermanic race, and Saul Fultz III, who had filed for the 7th Ward race. Adrianna Dallmann withdrew her motion to dismiss the objection against her candidacy for alderman at-large. The dismissal still leaves contests in each of those races. For alderman at-large, incumbent Ron Woerman will face Keith Larson. In the 4th Ward, Jonathan Nunez will face Jeffrey Hansford in a race where there is no incumbent, and in the 7th Ward, Ald. Brandon Tolliver, who was appointed to the position, will face Alex Arroyo and Javier Banuelos. As is often the case in petition objections, the cases involved technicalities. But the technicality in the objection to Torres in the 4th Ward was particularly confusing, because it involved different interpretations of state election statute. In the end, the board ruled to sustain the objection, saying Torres did not have enough legitimate signatures. But there was a question about just how many signatures were needed. Torres submitted 11 pages with 97 signatures. Objector Richard Better objected to 47 of them. The Kane County Clerk’s Office did a review of the signatures, and agreed that 40 of those signatures were questionable and should be stricken. That left Torres with 57 signatures which were presumed valid. Torres said that should have been enough, that he only needed 54 signatures, according to figuring he did using state election law. Attorney Emmanual Llamas, representing Better, said his figuring, also using state law, showed the minimum number of signatures to be 59. Both used state law. Attorney Ross Secler, who was hired by the city to advise the electoral board, said they were both wrong. He also used state law to figure out that a filer needed at least 65 signatures. The confusion was a combination of wording in the statute and the ward redistricting the Aurora City Council did in 2022. The statute gives a formula to be followed, if there was no election following the redistricting. There was an election in Aurora after the redistricting, in 2023, but not in the 4th Ward. Secler said because there was no specific election in the 4th Ward in 2023 – other wards and alderman at-large were elected at that election – the formula of a percentage of number of votes had to revert to the 2021 election. That would put that in line with what the aldermen who ran in 2023 had to use. “That is, I believe, the correct answer,” Secler said. Torres said the situation was confusing, because at different times, he was given four different numbers of the minimum ballots. “I just want to be given the opportunity to represent Aurora, because it’s growing, but how am I to be penalized for something that even the electoral board doesn’t know?” Torres said. City Clerk Jennifer Stallings, one of the members of the electoral board, was persuaded by Torres’ argument. She was the lone vote against upholding the objection. The board ruled 2-1, with Mayor Richard Irvin and Ald. Michael Saville, 6th Ward, voting to uphold the objection. Stallings said she was showing “deference to the people who signed the petition and deference to candidates getting on the ballot.” In the 7th Ward objection, the board ultimately ruled that Saul Fultz III did not file enough signatures to get on the ballot. Secler said the minimum for the 7th Ward was 46 signatures, but Fultz only submitted 30. Fultz had filed to dismiss the objection against him because objector Tolliver did not property file the objection. He said Tolliver filed the original and one copy, but should have filed a second copy. He said paperwork he received from the City Clerk’s Office had only one copy of the objection. But Llamas, representing Tolliver, said when he submitted a Freedom of Information Act request for the paperwork, he received a second copy. He also presented an affidavit signed by Tolliver that he did file two copies. In advising the board, Secler said there is “no reasonable assumption” that there was only one copy. “We have to assume the clerk’s office did their job,” Secler said. In the alderman at-large race, Dallmann withdrew her motion to dismiss after a records exam showed she had 473 valid signatures, short of the 542 she needed. Raised in Aurora and working toward a degree in political science, Dallmann told the board she figured the best way to use her degree “would be to serve my city on the City Council.” She said she would possibly file as a write-in, and file for office again some day. “This is not the end of me,” she said. Boeing has paused its efforts to install and use employee-monitoring sensors, including at its office in Everett, Washington, after media inquiries followed an employee's leak of the plans. An unnamed Boeing employee at Everett, a key manufacturing site for the aerospace giant's jumbojets, shared an internal PowerPoint presentation with The Seattle Times touting the benefits of the tracking technology. The plan reportedly called for installation of "workplace occupancy sensors" throughout Boeing's office that include motion sensors and cameras mounted in ceiling tiles, intended to monitor building occupancy. "As we shared with some employees last month, we were starting a pilot program using a system for managing energy and space usage in selected office areas," spokespeople for Boeing confirmed to The Register . "The system, used by other companies, analyzes motion data and environmental conditions and does not identify people or documents." "We have paused our pilot program at all locations and will keep employees updated," the aerospace goliath acknowledged. According to the leaked presentation, the system was at least deployed at Boeing's St Louis, Missouri offices in October, and work began on it in Everett on Monday. The planemaker declined to clarify exactly where and how the occupancy tracking technology had been rolled out before the pause. According to the newspaper's reading of the PowerPoint slides, the surveillance system, made by Avuity, is designed to gather information on office occupancy and usage of various spaces. The presentation tries to assuage employee fears about the workplace monitoring by noting the cameras used by the system only take blurry photos that don't identify individuals or the writing on documents, though that may not be sufficient to satisfy concerns. As we reported recently, workplace surveillance is quickly becoming the norm in offices around the world as businesses continue to push remote workers to return to the office - Boeing among them. There's a certain degree of reasonability to the presence of those systems, especially as post-pandemic work shifts have in many cases led to companies deciding to shrink their real-estate footprints. Boeing itself sold off a considerable amount of warehouse and office space in Everett in the wake of the pandemic, and may be looking to justify more offloading of space. That said, installing systems to visually track employees, with or without blurring, may not be the best approach, and Boeing's immediate course reversal on being questioned about the practice makes it seem like the jet builder knows that. "Employees should not accept any kind of indoor location tracking as long as there are no reliable safeguards that prevent employers from misusing the data for problematic purposes," Wolfie Christl, author of a report published last month about workplace surveillance, told The Register for an earlier story. "In Germany and Austria, an employer would need to negotiate the introduction of such a system with employees, who would have a right to audit how the employer uses the data." When it comes to worker's rights, the US and EU aren't exactly on the same page, though, which Christl said needs to change.
