AP Sports SummaryBrief at 3:18 p.m. ESTLara Trump will step down as co-chair of the Republican National Committee as she considers a number of potential options with her father-in-law, President-elect Donald Trump , set to return to the White House. Among those possibilities is replacing Florida Sen. Marco Rubio , whom Trump tapped to be the next secretary of state. If Rubio is confirmed, his replacement — who would be chosen by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — would serve for two years until the next regularly scheduled election in 2026, at which point the seat would be up for election again. “It is something I would seriously consider,” Lara Trump told The Associated Press in an interview. “If I’m being completely transparent, I don’t know exactly what that would look like. And I certainly want to get all of the information possible if that is something that’s real for me. But yeah, I would 100% consider it.” Elected as RNC co-chair in March, Lara Trump was a key player in the Republicans retaking the White House and control of the Senate while maintaining a narrow House majority. What she does next could shape Republican politics, given her elevated political profile and her ties to the incoming president. The idea of placing a Trump family member in the Senate has been lauded in some Republican circles. Among the people pushing for her to replace Rubio is Maye Musk, mother of Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk . “The Senate is an old man’s club. We desperately need a smart, young, outspoken woman who will reveal their secrets,” she posted on X. Lara Trump is 42. Elon Musk, who was with Lara Trump on election night at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, responded to his mother’s post: “Lara Trump is genuinely great.” Led by chairman Michael Whatley and Lara Trump, the RNC invested heavily in recruiting roughly 230,000 volunteers and an army of lawyers for what it called its “election integrity” effort, four years after Donald Trump lost his reelection bid to Democrat Joe Biden, citing false or unproven theories about voter fraud. Outside groups such as Turning Point Action and Musk’s America PAC took a greater responsibility for advertising and get-out-the-vote efforts. While Whatley will remain RNC chairman, Lara Trump said she felt she had accomplished her goals in the co-chair role. “With that big win, I kind of feel like my time is up,” she said. “What I intended to do has been done.” President-elect Donald Trump endorsed RNC Treasurer KC Crosbie to replace Lara Trump as co-chair of the committee on Monday. “As Treasurer, she helped the RNC smash every fundraising record in History, and fortified our Party’s financial foundation. KC has been with me from the very beginning, helping REAL Republicans get elected across the Country, and would be a tremendous Co-Chair of the RNC!” President-elect Trump wrote on Truth Social. Lara Trump praised Musk’s new endeavor, the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE , a nongovernmental task force headed by Musk and and fellow entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy . They’ve been tapped to fire federal workers , cut programs and slash federal regulations as part of Trump’s “Save America” agenda for his second term. “I really don’t think we’ve seen movement like this in our federal government since our country’s founding in many ways,” she said. “And I think if they are successful in what they plan to do, I think it is going to be transformative to America in a great way.” She said she expects a different presidency this time, beginning with the structure of the administration: While Trump’s daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner served as White House advisers in his last administration, Lara Trump said she doesn’t see any family member taking any position in the White House this time around with her father-in-law. “He really wants to get in there and do a good job for the four years, and that’s all he wants to serve,” she said. “Four years, and he’s out.” Lara Trump also says she expects the Republican Party to be more unified than it has ever been. When she became co-chair in May, the Trump campaign and the RNC merged, with staffers fired and positions restructured. She said the result could spell trouble for GOP lawmakers who do not agree with Trump’s agenda. “The whole party has totally shifted and totally changed,” she said. “I think people are feeling a little more bold in coming out with their political views.” This story has been corrected to clarify that Rubio’s Senate seat would be filled until 2026 when an election would be held for the seat. The 2024 Heisman Trophy finalists have been announced. Here are the four players who have a shot at being a part of one of the more exclusive fraternities in all of the sports. ESPN's Adam Schefter shared via X. Heisman finalists: ▪️Dillon Gabriel (Oregon) ▪️Travis Hunter (Colorado) ▪️Ashton Jeanty (Boise State) ▪️Cam Ward (Miami) pic.twitter.com/z8dWEzPUvc This year's Heisman Trophy ceremony will be broadcast on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday, Dec. 14. It will also be available via streaming on ESPN+. Our 2024 #Heisman finalists will be announced live tonight during @ESPN 's Monday Night Countdown, approximately in the 6:30-7 p.m. ET window. Look for our full release tonight following the announcement at https://t.co/iVGq1xFizI and on our social channels. #MoreThanATrophy pic.twitter.com/qk3yE8plhg These four players are all deserving to win the award after an incredible 2024 season. However, according to FanDuel Sportsbook , Hunter of the Colorado Buffaloes is the odds-on favorite to win the award with -4000 odds. Following Hunter is Jeanty with +1100 odds, Gabriel with +40000 odds, and Ward comes in last with +50000 odds. The 2024 season has been one to remember, and it will soon conclude with what should be an incredible 12-team playoff. However, before we get to that, one of those four players mentioned above will take home the illustrious trophy. The two front runners have a great shot at taking home the trophy in Hunter and Jeanty. Hunter can do it all on both sides of the ball. The wide receiver/ cornerback had a historic season as he collected 92 receptions for 1,152 yards and 14 receiving touchdowns while helping lead Colorado's turnaround from 4-8 to 9-3. On the defensive end, Hunter recorded a 90.9 coverage grade, which is third among all corners in the county compared to PFF. Hunter is an athlete and can play anywhere on the football field. As for Jeanty, he had one of the greatest seasons we've ever seen from a collegiate running back. His 2,497 rushing yards are 131 from Barry Sanders' single-season FBS record, while his 29 rushing touchdowns are tied for sixth all-time. Jeanty also collected 1,882 yards after the contract, which is 222 more than any other FBS running back's total rushing yards this season. It appears to be a two-horse race between the do-it-all football payer and the elite ball carrier. However, the quarterbacks are also worth discussing. Gabriel led the Ducks to an undefeated season and clinched the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff. Gabriel finished the season with 2,558 yards, 28 touchdowns, and six interceptions with an 86.5 QBR, second in the county. As for Ward, he led the Hurricanes to their best season in a long time. On top of that, he put on his Superman cape more times than not but failed to finish the season on a strong note. Still, Ward recorded 4,123 yards, 36 touchdowns, and seven interceptions with an 88.0 QBR, first in the country. In the end, I'll go with Hunter to win the award and become the first player from Colorado to win the Heisman since running back Rashaan Salaam did so in 1994. The Latest: Suspect in United Healthcare CEO's killing charged with weapons, forgery, other chargesWicked star Ariana Grande has said she and Cynthia Erivo were “insufferable” and “horrible” in the build-up to the film’s release. Grande, 31, also said her co-star was a “brilliant gift of a human being” while being interviewed by Gladiator star Paul Mescal for US news outlet Variety. Mescal told the singer and actor: “I’m watching you guys in the press tour. You’re obviously in love with each other.” To which she replied: “Insufferable. Yes. We’re horrible. It’s bad.” The 7 Rings singer plays Glinda, while her 37-year-old co-star plays Elphaba, in the film which is an adaption of the musical stage show of the same name and is set in The Land Of Oz before the events of The Wizard Of Oz. Their interviews for the film, which have seen the two being emotional towards one another and holding hands, have gone viral on social media. Speaking about Erivo, Grande said: “Cynthia is just an absolute brilliant gift of a human being. I think we tried to keep the pressure out of the room, obviously, as much as possible.” She also said she had not had any read throughs with her co-star before joining the cast. Grande said: “We never chemistry read together, it was three rounds for me, and I read with two different actresses. “I stayed for three and a half hours the final day, and I had cried so much. “We did Popular, Defying Gravity, (and) For Good (songs from the film), and I left my lashes on the mirror, because I left everything else in the room.” The film follows Elphaba, who is misunderstood because of her green skin, as she forges an unlikely friendship with Glinda, a student with a desire for popularity. Bullying of the green-skinned witch saw the movie, which also stars Peter Dinklage, Jeff Goldblum and Jonathan Bailey, given a PG rating by the British Board Of Film Classification (BBFC) for “discrimination”.Beth Dooley | (TNS) The Minnesota Star Tribune The holidays loom large. Parties, gift-shopping, school programs, recitals, family gatherings — there’s really no time to cook. But there is! Here are three quick and easy recipes you can hustle to the table in 30 minutes or less. Relax, take a deep breath and know that dinner is served. Serves 4. Making grilled cheese for more than one can be tricky. Here, the sheet pan does the work; the sandwiches are ready all at once. Try our suggested fillings or just enjoy them plain in all their gooey deliciousness. From Beth Dooley. Directions Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Line a large sheet pan with parchment paper. Spread the butter to the edge of 4 slices of bread. Place the slices butter-side down on the sheet pan. Top with the sliced cheese and add a layer of the filling, then top with the remaining slices of bread. Put the pan in the oven and cook until the butter is thoroughly melted and bottom slices are turning golden and the cheese is melting, about 8 to 10 to minutes. Flip the sandwiches. Continue cooking until the top layer of bread begins to turn golden and the cheese is melted. Turn the oven to broil and toast the top layer, watching closely, this goes quickly, about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Flip the bread and toast the other side, about 15 to 20 seconds or so. Remove, cut and serve. Quick Skillet Chicken with Lemon, Tahini and Warm Spices will come together quickly and can be served on a bed of greens or pasta. (Ashley Moyna Schwickert/For the Minnesota Star Tribune) Serves 4 to 6. A simple marinade of pantry staples — lemon, tahini, olive oil and a little honey — keeps the chicken moist and becomes the sauce for finishing the dish. Serve on a bed of dark greens or cooked rice. From Beth Dooley. Directions In a large bowl, whisk together the lemon, tahini, honey and olive oil. Measure out 1⁄2 of the mixture into a separate bowl. This is to sauce the chicken after it’s cooked. If it seems too thick, whisk in a little water. Season the chicken with salt and pepper and pound with the flat edge of a knife to even out the width a bit. Put the chicken into the bowl of marinade and turn to coat. Film a heavy skillet with more oil and set over high heat. When the oil begins to ripple, add the chicken, reduce the heat to medium and cook, flipping after about 5 to 7 minutes, and continuing, until cooked through, about 10 to 15 minutes. (The chicken should reach 165 on an instant-read thermometer when done.) Remove the chicken from the skillet, set on a cutting board to rest for about 10 minutes. Slice the meat in long strokes against the grain. Serve on a bed of greens or rice, garnished with a drizzle of sauce, chopped herbs and a few thinly sliced lemons. Pass additional sauce on the side. One-Pot Pasta with Sausage, Tomato and Spinach is a quick but hearty meal for busy, chilly nights. (Ashley Moyna Schwickert/For the Minnesota Star Tribune) Serves 4 to 6. You only need one pot for this simple pasta. The sausage adds the seasoning, the onions turn sweetly golden, cherry tomatoes burst into a luscious sauce. A squeeze of lemon at the end livens things up. From Beth Dooley. Directions Film a large heavy pot or Dutch oven with the oil and set over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté until it turns limp and golden, about 3 to 5 minutes. Stir in the sausage, breaking apart with a spatula until it crumbles, about 4 to 5 minutes. Stir in the tomatoes and the stock, scraping up the bottom of the pan to release browned bits that stick to the bottom. Bring to a boil. Add the pasta, stirring well and continue boiling for about 4 to 5 minutes. Turn the heat down to a brisk simmer, stirring to keep the pasta from sticking to the bottom of the pot. If the sauce becomes too thick and the pasta begins to stick, stir in water, about 1⁄4 cup at a time. Simmer until the sauce is mostly absorbed and the pasta is tender, about 15 minutes. Turn off the heat and stir in the spinach, then stir in the cheese. Add lemon juice to taste. Serve garnished with the chopped parsley. None“BRAIN rot” has been voted word of the year after its usage rocketed among Gen Z. The condition, which is not medically recognised, can be caused by watching addictive memes and videos on social media for hours, experts say. It triumphed in a poll of more than 37,000 people by Oxford University Press, which defined it as the perceived deterioration of a person’s intellectual state, especially via over consumption of trivial, mainly online, material. It was first recorded by US writer Henry David Thoreau in 1854, where he criticised society’s tendency to devalue complex ideas. But it has taken on a new significance due to the rise of social media video apps such as TikTok . Its usage rose by 230 per cent from 2023 to 2024, particularly among Gen Z and younger communities. READ MORE UK NEWS Casper Grathwohl, of Oxford Languages, said: “‘Brain rot’ speaks to one of the perceived dangers of virtual life, and how we are using our free time. “It demonstrates a somewhat cheeky self-awareness in the younger generations about the harmful impact of the social media that they’ve inherited.” Other shortlisted words include “dynamic pricing”, heavily used when Oasis concert tickets rocketed amid huge demand . Also featured were “romantasy”, a literary genre combining romantic fiction and fantasy, and “slop”, low-quality, inaccurate content created using artificial intelligence. Most read in The Sun Last year’s Oxford top word was “rizz” , slang for romantic or sexual appeal, which originated online.
Robert B. Reich: Musk continues with his dangerous bullyingA second straight provincial title looked to be in the cards for the Vernon Senior Panthers as they went into the second half of the championship game at B.C. Place in Vancouver with a 14-0 lead over the Windsor Wolves. But the Wolves' offence woke up in the final two quarters and the defence held strong, leading to a thrilling 17-14 victory that earned Windsor its first B.C. title since 2017. The first quarter of the B.C. AA High School Senior Varsity Football championship game went scoreless, with both teams turning over the ball in their opponent's territory. In the second quarter, Panthers star quarterback Cole Budgen threw a goal line fade to a receiver in the end zone for a touchdown. The Panthers missed the PAT, giving themselves a 6-0 lead. Later in the quarter, Tanner Hanson intercepted a pass and ran the ball back to the Wolves' one-yard line. The Panthers punched it into the end zone from there and completed a two-point convert, putting them up 14-0. Windsor then completed a 60-yard drive in the third quarter with Emmet Ward scoring the touchdown to get the Wolves on the board. Windsor would add a field goal to make it a 14-10 game heading into the fourth quarter. In the fourth, Windsor threw the ball deep in a fourth and long situation and the ball was intercepted on the Panthers' five yard line. The Panthers then drove the ball deep into Windsor territory, thanks in part to a 42-yard catch and run by Ayden McDonald. But the Panthers missed a crucial field goal keeping the game's score at 14-10. That gave Windsor the ball back with the chance to win the game with five and a half minutes left to play. A deep reception by Samson Sachter got the Wolves to the Panthers' 34 yard line. Then Sachter reeled in a ball with one hand and went in for the go-ahead touchdown. The Panthers had 1:50 left on the clock to at least get a field goal and send the game to overtime, but on fourth and 10 around mid-field the Panthers came inches short of the first-down marker, turning it over on downs and sealing the victory for the Wolves. The Panthers were looking to win back-to-back championships for the second time in six years after winning provincial titles in 2018, 2019 and 2023. For Windsor, the win marked their first championship in seven years and third since 2005.

ALPINE, Texas (AP) — Three U.S. Army soldiers at Fort Cavazos, Texas, have been arrested on human smuggling charges, U.S. Attorney Jaime Esparza for the Western District of Texas said Thursday. Soldiers Emilio Mendoza Lopez, Angel Palma, 20, and Enrique Jauregui, 25, were arrested after a vehicle allegedly driven by Palma and carrying Mendoza Lopez, a Mexican national and two Guatemalan nationals was stopped Nov. 27 by law enforcement in Presidio along the border with Mexico, about 500 miles (805 kilometers) southwest of Dallas. Mike Lahrman, a spokesman for Esparza, said he did not know the soldier’s ranks or whether action had been taken against them by the military. A spokesman for Fort Cavazos did not immediately respond to a request for comment. “Mendoza Lopez and Palma allegedly traveled from Fort Cavazos to Presidio for the purpose of picking up and transporting undocumented noncitizens,” Esparza said in a statement. “Jauregui is alleged to be the recruiter and facilitator of the human smuggling conspiracy,” according to Esparza. “Data extracted from Palma’s phone through a search warrant revealed messages between the three soldiers indicating collaboration in the smuggling operation.” Related Articles National News | Two children wounded and gunman dead after shooting at Northern California school National News | Abandoned mines in the US pose dangers to people and property when land gives way National News | Dog food recalled in 7 states for salmonella risk after puppy litter gets sick, FDA says National News | White House says at least 8 US telecom firms, dozens of nations impacted by China hacking campaign National News | Powell: Fed’s independence from politics is vital to its interest rate decisions Mendoza Lopez was arrested at the scene of the Nov. 27 traffic stop while Palma, who prosecutors said fled the scene of the traffic stop, and Jauregui were arrested Tuesday at Fort Cavazos, about 125 miles (201 kilometers) south of Dallas, Lahrman said. Mendoza Lopez’s attorney, Shane Chriesman, said he is awaiting more information, known as discovery, from prosecutors on the charge. “Once I get discovery and have a chance to assess the case we’ll develop a plan of attack” and will try to get a bond set for Mendoza Lopez, who is currently jailed without bail, Chriesman said. No attorneys are listed in jail records who could speak for for Palma and Jauregui, who are awaiting their first court appearance on Friday, according to Esparza.
