Even as drones become more common, they still conjure up paranoia and confusion among Americans unfamiliar with drone regulations. Educators though have embraced the new technology. Districts like Hobart and Valparaiso have incorporated drones into the curriculum. Students in Crouch’s Hobart High advanced broadcasting class use the school’s drone to practice filmmaking techniques such as aerial photography at football practices to aid coaches. Hobart’s school board recently accepted funding for the purchase of a new drone. Crouch sees many benefits of the drone camera’s capabilities. “You can do an area of a field to assess how much water was collected during a flood and it can fly back home,” he said. “We can really start utilizing this in a cross-platform with Project Lead the Way’s Cart Club, too.” In that course, students build their own manned go-carts from scratch and race them. The drone adds aerial photography and data on turns and maneuvers. In 2021, Valparaiso High received a $400,000 city redevelopment Challenge Grant to establish an aviation flight course that includes drone piloting, a skill becoming more popular with the U.S. military. In Hobart, police who work as school resource officers asked for aerial photography footage of high school parking lots to instruct parents where to park and line up for pickup during dismissal. “They use it to better route traffic,” Crouch said. Besides piloting skills, Crouch teaches students Indiana’s drone rules of the air. “We touch upon how to fly, when, and what you are allowed to fly over,” Crouch said. “The biggest rule is don’t impede manned vehicles.” Crouch said there are two types of drone pilot licenses – hobbyist and commercial. Nearly 800,000 are already registered for recreational and commercial use. Many drones, however, aren’t registered, officials said. Americans alarmed at the appearance of a drone can’t just fire a shot at it without consequences. It’s a federal crime to shoot at an aircraft. "It's disgraceful to politicise the ICAC with unsubstantiated rumours," Mr Minns said. "This is an old fashioned smear from a group of politicians opposed to changes at Rosehill," he added. The unsubstantiated allegations were a cynical attempt at political point scoring, Mr Minns said. Independent MP Mark Latham, a member of the committee, and of the turf club, claimed via social media on Thursday there is evidence to justify the ICAC referral, based on a meeting the premier had in October 2023. Mr Minns described the turf club's head of membership and corporate affairs Steve McMahon as a friend of more than 20 years in August, after Mr McMahon appeared at the committee inquiry earlier that month. Small's layup with under 2 minutes left in OT gave West Virginia a 79-75 lead. After a Gonzaga miss, Sencire Harris hit two free throws to make it a six-point lead. With 27.1 seconds left, Harris made a steal and scored on a dunk for an eight-point lead, putting the game out of reach. Amani Hansberry scored a career-high 19 points and Toby Okani added 10 for West Virginia (3-2). Braden Huff scored 19 points and Khalif Battle 16 for Gonzaga (5-1). Gonzaga showed its depth, outscoring the West Virginia bench 30-2. West Virginia’s only loss was by 24 points at Pitt, but the rebuild under Darian DeVries is showing promise. Gonzaga turned it over at midcourt late in regulation when Tucker DeVries poked it away from Nolan Hickman and raced the other way before getting fouled. DeVries made two free throws with 5.9 seconds left to tie it at 71-all. Battle inbounded the ball and got it back, but lost control on a drive as time expired. The shorter Mountaineers outrebounded Gonzaga 42-36 and shot 50% in the second half, battling the Zags to a draw in the paint. Nembhard had 12 assists and just one turnover in 43 minutes, but was 1 of 10 from the field. West Virginia will play Louisville on Thursday in the winner's bracket.
