The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly voted on Wednesday to demand an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants Hamas in the Gaza Strip and the immediate release of all hostages. The ceasefire demand in the resolution – adopted with 158 votes in favour in the 193-member assembly – was expressed in more urgent language than one urging an immediate humanitarian truce in Gaza that the body “called for” in October 2023 then “demanded” in December 2023. General Assembly resolutions are not binding but carry political weight, reflecting a global view on the war. The United States, Israel and seven other countries voted against the ceasefire resolution, while 13 countries abstained. The world body also threw its support behind the UN Palestinian relief agency UNRWA, adopting a second resolution with 159 votes in favour to deplore a new Israeli law that will ban UNRWA’s operations in Israel from late January. It demanded that Israel respect UNRWA’s mandate and “enable its operations to proceed without impediment or restriction”. The US, Israel and seven other countries voted no, while 11 countries abstained. 04:01 Protests break out across Asia marking one year of Israel-Gaza conflict “The messages we send to the world through these resolutions matter. And both of these resolutions have significant problems,” Deputy US Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood told the assembly. The Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons are back in first place in the NFC South and again in control of their playoff hopes. Rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. showed the poise in his first NFL start the Falcons will need to take advantage of their opportunity to end a six-year playoff drought. Powered by a big-play defense that produced two pick-6s, a solid starting debut by Penix and two rushing touchdowns by Bijan Robinson, the Falcons cruised past the hapless New York Giants 34-7 on Sunday. On Sunday night, the Falcons (8-7) received the assist they needed when Tampa Bay lost at Dallas . Because the Falcons swept the Buccaneers, they hold the tiebreaker advantage if they remain tied atop the division. The Falcons have games remaining at Washington on Sunday night and at home against Carolina to close the regular season. If Atlanta wins both games, it would win the division and have a home playoff game. The Falcons are assured of their best record since a 10-6 finish under coach Dan Quinn in 2017, their most recent playoff season. Quinn is in his first season as Washington's coach and has led the Commanders (10-5) to three straight wins, including Sunday's 36-33 victory over Philadelphia. Penix, the No. 8 overall pick in this year's NFL draft, was promoted after coach Raheem Morris benched Kirk Cousins. Penix completed 18 of 27 passes for 202 yards with one interception on a pass that should have been caught by tight end Kyle Pitts. Penix is not a dual-threat quarterback, but he showed the ability to escape pressure in the pocket that Cousins lacks following his 2023 Achilles tendon injury. The left-hander's superior arm strength also was immediately obvious. What’s working Robinson's production provided a safety net for the offense which helped make for a smooth transition to Penix. Robinson had scoring runs of 2 and 4 yards. Robinson has rushed for 10 touchdowns this season. He's the first Atlanta player with 10 more more rushing touchdowns since Devonta Freeman during the 2016 Super Bowl season. Robinson ran for 94 yards on 22 carries and had 103 yards from scrimmage. His 11th game this season with at least 100 yards from scrimmage are the most for the Falcons since Warrick Dunn's 11 in 2005. Morris said Robinson deserves to be considered with Philadelphia's Saquon Barkley in discussions regarding the league's top running backs. “Bijan has been outstanding all year in the things that he’s able to do," Morris said. “He’s special. If it wasn’t for this other guy out in Philly, he’d get a lot more recognition across the league. But that guy is having a special year, and Bijan’s not far behind him.” What needs help With kicker Younghoe Koo on injured reserve and watching from the sideline, Riley Patterson was wide left on his first field-goal attempt from 43 yards. Patterson rebounded to make attempts from 52 and 37 yards. Stock up Jessie Bates III and Matthew Judon each had a pick-6 to highlight a day of big plays for the defense. Arnold Ebiketie had his fifth sack of the season and added a fumble recovery. Kaden Ellis added a strip-sack. He also has five sacks this season, including sacks in four consecutive games. It is the longest streak for Atlanta since Patrick Kerney had sacks in five straight games in 2001. Stock down There was some thought that a change at quarterback could be good news for Pitts, who often seemed to be missing in action with Cousins running the offense. After all, a tight end often is a natural target for quick passes from a rookie making his first start. Instead, Pitts had a poor start to the Penix era when he bobbled his first pass from the left-hander, creating an interception by cornerback Cor’Dale Flott. Pitts caught a 7-yard pass on his only other target. For the season, Pitts has 41 catches for 543 yards and three touchdowns. Injuries There will be much interest in this week's injury report after WR Drake London (hamstring) was hurt in the second half. Morris provided an optimistic postgame outlook on London. CB Antonio Hamilton (quad) did not return after leaving the game in the first half. Key number 8: Bates has four interceptions and four forced fumbles. His combined eight forced turnovers lead the NFL. Next steps The game against Jayden Daniels and the Commanders is a reminder Penix was only the fourth of six quarterbacks selected in the first round of the NFL draft. Daniels, from LSU, was the No. 2 overall pick behind Caleb Williams by Chicago. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl Charles Odum, The Associated Press

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — If the Giants' franchise-record 10th straight loss proved anything, it's that New York could use a young franchise quarterback. Rookie Michael Penix Jr. showed what a young QB can do on Sunday against the Giants, who need to learn from it. The No. 8 overall pick in the draft, Penix played a nearly flawless game in his first career start to help the Falcons thrash the woeful Giants 34-7 in their best performance in weeks. The Giants gambled in 2019 that Daniel Jones would be their franchise QB and it really never panned out. The one exception was the 2022 season, when the No. 6 overall pick had a career year and led New York to a 9-7-1 record and a playoff berth in the first season after Joe Schoen was hired as general manager and Brian Daboll was named coach. The Giants even won a playoff game. With the release of Jones last month, the Giants (2-13) are now a team without a quarterback who can perform at the level required of an NFL starter. Tommy DeVito and Drew Lock have split the last four starts but neither has provided much of a spark for the league's worst offense. Lock handed the Falcons the game with two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns. To turn things around next season, the Giants must find a quarterback. “I’d say it’s very important,” Daboll said Monday. New York is going to have a high pick in the draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin, in late April. It could even be the No. 1 overall selection. Choosing the right quarterback is going to be hard. There isn't a can't-miss choice in 2025 draft and forcing one early would be a mistake. Unless the Giants are convinced that Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders, Jalen Milroe or someone else is the next franchise player, they have have so many needs that it would be better to wheel and deal and fill as many holes as possible. Even if the Giants take a quarterback in the second round, there's bound to be someone available who has a chance to be better than what they have now. What’s working The calendar. The season ends in less than two weeks. What needs help The franchise is in disarray, and a shakeup appears likely. Daboll's future as the coach is not bright, considering the current skid and two straight losing seasons. Schoen has to share the blame and so do co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch, who hired the GM and coach. Stock up LB Darius Muasau. The sixth-round draft pick out of UCLA has started the last three games since Bobby Okereke (back) was hurt and eventually put on injured reserve last week. Muasau had 11 tackles Sunday along with a quarterback hit and a tackle for a loss. He made the defensive calls after LB Micah McFadden left with a neck injury. Stock down Lock. In his starts, Lock has had three interceptions returned for touchdowns. He also lost a fumble on a strip-sack at Atlanta. Lock sustained a shoulder injury during the game and had an MRI on Monday. Injuries Besides Lock and McFadden, S Jason Pinnock (eye) also left the game. C John Michael Schmitz and RB Tyrone Tracy were evaluated for ankle injuries on Monday. Key number 1 — Thanks to the Raiders' victory over the Jaguars, the Giants will have the No. 1 overall pick in the draft with two more losses. Next steps For the ninth and final time, the Giants will try to find a way to win at MetLife Stadium. New York is 0-8 heading into Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts. Its only other winless season at home was in 1974 when New York played at the Yale Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut, while Giants Stadium was being built. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl Tom Canavan, The Associated PressNone

Trump offers support for dockworkers union by saying ports shouldn’t install more automated systemsMoira Deeming has released a statement, saying that she is “grateful to God” for the outcome. She thanked her lawyers and the court. “The judge found that I was defamed in five separate publications and that each of those also caused serious harm to my reputation,” she wrote on X. Moira Deeming wore purple during the trial, a colour historically associated with efforts to achieve gender equality. Credit: The Age Every single one of Mr Pesutto’s defences, failed. “This judgment is a public acknowledgment that there was never any justification – legal, moral or political – for what the Opposition Leader did to me and to my family. The organisers and attendees of the 2023 Melbourne ‘Let Women Speak’ Rally did nothing wrong and it is shameful that they were treated without fairness or respect by so many in public office. I will continue to fight for the rights of parents, women and children - and I know I won’t be alone. I am pleased with this result and relieved to have been vindicated. It has been an incredibly tough 22 months for me and my family but I can now start to move forward with the judgment today clearing my name. Thank you to everyone who stood by me and defended me despite personal and political differences and regardless of the cost – friends, strangers, opponents, Liberal members and colleagues. Thanks to everyone who prayed, wrote, donated and told the truth. And finally, thank you to my family, especially my husband. Opposition Leader John Pesutto argued four defences in the defamation case: public interest, honest opinion, qualified privilege and contextual truth. John Pesutto and Moira Deeming. Credit: Darrian Traynor Justice David O’Callaghan found the defences either failed, or did not arise. However, he wrote in his lengthy reasons that he was satisfied the Opposition Leader did “subjectively” believe what he published was in the public interest. “I accept Mr Pesutto’s evidence that he subjectively believed that it was necessary immediately to explain to the public why he proposed to move a motion to expel Mrs [Moira] Deeming,” the judge wrote. “I also accept Mr Pesutto’s evidence that he thought staying silent was not an option and that he needed to address the issue to retain credibility because the public would be watching to see how the party responded to the presence of Nazis on the steps of Parliament.” The judge criticised Pesutto for “time and time again” giving lengthy and non-responsive answers to questions asked of him by Deeming’s barrister, Sue Chrysanthou, SC. “I understand that when politicians are engaged in the cut and thrust of politics – facing tough questions in press conferences, for example – their job can involve deflecting questions, pivoting to another topic, or running out the clock,” the judge wrote. “But that is not the role of a witness in a court proceeding.” Chrysanthou argued Pesutto was an untruthful witness in many aspects of his evidence. “Ultimately, however, I am unable to conclude that he gave dishonest evidence about his subjective belief on the public interest question, as infuriatingly unresponsive as much of his evidence was,” O’Callaghan wrote. Justice David O’Callaghan said it was “extraordinary” that both Opposition Leader John Pesutto and deputy David Southwick had failed to mention a secret recording of the March 19, 2023, meeting held the day after the rally. Southwick secretly recorded the meeting and informed Pesutto months later. Pesutto only raised it with his lawyers a week before the trial began. As it turns out, no witness’s account of the meeting in their affidavits was anywhere near accurate or complete. Both parties invited me to draw adverse inferences against each relevant deponent for having failed to give an accurate account of it. Each witness might be said to varying degrees to have provided their own slant to things, and to have recorded their memories through the prism of their own cause, but I do not accept that any witness gave a deliberately untruthful version of the meeting in their affidavits. O’Callaghan also said it was “mystifying” Southwick kept the recording secret so long and that Pesutto’s explanation was “dubious.” For Sue Chrysanthou, celebrity lawyer, today’s decision is another notch in her defamation belt. Moira Deeming arriving in court this morning to hear the judgment in her defamation hearing. Credit: AAP He awarded Deeming $300,000 in damages after Opposition Leader John Pesutto defamed her. Court costs are yet to be determined, and will be decided upon at a later date, which is yet to be set. “The only order that will be made today upon the publication of these reasons is to adjourn the matter to a date to be fixed for the purpose of the parties bringing in orders to give effect to the published reasons and to deal with any argument as to the grant of any injunctive relief, and as to the calculation of interests and costs,” the judge wrote. Justice David O’Callaghan found that Opposition Leader John Pesutto conveyed several defamatory imputations against ousted Liberal MP Moira Deeming, including that she knowingly associated with neo-Nazis and was unfit to belong in the Victorian Liberals. The imputations were conveyed through a media release, 3AW interview, ABC interview, press conference, and an expulsion motion and dossier, he said. Here’s what the court found: Media release: The media release carried the imputation Deeming was unfit to belong in the Victorian parliamentary Liberal Party because she knowingly associates with neo-Nazis. 3AW radio interview: Conveyed that Deeming associates with Nazis and is thus unfit to be a member of the parliamentary Liberal Party. ABC interview: Conveyed that Deeming knowingly associates or sympathises with neo-Nazis and white supremacists and is thus unfit to be a member of the parliamentary Liberal Party and the Liberal Party. Press conference: Conveyed that Deeming participated in a rally and knowingly worked with Kellie-Jay Keen and other organisers to help them promote their odious agenda and white supremacist and ethnofascist views. Expulsion motion and dossier: Conveyed that a) Deeming so conducted herself on 18 March 2023 in relation to a public rally that it warranted her expulsion from the Victorian parliamentary Liberal Party. b) Conducted activities in a manner likely to bring discredit on the parliament or the parliamentary Liberal Party by organising, promoting and attending a rally on 18 March 2023. O’Callaghan found Deeming had established serious harm and that Pesutto’s defences failed or did not arise. Supporters for Deeming applauded as they exited courtroom 8A. Aggravated damages will not be awarded. The court will return to determine costs. Justice David O’Callaghan has found that ousted Liberal MP Moira Deeming should be awarded $300,000 in damages after Opposition Leader John Pesutto defamed her, harming her reputation. On Tuesday, some influencers began a two-day advocacy event in support of TikTok, which arranged their trip ahead of a House floor vote on the legislation on Wednesday. But unlike a similar lobbying event the company put together last March when talks of a TikTok ban reached a fever pitch, this year’s effort appeared more rushed as the company scrambles to counter the legislation, which advanced rapidly on Capitol Hill. Summer Lucille, a TikTok content creator with 1.4 million followers who is visiting Washington this week, said if TikTok is banned, she “don’t know what it will do” to her business, a plus-sized boutique in Charlotte, North Carolina. “It will be devastating,” Lucille said in an interview arranged by the platform. The legislation is drawing unusual support in Congress In an unusual showing of bipartisanship, a House panel unanimously approved the measure last week. President Joe Biden has said he will sign the legislation if lawmakers pass it. But it’s unclear what will happen in the Senate, where several bills aimed at banning TikTok have stalled. The legislation faces other roadblocks. Former president and current presidential candidate Donald Trump, who holds sway over both House and Senate Republicans, has voiced opposition to the bill, saying it would empower Meta-owned Facebook, which he continues to lambast over his 2020 election loss. The bill also faces pushback from some progressive lawmakers in the House as well as civil liberties groups who argue it infringes on the First Amendment. TikTok could be banned if ByteDance, the parent company, doesn’t sell its stakes in the platform and other applications it owns within six months of the bill’s enactment. The fight over the platform takes place as U.S.-China relations have shifted to that of strategic rivalry, especially in areas such as advanced technologies and data security, seen as essential to each country’s economic prowess and national security. The shift, which started during the Trump years and has continued under Biden, has placed restrictions on export of advanced technologies and outflow of U.S. monies to China, as well as access to the U.S. market by certain Chinese businesses. The Biden administration also has cited human rights concerns in blacklisting a number of Chinese companies accused of assisting the state surveillance campaign against ethnic minorities. TikTok isn’t short on lobbyists. Its Beijing-based parent company ByteDance has a strong lobbying apparatus in Washington that includes dozens of lobbyists from well-known consulting and legal firms as well as influential insiders, such as former members of Congress and ex-aides to powerful lawmakers, according to the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew will also be in Washington this week and plans to meet with lawmakers, according to a company spokesperson who said Chew’s visit was previously scheduled. Influencers descend on Washington But influencers, who have big followings on social media and can share personal stories of how the platform boosted their businesses — or simply gave them a voice — are still perhaps one of the most powerful tools the company has in its arsenal. A TikTok spokesperson said dozens of influencers will attend the two-day event, including some who came last year. The spokesperson did not immediately respond to questions about how many new people would be attending this year’s lobbying blitz. The company is briefing them ahead of meetings with their representatives and media interviews. Lucille, who runs the boutique in North Carolina, says has seen a substantial surge in revenue because of her TikTok page. The 34-year-old began making TikTok content focusing on plus-sized fashion in March 2022, more than a decade after she started her business. She quickly amassed thousands of followers after posting a nine-second video about her boutique. Because of her popularity on the platform, her business has more online exposure and customers, some of whom have visited from as far as Europe. She says she also routinely hears from followers who are finding support through her content about fashion and confidence. JT Laybourne, an influencer who also came to Washington, said he joined TikTok in early 2019 after getting some negative comments on videos he posted on Instagram while singing in the car with his children. Laybourne, who lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, said he was attracted to the short-form video platform because it was easy to create videos that contained music. Like Lucille, he quickly gained traction on the app. He says he also received more support from TikTok users, who reacted positively to content he produced on love and positivity. Laybourne says the community he built on the platform rallied around his family when he had to undergo heart surgery in 2020. Following the surgery, he said he used the platform to help raise $1 million for the American Heart Association in less than two years. His family now run an apparel company that gets most of its traffic from TikTok. “I will fight tooth-and-nail for this app,” he said. But whether the opposition the company is mounting through lobbyists or influencers will be enough to derail the bill is yet to be seen. On Tuesday, House lawmakers received a briefing on national security concerns regarding TikTok from the FBI, Justice Department and intelligence officials. Where to Watch Titans vs. Texans on TV or Streaming Live – Nov. 24Lucid ( LCID 4.53% ) stock climbed in Thursday's trading. The electric vehicle ( EV ) company's share price ended the daily session up 4.5% and had been up as much as 7% earlier in the day's trading. Lucid stock gained ground today thanks to strong early reviews for the company's Gravity SUV. The vehicle is the first SUV made by the luxury EV company. Gravity's Grand Touring models start at $94,900, and Lucid plans to roll out a lower-cost model next year. Lucid stock gets a lift from Gravity reviews Lucid announced last week that production on the Gravity SUV had started at its manufacturing plant in Arizona. This Tuesday, the company announced that the environmental protection agency (EPA) had finalized certification that the vehicle has a range of 450 miles on a full charge. Now, the company has gotten its vehicle into the hands of automotive reviewers -- and early results are largely positive. Today, InsideEV published an early recap of its trial of the Gravity last week. While the reviewer noted that his time with the vehicle was relatively short, he said that his first impressions were positive and that the vehicle "is fun to drive, pleasant to spend time in and has extremely impressive specs across the board." Meanwhile, outlets including MotorTrend , Car and Driver , and Edmunds published preliminary reviews of the Gravity on Tuesday. MotorTrend said that the Gravity marked a significant departure from Lucid's Air sedan and delivered the company's hallmarks of range, design, and performance. Meanwhile, Car and Driver indicated that the SUV delivered some significant improvements compared to the company's sedan, and Edmunds said that the vehicle set a new benchmark for electric SUVs. What's next for Lucid? As the company's first foray into the electric SUV space, Gravity is an important release for Lucid. While the company's Air sedans have generally received high marks from drivers and review outlets, adoption for the vehicles has been relatively low. The EV specialist sold 2,781 vehicles in this year's third quarter, which was up roughly 90% year over year. But the sales performance was aided by price cuts and still looks small compared to numbers put up by other players in the EV space. Meanwhile, the business posted a net loss of roughly $992.5 million in the quarter. Lucid's long-term success hinges on ramping up demand and production to the point where manufacturing cost per unit is brought down enough to make vehicle sales profitable. The company has a long way to go on that front, but the Gravity stands a good chance of outselling the Air and helping the business significantly expand its sales base. The secret's out: Christopher Nolan's new Tom Holland-led movie is an Odyssey adaptation and a "mythic action epic shot across the world"
