However, this isn't the first time the influencer has been charged with stealing. Marlena Velez, 22, a mom of two and content creator with more than 300,000 followers, who allegedly stole the merchandise from Target, also allegedly stole a car and kitchenware several years ago. Newsweek reached out to Velez for a comment, however, she has not yet responded. In October 2019, when Velez was 17, Cape Coral Police Department arrested her and charged her with grand theft of a motor vehicle, WBBH reported. In a statement posted on social media by the Cape Coral Police Department regarding the influencer's Target arrest, Bibiana Alonso Santana said, "She stole my daughter's car in high school and totaled it. I guess some people never learn." Newsweek contacted Santana for comment. Her daughter, Amanda Santana, told WBBH that Velez asked her to stay in her car during class until lunchtime. They were friends. "I went to the parking lot, and I'm looking around for my car, and I can't find it, so I actually, like double-checked, looked on every side, and I was like, where is my car? We figured out that she went and crashed my car and totaled it into a ditch at a Dunkin' on Cape Coral Parkway," Santana's daughter told the outlet. Newsweek contacted the CCPD about the car incident, but has yet to receive a response. In July 2023, authorities arrested Velez again, this time for allegedly shoplifting at a Walmart on Del Prado Boulevard in Cape Coral, WBBH reported. In a report obtained by the outlet, police said Velez stole $63 worth of kitchen items. In April 2024, the influencer pleaded no contest to the charges. She completed an anti-theft course and served six months of probation, which ended last month. This time, she recorded the entire incident and shared it on her TikTok account. Target's loss prevention team reported on October 30 that an unidentified woman (allegedly Velez) entered the store and selected several items. At the self-checkout register, she scanned a counterfeit barcode instead of the items' actual barcodes, reducing the prices, according to the Cape Coral Police Department's press release. "Sixteen items of miscellaneous household goods and clothing were stolen," the release said. "The total loss of the stolen items was valued at $500.32. Officers verified this with Target's security cameras." The police department shared a photo of Velez on social media to help identify her. The image showed a woman, estimated to be between 20 and 35 years old, with long black hair, wearing a tan shirt, tan pants and glasses. An anonymous tipster who saw the social media post identified the suspect as Velez. The caller also provided officers with Velez's Instagram handle. Velez has since deleted her Instagram page and her TikTok page is private. Velez posted a TikTok video documenting her Target trip on October 30. Officers traced her account, where she recorded herself, wearing the same outfit and glasses, picking out items and loading them into her car. The video of her Target trip has since been deleted. Her last post, on November 15, marked a notable break for an influencer who typically posts daily. Authorities took her to the Lee County Jail, where she faces a charge of petty theft for stealing items worth between $100 and $750, the press release said. In many cases, petty theft is classified as a misdemeanor, and people may be released on bail or bond while awaiting trial. Penalties for petty theft can also vary, including fines, community service, probation or jail time. Velez, a stay-at-home mom of two toddlers in Cape Coral, Florida, is an influencer known for her popular Day In My Life videos, which have garnered more than a million views. Her TikTok bio highlights her focus on vlogs, home and style content. Since her first post in August, Velez has gained 367,000 followers and earned 8.8 million likes. EAST LANSING, Mich. — The sight was a common one for Andrew Kolpacki. For many a Sunday, he would watch NFL games on TV and see quarterbacks putting their hands on their helmets, desperately trying to hear the play call from the sideline or booth as tens of thousands of fans screamed at the tops of their lungs. When the NCAA's playing rules oversight committee this past spring approved the use of coach-to-player helmet communications in games for the 2024 season, Kolpacki, Michigan State's head football equipment manager, knew the Spartans' QBs and linebackers were going to have a problem. "There had to be some sort of solution," he said. As it turns out, there was. And it was right across the street. Kolpacki reached out to Tamara Reid Bush, a mechanical engineering professor who not only heads the school's Biomechanical Design Research Laboratory but also is a football season ticket-holder. Kolpacki "showed me some photos and said that other teams had just put duct tape inside the (earhole), and he asked me, 'Do you think we can do anything better than duct tape,?" Bush said. "And I said, 'Oh, absolutely.'" Bush and Rylie DuBois, a sophomore biosystems engineering major and undergraduate research assistant at the lab, set out to produce earhole inserts made from polylactic acid, a bio-based plastic, using a 3D printer. Part of the challenge was accounting for the earhole sizes and shapes that vary depending on helmet style. Once the season got underway with a Friday night home game against Florida Atlantic on Aug. 30, the helmets of starting quarterback Aidan Chiles and linebacker Jordan Turner were outfitted with the inserts, which helped mitigate crowd noise. DuBois attended the game, sitting in the student section. "I felt such a strong sense of accomplishment and pride," DuBois said. "And I told all my friends around me about how I designed what they were wearing on the field." All told, Bush and DuBois have produced around 180 sets of the inserts, a number that grew in part due to the variety of helmet designs and colors that are available to be worn by Spartan players any given Saturday. Plus, the engineering folks have been fine-tuning their design throughout the season. Dozens of Bowl Subdivision programs are doing something similar. In many cases, they're getting 3D-printed earhole covers from XO Armor Technologies, which provides on-site, on-demand 3D printing of athletic wearables. The Auburn, Alabama-based company has donated its version of the earhole covers to the equipment managers of programs ranging from Georgia and Clemson to Boise State and Arizona State in the hope the schools would consider doing business with XO Armor in the future, said Jeff Klosterman, vice president of business development. XO Armor first was approached by the Houston Texans at the end of last season about creating something to assist quarterback C.J. Stroud in better hearing play calls delivered to his helmet during road games. XO Armor worked on a solution and had completed one when it received another inquiry: Ohio State, which had heard Michigan State was moving forward with helmet inserts, wondered if XO Armor had anything in the works. "We kind of just did this as a one-off favor to the Texans and honestly didn't forecast it becoming our viral moment in college football," Klosterman said. "We've now got about 60 teams across college football and the NFL wearing our sound-deadening earhole covers every weekend." The rules state that only one player for each team is permitted to be in communication with coaches while on the field. For the Spartans, it's typically Chiles on offense and Turner on defense. Turner prefers to have an insert in both earholes, but Chiles has asked that the insert be used in only one on his helmet. Chiles "likes to be able to feel like he has some sort of outward exposure," Kolpacki said. Exposure is something the sophomore signal-caller from Long Beach, California, had in away games against Michigan and Oregon this season. Michigan Stadium welcomed 110,000-plus fans for the Oct. 26 matchup between the in-state rivals. And while just under 60,000 packed Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon, for the Ducks' 31-10 win over Michigan State three weeks earlier, it was plenty loud. "The Big Ten has some pretty impressive venues," Kolpacki said. "It can be just deafening," he said. "That's what those fans are there for is to create havoc and make it difficult for coaches to get a play call off." Something that is a bit easier to handle thanks to Bush and her team. She called the inserts a "win-win-win" for everyone. "It's exciting for me to work with athletics and the football team," she said. "I think it's really exciting for our students as well to take what they've learned and develop and design something and see it being used and executed." He went on to carve out an extraordinary post-presidency life and won the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2002 for, the prize citation said, “his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development”. His wife of 77 years, Rosalyn Carter died in November 2023, at 96. Carter was the third US President to visit India, after Dwight Eisenhower in 1959 and Richard Nixon in 1969. He was accompanied on this visit in 1978 by the first lady. Carter had met then President Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy and Prime Minister Morarji Desai and addressed the Parliament. A village he had visited then in Gurugram (then Gurgaon) was named Carterpuri and retains that name. “The atmosphere throughout the visit was friendly, and the President’s reception by the Indian public was enthusiastic,” the US Embassy in New Delhi had reported to the State Department in a telegram published by the US Office of the Historian. “It is clear that the President established an excellent personal rapport with the Prime Minister. The editorial comment, in the wake of the visit, while generally reflecting the atmosphere described above, also expressed some reservations. For the most part, these focused on the differences in the nuclear field.” Carter’s mother, Lilian Carter, had however visited India much before he did. A majority of farmers voted for Donald Trump, even though the president-elect’s economic agenda is antithetical to the financial interests of American agriculture. Since the dawn of this century, the world has added 398 million acres of land for the production of food grains, feed grains and oil seeds. Much of that acreage has been in tropical regions. At the same time, population growth in China, a primary buyer of U.S. agricultural goods, has slowed, and its population is aging. Similar trends can be seen in other countries that have been traditional importers of U.S. goods. We also face major geopolitical events, such as the Ukraine-Russia war, and most resolutions of that war would likely adversely affect U.S. farmers. The world has changed. Competition among major producing nations has changed the ability of American agriculture to be a preferred and low-cost provider of grains to other nations. Against this backdrop, one must ponder the question of how an isolationist foreign policy and the use of heavy tariffs could possibly lead to anything other than serious adverse consequences for our U.S. agricultural sector. History teaches us lessons, and sadly we often forget them while drunk on the political cocktail of the moment. During the first Trump presidency, significant tariffs were imposed on China. This led to major negative impacts on U.S. farmers. What did the government do? The Trump administration created an ad hoc disaster relief program that paid billions to U.S. farmers. “Ad hoc” is just a shiny term for an administration not being able to get its act together to have a consistent and logical approach to setting policy. It is akin to government by chaos — going from one fire drill to another. Trump was elected based on many promises, one of which was to “drain the swamp.” There is a lot of chatter about reducing government outlays for all sorts of programs. Trump wants to put America “first.” Setting aside political differences, the reality is that America is not an island. It is an important part of the larger world. Withdrawal from engagement with other nations, whether in the context of trade or overall foreign relations, cannot lead to good consequences for America’s economic security, nor for our nation’s ability to play a strong role in maintaining a stable and peaceful world. My fellow farmers, it is time for a reality check. We face way more than a theoretical risk of losing a large share of the markets for our grains and livestock. Don’t count on that brown envelope from Uncle Sam in your mailbox to bail you out from hardship. From the extensive reading that I have done on the topic of the economic impact of Trump’s tariffs, no credible economist paints any picture other than one of significant detrimental consequences to our agricultural sector. The same is true for many other segments of the economy. America has to maintain a global perspective — rather than one that stops at our shores — to stay competitive and to remain in its role as a world leader.
