( MENAFN - Brazil-Arab News Agency (ANBA)) São Paulo – The Palestinian Minister of Religious and Islamic Affairs, Mahmoud Al-Habbash, told ANBA on Monday (2) that Brazil plays an influential role on the global stage and that this influence can be leveraged to garner more support for the Arab country's causes. Al-Habbash, along with the Palestinian ambassador and dean of the Council of Arab Ambassadors in Brazil, Ibrahim Alzeben; Al-Habbash's advisor, Hamza Daana; Judge Maher Khudeir; and the embassy's minister-counselor, Ahmed Al Assad, visited the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC ) on Monday morning. They were welcomed by the institution's president, Osmar Chohfi, and secretary-general and vice president of international relations, Mohamad Mourad. Al-Habbash reiterated that Palestine seeks to join the BRICS group of developing countries, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, and Ethiopia. “Palestine has good relations with all the countries in the group. China, South Africa, and Russia are historically friendly nations to the Palestinian people. We have requested membership in the group and submitted a request to join the NDB (New Development Bank, the BRICS bank),” he said, noting that while BRICS is an economic cooperation bloc, economics and politics cannot be separated. The minister also said that Palestine seeks a“just peace” in the Middle East and advocated for the existence of two states: Israel and Palestine. He added that the president of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, is expected to visit Brazil in the second half of 2025, noting that Abbas and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva share a good personal relationship. During his visit to Brazil to attend the 37th Annual Conference of Latin American and Caribbean Muslims, held from November 29 to last Sunday (1), Al-Habbash was scheduled to meet with São Paulo authorities on Monday as well. In the afternoon, he was set to meet with the State Secretary of Government and Institutional Relations of São Paulo Gilberto Kassab, along with State Representative Maurici Morais, who chairs the International Relations Committee at the São Paulo State Legislative Assembly. On the day of Thompson's murder, Witty addressed employees in a company-wide video in which he justified their practice of stamping out "unnecessary" health coverage. "Our role is a critical role, and we make sure that care is safe, appropriate, and is delivered when people need it," Thompson said in the internal virtual address, leaked by journalist Ken Klippenstein . "And we guard against the pressures that exist for unsafe care or for unnecessary care to be delivered in a way which makes the whole system too complex and ultimately unsustainable." "So we're going to continue to make that case, and we're going to continue to do the work we do," he added. As critics of the healthcare industry might argue, Witty's comments are emblematic of insurers' ruthless cost-saving policies that prevent patients from getting coverage for often crucial or life-saving procedures, leaving them with enormous medical bills. An analysis by ValuePenguin suggests that UnitedHealthcare — a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, which Thompson served as CEO of — denies a staggering 32 percent of claims. That's twice the industry average, and more than any other insurer. The company even reportedly used an AI algorithm to automatically deny some of these claims. On social media, Witty's "unnecessary care" remarks struck a nerve amongst those who have seen themselves or loved ones struggle with UHC's system. "United wouldn't approve my mother for the medicine her doctor said she needed until she first tried this other medicine," tweeted Justin Whang, a popular YouTuber and streamer. "As a result, one day she went temporarily blind on the way home." Another user painfully recalled how her brain surgery was considered "unnecessary" because it was a "cosmetic" issue. "If I had to live with the condition any longer I [definitely] wouldn't be here today," she wrote. But according to Witty, these kinds of grievances aren't based in "reality." Seriously. Taking aim at the company's "vitriolic" critics, he launched into a rant about the negative atmosphere in the media and among the public. "I encourage you to tune out that critical noise that we're hearing right now," Witty told employees. "It does not reflect reality. It is simply a sign of an era in which we live." That is an astoundingly tonedeaf thing to say in a country where medical debt is cited in over 66 percent of bankruptcies, according to a 2019 study . But is anyone surprised at this point? More on United: Suspected Killer of Insurance CEO Had Debilitating Back Injury Share This ArticleIan Schieffelin came within two assists of a triple-double and Clemson handed Penn State its first loss with a 75-67 decision for the championship of the Sunshine Slam tournament Tuesday in Daytona Beach, Fla. Schieffelin finished with 18 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists for the Tigers (6-1), leading four players in double figures. Chase Hunter added 17 points, while Chauncey Wiggins scored 14 and reserve Del Jones chipped in 10 points. Clemson sank 9 of 19 3-pointers, converted 16 of 20 free throws and was able to limit the impact of the Nittany Lions' full-court pressure. The Tigers committed just 13 turnovers, helping them hold Penn State (6-1) to less than 85 points for the first time this year. Ace Baldwin starred in defeat with game highs of 20 points and 11 assists, while center Yanic Konan Niederhauser added 14 points. Nick Kern came off the bench to score 11 but Penn State was outscored 15-2 on the fast break and made just 4 of 18 attempts from 3-point range. Schieffelin came up big down the stretch, assisting on a 3-pointer by Jaeden Zackery with 6:04 left that made it 65-61. Then he made two foul shots and tossed in a jump hook from the lane to up the margin to 71-66 with 1:03 left. The big storyline going into this game was which team would be able to control the pace. Penn State came in averaging 96 ppg, while Clemson demonstrated its ability to enforce a slower tempo in March, advancing to a regional final in the NCAA Tournament. In the first 10 minutes of the game, the Tigers made the Nittany Lions play at a crawl, opening up a 17-10 advantage when Schieffelin converted a short hook in the lane. But Penn State answered with an 18-4 run over nearly six minutes, establishing a 28-21 lead when Kern shook free for a layup. Clemson rallied with nine straight points but the Nittany Lions had the last say as Baldwin converted a layup with 24 seconds left, cutting the Tigers' edge to 38-36 at halftime. --Field Level Media

Sonic Rumble Signups Open Ahead of New Sonic the Hedgehog Game’s ReleaseDonald Trump said Saturday that a surprise meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Florida was "very productive," days after the incoming US leader rattled Ottawa with a vow to impose tariffs on Canadian imports. Trudeau, on an unannounced visit, had been seen smiling Friday as he exited a hotel in West Palm Beach to head to a dinner at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate. Afterward, Trump posted on his Truth Social website that he had had "a very productive meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau." He said the two men had discussed issues including "the Fentanyl and Drug Crisis that has decimated so many lives as a result of Illegal Immigration." He added, "Prime Minister Trudeau has made a commitment to work with us to end this terrible devastation of U.S. Families." Trudeau told journalists that he had had an "excellent conversation" with Trump, but did not elaborate. Trump has blamed Canada and Mexico for not stemming an influx of undocumented migrants and he blames them, and China, for drug problems in the United States. Trudeau's trip came after Trump sent shockwaves through the region Monday when he announced 25 percent import tariffs against Canada and Mexico and 10 percent against China if they failed to address the drug and migration problems. Such tariffs could have a devastating impact if imposed. More than three-quarters of Canadian exports, or Can$592.7 billion ($423 billion), went to the United States last year, and nearly two million Canadian jobs are dependent on trade. A Canadian government source had told AFP that Canada was considering possible retaliatory tariffs against the United States. Trudeau was the first foreign leader to meet with the US president-elect. But on Wednesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum spoke to Trump by phone and later ruled out a trade war with the United States. "There will not be a potential tariff war," she told reporters Thursday. Trump later said that Sheinbaum had "agreed to stop migration through Mexico... effectively closing our Southern border." But she said that there would be no closing of the border, stating: "Of course we do not agree with that." Some have suggested Trump's tariff threat was bluster, or an opening salvo in future trade negotiations. But Trudeau rejected those views when he spoke with reporters earlier in Prince Edward Island province. "Donald Trump, when he makes statements like that, he plans on carrying them out," Trudeau said. "There's no question about it." amc/jgc/nro/bbk/bfmNone
