Luke Humphries retained his Players Championship trophy by beating rival Luke Littler 11-7 in a final marred by whistling. 'Cool Hand Luke' survived a scare in Minehead on Sunday night to scoop his seventh major title. Humphries threatened to run away with the final after stumbling to a 4-1 lead, before Littler fought back to make it 8-7 in the former's favour. But Humphries reeled off three consecutive legs to show to fans why he is the world No.1 and one of the favourites for the PDC World Championship last month. However there can be no rematch between the defending champion and Littler in the final again with the duo both drawn in the same half, meaning a mouthwatering semi-final could be on the cards. And should that happen, the duo will be desperate for fans to behave themselves - unlike a select few in the Players Championship final. Some supporters in attendance could be heard whistling as Humphries prepared to throw, with it obvious that it was affecting his rhythm. As the whistles got louder and more consistent when Humphries approached the oche, referee Charlie Corstorphine intervened in the 14th leg to deliver a message to the crowd. Loudly, he simply announced: "Stop whistling, thank you." That appeared to do the trick, as whistles soon turned to cheers, with fans treated to a world class affair. Social media was quick to applaud Corstorphine for how he handled the incident which restored order in the final. Taking to X, one fan posted: "Lot of respect for Charlie Corstorphine there." Another messaged: "Fair play Charlie Corstorphine telling them d***heads whistling to shut up." A third added: "Charlie Corstorphine showing some serious b******* calling out to the crowd, how it should be done every single time, if continues take players off the stage until security chuck the t****** out." Meanwhile this user simply stated: "Big up Charlie Corstorphine." Humphries, who has now won five TV titles in 2024, was jubilant in his post-match interview after banking the £120,000 winners' cheque. He told ITV: "This [trophy] was in my living room a couple of months ago and now I have it back! “I didn’t feel myself this weekend. I was a dart behind. “Luke drives me on, he makes me want to be a better player. I enjoy playing him. “I am proud that I didn’t take my foot off the gas. It was a fantastic game again with Luke, he’s a special talent. “Luke is probably the best player in the world right now. “I told him I have to win these trophies before he starts to do so. “These big games are what I live for, dream of, and to be a champion is why I do this, why I travel the world. “I never give up. I know I can beat Luke. This is the best way to go into the worlds.”

OTTAWA — NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says his party will not support a Liberal plan to give Canadians a GST holiday and $250 unless the government expands eligibility for the cheques, saying the rebate leaves out "the most vulnerable." The Liberals announced a plan last week to cut the federal sales tax on a raft of items like toys and restaurant meals for two months, and to give $250 to more than 18.7 million Canadians in the spring. Speaking after a Canadian Labour Congress event in Ottawa, Singh says he's open to passing the GST legislation, but the rebate needs to include seniors, students, people who are on disability benefits and those who were not able to work last year. Singh says he initially supported the idea because he thought the rebate cheques would go to anyone who earned under $150,000 last year. But the so-called working Canadians rebate will be sent to those who had an income, leaving out people Singh says need the help. The government intends to include the measures in the fall economic statement, which has not yet been introduced in the House of Commons. The proposed GST holiday would begin in mid-December, lasting for two months. It would remove the GST on prepared foods at grocery stores, some alcoholic drinks, children's clothes and toys, Christmas trees, restaurant meals, books, video games and physical newspapers. A privilege debate has held up all government business in the House since late September, with the Conservatives pledging to continue a filibuster until the government hands over unredacted documents related to misspending at a green technology fund. The NDP said last week they had agreed to pause the privilege debate in order to pass the legislation to usher in the GST holiday. Singh said Tuesday that unless there are changes to the proposed legislation, he will not support pausing the debate. The Bloc Québécois is also pushing for the rebates to be sent to seniors and retirees. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 26, 2024. David Baxter, The Canadian Press
The SEC and Big Ten championship games are shaping up to be rematches from top-five matchups in the regular season. Oregon and Ohio State will revisit their 32-31 classic on Oct. 12 if the Buckeyes beat Michigan on Saturday. Georgia beat Texas 30-15 on Oct. 19, and they will have a rematch if the Longhorns beat Texas A&M on Saturday. How do we sell these matchups in terms of the College Football Playoff bracket? Honestly, we're not sure, and that is reflected in our Week 14 Bowl Projections. For now, we are picking Oregon and Texas to win those games. Look at our bracket . That means the SEC loser – Georgia – would fall to the No. 8 seed, where a win would earn a matchup against Oregon – the No. 1 overall seed in the bracket. That is not a favorable draw for either team. The SEC winner – Texas – would have a favorable draw as the No. 2 seed, but not as good as Ohio State – which could face No. 12 Boise State and No. 4 Arizona State – in either order depending on how those projected conference champions are seeded. The Buckeyes have the best draw of any of these teams, and it exposes the true value of conference championship games and the need to just seed these teams 1-12 the proper way. In the end, we think some combination of Oregon, Ohio State, Texas and Georgia will be the championship game, and perhaps Notre Dame gets in the way. MORE: SEC title game scenarios | Big 12 | Big Ten | ACC The third set of College Football Playoff rankings will be unveiled Tuesday. Sporting News will have weekly bowl projections leading up to the unveiling of the first 12-team playoff field on Dec. 8. The first round of the new CFP will have one game on Friday, Dec. 20, and three on Saturday, Dec. 21. The quarterfinals will be played at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl (Dec. 31), Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl (Jan. 1), Rose Bowl Game presented by Prudential (Jan. 1) and Allstate Sugar Bowl (Jan. 1). The semifinals will be played at the Capital One Orange Bowl (Jan. 9) and Cotton Bowl Classic (Jan. 10). The CFP national championship is Jan. 20 in Atlanta. Those first-round games will be played on campus: DATE BOWL MATCHUP Dec. 20 First-Round CFP game No. 11 SMU at No. 6 Penn State Dec. 21 First-Round CFP game No. 9 Indiana at No. 8 Georgia Dec. 21 First-Round CFP game No. 12 Boise State at No. 5 Ohio State Dec. 21 First-Round CFP game No. 10 Tennessee at No. 7 Notre Dame The best matchup would be Tennessee at Notre Dame. Those schools have split eight previous meetings and have not played since a home-and-home the Irish swept in 2004-05. Georgia would be the lone SEC school to host a playoff game in this scenario, and if they win the SEC championship game then Texas would be in that spot. They can compare schedules with Indiana. Boise State (41.2 ppg.) and SMU (39.3 ppg.) rank in the top six in scoring offense this season. How would they fare at hostile 100,000-plus venues at Ohio Stadium and Beaver Stadium? College Football Playoff quarterfinal predictions A look at the College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchups for the 2024-25 season. Those games will be played at the traditional New Year's Day Six bowl sites: DATE BOWL MATCHUP Dec. 31 Vrbo Fiesta Bowl (quarterfinal) No. 4 Arizona State vs. No. 5 Ohio State Jan. 1 Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl (quarterfinal) No. 3 Miami vs. No. 6 Penn State Jan. 1 Rose Bowl Game presented by Prudential (quarterfinal) No. 1 Oregon vs. No. 8 Georgia Jan. 1 Allstate Sugar Bowl (quarterfinal) No. 2 Texas vs. No. 7 Notre Dame Ignore the seeding and just look at the field. Would an eight-team playoff be better? The Sun Devils and Hurricanes would be underdogs against Big Ten teams, and that matchup between Oregon and Georgia was our pick for the CFP championship game in Week 1 1. College Football Playoff semifinal predictions A look at the College Football Playoff semifinal matchups for the 2024-25 season. Those games will be played at the traditional New Year's Day Six bowl sites: DATE BOWL MATCHUP Jan. 9 Capital One Orange Bowl (semifinal) No. 2 Texas vs. No. 6 Penn State Jan. 10 Cotton Bowl Classic (semifinal) No. 1 Oregon vs. No. 5 Ohio State Three Big Ten teams in the semifinals? A potential three-match between the Ducks and Buckeyes? That is in the cards in this week's projection. We considered picking Notre Dame against Texas, and we would not be surprised if the Irish could make it two straight victories against SEC teams. The Longhorns are the only team among these four that played in the four-team College Football Playoff last season. Would they take advantage of the close-to-home atmosphere at the Cotton Bowl? College Football Playoff championship pick A look at the College Football Playoff championship matchup for the 2024-25 season. That game is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. DATE BOWL MATCHUP Jan. 20 CFP National championship No. 2 Texas vs. No. 5 Ohio State Yes, we have changed our CFP championship pick the last four weeks. Some of that is dictated on how those matchups are playing out each week. The Buckeyes have been the constant the last three weeks, and they could lose the Big Ten championship game and we still see them making this run. Ditto for Texas. Quinn Ewers – who played one year at Ohio State – would be the focus of this matchup, which would be a blue-blooded classic befitting of the first 12-team championship game.
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — KyKy Tandy scored 21 points and Florida Atlantic pulled away late in the second half to beat Oklahoma State 86-78 on Thursday in the Charleston Classic. It was the second straight loss by a Power Four team in the tournament after Miami fell to Drake in the opener. Florida Atlantic (4-2) plays the Bulldogs in the semifinals on Friday at 11:30 a.m., while Oklahoma State (3-1) battles the Hurricanes in a consolation game at 2 p.m. Leland Walker completed a three-point play with 4:38 left in the second half to give FAU its first lead, 68-67, since it was 16-14. Tandy made a 3-pointer from the corner to cap FAU’s 11-1 run for a 75-68 lead with 2:41 left. Oklahoma State went five-plus minutes without a field goal late in the second half until Brandon Newman made a fast-break layup with 1:17 remaining. But Ken Evans Jr. answered with a three-point play at the other end for a nine-point lead. The Cowboys turned it over on their next possession with 52.3 seconds left. Evans finished with 13 points, Walker scored 12 and Tre Carroll had 10 for FAU. The Owls attempted 49 free throws leading to three Oklahoma State players fouling out and three others finishing with four fouls. Khalil Brantley had 16 points and Robert Jennings II scored a career-high 14 points to go with 11 rebounds for Oklahoma State. Patrick Suemnick was helped off the floor with 1:40 left in the first half and did not return. Oklahoma State led 39-34 at halftime despite making just 33.3% of its shots. FAU shot a better percentage from the field (47.8) than at the free-throw line (46.7) in the first half.Luke Littler whitewashes Rob Cross with ridiculous average in Players Championship Finals days after topping £1million
It’s far from panic stations, but Houston definitely has a problem. Last week’s shock loss to the Titans posed more questions of DeMeco Ryans’ side, starting with the offensive line and some of C.J. Stroud’s puzzling decisions with the football. Still on track to win the AFC South, the Texans have time to turn things around, but falling out of favor in the power rankings, this is a team that could be on a fast track to an early playoff exit. ESPN – 12th “The Texans are fifth in total defense (allowing 303.1 yards per game), with the second-most sacks (42) and interceptions (15). Kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn also set an NFL record for most 50-yard field goals (12) Sunday. The Texans' special teams and defense are playing well, but the team's issue is its offense. Houston has only one touchdown after halftime since Week 6. Quarterback C.J. Stroud hasn't played as well as he did in his rookie season and currently has 14 touchdowns to nine interceptions.” - DJ Bien-Aime The Sporting News – 13th “What was that? The Texans' pass defense and pass protection concerns continue to be big-picture bugaboos.” - Vinnie Iyer NFL.com - 12th “The Texans are flirting with disaster, having lost four of their past six games, but it says something about the AFC South that Houston remains the overwhelming favorite to host a playoff game come January. The problem is, this just doesn’t look like a playoff operation right now. Can we talk about C.J. Stroud's struggles? His two interceptions against Tennessee came on poor throws made as the result of bad decisions. The first one gifted the Titans a field goal right before half. That plus a Ka'imi Fairbairn miss (from 28 yards -- it was the second kick under 30 yards he's missed this year) cost them a net six points in a five-point loss. The defense sacked Will Levis eight times and ran back a pick-six but also allowed Levis to semi-carve Houston up when he wasn't getting hit. There are more imposing challenges on the horizon (vs. Dolphins, at Chiefs, vs. Ravens in Weeks 15-17), so the Texans have to tighten things up.” - Eric Edholm CBS – 14th “This team just isn't right. Losing at home to the Titans won't badly hurt their playoff chances in a bad division, but they need to get it going. C.J. Stroud looks off.” - Pete PriscoNoneSANTA ANA, Calif., Dec. 13, 2024 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — In a groundbreaking move for the property management and inspection industry, DrBalcony ( drbalcony.com ) introduces its cutting-edge app, a pioneering digital platform designed to revolutionize the balcony inspection process.
