REGINA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has appointed a new lieutenant-governor for Saskatchewan. Bernadette McIntyre is to serve in the role, representing the King in the province. Her duties include swearing in cabinet ministers, opening each session of the legislative assembly and providing royal assent to provincial bills. McIntyre has held executive roles at Saskatchewan Government Insurance and Wascana Centre Authority in Regina. She has also been a long-time community volunteer, receiving awards for her contributions in the sport of curling. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Margaret Sanchez is the new president and CEO of Esperanza, a Cleveland nonprofit that focuses on education in the Hispanic/Latinix communities. Sanchez previously served as the vice president of development at YWCA Greater Cleveland, a statement from Esperanza said. Throughout her career, she has advocated for minority communities, through her work at various nonprofits, such as Hispanic Unity of Florida and the National Association of Latino Elected Officials, Esperanza added. She was chosen after a yearlong search. She serves as a board member for the Northeast Ohio Hispanic Business Center, the Latin American Presidential Mission and on the city of Cleveland Hispanic Advisory Board. Pamela Hobe, Esperanza’s board president, said in a statement that the organization was “fortunate to find the ideal candidate right here in Northeast Ohio.” “Margaret’s broad experience, unique perspective, understanding of our community and collaborative leadership style will foster growth and lead us to the future,” Hobe said. Sanchez replaces Victor Ruiz, who announced in December 2023 that he was stepping down as president and CEO after 15 years . The organization worked with Koya Partners, a firm that specializes in executive searches and recruiting, particularly for mission-driven roles, on the national search for the new president and CEO. “Her passion for Esperanza’s mission and her diverse experience makes her the ideal leader to drive strategic solutions for our growing Latino community and successfully expand support services to learners of all ages,” he said. Esperanza offers programs for kids, adult learners and post-secondary students. It also has a Hispanic youth and leadership program, mentoring and a STEAM summer camp for students interested in science, technology, engineering, arts and math. TOKYO — Shohei Ohtani is going to save the newspaper industry in Japan — singlehandedly. The Japanese and Los Angeles Dodgers superstar won his third Most Valuable Player award, this time picking up his first MVP in the National League. He'd already won two in the American League — in 2021 and 2023 — playing with the Los Angeles Angels. The award triggered Japanese newspapers to print special editions, given out on Friday morning in central Tokyo. Japan is 14 hours ahead of New York and the east coast of the United States. “Every year Ohtani has set records that probably no one else can break,” Yoshio Inoue, a student, said while getting his copy. This comes less than a month after Ohtani and the Dodgers won the World Series, which also prompted the special editions that are fought over as collectors' items. Several newspapers offered their own renditions, but every one highlighted “MVP” in large letters and an image of Ohtani in Dodgers blue. By Michelle Conlin NEW YORK (Reuters) - Several key players in President-elect Donald Trump's new cryptocurrency venture head to Abu Dhabi on Monday for the largest bitcoin gathering in the Gulf region as the digital currency sets record highs. Speakers include the president-elect's son Eric and billionaire Steve Witkoff, the new White House envoy for the Middle East and co-founder of World Liberty Financial, a crypto platform launched in September that Donald Trump and his family helped form. Eric Trump will deliver Tuesday's keynote address at the Bitcoin MENA conference, which is projected to draw more than 6,000 people, and will then hold a "whale-only" chat in the conference's VIP lounge, according to the event's agenda. Witkoff will also speak separately to that more exclusive crowd, which requires a $9,999 "whale" pass, a nickname for large players who have potential to move a market. The president-elect is World Liberty Financial's chief crypto advocate, and sons Eric, Don Jr. and Barron are ambassadors, according to the WLF website. Company filings show Donald Trump is entitled to 22.5 billion WLF tokens and a share of its revenues. "The bitcoin conference carries a lot of significance for crypto as it's one of the longest-running conferences focused on bringing our industry together," said Marshall Beard, chief operating officer of Gemini, the crypto exchange founded by Trump backers Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. In July 2022, Walton County deputies were contacted about child sexual abuse material uploaded to a Google account, according to a Dec. 23 news release by the Alcovy Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office. Deputies met with Hunter Lawless, who is accused of admitting to receiving the child abuse material from Zachary Zulock, officials said. Lawless pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation of children and was sentenced, officials said. McClatchy News reached out to the Alcovy Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office on Dec. 23 to clarify his sentencing and was awaiting a response. Police performed a search warrant on the home of Zachary Jacoby Zulock and William Dale Zulock and eventually learned the two men had been sexually abusing their adopted sons, prosecutors said. The abuse began a “few years before the search warrant was executed,” officials said. “Those involved with the investigation and prosecution of this case will never forget what they had to see and hear in this case,” Randy McGinley, the Alcovy district attorney, said in the release. “These two defendants truly created a house of horrors and put their extremely dark desires above everything and everyone else. However, the depth of the defendants’ depravity, which is as deep as it gets, is not greater than the resolve of those that fought for justice and the strength of the victims in this case. The resolve I have seen from these two young victims over the last two years is truly inspiring,” While searching, officers reported finding electronic evidence showing the two men sexually abusing the boys on different occasions throughout different rooms in the home. Different cell phones also contained graphic images and videos of the abuse along with graphic text messages, officials said. The evidence led officials to Luis Vizcarro-Sanchez after they saw he had been receiving messages from one of the men about the sexual abuse of one of the victims, officials said. Vizcarro-Sanchez pleaded guilty to pandering for a person under 18 and was sentenced, the release said. In August, William Zulock pleaded guilty to aggravated sodomy, aggravated child molestation, incest, and sexual exploitation of children, officials said. In October, Zachary Zulock pleaded guilty to aggravated sodomy, aggravated child molestation, incest, sodomy, sexual exploitation of children and pandering of a person under 18. They were sentenced to 100 years in prison followed by life on probation and will not be eligible for parole for the entire 100 years, officials said. Walton County is about a 50-mile drive east of Atlanta. The Google Photos Recap highlights memorable photos and videos from the year, pairing them with graphics and cinematic effects. Select users in the United States are able to get a Recap that includes personalized captions generated by the Google Gemini AI model. Recap will also provide tidbits about the year based on images captured, such as longest photo streak, who you took the most photos of, top colors photographed, and who you smiled most with. Recap memories and insights can be shared from Google Photos directly to messaging apps and social media apps.
