In a withering attack on the company, whose specialism in platinum group metals has made it a leader in catalytic converters, the investment arm of the US group Standard Industries told Johnson Matthey directors they should consider breaking up the group. Standard Industries, which holds 11 per cent of Johnson Matthey, emerged as a leading shareholder in the spring of 2022 following the departure of the previous chief executive, a costly exit from battery technologies and the arrival of the current boss, Liam Condon.
