South Korean authorities seek warrant to detain impeached presidentSaquon Barkley ninth player with 2,000-yard rushing season

Luke Richardson was fired as coach of the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday, the NHL club announced, after the team stumbled to the league's worst record so far this season. Swede Anders Sorensen, coach of the Blackhawks' top developmental club, was named interim coach for the NHL squad. Richardson, a 55-year-old Canadian, went 57-118 with 15 overtime losses in three seasons with Chicago. The Blackhawks are 8-16 with two overtime losses this season for a league-low 18 points after going 19-54-9 last season, second-worst in the NHL, and 26-49-7 in 2022-23, third-worst in the league. "Today I made the difficult decision to move on from Luke as our head coach," Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson said. "As we have begun to take steps forward in our rebuilding process, we felt that the results did not match our expectations for a higher level of execution this season and ultimately came to the decision that a change was necessary." The Blackhawks are on a four-game losing streak and 3-9-1 in their past 13 starts with 2.42 goals a game this season, second worst in the NHL. They have reached the Stanley Cup playoffs only once over the past seven seasons. "I fully support Kyle's decision in making this change as he continues to do what is needed to move our team forward," Blackhawks chairman and chief executive Danny Wirtz said. "I have the utmost confidence in him and the rest of our hockey operations team as they begin their search for the next head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks." Richardson became the third NHL coach fired this season after Boston dumped Jim Montgomery last month. He was hired five days later by St. Louis after the Blues fired Drew Bannister. js/bbA bankruptcy judge on Monday ordered a new hearing in conspiracy theorist Alex Jones' effort to stop the satirical news outlet The Onion from buying Infowars and turning it into a parody. Jones alleges fraud and collusion marred the bankruptcy auction in which The Onion was named the winning bidder on Nov. 14 over a company affiliated with him. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez had been scheduled to hear an emergency motion to disqualify The Onion's bid, but decided to put it off until either Dec. 9 or Dec. 17. That's also when the judge will hear arguments on a request to approve the sale of Infowars to The Onion. Lopez said similar arguments are being made in both requests. Lopez could ultimately allow The Onion to move forward with its purchase, order a new auction or name the other bidder as the winner. At stake is whether Jones gets to stay at Infowars’ studio in Austin, Texas, under a new owner friendly to him, or whether he gets kicked out by The Onion. The other bidder, First United American Companies, runs a website in Jones’ name that sells nutritional supplements. Regardless, Jones has set up a new studio, websites and social media accounts that would allow him to keep airing his show. And his personal account with 3.3 million followers on the social platform X was not part of the sale, although Lopez will be deciding whether it should be included in the liquidation and sold off later. In a new court filing Monday, lawyers for X objected to any sale of the accounts of both Jones and Infowars, saying X is the owner of the accounts and that it has not given consent for them to be sold or transferred. Jones has praised X owner Elon Musk on his show and suggested that Musk should buy Infowars. Musk has not responded publicly to that suggestion and was not among the bidders. Jones' bankruptcy and the liquidation of his assets came about after he was ordered to pay nearly $1.5 billion to relatives of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. Jones was found liable for defamation and emotional distress damages in lawsuits in Connecticut and Texas for repeatedly calling the 2012 shooting that killed 20 first graders and six educators a hoax staged by actors to increase gun control. Proceeds from the liquidation are to go to Jones' creditors, including the Sandy Hook families who sued him. Jones alleges The Onion’s bid was the result of fraud and collusion involving many of those families, the humor site and a court-appointed trustee who is overseeing the liquidation. First United American Companies submitted a $3.5 million sealed bid, while The Onion offered $1.75 million in cash. But The Onion's bid also included a pledge by Sandy Hook families to forgo some or all of the auction proceeds due to them to give other creditors a total of $100,000 more than they would receive under other bids. The trustee, Christopher Murray, said that made The Onion's proposal better for creditors and he named it the winning bid. He has denied any wrongdoing. Jones and First United American Companies claimed that the bid violated Lopez’s rules for the auction by including multiple entities and lacking a valid dollar amount. Jones also alleged Murray improperly canceled an expected round of live bidding and only selected from among the sealed bids that were submitted. Jones called the auction “rigged” and a “fraud” on his show, which airs on the Infowars website, radio stations and Jones' X account. He filed a counter lawsuit last week against Murray, The Onion's parent company and the Sandy Hook families in the bankruptcy court. In a court filing on Sunday, Murray called the allegations a “desperate attempt” to delay the sale of Infowars to The Onion and accused Jones, his lawyers and attorneys for First United American Companies of a “vicious smear campaign lobbing patently false accusations.” He also alleges Jones collaborated with First United American Companies to try to buy Infowars. Lopez’s September order on the auction procedures made a live bidding round optional. And it gave broad authority to Murray to conduct the sale, including the power to reject any bid, no matter how high, that was “contrary to the best interests” of Jones, his company and their creditors. But at a Nov. 14 hearing Lopez said he was concerned about the process and transparency. “We’re all going to an evidentiary hearing and I’m going to figure out exactly what happened,” he said. “No one should feel comfortable with the results of this auction.” The assets of Infowars' parent company, Free Speech Systems, that were up for sale included the Austin studio, Infowars' video archive, video production equipment, product trademarks, and Infowars' websites and social media accounts. Jones is appealing the $1.5 billion in judgments citing free speech rights, but has acknowledged that the school shooting happened . Jones has brought in millions of dollars a year in revenue by hawking nutritional supplements, clothing, survival gear and other merchandise, including more than $22 million this year through Sept. 30 from his Infowars Store website, according to court documents. Many of Jones’ personal assets, including real estate, guns and other personal belongings, also are being sold as part of the bankruptcy. Documents filed in court this year say Jones has about $9 million in personal assets, while Free Speech Systems has about $6 million in cash and more than $1 million worth of inventory. GREAT BARRINGTON — "What fire?" responded a laughing Dillon Mahon on Wednesday afternoon. The marketing director at Ski Butternut said it in jest, but after a whirlwind two weeks, the wildfire that stunned Berkshire County seems like a distant memory as Opening Day of the 2024-25 ski season is upon us. "Pretty much, got done with the fire, started making snow and now we're ready to go skiing," Mahon told The Eagle over the phone. "What a difference a couple of weeks makes." "We were shooting water into the woods. At one point, we turned some snowguns on to hit the buildings. We were seeing ashes, not really burning embers, but black stuff coming from the sky." — Dillon Mahon, Marketing director A National Guard helicopter was scooping water from the snowmaking pond at Ski Butternut to help fight the wildfire two weeks ago. With Thursday's natural accumulation aiding and abetting, Butternut is set to join Jiminy Peak in opening for snow business Friday morning. Berkshire East and Catamount are planning to drop the ropes on first chair Saturday, while Bousquet is planning on a Dec. 13 opener with the Garden boardshop's Kick Off rail jam event. Back on Nov. 18, though, it was hard for Mahon and the Ski Butternut family to think much about shredding some powder on Upper Applejack. A wildfire on the other side of Great Barrington was sending smoke up over the mountains surrounding the ski hill. Within days, a National Guard helicopter was making runs scooping water from the snowmaking pond to help fight the blaze as it summited another mountaintop and started chewing its way down toward the upper lodge. "We were here the whole time," said Mahon. "By the end of the day, you could see flames up on the ridges, we had people here all night monitoring. By Wednesday, bunch of fire companies on sight cutting fire breaks. Later in the afternoon, the basin filled with thick smoke after the wind shifted. A wild day, smoky base area, couldn't see building to building. "We were shooting water into the woods. At one point, we turned some snowguns on to hit the buildings. We were seeing ashes, not really burning embers, but black stuff coming from the sky. Just in case any of that was hot. That was probably the scariest part of it." By Nov. 21, a steady rainfall blessed the Berkshires after two insanely dry months. That lingering drizzle eventually turned into the first snowflakes of the season. "A weird conclusion to it," said Mahon. "As I'm looking out my window to the right, behind the upper lodge, that hill in particular, it was coming down toward the triple chair." The wildfire that burned through Great Barrington ultimately will not hinder opening day plans at Ski Butternut. Mahon spent chunks of the last two weeks answering all sorts of calls from concerned skiers near and far, checking in, to various media asking about the "Butternut Fire." The somewhat unfortunate name threw the ski area for a bit of a loop. Mahon said the fire department had to come out and say that although it was being labeled that, Ski Butternut neither started the fire, nor was currently burning to the ground. Ski Butternut, here last December, will open for operations this weekend. And now, it's time to ride. Mahon said he's been at Butternut for eight years, and this is only the second or third time they've been able to get enough coverage on the slopes to open the first week of December. The creek, which dried out earlier in the fall has been replenished and temperatures in the teens allowed round-the-clock blasting to pile up the good stuff. Butternut plans to open Friday through Sunday, and then reopen for good on Dec. 13. Fridays will see the return of $25 lift tickets through their renewed partnership with L.L. Bean. That'll also provide Saturday s'mores on the deck. And speaking of that upper lodge that dodged a potential catastrophe, Butternut is throwing it back. "We just reopened the upper lodge, the bar upstairs, calling it Channing's," said Mahon, noting that news got a lot of "about time" comments on social media. "Channing Murdock was the founder and original owner of Butternut, we've reimagined it into the bar space it was. Craft beer, live music, some light fare. That's kind of a new thing to the area we're excited about. Everybody is psyched for that." There'll be the traditional Fe-brew-ary beer tastings on Wednesdays, and Butternut also joined forces with the Freedom Pass. A lower-key competitor with Ikon and Epic, Freedom Pass features now 21 smaller mountains around the country. Holders of Butternut's unlimited season pass get three free lift tickets to any Freedom Pass mountain, a list that includes Lost Valley in Maine, McIntyre in New Hampshire, Mount Southington in Connecticut and Yawgoo Valley in Rhode Island, alongside hills as far off as Oregon, Alaska, New Mexico and Spain.Braden Smith set career highs with 34 points and six 3-pointers as No. 21 Purdue pulled away from Toledo 83-64 in a nonconference matchup on Sunday night in West Lafayette, Ind. Smith went 12 of 22 from the floor and added 12 assists and three steals for the Boilermakers (9-4). Trey Kaufman-Renn added 23 points on 11-of-14 shooting, and Fletcher Loyer chipped in 17 points. Sam Lewis collected 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Sonny Wilson also scored 13 points to lead Toledo (6-6). Seth Hubbard supplied 11 points. The Rockets trailed by 11 at halftime and by 13 after two free throws by Smith with 18:24 to go in the game. Four Toledo players then contributed points to an 8-0 run to pull within 43-38 with 16:44 to play. The lead hovered between five and 10 points until Smith's layup began a 17-2 spree that effectively sealed the win. Toledo, which finished at 40.6 percent from the floor, missed nine straight shots as Purdue took off. Smith entered the game averaging 12.9 points per game. The Boilermakers shot 49.2 percent from the floor and 10 of 28 on 3-point attempts. The Rockets made just 2 of 14 from deep. Toledo led 12-10 on Hubbard's jumper with 13:43 left in the first half, but the Rockets went cold. They missed 11 of their next 12 shots, and the Boilermakers heated up. Smith scored nine points in an 18-2 burst, which Loyer capped with a three-point play with 5:39 left in the half. Purdue made 7 of 9 shots from the floor during the run. The Boilermakers led 39-28 at the break after shooting 50 percent from the floor. Smith had 17 points and Loyer had 12, with each player making three 3-pointers. Wilson had seven first-half points for the Rockets, who fell to 36.4 percent shooting for the half after making 5 of 9 to begin the game. --Field Level MediaWILMINGTON, N.C. The Tampa Bay Rays have had six of their 2025 regular-season games shifted to the early season due to weather issues from playing outside, Major League Baseball announced Monday. The Rays' usual home, domed Tropicana Field, was damaged by Hurricane Milton last month with almost all of its roof shredded and no possibility of playing there next year. As a result, the Rays moved their 2025 home games from St. Petersburg to the New York Yankees training complex at nearby Tampa, which has an 11,000-seat outdoor stadium. An April series scheduled against the Los Angeles Angels that had been set for California will instead be played April 8-10 in Florida. A series between the two which had been set for August in Florida will now be hosted by the Angels on August 4-6. A Rays series against the Minnesota Twins planned in Minneapolis from May 26-28 will instead be played on the same dates in Tampa while a series that had been set for Tampa on July 4-6 will now be played in Minnesota. Florida summers can bring extreme heat and rain. js/bspBarrington Hargress, Nate Pickens rally UC Riverside to 81-79 OT victory over St. Thomas=Minnesota

The Taylor Swift Effect is driving demand for advanced smart home technology, immersive entertainment spaces and bold design elements that reflect the pop icon’s influence, and home experience designers are collaborating with architects and builders to reimagine living spaces to meet these new desires. Including these amenities in custom homes makes good business sense for builders, especially because 78% of potential homebuyers say they would pay extra for a smart home . The power of young influencers In ultra-high-end custom homes, the significance of younger family members’ wants is growing rapidly. Children from affluent families have specific tastes shaped by pop culture and media, especially Swift’s music. For this generation, home design isn’t just about style — it’s about creating spaces that blend functionality and fun in a digitally harmonious living environment. Swift’s eclectic style and dynamic career are reflected in these designs, where rooms must be adaptable to different purposes, much like Swift herself shifts between genres and personas. Homeowners are requesting multi-functional spaces that serve both practical and entertaining purposes — homework zones by day, party rooms by night. Concert-like entertainment spaces Home experience designers are working with builders to plan homes that blend tech, entertainment and architecture. A key feature of this Swift-inspired trend is state-of-the-art media rooms and entertainment spaces that offer an experience rivaling live concerts. Swift is known for her theatrical performances, and her fans want to bring that same energy into their homes. As a result, modern home designs incorporate embedded audiovisual technology, surround sound systems and customizable lighting to create immersive entertainment hubs. These spaces aren’t just for watching movies — they’re designed for everything from music listening parties to live streaming events. With Swift’s latest hits playing in the background, these entertainment areas become dynamic spaces where families can enjoy a concert-like experience at home, whether they are out back near the pool or rocking out inside the home gym. Social media-ready design In an age where Instagram and TikTok dominate, having a modern luxury home that looks good on camera is a priority. Young influencers are driving the demand for visually striking spaces that pop on social media. Inspired by vibrant aesthetics, design elements like bold color schemes, playful lighting and eye-catching furniture are becoming more popular. Parents want homes that serve not only as functional living spaces but also as Instagrammable moments for the whole family. Swift-inspired interiors, whether reflecting the playful energy of Lover or the cozy vibes of Folklore, are increasingly requested by younger family members who want their homes to mirror their favorite pop star’s style. These design elements balance luxury and creativity, offering families a stylish space that remains practical and visually appealing. Every corner of the home is now seen as a potential backdrop for social media, blending aesthetic appeal with everyday functionality. Transformable spaces One of the most exciting innovations stemming from this new genre is the demand for spaces that can transform at the touch of a button. Modern luxury homes are now being designed with the ability to shift between different functions instantly, creating rooms that go from homework-friendly to entertainment-ready with ease. For example, mood lighting and color change lighting can be adjusted to create versatile atmospheres, while artwork can double as ultra-high-definition screens for eclectic parties, gaming or movie nights. These transformable rooms support productivity and leisure, making them the perfect environment for homeowners’ multifaceted lifestyles. The future of luxury homes The Taylor Swift Effect on home design shows how pop culture and younger generations are reshaping luxury real estate. By incorporating advanced technology, immersive entertainment spaces and adaptable rooms, designers are meeting the demands of homeowners who want creative, functional and stylish homes that allow them to live in harmony. As this trend evolves, we’ll see more luxury homes that embrace these Swift-worthy features — multi-functional, bold and designed to meet the needs of a generation that thrives on creativity and technology, all while fostering an environment that encourages harmony and well-being. Stephen Smith is the solutions engineering manager for home experience design company Bravas , based in Austin, Texas. The firm partners with homeowners, architects, builders and interior designers to help clients live in harmony with their homes.

Biden welcomed 2,500 guests to the South Lawn under sunny skies as he cracked jokes about the fates of “Peach” and “Blossom” and sounded wistful tones about the last weeks of his presidency after a half-century in Washington power circles. “It’s been the honor of my life. I’m forever grateful,” Biden said, taking note of his impending departure on Jan. 20, 2025. That's when power will transfer to Republican President-elect Donald Trump, the man Biden defeated four years ago and was battling again until he was pressured to bow out of the race amid concerns about his age and viability. Biden is 82. Until Inauguration Day, the president and first lady Jill Biden will continue a busy run of festivities that will double as their long goodbye. The White House schedule in December is replete with holiday parties for various constituencies, from West Wing staff to members of Congress and the White House press corps. Biden relished the brief ceremony with the pardoned turkeys, named for the official flower of the president's home state of Delaware. “The peach pie in my state is one of my favorites,” he said during remarks that were occasionally interrupted by Peach gobbling atop the table to Biden's right. “Peach is making a last-minute plea,” Biden said at one point, drawing laughter from an overflow crowd that included Cabinet members, White House staff and their families, and students from 4H programs and Future Farmers of America chapters. Biden introduced Peach as a bird who “lives by the motto, ‘Keep calm and gobble on.’” Blossom, the president said, has a different motto: “No fowl play. Just Minnesota nice.” Peach and Blossom came from the farm of John Zimmerman, near the southern Minnesota city of Northfield. Zimmerman, who has raised about 4 million turkeys, is president of the National Turkey Federation, the group that has gifted U.S. presidents Thanksgiving turkeys since the Truman administration after World War II. President Harry Truman, however, preferred to eat the birds. Official pardon ceremonies did not become an annual White House tradition until the administration of President George H.W. Bush in 1989. With their presidential reprieve, Peach and Blossom will live out their days at Farmamerica, an agriculture interpretative center near Waseca in southern Minnesota. The center's aim is to promote agriculture and educate future farmers and others about agriculture in America. Separately Monday, first lady Jill Biden received the official White House Christmas tree that will be decorated and put on display in the Blue Room. The 18.5 foot (5.64 meters) Fraser fir came from a farm in an area of western North Carolina that recently was devastated by Hurricane Helene . Cartner’s Christmas Tree Farm lost thousands of trees in the storm “but this one remained standing and they named it ‘Tremendous’ for the extraordinary hope that it represents,” Jill Biden said at the event. The Bidens were also traveling to New York City on Monday for an evening “Friendsgiving” event at a Coast Guard station on Staten Island. Biden began his valedictory calendar Friday night with a gala for hundreds of his friends, supporters and staff members who gathered in a pavilion erected on the South Lawn, with a view out to the Lincoln Memorial. Cabinet secretaries, Democratic donors and his longest-serving staff members came together to hear from the president and pay tribute, with no evidence that Biden was effectively forced from the Democratic ticket this summer and watched Vice President Kamala Harris suffer defeat on Nov. 5. “I’m so proud that we’ve done all of this with a deep belief in the core values of America,” said Biden, sporting a tuxedo for the black-tie event. Setting aside his criticisms of Trump as a fundamental threat to democracy, Biden added his characteristic national cheerleading: “I fully believe that America is better positioned to lead the world today than at any point in my 50 years of public service.” The first lady toasted her husband with a nod to his 2020 campaign promise to “restore the soul of the nation,” in Trump’s aftermath. With the results on Election Day, however, Biden’s four years now become sandwiched in the middle of an era dominated by Trump's presence on the national stage and in the White House. Even as the first couple avoided the context surrounding the president's coming exit, those political realities were nonetheless apparent, as younger Democrats like Maryland Gov. Wes Moore , Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Biden's Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg not only raised their glasses to the president but held forth with many attendees who could remain in the party's power circles in the 2028 election cycle and beyond. ___ Associated Press writer Steve Karnowski in Minneapolis contributed to this report.

An independent candidate, he has focused his campaign on criticising NATO and pushing for reduced support for Ukraine. Most polls predicted Calin Georgescu to win less than 10% of the vote in the first round of 's presidential election. However, the 62-year-old obscure far-right populist shook the country's political landscape by and advancing to the second round to face off against reformist Elena Lasconi of the progressive Save Romania Union party. He also beat the incumbent Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu of the Social Democratic Party, leaving the ruling party for the first time in Romania’s 35-year post-communist history without a candidate in the runoff, set for Dec. 8. The surprising outcome has left many political observers wondering how most local surveys were off, putting Georgescu behind at least five other candidates. “The debates in these campaigns were very low in quality and ideas,” he said.
