During a visit to " The View " on Wednesday, the radio host fell into a heated debate with host Whoopi Goldberg over the president's decision to clear his son of several tax and gun-related charges. In particular, Charlamagne took offense at Biden's insistence that he w "All of the criticism is valid because, you know, Democrats stand on this moral high ground all the time, and, you know, they act so self-righteous," he shared. [President Biden] kept saying things like, 'You know, nobody is above the law, I respect the jury’s decision in regards to my son.' He didn’t believe that, but he didn’t have to volunteer that lie to begin with." Goldberg countered that Biden was flipping the table of a rigged game. "He got sick of watching everybody else get over," Goldberg shared, seemingly pointing to the vacated cases against President-elect Donald Trump . "Why can’t you say when Democrats are wrong?" Charlamagne asked in reply. "And why can’t Republicans say when Republicans are wrong?” The pair then called each other "ridiculous," but made up before the end of the segment. Related Joe Biden’s Hunter lesson: The political high road is a mirage The president laid out his reasoning for pardoning Hunter Biden in a statement shared earlier this week. He said that his son was the victim of "raw politics" and that the cases against him were an attack from the GOP. "No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son – and that is wrong," he said. "In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me – and there’s no reason to believe it will stop here. Enough is enough." ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Safety Micah Hyde has rejoined the Buffalo Bills by signing to the practice squad on Wednesday in a late-season move that brings experience, stability, leadership and familiarity with the defensive scheme to the five-time defending AFC East champions. In announcing the move, coach Sean McDermott stressed that as much as he welcomes Hyde’s addition, it in no way reflects on Buffalo’s safety group led by starters Taylor Rapp and Damar Hamlin . Hyde’s return shouldn’t surprise anyone after the 33-year-old and the team spent the past eight months keeping the door open for such a possibility. "The leadership piece, for sure," McDermott said. “I’ve said this when he was here playing, he could go down to the bank at the corner and be the president of the bank just as easy as he could be the captain of the Buffalo Bills, right?” he added. “So he just has a unique way about him from a leadership standpoint of who he is as a person and his presence and the way he’s very adaptable to people and to his surroundings." Hyde is an 11-year NFL veteran who spent the previous seven seasons in Buffalo and was not re-signed in March after completing the final year of his contract. In considering retirement, Hyde noted he’d only play for Buffalo if he decided to resume his career. “We’re in a good spot, very confident in the guys that have played there all season long and have both done a nice job,” McDermott said of having no plans to shake up his safety group with Hyde's addition. “It’s about the team. It’s always about the team, and it’s never about one person. And in this case, Micah would not want that to be, in this case, about him.” Though it’s unclear if or when Hyde will play, the former defensive captain brings insight and leadership to a team that is off to a 10-2 start and coming off a division-clinching 35-10 win over the San Francisco 49ers. The Bills travel to play the Los Angeles Rams (6-6) on Sunday. After missing a majority of the 2022 season with a severe neck injury, Hyde returned to start 14 games last season. Hyde and Jordan Poyer formed the Bills starting safety tandem since they were among the first two players signed by the Bills in free agency in March 2017, months after McDermott was hired as coach. Poyer was released by Buffalo in March and now plays for Miami. Hyde spent his first four seasons in Green Bay before signing with Buffalo, where he earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2017 and 2021. As the political, economic, and military landscape continues to evolve, Moscow will need to adopt a more nuanced and flexible approach to navigate the complexities of the Middle East and safeguard its strategic interests in the face of mounting challenges and uncertainties. Failure to do so could further erode Russia's position in the region and limit its ability to shape events in the Middle East in the years to come.

When baseball historian Bill Humber first heard about the golden at-bat idea that Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred floated on a recent podcast, he was a little taken aback. “I kind of laughed, actually,” Humber said Wednesday. “I thought it was one of the stupidest ideas I’d ever heard.” MLB has seen its share of change of late, but the thought of a team using one at-bat each game to send any hitter it wants to the plate — even if it’s not their turn in the batting order — was quite a curveball. “This can’t be real,” former Blue Jays pitcher and seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens posted on social media. Wild-card playoff tinkering, pitch clocks, shift rules and automatic runners are some of the more significant changes to the game in recent years. All had varying levels of detractors and the golden at-bat discussion is no different. Critics are eyeing it like a meatball thrown across the middle of the plate. “It doesn’t really fit within the logic of the game in my mind,” said Humber, a Canadian Baseball Hall of Famer. “I look upon it quite askance to be honest with you. I don’t see the point of it in a way. “I mean to some extent, the magic of baseball is those unheralded batters who arrive at a situation that one wouldn’t have thought that they would ever have been in, and allowing them to bat in place.” Humber cited a number of grand baseball moments that might not have happened if a golden at-bat rule were in effect. “One can imagine when Bobby Thomson hit his famous home run against the (Brooklyn) Dodgers in 1951, Willie Mays was on deck,” he said of the ‘Shot Heard ‘Round the World’ that gave the New York Giants the National League pennant. “What if they had a golden at-bat and put Mays at bat, maybe he would have struck out or popped up or hit into a double-play or who knows what. There’s lots of situations like that.” What about the two famous World Series-winning walkoffs? Would the skippers have used a golden at-bat to get their best pure hitter to the plate? Bill Mazeroski went deep to give Pittsburgh the Fall Classic in 1960 and Joe Carter’s walkoff blast in 1993 gave the Blue Jays their second straight World Series title. Mazeroski’s power numbers were middling while Carter, who led the Blue Jays in homers and RBIs that year, had a mediocre batting average. “I think the magic of the game are those moments that are unpredictable and yet kind of create some of the joy of the game in our memories,” Humber said. ” I think this kind of runs afoul of that tradition. “I’m not a fan, let me say that. But that’s not to say it won’t happen.” Manfred first mentioned the golden at-bat idea publicly in an interview with John Ourand on Puck’s “The Varsity” podcast. The commissioner said the subject came up at a recent owners’ meeting. Retired sportswriter Dave Perkins, who covered the Blue Jays for years over his long career at the Toronto Star, said use of a golden at-bat would be “a travesty.” “On the surface I say it’s absolutely stupid and ridiculous,” he said. “But a lot of other things I thought were stupid and ridiculous worked their way into the games and they’re even OK with me now.” The subject of potential rule changes like the golden at-bat came up when Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins met with the Toronto chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America earlier this week. “It’s interesting to me because we went through so much change over the last couple of years,” he said. “Getting to that change was a scratch and a claw and a climb. And then once the change happened, everyone — for the most part — thought, ‘OK, that went OK and it seems like there’s a better product on the field.’ Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. “So now the dialogue around change is with a much more open mind whether it be players, staff, the exchanges, the ideas, even if they seem very difficult to wrap your head around. They’re not getting stiff-armed as much as they were the first go-round.” Scott Crawford, operations director of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, said he prefers a traditional setup where any player can be a hero at any time. “I like the team aspect of the game where you get your shot,” he said. “You can be a No. 8 hitter and you can come up with a big hit and win a World Series and (a superstar like Shohei) Ohtani can strike out.” This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 4, 2024. This ambitious project will feature groundbreaking innovations. Optical fiber cables will be laid along the road, eliminating the need for future excavations. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated surveys, and construction is expected to begin by March 2025. Equipped with modern technology and enhanced connectivity, the highway will include 24/7 network availability, National Permit Register (NPR) cameras, and efficient lighting systems. Safety remains a top priority, with features designed to reduce accidents and ensure secure travel. Ample lighting during nighttime will make driving easier and safer, while the digital highway will facilitate higher vehicle speeds and enhance the overall travel experience. NHAI has launched an ambitious plan to build 10,000 kilometres of digital highways across the country. The initiative began with the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and Hyderabad-Bengaluru Corridor, and now the Barabanki-Bahraich highway has received approval from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The highway, part of NH-927, will span 101.54 kilometres and connect key locations, including Lucknow, Shravasti airport, NH-27, and the India-Nepal border. This development will significantly enhance regional connectivity and promote economic growth in the area. A three-metre-wide duct along the highway will house optical fiber cables, providing excellent mobile and internet services. Companies will be able to lease land along the highway for a nominal fee to facilitate this connectivity. NHAI project director Saurabh Kanaujia said that the Barabanki-Bahraich highway would be transformed into a digital highway. The road from Barabanki to Rupaidiha border in Bahraich will soon be expanded to a four-lane highway. The NHAI and the revenue department have started the process of marking the area for the widening project. This expansion comes in response to the increased traffic and pressure caused by the construction of the Mahadeva Corridor. Due to heavy traffic and frequent diversions, road accidents have also risen, prompting NHAI to begin the four-lane highway project. The new highway will bring significant relief to the millions of people living in Barabanki, Bahraich, Gonda, and Balrampur districts, as well as those travelling from Nepal. Currently, around 25,000 vehicles use this highway daily. The heavy traffic load has led to frequent damage to the Sanjay Setu bridge. To alleviate this, a new 1.3-kilometre-long bridge will be constructed between the Sanjay Setu and the railway bridge, reducing pressure on both bridges. Traffic on both bridges will be directed in a one-way system. Additionally, a flyover will be built from Chapula to connect the Ayodhya Highway with the old two-lane highway to Bahraich, near the new mandi and railway crossing area.

HARARE – Several Zimbabweans are among the dozens arrested as part of a month-long crackdown by Northamptonshire Police targeting drink and drug driving offences over the festive period. According to the , the operation, which began on December 1 and runs until January 2, 2025, involves naming individuals charged with driving under the influence on the force’s website and social media pages in an effort to deter dangerous driving. This annual campaign aims to highlight the consequences of impaired driving while ensuring road safety during the holiday season. It features roadside checks and patrols at various times, including early mornings, when residual alcohol or drugs from the previous night’s celebrations may impair drivers. Notable Arrests Involving Zimbabweans Among those charged is Takwana Phiri, 27, of St Austell Way, Swindon, who was charged with driving over the legal alcohol limit. He is set to appear before Northampton Magistrates’ Court on January 10. Similarly, Philip Gobvu, 41, of Windsor Road, Wellingborough, pleaded guilty to driving over the alcohol limit and awaits sentencing. Gobvu was arrested after providing an evidential reading of 72 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, significantly above the legal limit of 35 micrograms. He was disqualified from driving and released on bail pending his sentencing on February 13. So far, 86 arrests have been made during the campaign. These include 66 drivers suspected of exceeding the alcohol limit, 19 for drug-related driving offences, and one for both. Comparatively, 2023 saw 97 arrests for drink driving and 37 for drug driving during the same campaign. Police are emphasising the importance of public awareness to curb the trend. Superintendent Richard James of Northamptonshire Police stated: “Naming offenders publicly is part of our commitment to ensuring safer roads. It’s about accountability and educating the public on the life-altering consequences of these actions.” The crackdown has sparked debates around the ethics of publicly naming offenders. Supporters argue that it acts as a deterrent, while critics believe it could lead to stigmatisation. Nonetheless, authorities maintain that the approach is necessary to address the ongoing risks of impaired driving. The campaign serves as a reminder to drivers worldwide, including Zimbabweans in the diaspora, about the serious repercussions of drink and drug driving, particularly during the holiday season. Authorities urge drivers to make responsible choices and consider alternative transportation options to prevent tragic outcomes and maintain public safety.
