A Tory peer is facing suspension from the House of Lords for calling a British-Asian peer “Lord Poppadom” and touching an MP’s braids without permission. Baroness Catherine Meyer, 71, is accused of referring to Lord Dholakia as “Lord Poppadom” twice during a taxi ride whilst visiting Rwanda as a member of the Joint Committee on Human Rights (JCHR). It is on the same visit that the Baroness is said to have complimented the hair of Labour MP Bell Ribeiro-Addy before touching it without permission. Lady Meyer originally labelled the “Lord Poppadom” accusations as “baseless” and “unfounded”. But following evidence by two witnesses, Lady Meyer conceded that the incident did happen after a dinner where she had consumed “possibly three or four glasses of wine.” Lady Meyer has not contested the incident with Ms Ribeiro-Addy and is believed to have said immediately after: “Oh gosh, I did the wrong thing,” once she noticed the MP’s body language. Ms Ribeiro said the incident made her feel “extremely uncomfortable" as she added that the incident would never have been committed by a black woman against a white woman. She said: “When you’ve seen it explained to people in the past why it’s offensive to touch black people’s – black women in particular – hair ... I don’t have the right to protest because I’m seen as being rude or difficult, and it’s just not for me to have an issue with it ... to me, it’s definitely a micro-aggression.” The widow of former US ambassador Sir Christopher Meyer said she had intended the action as a friendly gesture and claimed that she was “entirely unaware” it would not be welcomed according to a report. Lord Dholakia, who was also a member of the JCHR said he felt “shocked” and “very uncomfortable” after being informed of the remarks and stated that he could no longer continue to serve on the committee. The complaints committee which investigated the incident said that as there was no misuse or abuse of power, the behaviour did not constitute bullying but stated that as it was unwanted and impacted Lord Dholakia, it classed as harassment related to race. Ms Ribiero-Addy said of the incident in a letter: “With every week and every request to just write my complaint I grew angrier and more distressed about the situation. "Unable to put the complaint into words without becoming very upset." The committee found that the incident of touching the MP’s hair without her permission classed as harassment but acknowledged that Lady Meyer had shown remorse, acted without malicious intent and displayed a willingness to apologise for her actions. Tenstorrent raised a $693 million Series D round that values the company at more than $2.6 billion, Bloomberg first reported . The round was led by Samsung Securities and AFW Partners. The Toronto-based company said it plans to use the capital to build out its engineering team and to build artificial intelligence training servers to demonstrate its technology. The Albanese government will probe whether Meta has unlawfully promoted scams on its platforms, as the social media giant continues to take advertising money from criminals pushing blatantly fraudulent schemes on Facebook that target vulnerable Australians. Financial Services Minister Stephen Jones said he had asked his department and office to examine whether Meta was breaching existing laws, including its criminal and civil obligations. Despite the tech company’s insistence that it had since removed many offending ads and accounts, new ads appeared in recent days using the same techniques and keywords as before. Among the ads published this week were examples misusing the images of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, singer Guy Sebastian, and those linked to a bogus Salvation Army loan offer. There were also numerous ads promoting Quantum AI, which the consumer watchdog has labelled the “most prolific online investment trading platform scam” affecting Australians. It also confirmed that it had been sharing warnings with Australian Facebook users since October, telling them to “beware of scams using celebrity images to deceive you”. Sergeant Alexander Kazagrandi, with the Australian Federal Police’s Joint Policing Cybercrime Co-ordination Centre, said scam advertising was prolific in Australia and was being used “more and more extensively by organised criminal groups”. He warned that these ads were being used not just to recruit victims but to traffic people into South-East Asian scam call centres by offering them an easy way to make money. “That is essentially the same hook that is being used for Australian victims for investment scam purposes,” Kazagrandi said. Some MPs and consumer groups are concerned the bill does not go far enough, arguing it will remain far too difficult for victims to be reimbursed. Kazagrandi said more than 90,000 reports about cybercrime and scams were made to ReportCyber last year, a high proportion of which were investment scams. “On average, an investment scam in Australia will net about $81,000 to the criminal,” he said. Kazagrandi said Australians could expect to hear more about Australian police conducting raids and targeting overseas scam operations in the future, as its ongoing Operation Firestorm investigated cybercriminals based in South-East Asia and Eastern Europe. In July this year, Melbourne woman Anna was feeling stressed and vulnerable when she saw an ad on Facebook falsely claiming to feature Albanese talking about a new investment platform purportedly backed by his government. All Anna had to do – at a time when her husband had left her for another woman, and she was struggling to pay off the mortgage alone as she worked long days as an office administrator – was put in $250. “I just click ... [and] I fill out the application because I was thinking, ‘$250 I can afford’,” said Anna, 61, using a pseudonym. The advertisement was a scam, using a manipulated video of Albanese without his permission, and it connected Anna to ruthless scammers who fleeced her of $30,000 over the coming months, pushing her even further into debt. Anna said the scammers, who claimed to be from England and worked for a company called I2 Trading, tricked her into believing she was making profits on her trading, enough to pay off her mortgage. It wasn’t until she couldn’t withdraw her profits that she realised it was a con. She hadn’t seen the scam warnings previously. “I work full-time, I get home, I don’t watch the news,” she said. The mother of two, who is being assisted by the Consumer Action Law Centre, said the scammer also advised her to approach a digital lender for a loan of $30,000, coaching her to tell them the money was for home renovations. Anna says she is now paying an interest rate of 9.69 per cent on the borrowed money. It means the scam is going to cost her more than $40,000 over seven years. She said she was kept awake with the thought of what she might have done with the money she pays into the loan each month – perhaps a holiday, something for her house, or to fund a more stable life. “I’m struggling,” she said. Monash University Professor Mark Andrejevic, who has researched the types of Facebook ads reaching Australians, said it was pretty clear that Meta was not policing its ads carefully. “It’s easy to find these ads,” he said. “There are a number of indicators, including keywords, the characteristics of the pages that are serving them, and the use of multiple administrators across several countries. When taken together, an automated system should be able to flag this type of advertising easily.” Andrejevic said regulatory change was needed or scams would be a persistent part of the online ad environment. “It doesn’t look like Facebook is making much off of each individual ad buy, but if you imagine how many hundreds of thousands of these are appearing globally, the revenues could be more than just a blip.” Expert tips on how to save, invest and make the most of your money, delivered to your inbox every Sunday. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, minister of state (MoS) for finance Pankaj Chaudhary said that GST dues (including interest and penalty) worth INR 122.29 Cr, have, however, been recovered from the crypto platforms. Of the total INR 824 Cr tax evasion, crypto giant Binance’s subsidiary, Nest Services, alone accounts for 87%, or INR 722.43 Cr , while WazirX parent Zanmai Labs owes the government INR 40.51 Cr. CoinDCX and its FIU-registered Indian entity, Neblio Technologies, have been booked for evading tax worth INR 26.63 Cr. On similar lines, CoinSwitch Kuber is under the scanner for GST evasion to the tune of INR 14.13 Cr and ZebPay is under the radar for evading GST worth INR 7 Cr. Other crypto exchanges that have been booked by authorities include BuyUcoin, UnoCoin, Flipvolt Technologies, among others. In his reply, the MoS also said that four “investors”, dealing in virtual assets, have so far been probed for evading GST worth INR 1.76 Cr. However, INR 2.4 Cr has been recovered from these “investors”. Chaudhary also informed the Parliament that a total of 47 virtual digital asset (VDA) service providers have registered as reporting entities with the finance ministry’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-IND) till date. FIU oversees trade in VDAs and ensures crypto exchanges comply with the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the VDA taxation framework. All crypto platforms have to mandatorily register as reporting entities to offer crypto trading services in India. The GST liabilities are expected to further increase regulatory burden and costs for the crypto platforms as they look to cash in on the ongoing crypto boom . I am a third-generation Charlestonian. I was born here, my parents left when I was very young, and I grew up in New Jersey but returned every summer with my family to visit my mother’s side of the family. I still have a New Jersey accent. It's something that will probably never leave me, just as my mother’s Southern accent never left her even though we lived in New Jersey for decades. I have yet to use the expression “y’all” and doubt I ever will. There is another expression that was not commonplace in the Northeast: "transplant." I did not hear that term in reference to people until I moved back to Charleston to be with my parents. We also never asked someone “Were you born here?" or “Where are you from?” That's not because we had no interest in people's rich cultural heritage or ancestry but because we just accepted that New Jersey was now our home. More than this, we were fellow Americans living in our country. Even if someone was visiting or working toward obtaining citizenship, they were given the same respect and acceptance. Fast forward to moving back to Charleston. We all see and hear jokes about folks from other states, especially Ohio, which seems to take the brunt of such jokes. Folks still call Northerners “Yankees” — and not lovingly. They often are blamed for everything that has gone wrong including unbridled development. I am Greek American. All my grandparents were Greek. Three grandparents came to the United States via Ellis Island in the late 1920s from the Greek island of Ithaka. One set of grandparents settled in New York, and my grandfather George Manos settled in Charleston. Whatever happened to “This land is your land, this land is my land. From California to the New York island"? Those words from the Woody Guthrie song, “This Land is Your Land,” were what we learned and sang together at our elementary schools, along with “America the Beautiful.” My father, a gifted singer who sang at Carnegie Hall in a boys’ choir, would sing all the old folk songs — songs that evoked a sense of pride, love and honor for our country. He was also a military veteran, as were his brothers and my great uncles. Almost 75 years after his service, I overheard a member at a local veterans organization say unconscionable, unhospitable and disparaging remarks to his friends in reference to my ethnic heritage and my presence. It was deeply disturbing and hurtful given that my father, Peter, memory eternal, was a past post commander of a VFW. My mother graduated from Ashley Hall, which she absolutely adored. Her parents and her schooling instilled in her brotherly love, respect and acceptance for all people. Religious, political and social tolerance should be seeds planted in the heart of every child. We all have a story and a history. We all matter. Instead of being suspicious, judgmental or territorial toward others, and critical about each other’s differences, let us celebrate each other — and a beautiful opportunity to expand our understanding not only of our city, state and nation but also of our world. Should the U.S. increase immigration levels for highly skilled workers?Israeli food technology can help boost Thailand's agriculture sector and the two countries can together help strengthen global food security, said the Israeli Ambassador Orna Sagiv. During the "Savor the Future of Food: Satisfy Your Hunger with Israel's Innovation" event in Bangkok last week, Ms Sagiv emphasised Thailand's reputation as the "kitchen of the world", saying the country has been playing a major role in producing and supplying food for the global population. She said Thailand has a strong agricultural sector, which will be crucial in resolving the world's food crisis. Israel's innovative agricultural solutions and food technology would support Thailand in strengthening its own agriculture and food sectors, she said. She sees a bilateral collaboration between Thailand and Israel on food technology as a win-win situation. Ms Sagiv said Israel regards Thailand as a gateway into Southeast Asia and the greater Asian region. This year has seen growing mutual interest between big Thai companies and Israeli startups, especially in food tech ventures, seeking solutions for tomorrow, she said. While Israeli startups are equipped with advanced innovation they have little power to access larger markets, and would welcome assistance in improving their market management capacity. On the other hand, the Thai conglomerate food companies have the experience, access and ability to localise Israeli products in a Southeast Asian context.
