Hyderabad: Rachakonda police commissionerate has witnessed a 58% rise in cyber crimes from the previous year. In 2023, 2,563 cyber crime cases were reported, while 4,458 cases were reported in 2024. Also, police froze 23.12 crore in the bank accounts of accused and refunded 22 crore to the victims. Rachakonda police, however, did not reveal the total amount lost by citizens in cyber crime cases. Meanwhile, the overall crime rate saw a slight rise, 4%. Though overall crimes against women saw a dip of 9%, kidnappings (including minors missing) went up by 9%, rape (including false promise of marriage) up by 17%, and dowry deaths went up by 13%. Pocso cases rose by 23.6%. Overall murder cases also saw a rise of 11%, and overall bodily crimes went up by 9%. This was revealed by Rachakonda police commissioner G Sudheer Babu during the annual press meet held on Monday. "A special emphasis on VQT – visible policing, quick response, and integration of technology — to combat rising crimes, particularly those affecting women and weaker sections of society, gave results," Sudheer Babu said. While 33,084 crimes were reported in the commissionerate limits, the largest in the country in terms of area, Rachakonda police have detected 76% of crimes and also achieved a 64% conviction rate, which, according to them, was the highest in the state. Effective surveillance over certain individuals and crime hotspots resulted in a 10% reduction in property crimes, police said. There is also a reduction in accident cases by 12.30% and fatalities by 12.21% in Rachakonda during 2024. Further, 11,440 cases that were compoundable under the BNS & IPC and 70,179 petty cases were settled in the Lok Adalat programmes, Sudheer Babu added.
