The Salamanca football team saw an emotional 2023 season come to a heartbreaking end in the New York state semifinal. The Warriors were shut out 42-0 by eventual state champion Waverly and with that came the loss of a number of key pieces to the team due to graduation. In turn, entering the 2024 season, the big question being posed for the Warriors was whether they would be able to recreate the success. Spoiler alert: they did, and then some. While the semifinalist Warriors of ‘23 found themselves with two losses before the regular season reached its end, this year, the only loss they ended up suffering came in the last possible game of the season, in the New York State Class C final at the hands of Section 2 champion Schuylerville. But in order to get there, Salamanca needed to climb the mountain it was ever so close to summiting last season all over again. That journey began with and would not have been possible without players like Maddox Isaac, Cory Holleran, Zach Trietley, Warrick Kyler and Xavier Peters, among others. Each had their fair share of moments in the sun, but did it all with the greater good of the team in mind. Isaac, through his legs or his arm, punished defenses with his tenacity and determination. Holleran and Peters were the harbingers of lightning strikes that shocked opposing defenses. Trietley and Kyler stood tall as imposing figures on the defensive side of the ball and shut down just about anything that came their way. These leaders powered the Warriors through the regular season, Section 6 tournament, NYSPHSAA Far West Regional and semifinal rounds without a single negative tally on their record. And even when Salamanca’s memorable season did eventually reach its conclusion, there was something to be said about the camaraderie the team had developed. Before they could retreat into their locker room following their championship loss, something stopped the Warriors. They remained in front of their tunnel and waited for each and every last one of their teammates to join them before filing away. It was one final display of unity and a true testament, according to coach Chad Bartoszek, of the brotherhood that exists within the Warriors’ program. “We have a saying: ‘look inside the huddle,’” Bartoszek said. “It's got a lot of meaning. Right now is one of those moments, because it's not going to be fun walking outside of our group. I wanted one more chance to just be with them, and everyone will look each other in the eye, look inside the huddle, because we're the only group that knows what just happened and what we've put into that. It's hard to go out in the outside world after a loss like that (and) start hearing the noise. That's tough.” And while player leadership was certainly one of the brightest aspects of Salamanca’s team this year, so too was the coaching. After the Schuylerville result, Bartoszek spoke with the media and even made some cheerful remarks about what had just gone down on the field despite the negative outcome. Through doing so, he expressed how much this team and this year’s group of players mean to him and that while they may not have walked away with a gold plaque, they did leave the field with crucial life experiences. “I love coaching this group,” Bartoszek said. “I love what we do (and that’s) hard to hear for them when they see everything that they've worked for has kind of been taken away from them. So many life lessons in football, this is the game of all games to teach you what you need to know and how to live your life. That was our message for that. I'm super proud of Salamanca, I'm super proud of our community. We don't work any harder when we win than when we lose. (We) put as much effort into everything that just didn't happen to go our way.” And while the wounds might still be fresh, Bartoszek hopes his players will be able to, soon enough, walk with their heads held high because of all they achieved and not allow themselves to be bogged down by negatives. “It's a disappointment, really, for the kids right now,” Bartoszek said. “I know how hard they worked, and their dreams and everything have all kind of come crumbling down. But the sun will come up. You don't get an opportunity like this very often. And on one hand, this one's going to stay with us forever, but on the other hand, we were here.” Now, on the back of two historic postseason runs, when asked the question of what comes next, Bartoszek replied with a lighthearted groan and a laugh. “We gotta raise the bar again?”CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Sen. Smith’s district includes a portion of Mineral County, and he is an Oakland, Maryland, native. “I just give God all the glory ... and evidently God wanted me in this house and in this position, or I wouldn’t be here tonight.” Smith, 64, was first elected to the Senate in 2016 after serving two terms in the House of Delegates. Before politics, he spent more than two decades working as section foreman at a mine. “I think that has gave me the confidence in my leadership skills,” he said. The Senate president vote occurred in a closed-door meeting on the Senate floor, so it’s unknown which Republicans voted for Smith or how many votes he received. Ahead of the vote, the race had narrowed to Smith and two other candidates: Sen. Eric Tarr, R-Putnam and Sen. Tom Takubo, R-Kanawha. Smith said he “beat all odds” to win the race for the top position. In West Virginia, the Senate President also serves as the lieutenant governor. “I didn’t have any super PACs, no money ... I had heavy hitting lobbyist groups that were, you know, working against me. You know that they don’t want to see me there, because they know I can’t be bought,” he said. Smith hasn’t yet named committee leaders but noted that he didn’t promise his fellow GOP senators anything in order to secure the Senate president appointment. He said that, while it had been a difficult few weeks of politics leading up to the vote, he still considered Tarr and Takubo friends. “Even tonight, they were the first to congratulate me,” he said. Smith will succeed Senate President Craig Blair, R-Berkeley, who lost reelection in the May primary to Tom Willis. Blair has served as Senate president since 2021. Smith described himself as conservative and said that West Virginia’s overwhelming support of Republicans in the November election spoke for the kinds of policies they’d like to see passed in the Senate. He has his own ideas of things he’d like to see prioritized, like supporting small businesses, continuing Gov. Jim Justice’s focus on fixing roads and improving the state’s broadband infrastructure. But, Smith said Caucus priorities will guide his Senate. “All of us represent a district, and everyone will be free to vote what’s for their district or what their moral values are, and there’ll never be any repercussions from me,” he said. “It’ll be determined by the body, you know, if we have 18 votes, it’ll run, and it’ll pass. Some things I’ll vote against, because I don’t believe in it.” In 2022, Smith made national headlines after he announced legislation that would have offered vasectomies or tubal ligations to anyone convicted of a drug-related crime in exchange for shorter prison time. Republicans in the House of Delegates also had their closed-door Caucus vote on Sunday, opting to keep Roger Hanshaw in his role as House Speaker. He was unopposed. Hanshaw, R-Clay, began serving in the role in 2018 and has been in the Legislature since 2014. He is an attorney. The House and Senate GOP caucuses will present their nominees for a vote by the full chambers on Jan. 8. Students at River City High School were dismissed early at 11:45 a.m. due to the power outage, the Washington Unified School District said. All boys' basketball games were also canceled for this evening. The West Sacramento Recreation Center was closed until further notice due to the power outage, the City of West Sacramento said. The unpopular leader narrowly survived an impeachment motion in parliament Saturday even as huge crowds braved freezing temperatures to call for his ouster. Despite remaining in office, a clutch of investigations has been closing in on Yoon and his close allies, including a probe for alleged insurrection. The ministry of justice confirmed on Monday that Yoon had become the first sitting South Korean president to be banned from leaving the country. A lawmaker was asked at a Monday parliamentary hearing whether Yoon had been banned from international travel. “Yes, that’s right,” replied Bae Sang-up, an immigration services commissioner at the ministry. Also under travel bans for their roles in last week’s events are former defense minister Kim Yong-hyun – currently in detention – and ex-interior minister Lee Sang-min. In such a case, power would then be handed to the prime minister on an interim basis until elections could be held. Councilmember Michael Cathcart, who sits among the minority with Councilmember Jonathan Bingle, said he anticipated voting against the rules when he walked into city hall; however, after a long, diplomatic conversation with his peers, all seven voted unanimously in support. While initially drafted by the progressive majority, which routinely rules against the minority, the council proposed 14 amendments, 12 of which came from the conservatives. Ultimately, the governing body set aside policy and ideological differences for the sake of their constituency. “I just want to say it’s an honor to be on this side of the 5-2,” Bingle said after some of the majority joined him and Cathcart to approve one of the eight amendments passed. Tensions grew leading up to Monday as the community caught word of the initial proposal that would limit public testimony to two minutes, require three sponsors to move legislation out of committee for a vote and move council meetings to Tuesday instead of Monday. Cathcart and Bingle argued last week that the changes, among others regarding decorum, council commentary and more, would silence their dissent. Both represent District 1, which encompasses downtown and some of the most impoverished areas in Spokane. District 1 often faces the brunt of the homelessness crisis and related crime. The conservatives have attempted to push legislation emphasizing enforcement and other reforms, but the measures usually fail, with Bingle and Cathcart dissenting from the progressive majority. “You can make arguments that these procedural changes are different than what you experienced at STA,” resident Erik Lowe wrote in testimony, “but to outside observers, it is the same: trickery to prevent dissenting voices on the council from being heard.” Lowe said he initially got involved with the Spokane Transit Authority because of attempts from conservatives to silence the progressives from the council who sit on the STA board; now the tables have flipped, and he said the majority has a duty to protect the right to fair representation. Requiring three sponsors would prevent District 1 from pushing legislation that affects their constituents without the support of another. Bingle has also never been able to attend Tuesday meetings due to a scheduling conflict, limiting the ability to represent his constituency. “I cannot tell you the amount of emails I got that were like, ‘Listen, we will never vote for you, but we think it’s important that your voice is heard,’” Bingle said. While the council ultimately passed the amendments to preserve public testimony, Monday meetings and the requirement for two sponsors instead of three, the public came prepared. Community members filled the council chambers on Monday, even late into the evening, before adjourning close to midnight. One group that goes by Save Our Spokane, or SOS, put together a rally and protest leading up to the vote, even gaining support from residents who often disagree with conservatives. The message from each was clear: protect the right to dissent. Resident H.T. Higgins, who donated to Mayor Lisa Brown’s 2023 campaign but then paid for billboards criticizing her, was among those in attendance. While an advocate for the homeless, who are often at odds with District 1, he noted the importance of a fair playing field. He said the initial changes seemed like actions to fortify what he called a “blue silo.” Higgins also referenced the Board of County Commissioners’ conservative majority standing as the opposing red silo, adding that neither should stand for silencing the voice of the minority. “After watching briefing sessions and legislative meetings for the last eight months, it’s very clear to me that the public input has no value,” Higgins told the council. “We all know the decisions to bring legislation forward come from the connected and usually political donors of both parties.
