FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Navy quarterback Blake Horvath read the play perfectly and turned it into the longest in school history, a 95-yard touchdown run in the Armed Forces Bowl. “By somebody that’s not really that fast,” Horvath said after the 21-20 win over Oklahoma on Friday. The Midshipmen (10-3) fell behind by two touchdowns less than 10 minutes into the game, but Horvath's record run late in the third quarter tied the game at 14-all. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California quarterback Miller Moss is entering the transfer portal after losing the Trojans’ starting job last month. Moss made his announcement on social media Monday. Moss started the Trojans ' bowl victory last season and their first nine games this season before coach Lincoln Riley replaced him with Jayden Maiava in early November. “Being a USC Trojan was a lifelong dream of mine,” Moss wrote. “Putting on the cardinal and gold and competing on behalf of my teammates and school is something I will forever take pride in. I poured everything I have into this — body, heart, mind and soul — and am humbled by and proud of what my teammates and I accomplished.” Moss, who was born in Los Angeles and went to high school in the San Fernando Valley, signed with USC before Riley arrived at the school. Moss also stayed with the Trojans after Caleb Williams transferred from Oklahoma to rejoin Riley, and he served as Williams’ backup for two seasons before getting his chance to play with six touchdown passes in last year’s Holiday Bowl. Leslie Porter, director of the Windsor-West Hants Caremongers, says the man in his early 50s was a regular at a warming centre her group operates, adding that her community located 55 kilometres northwest of Halifax doesn't have services, including addictions treatment, that could have helped him. Connie Pollock, a volunteer at Caremongers and a friend of the man, identified him as William (Billy) Walsh and says that prior to becoming homeless he was a welder and — as a younger man — an avid motocross racer. Pollock says Walsh was one week away from being placed in an affordable housing unit in Yarmouth, N.S., when he died. Had he lived in a "physically safer place," she said, "it would have made the world of difference to him." “He was so excited to be able to move into an apartment and to reinvent himself." In recent years, he had become receptive to receiving care, Pollock says, but services in Windsor are lacking. Porter said, “If we had a facility in our area for mental health and addictions counselling, we believe he may have been someone who could have been helped." "Treasury expects to hit the statutory debt ceiling between January 14 and January 23," Yellen wrote in a letter addressed to House and Senate leadership, at which point extraordinary measures would be used to prevent the government from breaching the nation's debt ceiling — which has been suspended until Jan. 1, 2025. The department has in the past deployed what are known as “extraordinary measures” or accounting maneuvers to keep the government operating. But once those measures run out the government risks defaulting on its debt unless lawmakers and the president agree to lift the limit on the U.S. government’s ability to borrow. "I respectfully urge Congress to act to protect the full faith and credit of the United States," she said. The news comes after President Joe Biden signed a bill into law last week that averted a government shutdown but did not include President-elect Donald Trump’s core debt demand to raise or suspend the nation’s debt limit. The bill was approved by Congress only after fierce internal debate among Republicans over how to handle Trump's demand. “Anything else is a betrayal of our country,” Trump said in a statement. After a protracted debate in the summer of 2023 over how to fund the government, policymakers crafted the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which included suspending the nation's $31.4 trillion borrowing authority until Jan. 1, 2025. Notably however, Yellen said, on Jan. 2 the debt is projected to temporarily decrease due to a scheduled redemption of nonmarketable securities held by a federal trust fund associated with Medicare payments. As a result, “Treasury does not expect that it will be necessary to start taking extraordinary measures on January 2 to prevent the United States from defaulting on its obligations," she said. The federal debt currently stands at roughly $36 trillion — which ballooned across both Republican and Democratic administrations. And the spike in inflation after the coronavirus pandemic pushed up government borrowing costs such that debt service next year will exceed spending on national security. Many new businesses were participating this year, including Limerick Candles & Vintage Reads, 1108 Iowa St., a store mainly selling used books and candles, which opened in September. "(One of our goals is) to get our name out," said owner Angie Ma. "A lot of people still don’t know our name." Ma said Dubuquers should shop at businesses owned by Dubuquers, like hers. Deals at Limerick Candles & Vintage Reads included five free wax melts after the purchase of two candles, as well as a free book after the purchase of three others. Also available at Ma's store and many others is a free craft beer, courtesy of Dubuque Main Street, one of many ways the organization and the city worked to encourage shoppers to participate in Small Business Saturday. Parking downtown at metered spaces and city-owned ramps and lots is free this holiday weekend, although Saturday's shoppers did not need to worry about finding a spot. The Holidazzle trolley loop, hosted by Dubuque Main Street from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, stops at six popular shopping areas in the heart of Dubuque. Waiting for the trolley at Cable Car Square on Saturday afternoon, after stopping at a couple shops in the area, were Jill Keck, of Dubuque, and her mother, Linda Way, who was visiting from Rockford, Ill. Way said she was happy to be enjoying a day in downtown Dubuque. "I love to come down here all the time," she said. "I really like Dubuque." As the owner of local yard sign company Grassy Greetings, Keck said she understands the importance of supporting local businesses. "As a small business owner myself, I think it’s important ... to support other families and businesses," she said. "Everyone's always so friendly down here. It’s good to go in and look and see what’s new.” For the rest of the afternoon, Keck and Way were going to check out stores in other parts of town. "We're just going to get on the trolley and see where it takes us," Way said. A couple blocks away, McCoy Jeweler, 261 Main St., was offering 20% off all in stock jewelry. “We believe Small Business Saturday is obviously a very very important day not just for us but the entire community," said store manager Samantha Swift. "We really wanted to give an incentive that is hard to ignore.” Swift said shopping at a local jewelry store had many benefits over national chains. "There’s a chance the person you’re speaking to isn’t handling your order (at large chains)," she said. "When you come into our store and work with me, you’ll probably work me with continuously... We build a relationship with our clients." In the Millwork District, businesses like clothing store The Midwest Girl, 898 Jackson St. Suite 2, were offering their own incentives. Owner Marissa Hoffmann said shoppers at The Midwest Girl could get a free pair of socks with a $75 purchase and a gift with all purchases. “We have something for everyone who’s proud of their Midwest roots," Hoffmann said of her store's selection. "We are our own brand." Hoffmann said Small Business Saturday was not about getting the best deals but about supporting the community and its small business owners. She encouraged Dubuquers to go to local stores, see what they have to offer and talk to the owners even if they did not plan on buying anything. “That’s always the goal, really -- being community focused," she said. "It’s not so much about the sales and discounts today (but) really just encouraging people to throw on their coats and go downtown."
