PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jalen Hurts remained in the NFL's concussion protocol on Monday, limiting his ability to practice this week for the Philadelphia Eagles and casting doubt on his availability for Sunday's game against Dallas. If Hurts can't play, the Eagles would turn to backup Kenny Pickett — who suffered a rib injury and couldn't protect a big lead in a 36-33 loss to Washington — with third-stringer Tanner McKee on deck. The Eagles (12-3) need to win one more game over the final two to clinch an NFC East title and one of the conference's top two seeds. Coach Nick Sirianni gave no additional health update on Hurts but did say the QB who led the Eagles to 10 straight wins before he was forced out with the head injury wouldn't need much time this week to get ready against the Cowboys, if he was cleared. “Jalen knows how to prepare,” Sirianni said. “He knows how to get himself ready. He's a true pro." The Eagles are 9 1/2-point favorites over the division rival Cowboys (7-8), per BetMGM Sportsbook. Sirianni said the Eagles would lean on the medical staff on a daily basis to know where Hurts — who threw two touchdown passes and ran for a pair of scores in the first meeting against Dallas in November — was in his recovery from the head injury. Hurts was ruled out early at Washington after his head slammed against the ground on one run and he was hit in the helmet by Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu at the end of another. “He's always done a good job of protecting himself both as a passer and a runner,” Sirianni said. “Any time you lose one of your best players, you wish they'd do something else or not take that hit." Hurts shook off a sluggish start over the first four games and has thrown 18 touchdowns against just five interceptions to turn the Eagles into Super Bowl contenders. “Every time there's a player out,” Sirianni said, “there's an adjustment to be made.” Saquon Barkley and the running game. Barkley was held to 41 yards after the first quarter but 150 yards is 150 yards and he still has a shot at NFL history. Barkley leads the NFL with 1,838 yards rushing and is 268 yards away from passing Eric Dickerson and his 2,105 yards for the Los Angeles Rams in 1984 for the season mark. Barkley is 162 yards shy of becoming the ninth player in NFL history with 2,000 yards rushing in a season. Backup QB. Pickett was 14 of 24 for 143 yards in relief, throwing a touchdown pass to A.J. Brown and an interception. Pickett played his first meaningful football in a year. The Eagles use McKee as the emergency QB, but the sixth-round pick in the 2023 draft could be in the mix if Hurts sat out against Dallas. Pickett is from New Jersey and said when he was acquired from Pittsburgh that he had “great memories” of going to games at Lincoln Financial Field with his dad and grandfather since he was 5. The chance to run out of the home team tunnel — which he could get Sunday if he's the starting QB — left him absolutely delighted. Pickett, a first-round pick out of Pitt in 2022, went 14-10 as a starter for the Steelers. “I was impressed by Pickett, honestly," Washington coach Dan Quinn said Monday. "I thought he threw the ball with good accuracy to the right spots. He’s a nice athlete (who can) move, so I can see why they would want him in that system. I thought he got outside and had good scramble ability. Wasn’t surprised they didn’t run the sneaks to go through that.” Zack Baun. The linebacker barely caused a ripple on the transactions wire in March but has been arguably the MVP of the defense. He forced a fumble in the third quarter that set up a score, one of five turnovers for the Eagles. He also had two tackles for losses. The No. 1 seed. The Eagles all but cost themselves a shot at the top spot in the NFC and a bye with the late-game collapse in Washington. The Eagles will clinch the division with a victory over the Cowboys or Giants and most likely will finish with the No. 2 seed. They are one game behind both the Detroit Lions (13-2) and the Minnesota Vikings (13-2) in the NFC standings. Eagles fans can still chant, “We're No. 1!” but it's a long shot. To clinch the No. 1 seed, the Eagles need to beat Dallas and the Giants. And the Lions need to lose their last two games against San Francisco (6-9) and Minnesota. And the Vikings needs to lose to Green Bay (10-4) and beat the Lions in Week 18. Should the status quo remain, the Eagles would host Washington in a playoff game. Economists say companies would have little choice but to pass along the added costs, dramatically raising prices for food, clothing, automobiles, booze and other goods. The Republican president-elect floated the tariff idea, including additional 10% taxes on goods from China, as a way to force the countries to halt the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs into the U.S. But his posts Monday on Truth Social threatening the tariffs on his first day in office could just be a negotiating ploy to get the countries to change behavior. High food prices were a major issue in voters picking Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris, but tariffs almost certainly would push those costs up even further. For instance, the Produce Distributors Association, a Washington trade group, said Tuesday that tariffs will raise prices for fresh fruit and vegetables and hurt U.S. farmers when other countries retaliate. “Tariffs distort the marketplace and will raise prices along the supply chain, resulting in the consumer paying more at the checkout line,” said Alan Siger, association president. Mexico and Canada are two of the biggest exporters of fresh fruit and vegetables to the U.S. In 2022, Mexico supplied 51% of fresh fruit and 69% of fresh vegetables imported by value into the U.S., while Canada supplied 2% of fresh fruit and 20% of fresh vegetables. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who talked with Trump after his call for tariffs, said they had a good conversation about how the countries can work together. “This is something that we can do, laying out the facts and moving forward in constructive ways. This is a relationship that we know takes a certain amount of working on and that’s what we’ll do,” Trudeau said. President Claudia Sheinbaum suggested Tuesday that Mexico could retaliate with tariffs of its own. Sheinbaum said she was willing to engage in talks on the issues, but said drugs were a U.S. problem. St. Paul-based Bremer Bank to be acquired in $1.4 billion merger with Old National BankBEREA, Ohio (AP) — Myles Garrett didn't know he had joined a prestigious list of defensive stars last week until one of his biggest fans pointed it out to him. “My dad was hyped about it,” he said. For good reason. With three sacks last week in Cleveland's 24-19 win in prime time over the Pittsburgh Steelers, Garrett became the seventh player to reach double-digit sacks in seven straight seasons since the stat became official in 1982. The others: Lawrence Taylor (1984-90), Reggie White (1985-93), Bruce Smith (1992-98), John Randle (1992-99), DeMarcus Ware (2006-12) and Jared Allen (2007-13). All of them is in the Hall of Fame except for Allen. “Hall of Famer,” Garrett said in praising the retired Minnesota Vikings edge rusher, who is again on the doorstep of induction as a semifinalist for the fifth straight year. Garrett is on track to get his own bronze bust one day in Canton, but until then, he's humbled to be in such elite company. “Guys I looked up to when I started my journey into this game,” said Garrett, who tries to bolster his resume on Monday night when the Browns (3-8) visit the Denver Broncos (7-5). “It’s absolutely amazing to be amongst those guys, not just looking up at them but looking side to side and standing amongst them. "So I want to continue to find myself on those lists and hopefully stand alone at the end of the day.” He's on his way. The NFL's reigning Defensive Player of the Year is having another monster season but probably not getting the recognition he deserves as the Browns, upended by continuous quarterback issues, have fallen way short of expectations. Garrett used the national TV platform against the Steelers to remind any detractors of his greatness. He sacked Russell Wilson three times, forced a fumble and outplayed Pittsburgh's T.J. Watt, the player to whom he is most often compared. The Garrett vs. Watt debate went to another level in February. On the day Garrett received his DPOY award, second-place finisher Watt seemed to take a shot at the Browns star by posting “Nothing I'm not used to” on social media. Those comments stuck with Garrett, who following the win over Pittsburgh — and Watt being held without a sack — didn't hold back in declaring himself the league's best pass rusher. “I wanted to make it known that I’m the guy, I’m the No. 1 edge defender,” Garrett said. It was an unusual boast from Garrett, who was asked why he felt he needed to express himself. “Because part of my journey of being the best player that I can be is I think I can be the best player that there is currently,” he said. ”So I have to live up to those expectations I have for myself. That’s just on the road to be the player that I want to be.” Garrett's unrelenting drive is what sets him apart. Although he'll enter Monday's game with 98 1/2 sacks and can become just the fifth player to reach 100 in his first eight seasons, joining White, Ware, Allen and Watt, it's not enough. “I still took too long,” said Garrett, who can become the first to do it before turning 29. “It’d have been tough to catch Mr. White, but hopefully this next however many number will come quicker than the first 100. So we’ll go out there and we’ll do what I do and try to take it up a notch.” Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz marvels at Garrett's output despite double- and triple-team blocking. “He just continues to do stuff,” Schwartz said. “His production is so high, even though he’s a marked man, even though every game plan starts with, ‘Don’t let 95 wreck the game,’ and he still finds a way to wreck games.” Schwartz doesn't need to see any lists to know Garrett belongs among the best to ever rush a quarterback. “Yes, he does,” Schwartz said. "I think he’s just starting to hit his prime. I think he still has a lot left in front of him. The sky is the limit as far as he goes. At the hearing, lawyers for the hip-hop mogul argued that a $50 million bail package they proposed would be sufficient to ensure Combs doesn’t flee and doesn’t try to intimidate prospective trial witnesses. Two other judges previously had agreed with prosecutors that the Bad Boy Records founder was a danger to the community if he is not behind bars. Subramanian concurred. “There is compelling evidence of Combs's propensity for violence,” Subramanian wrote. Lawyers for Combs did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment on the decision. Nicholas Biase, a spokesperson for prosecutors, declined comment. Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to charges that he coerced and abused women for years, aided by associates and employees. An indictment alleges that he silenced victims through blackmail and violence, including kidnapping, arson and physical beatings. A federal appeals court judge last month denied Combs’ immediate release while a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan considers his bail request. That appeal was put on hold while Subramanian, newly appointed to the case after an earlier judge stepped aside, considered the bail request for the first time. Subramanian said he took a fresh look at all the bail arguments and the evidence supporting them to make his decision. Prosecutors have insisted that no bail conditions would be sufficient to protect the public and prevent the “I'll Be Missing You” singer from fleeing. They say that even in a federal lockup in Brooklyn, Combs has orchestrated social media campaigns designed to influence prospective jurors and tried to publicly leak materials he thinks can help his case. Retailers are betting on shoppers spending a bit more this holiday season. Although inflation has prompted higher prices for food and many other items, the National Retail Federation forecasts that 2024 total holiday spending is expected to grow somewhat slowly — estimated between $979.5 billion and $989 billion — in November and December over last year, when $955.6 billion was spent during the same time frame. That equates to growth of between 2.5% and 3.5% over 2023. “The economy remains fundamentally healthy and continues to maintain its momentum heading into the final months of the year,” National Retail Federation President and CEO Matthew Shay said in a statement. “The winter holidays are an important tradition to American families, and their capacity to spend will continue to be supported by a strong job market and wage growth.” The U.S. Census Bureau advance estimates of U.S. retail and food service sales for October 2024 were $718.9 billion, a slight increase from the month prior and up 2.8% from October 2023. Retail trade sales from September 2024 were up 2.6% over September 2023. But consumers will not only shop at brick-and-mortar stores this season, since online shopping and other nonstore sales, a primary contributor to overall retail sales, are expected to increase between 8% and 9% — to between $295.1 billion and $297.9 billion, up from $273.3 billion last year. Sign up for insightful, in-depth stories — completely free. “We remain optimistic about the pace of economic activity and growth projected in the second half of the year,” Jack Kleinhenz, chief economist for the National Retail Federation, said. “Household finances are in good shape and an impetus for strong spending heading into the holiday season, though households will spend more cautiously.” Holiday deals — including those planned for Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving — have been offered by big-box retailers for weeks. The Walmart and Gap chains reported sales gains, but other retailers, such as Target, have missed their earnings mark. A report by Bankrate found 59% of adults said they will likely buy something on Cyber Monday, surpassing Black Friday and Small Business Saturday expectations at 53% and 50%, respectively. Black Friday is Nov. 29, Small Business Saturday is Nov. 30 and Cyber Monday is Dec. 2. Younger adults, including Generation Zers and millennials, are more likely to shop during all three Thanksgiving weekend shopping events than their older adult counterparts. Gen Z adults between ages 18 and 27 plan to shop mostly on Black Friday (71%) and Cyber Monday (68%). A majority of millennials, between ages 28 and 43, will also shop on those two holiday events as well, with 64% buying on Black Friday and 67% on Cyber Monday. Both groups, at 59% each, plan to shop on Small Business Saturday. Older adults, including Generation X and baby boomers, plan to spend less at local stores during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the Bankrate report said. About 54% of Gen Xers, between ages 44 and 59, said they plan to shop mostly on Cyber Monday, compared to 49% on Black Friday and 46% on Small Business Saturday. Baby boomers, ages 60 to 78, also plan to primarily shop on Cyber Monday (51%), compared to 38% on Black Friday and 40% on Small Business Saturday. Income and credit card debt are factors in shopping patterns. About 72% of consumers with annual household incomes of $100,000 or more plan to make purchases on Cyber Monday while a smaller share of those that earn less than $50,000 (53%) will buy on that day. “The gap isn’t as large for Small Business Saturday (58% compared with 45%) and Black Friday (58% versus 51%), but in all cases, higher-income households are significantly more likely to shop,” Bankrate said in its report. Ted Rossman, a Bankrate senior industry analyst, said larger retailers may see more customers than smaller businesses for two of the shopping events since they tend to have larger inventories and lower prices. “Black Friday and Cyber Monday tend to be dominated by larger retailers, while smaller local businesses look to shine during the 15th annual Small Business Saturday,” Rossman said. “Like other types of holiday shopping, Black Friday has been trending in more of an online direction in recent years. An earlier Bankrate survey found 42% of holiday shoppers plan to make most of their purchases online, compared with only 23% who anticipate doing most of their buying in-person.” Small businesses are known for offering better customer service and unique gift ideas but face a sluggish marketplace this year. “Small businesses are facing an uphill battle this holiday season,” Rossman said. “It’s tough for them to win on price and that’s a major consideration for inflation-weary shoppers. Large retailers came in hot with deep discounts beginning in early October. The best ways for small businesses to differentiate themselves are by combining unique gift ideas with friendly, personalized service.” Aaliah Loila, who has operated her business Aaliah’s Gifts & Flowers for 19 years, said her sales have been sluggish this month at her store in La Gran Plaza de Fort Worth, a Latino-themed mall at 4200 South Freeway. “We’re expecting it to pick up in January after the holidays when everything gets back to normal,” she told the Fort Worth Report. Anette Landeros, the outgoing president and CEO of the Fort Worth Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, said that small businesses are the backbone of the local economy. “Small businesses create jobs, spark innovation, and foster a sense of community that large retailers often cannot replicate,” said Landeros, who will become chief strategic officer at the Trinity Metro transit agency in December. “In Fort Worth, where our diverse small-business community reflects our city’s unique culture and talent, supporting these enterprises means investing in our neighbors, friends and families.” The American Independent Business Alliance said shopping at small businesses helps recirculate money to the local economy.
