A 4.45 billion-year-old zircon grain, extracted from a Martian meteorite, that was found in the Sahara in 2011, has revealed new details about the Red Planet's past. The study, conducted by researchers from Perth's Curtin University, indicates that Mars once had boiling hydrothermal systems like Earth's volcanoes. This also means that the planet may have been habitable at some point in its history and could have supported microbial life. 'Black Beauty' meteorite offers unique insights The research team analyzed meteorites from a space rock named NWA7034, or 'Black Beauty.' Unlike most Martian meteorites, which are mostly igneous or mantle rocks, these offer unique insights into Mars's geological history. Aaron Cavosie, a planetary scientist from Curtin University's Space Science and Technology Centre in Australia, said Black Beauty is unique as it is a regolith sample from Mars's surface and contains hundreds of rock and mineral fragments from different sources across the planet. Zircon grain analysis reveals hot water on Mars About 20 meteorites discovered on Earth are thought to have come from Mars during the impact that brought the original Black Beauty stone here. A minuscule zircon grain inside one of these meteorites, studied for the first time in 2022, provided clues about Mars's early crust formation and preserved evidence of past meteorite impacts. Cavosie said these meteorites offer valuable clues to reconstruct Mars's geological history. Element patterns hint at Mars's early history The research team studied the Martian zircon grain's trace elements to gain insight into its early history. Researchers used nano-scale geochemistry to uncover evidence of hot water on Mars 4.45 billion years ago. They also detected element patterns in zircon, like sodium, iron, yttrium, as well as aluminum. These patterns revealed that these elements were incorporated into the grain as it grew. "Hydrothermal systems were essential for life on Earth and our findings suggest Mars also had water," Cavosie said.

Orlando is returning home from a three-game Western swing in which it went 2-1, rebounding from a 104-93 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday with a 119-118 defeat of the Lakers on Thursday. The Magic weathered a combined 70 points from Lakers stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis, thanks to Franz Wagner's 37 points and 11 assists. Orlando also got 23 points from Jalen Suggs and 19 off the bench courtesy of Moritz Wagner. Franz Wagner notched 15 of his team-high in the fourth quarter, the final three of which came on a step-back jumper from beyond the arc with 3.3 seconds remaining. The game-winner put an emphatic cap on his fourth 30-plus-point performance in the last six outings. He is averaging a career-best 23.2 points per game through the initial stretch of this season and shooting 35 percent on a career-high 6.1 3-point attempts per game. The outside shooting consistency is a significant improvement from 2023-24 when Franz Wagner shot just 28.1 percent from beyond the arc. "A lot of this stuff is mental for us players," Franz Wagner said. "So for me to get over that hump a little bit over the summer and carry that over into the season means a lot." After the two games in Los Angeles and a 109-99 win in Phoenix on Monday, Orlando returns home where it is undefeated this season. The Magic held opponents to 94 points or fewer in all five games of a homestand from Nov. 8-15, buoying the NBA's lowest scoring yield of 103.2 points per game. Detroit comes in on a run scoring 120 points or more in four of its last six games, though three of those went to overtime. The most recent of the Pistons' trio of extra-frame contests came on Thursday in a 123-121 loss at the Charlotte Hornets. Cade Cunningham scored 27 points and dished 10 assists for his ninth double-double of the season and fifth in a row. Over the ongoing stretch, Cunningham also produced a 21-point, 10-rebound, 10-assist triple-double in a 124-104 win over Washington on Sunday. Cunningham is averaging 23.5 points and 7.2 rebounds per game heading into Saturday's matchup, and his 8.9 assists per game are fourth-most in the NBA. Against Charlotte, however, the Pistons could not withstand a barrage of 38 points from Brandon Miller and 35 from LaMelo Ball -- or a 20-point deficit in the third quarter. "We can't have those type of starts, especially on the road, giving teams confidence," Tobias Harris said of Detroit digging a deep hole early. "Games like this are important, though. There's so many teachable moments of how every possession matters and counts coming down into the fourth quarter and overtime." In terms of team growth, the Pistons have made huge strides from a season ago when they endured the longest single-season losing streak in NBA history at 28 games. With seven wins through the initial stretch of 2024-25, this season's Pistons are halfway to matching the team's win total of a season ago. Harris, an offseason acquisition, has contributed to the turnaround with 14.2 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. --Field Level Media Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles. , opens new tab

The Ducks lugged a four-game points streak in tow as they prepared to welcome the Seattle Kraken for the front half of a home-and-home set. It will begin Monday at Honda Center before migrating northward for its second leg on Wednesday in Seattle. Last season, the teams also faced off twice in three days, with both those games being played in Seattle. The Kraken won both by an aggregate score of 8-2 as part of a four-game season sweep, though neither team ended up qualifying for the postseason. This year, they’re both at exactly .500, thanks to recent surges –– the Ducks are 4-1-1 in their past six games and the Kraken are 5-2-0 in their last seven –– with designs on pushing upward in the Pacific Division standings. They’re also both coming off disappointing losses, with the Ducks blowing a two-goal lead to fall 3-2 in overtime to the Buffalo Sabres on Friday and the Kraken coming up with too little, too late in the way of both offense and energy against the Kings on Saturday. Buffalo was opportunistic, twice dredging up goals from rebounds and scoring another off a turnover. For the Ducks’ part, they missed opportunities to shoot the puck, in some cases from prime scoring areas, once more. “We’ve still got to shoot the puck more,” Coach Greg Cronin said. “In the first period, I think Leo (Carlsson) had a 2-on-1 and the (defenseman) shaded towards (Alex Killorn), and he still passed. I think (Pavel Mintyukov) had one in the slot and he didn’t shoot it. It’s a strange mentality.” While Cronin lamented his team’s unwillingness to shoot yet again, former Ducks defenseman Brandon Montour was flummoxed by his Seattle teammates’ lack of pop in a loss to the Kings that he prevented from being a shutout with a goal in the final two minutes of the match. While Montour liked his squad’s late push, he thought they needed more hunger and consistency alike against the Ducks. “These games, we’ve got to be up for. Anaheim’s up next, we’ve got to come with desperation and get those points,” Montour said. Montour had nearly put the Kraken on the board with a booming one-timer and a second-chance effort that pinged the post in a game where his motor, wheels, and open throttle were on full display. Since his departure via trade in 2019, Montour has established himself firmly in the NHL. After parts of three seasons, including two truncated ones, in Buffalo, Montour moved onto the Florida Panthers. There, he scored a career-high 73 points two seasons ago, when the Panthers’ Cinderella run carried them to the Stanley Cup Final. Last season, they won the Cup in a contract year for Montour, who inked a seven-year, $50 million contract with Seattle as a free agent. He leads Seattle in defensive scoring and Jared McCann is its pace car when it comes to points. Another top offensive talent, Jordan Eberle, underwent pelvic surgery on Friday and was expected to miss around three months of action. Goalie Joey Daccord ranks in the league’s top 10 for both save percentage and goals-against average.
