The people aboard a ferry in Vancouver were treated to a rare sight Sunday. A pod of orcas swam right by the small vessel in False Creek, metres away from Sunset Beach. In a video of the encounter posted to social media by False Creek Ferries, the passengers can be heard gasping in awe. “What the f***?” one exclaims. It’s uncommon for killer whales to swim right into the city, but Vancouver Aquarium staff told CTV News after a similar sighting in 2019 that the orcas were probably visiting False Creek to hunt for seals in shallow water. CTV News has reached out to False Creek Ferries for more information about the encounter. This is a developing story and will be updated.French President Emmanuel Macron accused Haiti's transitional council of being "total morons" for dismissing the country's prime minister, according to a video shot at the G20 summit in Brazil this week and shared on social media Thursday. In the footage, the French leader is speaking on the sidelines of the G20 in Rio with an individual accusing Macron and France of "being responsible for the situation in Haiti". Haiti's transitional council pushed out then-prime minister Garry Conille after just five months in office, a move Macron called "terrible" in the clip. "They're total morons," said Macron referring to the transitional body, adding, "they never should have dismissed him." Condemning the remarks, Haiti's Foreign Ministry said Thursday that French Ambassador Antoine Michon had been summoned following the "unacceptable comments." Haitian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship Jean-Victor Harvel Jean-Baptiste used the meeting to express "indignation" on behalf of the transitional council, which he said viewed the remarks as "an unfriendly and inappropriate gesture that must be rectified," according to a statement from the ministry. Haiti has suffered from decades of political instability. But in recent months, the Caribbean country has seen a surge in violence with gangs now controlling 80 percent of the capital, Port-au-Prince. The clip also shows the French president, who is on a multi-leg tour of Latin America with his most recent stop in Chile, blaming Haitians for "letting drug trafficking take over". "Quite frankly, it was the Haitians who killed Haiti," the French president said in the clip. Businessman Alix Didier Fils-Aime was sworn in as Haiti's new prime minister on November 12, promising to restore security in the crisis-wracked country. fff-lum/ekf/sjw/bfm/md
Amsterdam-based startup CarbonX has secured €4mn to industrialise a new anode material that could help Europe reduce its reliance on China for graphite, a substance which makes up half the weight of a typical lithium-ion battery. Netherlands-based VC Energy Transition Fund Rotterdam led the round. It’s an extension on CarbonX’s €10mn capital injection announced in February, capping off the funding round at a cosy €14mn. Graphite is the go-to material for lithium-ion battery anodes, which is the negative electrode responsible for storing and releasing electrons during the charging and discharging process . Its found in batteries that power everything from EVs to smartphones. The EU imports almost 100% of its graphite from China, which recently imposed restrictions on exports of the carbon-based material amid rising political tensions between Bejing and the West. Sign up now! “A resilient battery supply chain is crucial for global electrification,” said CarbonX’s co-founder Rutger van Raalten. “Yet, we don’t see sufficient alternatives for locally sourcing critical raw materials such as graphite.” CarbonX wants to offer European and American battery makers a way to source a graphite alternative that is not just locally-made, but greener and better performing. Spun out from Delft University of Technology in 2014, the company has developed an “emulsion feedstock” technology that takes carbon black — a fine, black powder made mostly of pure carbon — and processes it into a material with a complex 3D porous structure. Similar to graphite, this hexagonal formation creates spaces where lithium ions can insert themselves during charging. However, CarbonX says that its material has even more little crevices for the lithium ions to hide. That equals faster charging and longer-lasting batteries. “CarbonX’s unique 3D porous network structure improves electron and lithium-ion transfer, while it is still highly compressible to achieve high energy densities,” explained Daniela Sordi, CTO and co-founder of CarbonX. CarbonX’s feedstock technology purportedly consumes much less energy compared to synthetic or natural graphite production. This equals lower costs and less carbon emissions, it said. The company’s carbon anode material is currently undergoing “late-stage qualifications” with “several top 10 global battery cell manufacturers.” It expects to secure its first offtake agreements halfway into 2025. Graphite demand is expected to rise by 20-25 times between 2020 to 2040, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). To cater to this “enormous market pull,” CarbonX plans to scale up quickly. CarbonX is currently planning its first high-capacity facility at an existing carbon black factory in the Port of Rotterdam. Its tech can “plug-in” to existing carbon black factories, using their current equipment, so there’s no need to build new plants. The company is also undergoing a feasibility study for a 20,000 ton per annum production line in both Europe and US, it said. “The founders of CarbonX found an answer to the developing Chinese export ban on graphite,” commented Jesse In ‘t Velt, investment manager of Energy Transition Fund Rotterdam.
Ex-OpenAI engineer who raised legal concerns about the technology he helped build has diedJERUSALEM — A new round of Israeli airstrikes in Yemen on Thursday targeted the Houthi rebel-held capital and multiple ports, while the World Health Organization’s director-general said the bombardment occurred nearby as he prepared to board a flight in Sanaa, with a crew member injured. “The air traffic control tower, the departure lounge — just a few meters from where we were — and the runway were damaged,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on the social media platform X. He added that he and U.N. colleagues were safe. “We will need to wait for the damage to the airport to be repaired before we can leave,” he said, without mentioning the source of the bombardment. U.N. spokesperson Stephanie Tremblay later said the injured person was with the U.N. Humanitarian Air Service. Israel’s army later told The Associated Press it wasn’t aware that the WHO chief or delegation was at the location in Yemen. The Israeli strikes followed several days of Houthi launches setting off sirens in Israel. The Israeli military in a statement said it attacked infrastructure used by the Iran-backed Houthis at the international airport in Sanaa and ports in Hodeida, Al-Salif and Ras Qantib, along with power stations, asserting they were used to smuggle in Iranian weapons and for the entry of senior Iranian officials. Israel’s military added it had “capabilities to strike very far from Israel’s territory — precisely, powerfully, and repetitively.” The strikes, carried out over 1,000 miles from Jerusalem, came a day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said “the Houthis, too, will learn what Hamas and Hezbollah and Assad’s regime and others learned” as his military has battled those more powerful proxies of Iran. The Houthi-controlled satellite channel al-Masirah reported multiple deaths and showed broken windows, collapsed ceilings and a bloodstained floor and vehicle. Iran’s foreign ministry condemned the strikes. The U.S. military also has targeted the Houthis in recent days. The U.N. has said the targeted ports are important entryways for humanitarian aid for Yemen, the poorest Arab nation that plunged into a civil war in 2014 . Over the weekend, 16 people were wounded when a Houthi missile hit a playground in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv , while other missiles and drones have been shot down. Last week, Israeli jets struck Sanaa and Hodeida, killing nine people, calling it a response to previous Houthi attacks. The Houthis also have been targeting shipping on the Red Sea corridor, calling it solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. The U.N. Security Council has an emergency meeting Monday in response to an Israeli request that it condemn the Houthi attacks and Iran for supplying them weapons. 5 journalists killed in Gaza Meanwhile, an Israeli strike killed five Palestinian journalists outside a hospital in Gaza overnight , the territory’s Health Ministry said. The Israeli military said all were militants posing as reporters. The strike hit a car outside Al-Awda Hospital in the built-up Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. The journalists were working for local news outlet Al-Quds Today, a television channel affiliated with the Islamic Jihad militant group. Islamic Jihad is a smaller and more extreme ally of Hamas and took part in the Oct. 7, 2023 attack in southern Israel that ignited the war. Israel’s military identified four of the men as combat propagandists and said that intelligence, including a list of Islamic Jihad operatives found by soldiers in Gaza, had confirmed that all five were affiliated with the group. Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other Palestinian militant groups operate political, media and charitable operations in addition to their armed wings. Associated Press footage showed the incinerated shell of a van, with press markings visible on the back doors. Sobbing young men attended the funeral. The bodies were wrapped in shrouds, with blue press vests draped over them. The Committee to Protect Journalists says more than 130 Palestinian reporters have been killed since the start of the war. Israel hasn’t allowed foreign reporters to enter Gaza except on military embeds. Israel has banned the pan-Arab Al Jazeera network and accused six of its Gaza reporters of being militants . The Qatar-based broadcaster denies the allegations and accuses Israel of trying to silence its war coverage, which has focused heavily on civilian casualties from Israeli military operations. Another Israeli soldier killed Separately, Israel’s military said a 35-year-old reserve soldier was killed during fighting in central Gaza. A total of 389 soldiers have been killed in Gaza since the start of the ground operation. The war began when Hamas-led militants stormed across the border, killing around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting around 250. About 100 hostages are still inside Gaza, at least a third believed to be dead. Israel’s air and ground offensive has killed more than 45,000 Palestinians, according to the Health Ministry. It says more than half the fatalities have been women and children, but doesn’t say how many of the dead were fighters. Israel says it has killed more than 17,000 militants, without providing evidence. The offensive has caused widespread destruction and hunger and driven around 90% of the population of 2.3 million from their homes. Hundreds of thousands are packed into squalid camps along the coast, with little protection from the cold, wet winter. Also Thursday, people mourned eight Palestinians killed by Israeli military operations in and around Tulkarem in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. The Israeli military said it opened fire after militants attacked soldiers, and it was aware of uninvolved civilians who were harmed in the raid. Shurafa reported from Deir al-Balah, Gaza Strip. Associated Press writers Edith M. Lederer at the United Nations and Nasser Karimi in Tehran, Iran, contributed to this report. The company has now secured a new $10 million debt facility, enabling the pay-off of another loan at higher interest rates to significantly improve its cash position as well as finance operations to generate of additional data to support the new drug application of lead drug candidate CNM-Au8 for ALS ( ). The new debt facility was signed with three entities affiliated with Clene and was closed on Dec. 20, 2024. Under the terms of the deal, the three lenders provided the aggregate principal amount of $10 million for the secured, partially convertible debt facility, with a fixed interest rate of 12% and a maturity eighteen months after closing. The first 12 twelve months are interest-only. Sixty-five percent of the debt facility is convertible into shares at a fixed conversion price of $5.67, a 130% premium to Clene's closing stock price on the day of signing. The funding will be used to pay off the remaining debt of an existing senior loan taken with Avenue Venture Opportunities Fund, L.P., a fund of the Avenue Capital Group, in May 2021. Over the course of the loan agreement, Clene borrowed $20 million. Repayment under the loan agreement began in July 2024 with $7 million of principal outstanding as of December 2024 plus a final payment fee of $0.85 million, for a total payoff of approximately $7.9 million, including a prepayment penalty. The new loan will help improve the company's cash position, enabling the cash runway to generate additional biomarker data to support the new drug application of CNM-Au8 for ALS via an accelerated regulatory pathway. The company met with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) to discuss a potential accelerated regulatory pathway in November and has since received additional guidance from the regulatory body to gather further clinical trial data. CNM-Au8, an oral suspension of gold nanocrystals, works by improving cellular energy production and utilization, which is critical for maintaining neuronal health. The drug candidate has already been shown to improve central nervous system cells' survival and function via a mechanism that targets mitochondrial function and the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (“NAD”) pathway while reducing oxidative stress. Phase 2 clinical trial data, as presented to the FDA, revealed significant improvement in survival rates, functional status and combined assessment of function and survival. The FDA recommended that Clene leverage additional NfL data from its three expanded access protocols (“EAPs”) and the HEALEY ALS Platform Trial to support earlier findings. Clene will have another meeting with the FDA in early 2025 to review and finalize its analysis plan for the EAP NfL biomarker analyses. Commenting on the new debt facility, Clene CEO and President Rob Etherington said the company was grateful for the trust of its long-standing investors who remain supportive of the company's efforts to provide potentially lifesaving therapies for ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases. “We believe that the proceeds from this new debt facility, including an extended interest-only period, will allow Clene the cash runway to generate the additional data the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has requested from our expanded access programs,” Etherington added.“The data are being gathered to support the existing clinical study data for inclusion in an application seeking approval of CNM-Au8 for ALS through the accelerated regulatory pathway.” For more information, visit the company's website at . TRACCOM INC. (Pink Open Market Symbol: TRCC) COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF VULCAIN, INC.The Federal Government on Wednesday revealed plans to boost Nigeria’s electric power supply by 150MW before 2024 ends. The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, disclosed this to State House correspondents after a business session at the State House during the state visit of the German President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, to President Bola Tinubu. “So we believe that before the end of the year, an additional 150MW of capacity is going to be added upon completion of the entire pilot phase,” Adelabu said while explaining the implementation of the Presidential Power Initiative agreement. On December 1, 2023, the Nigeria and Germany signed the Presidential Power Initiative agreement to inject 12,000 MegaWatts of electricity into the national grid. The signing was presided over by the leaders of both countries, President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, on the sidelines of the United Nations Climate Change Summit, COP28, in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. Managing Director of the Federal Government of Nigeria Power Company, Kenny Anuwe, and the Managing Director (Africa), Siemens AG, Nadja Haakansson, signed the agreement. Adelabu, who attended the business session, said, “The game now is about cooperation, collaboration and partnership. The flagship of this bilateral relationship has to do with what we call the Siemens project, which is our Presidential Power Initiative where Siemens is implementing the Brownfield and Greenfield transmission substations of the Presidential Power initiative. “Since signing the agreement in Dubai at COP 28 in December 2023, we have made significant progress. We have completed the pilot phase of this project, up to 80 per cent. “This involves the importation, installation and commissioning of 10 power transformers and 10 power mobile substations. They’ve been imported. They’ve been installed, and lots of them have been commissioned. We have just about two left to be commissioned before the end of the year.” He added, “The project had added at least 750 megawatts to our transmission grid capacity, which is why the relative stability we are seeing in the grid today is the direct positive impact of the pilot stage completion.” His comments came hours after the national grid collapsed for the 12th time in 2024. Grid failures are not strange in one of Africa’s largest economies, whose power sector still suffers gross underinvestment, says the Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Olu Verheijen. Despite an installed capacity of about 13,000MW, Nigeria’s power grid transmits only 4000MW due to ageing infrastructure, the Minister of Power, Adelabu, revealed at a briefing on October 28. However, that amount is grossly inadequate for over 200 million citizens, leaving many areas without reliable electricity as individuals and government entities struggle to pay mounting power bills. In addition to weak infrastructure, Nigeria’s power grid has also been a target of sabotage. In October, armed groups damaged the Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line, cutting electricity supply to 17 northern states. Following the incident, repair crews could not access the site due to security concerns. Repairs began only after President Bola Tinubu directed the National Security Adviser to work with the Army and Air Force to deploy adequate security personnel, including aerial cover, to protect the engineers fixing the damaged transmission line. However, Adelabu is sure that the administration’s steps will the stabilise power supply. “We are quite confident from the satisfaction that we got from the completion of the pilot stage. When we are done with the Phase One project in the transmission, the entire grid will not remain the same. “That’s why we tell Nigerians this is a very old grid. It’s quite fragile, and it’s dilapidating. “We need to revamp the entire grid to ensure stability going forward. That is the presidential power initiative,” he stated. Related News National grid collapses 12th time in 2024 TCN boosts Lagos power supply with new transformers Katsina, French firms partner on power supply Adelabu also announced that the FG is moving into the first phase of the project, which involves rehabilitating 14 existing substations and constructing 23 new ones nationwide. He explained that the commercial aspects of the first phase have been concluded, and the next step involves securing a no-objection approval from the Bureau of Public Procurement. Following this, the proposal will be presented to the Federal Executive Council. Once approved, the financing arrangements will be finalised, enabling the commencement of the project’s first phase. The minister highlighted the FG’s commitment to renewable energy as a key component of its energy transition plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2060. He emphasised the need for collaboration and partnership with technologically advanced countries like Germany, leveraging their expertise to harness Nigeria’s abundant natural resources, including solar energy, with over 30 states receiving a minimum of 10 hours of sunshine daily. “We also talked about renewable energy, which we believe is the way forward. We have an energy transition plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2060. “To achieve this, we must collaborate. We must partner. We must cooperate with a country like Germany, which has the technology, and we have the sun. Over 30 states in Nigeria have a minimum of 10 hours of sunshine every day. “They have the technology. We have the wind. We have the desert wind up north and the coastal winds down south. The new highway from Lagos to Calabar is opening up our coastal offshore wind across the nine coastal states of Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Delta Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River,” Adelabu explained. Furthermore, the minister pointed out the untapped potential of over 300 dams for hydroelectric power, which could be accessed through developments like the new Badagry-Sokoto road. He stressed that these opportunities create immense potential for expanded energy access in collaboration with Germany. Adelabu argued, “Then, talking about our hydroelectric power plants, we have over 300 dams we have not utilised for hydroelectric power because of poor access. “With the new road of Badagry to Sokoto, a lot of these dams will also be opened up. So we have so many opportunities and potentials on what we can do with Germany to achieve expanded energy access to our people going forward.” The power minister also reiterated that an off-grid system is the key to addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges, emphasising the need to implement a distributed power model. This approach would allow each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to develop their power-generating plants embedded within their states. Such a model, he explained, would shield states from disruptions on the national grid, providing backup power in case of national grid failures. “The off-grid system is the solution. Still, we must implement a distributed power model whereby each of our 36 states and FCT will have their own generating plants within the state. “This network will be embedded within the states, and they will be shielded from any problem on the national grid. When there is a problem on the national grid, they will all have a backup. “We have a preponderance of rural areas. We must electrify our rural areas and have isolated tertiary health and education institutions that we must use. So, that is the use of renewable energy for off-grid solutions,” he said. He highlighted Germany’s role in this effort, particularly through its development agency, GIZ, which has supported grid extensions and renewable energy initiatives. Additionally, he revealed that several German companies and private investors have shown interest in renewable energy projects in Nigeria, including solar, wind, and hydropower. While no new agreements were signed at the meeting, discussions focused on accelerating the implementation of existing agreements.
